We really enjoyed our meal at
Orange Squirrel. Food was delicious - there were a lot of things on the menu I could have ordered. Loved the vibe and all the staff were really friendly and relaxed. BUT, we arrived for 8 pm reservations and were done with our food at 9. This may be great for some, but for us it all happened too fast. I didn't even have time to digest my appetizer and my main course was there. May be an odd thing to complain about, but it took away from our ability to savor the food....and turn our evening into a culinary event. This will not impact our desire to go back, but wished we were able to savor the experience more...."

This my second visit and I don't
know why I waited so long to return. It was as good if not better than my first visit! except for the parking, there are only raves about this place!"

We've been wanting to go to the
Orange Squirrel for a couple of years and finally got our chance for a post-Valentine's Day celebration. It was a Monday so it wasn't crowded. Food did not dissappoint. It was spectacular and the portions were reasonable. Service was attentive. There is only on street parking which was a problem especially with large piles of snow i the neighborhood. We had to park a couple of blocks away and the sidewalks leading to the restaurant had large patches of ice. Overall, it was worth the effort!"

The Orange Squirrel is our go-to
place for every special occasion as well as just a night out. The food is amazing and the service always friendly and fun."

The food at Orange Squirrel is
really good. A lot of attention is paid to detail on the food, and the flavors are exciting. Unfortunately the service leaves a lot to be desired. It was also quite cold in the dining room, because the door to the outside kept opening. If as much attention was paid to the front of the house as to the kitchen, then this place would be incredible"

been planning to go for
years...really like the funky location and the comfy interiors. staff was friendly and attentive. the menu sounded amazing - wish the food backed it up. while the skate entree was tasty, nothing else we ordered seemed to have any seasoning. the prices were somewhat high, but would gladly revisit if the food was perked up. i kept tasting my food, hoping that the flavors would improve - but sadly, they never did. to the chef - this is such a great space - please give it some attention."

We had a terrific meal. The space
is tight and noisy, but the overall feeling is vibrant and energetic. The food was excellent and creative. The staff was attentive. The crowd was on the young side--maybe due to the small bar? Overall, would recommend and return."

It took me a while but I finally
made it to The Orange Squirrel. It was every bit worth the wait. Fabulous food in both taste and presentation. Lovely ambience and knowledgable service!"
Dined on 1/16/2014
A little disappointing but
understandable there was a fixed menu with three courses (two options per course) and a glass of sparkling wine for $65pp. We had the mushroom tempura which was very good although slightly salty and Filet Mignon which was cooked to perfection (both requested medium rare) and for dessert the crème brulee. We wished there could have been more course selections however the food was very good. The atmosphere is intimate and relaxing and the service was excellent. Chef Palmieri stopped by our table to thank us; he is very gracious. We will definitely be returning to The Orange Squirrel and look forward to trying other selections on their menu. It is so nice to find a gem right in our neighborhood."

Atmosphere is more like a local
bar. The staff is very friendly and helpful. The food is outstandin, creative and among the best i the state. Can be very noisy on weekends"

Found the food to be
outstanding! Very creative; out of the "norm" dishes, prepared with exquisite detail! My wife and I were very pleasantly surprised on our first of many to come visits!"

I had a nice experience. The food
was really good. We were not rushed."

My husband and I celebrated our
3rd wedding anniversary and we loved the place. The service was really good and the food was excellent. The Chicken Pot Pie and the Dry Aged Rib Eye were our main course choices and we both enjoyed a lot. We will definitively go back."

First of all why don't they serve
bread?? t's ridiculous not to be given the option. Also I was disappointed with my soup portion,it really couldn't have been more than 2 oz, it barely covered the bottom of my soup bowl. I had the branzino which tasted good however I can't believe they served it to me in the sizzling hot cast iron pan. I requested a plate as I couldn't understand how they expected me to eat it from the smoking hot frying pan?? It was awkward enough trying to debone it myself in the actual cast iron pan. There is nothing impressive in serving it to customers like that especially since no one wants to smell like fish. They should rethink that. Overall the food tasted good but I wouldn't go back."

There is a reason why it's been
voted one of the top 25 restaurants in nj. The food was excellent, the service was perfect. We plan on going back soon with friends."

The review title says it all. The
ribeye is quite addictive. It is hard to get a table, but you need to make sure you do!"
Dined on 11/2/2013
We hosted a group of 8 at this
lovely little restaurant based on a friend's recommendation. The menu selections were good, I had the pork shank which was cooked to perfection! Everyone else had a beef selection. Several were dissapointed that the chef sliced the ribeye (why???) That garnered a thumbsdown from a few althought the steak was still very tasty. The noise level is almost unbearable when you are first seated, but before long, you notice that your group has become a little noisy too. It was a a very enjoyable meal. Very pricey though for the location and cramped space. I will return, but NOT when I am hosting - this restaurant is way to expensive to make that mistake again!"

Had read so many great things &
the menu reads as really enticing. Unfortunately what arrived generally did not live up to and/or match the description. "Salads" weren't salads but "displays" -- yes the food was small & some was quite flavorful but again - not usually as described. I love skate wing & this was mealy & had practically no taste. The sides were "OK" at best. They were out of pinot grigio? The waiter could not---admittedly---pronounce half the menu & the servers seemed to keep forgetting about us - despite a not-so-full house on the weeknight we visited. For the money - will not return. Really disappointed too."

The food is outstanding and the
owner and staff atre unusually helpful and friendly. I would definitely go back. Can be noisy on the weekends."

I was really looking forward to
dining based on friends recommendations, etc. We decided to try some of their signature dishes. My husband had the rib eye steak with the Mac and Cheese and I had their Chicken Pot Pie. Not only did we think everything was just ok, nothing special (husband said my pot pie and mac and cheese was better!), but the prices were ridiculous. With tip, our whole bill came to $120 for two people. We each had a glass of wine and shared the Mushroom Tempura appetizer. For those prices, I expected much much more and don't think I'll be returning again in the future. There are much better options at better prices in the area. Plus - service started out a bit rocky."

Love going here, always awesome.
Chef Framcesco is the best!"

The food was awesome and the owner
came to speak to us personally. The beer selection was awesome and the food was great. TOTALLY GREAT!!!"

great food. only criticism would
be the noise level. way too loud. could barely have a conversation..."

Excellent meal and very attentive
service. Will certainly go again as I want to try more of the menu."
Dined on 9/7/2013
The food is inventive and
delicious, but VERY expensive, and VERY small portions. In addition, the service is amateurish at best. Don't think we'll be back."
Dined on 8/21/2013
I really appreciate that there's a
"foodie" type restaurant in this location. unfortunately i think orange squirrel falls a little short of it's lofty aspirations. i was part of a 4 person party and we had the duck, bison, chicken pot pie, and filter mignon. the duck was perfectly cooked and the sauce that went with it was solid. filet was good although not as thick as you'd expect and had a pastry puff wrapped around it. it was good though. the bison got good reviews. the chicken pot pie is literally full of hot air. it was deemed good but too vinegary. risotto side dish was good. i think they use a sauvignon blanc to cook it. you can taste the wine. squirrel nuts were too subtle."

I had been driving by this little
gem of a restaurant for 5 years without realizing what it was. i was looking for a place to eat in Montclair, and the orange squirrel kept coming up. when I put in top restaurantsi n Bloomfield - It was the number one...and for good reason. it's not cheap - but it's worth it. great appetizers - and the who;e bronzini filleted at my table was delicious!"

Here was a place we've been
looking forward to trying, and every dish came out with a twist. Our favorite was the tuna. Perfectly cooked to rare, it came with a side of popcorn, that looked odd but went perfectly with the sear on the fish. Our only complaint was the portion sizes were a bit small for the prices charged, but we'd go back again to try more of the menu."

Bloomfield Restaurant Week 2013 -
You served customers portion sizes that were the equivalent of 1/4 the size of a normal meal for an average person, did you not notice the anger on people's faces??? The couple next to us looked liked they wanted to punch the wall - at no point did someone working there say to the chef "people are complaining?" Small meal + high cost + no flavor = no repeat customers and bad reviews $30 pp plus 3 beers at NYC prices $9 plus 20% gratuity included totaled $110 - cost of after dinner dinner not included"
Dined on 8/11/2013
Our reservation was for 8:30pm; we
weren't seated until 9pm. Portions were tasting-sized, but it wasn't listed anywhere on the menu to expect smaller portions for restaurant week. It was overcrowded with no A/C & the wait staff was painfully slow & inattentive. We had to ask for everything multiple times, including our check! The food was bland & entirely forgettable. We left hungry, sweaty, & filled with regret at the experience. We decided to fill our stomachs somewhere else & went to State Street Grill. There, the cheerful, speedy wait staff anticipates our every need, & we had a much better meal at the fraction of the cost. Long story short: mediocre, overpriced food + lousy wait staff + overcrowded with no A/C = go somewhere else."

The service was great. The people
were friendly and attentive. The food was good; well cooked, tasty, and nicely portioned. I had the confit box as an appetizer which was aesthetically pleasing and tasty but slightly too small compare to the portion size of other appetizers. The skate was tasty but a bit small with a small portion for a side of greens. Without a starch, it was not very filling; but having the appetizer first helped curve the need for filler. The tart with a blueberry filling was a bit disappointing. It seemed like the filling was added while the tart was still warm so the filling was slightly runny which impacted the flavor a little. However, we were offered a shot of Irish cream which was absolutely delicious."
Dined on 8/10/2013
The restaurant week menu felt
limited. The portions size was so small we had to go and eat something else later. The food was tasty put not at all filling. The drinks however was fabulous."
Dined on 8/8/2013
very good good ... ambience not so
cozy ... for me a bit too table crowded.. i ate at the bar"

Restaurant week showing - Food:
POOR, Staff: POOR, Value: POOR. Tiny portions; unenthusiastic staff; only offering was the (very limited) prix fix menu; applied a $2 sur charge per martini (a shaking charge perhaps?) waitress couldn't adequately explain it. I went home hungry, unimpressed and annoyed.....don't bother with this restaurant."
Dined on 8/8/2013
Everyone was very nice, but their
food delivery was slow, and the attentiveness of the staff was inconsistent."
Dined on 8/3/2013
Limited menu Food well
prepared, but expensive. We each had 2 appetizers and a drink and it was $50pp"
Dined on 8/4/2013
The food was excellent (except an
obviously accidental misfire with dessert) however it took an HOUR for our entrees to arrive AND they did not arrive together??? It was also extremely loud, so it is definitely not a romantic spot. The servers were great, however, so if the kitchen figures out how to get their excellent food out in a timely manner and together they will absolutely be a five star establishment."
Dined on 8/3/2013
We went to lunch this past week at
The Orange Squirrel. It was great. The menu offers a lot of choices - one can have two fabulous appetizers . . . or a complete entree. And it was terrific to be served by the chef - Francesco. He was so charming and accommodating. I would definitely go back for lunch and dinner."
Dined on 8/1/2013
The most important thing to me is
the food and this food was not good. My husband had the pricey lobster cob salad. He actually made a face when he bit into it. It was basically mustard on a plate with a lobster claw and tail plopped on top. My chicken pot pie was burnt, so when I broke the crust and mixed it into the filling, the whole dish took on the burnt quality. We started with the mussels. The broth was good...complex. But the mussels themselves were oddly flavorless. And the tiny slice of bread served to soak up the broth was rock hard. Whole dish needed salt. The dessert was horrible. We ordered a blueberry tart. It was literally a pie shell filled with juice. Nice glass of sauvignon blanc. I would never go back there again."

Just had another incredible meal
at Orange Squirrel. Chef Francesco truly knows how to masterly prepare locally sourced (lots from his own garden) ingredients to turn up an inventive, tasty meal. His new pizzas are out of this world!! Any fish is a solid option and so is the rib eye, pot pie and pastas."
