Diner Reviews
  • "Everything we ordered on the menu was very well prepared and full of flavor! Loved the French Quarter-feel of the restaurant ... like i was right on Bourbon Street."

  • "I guess I was a little disappointed at the quality of food, as well as service. The person serving us didn't smile at all, and seemed rushed. The food seemed somewhat blase. I have always loved southern/cajun/louisiana style cooking, and this was a disappointment. We went for my wife's birthday and although it was so-so, it wasn't as great an experience as I would have liked."

  • "It got off to a very nice start for our first time there. Our friends were running late and the gentleman at the door was extremely nice. F he told me not to worry, we had a reservation and we would not lose our table. Dining upstairs was a treat, it kept us away from the noise at the bar. Our server was terrific, I unfortunately forgot his name, a younger guy with a beard. He was pleasant and did a great job explaining what was on the menu. He even suggested asking for a little bit less seasoning because I am not real big on to much spice. The food was very good. I had the steak and it was juicy and tender. We all had a great night. Thanks."

  • "This place has been here forever and yet this is the first time I went. I thought it was overall a good experience and I would gladly go back... The beer list is awesome and always changing. The food is good. I am not sure how authentic you want to call it, but they do have some dishes with crawfish and you can't find that everywhere! Our waiter was very pleasant and the desserts sound awesome, but we weren't able to try because we were so full! So that tells you that we liked our meal."

  • "Although we had a reservation, we had to wait for 30 minutes for a table. It seemed to be caused by operational issues. Once seated, service from Luisa was excellent and the food was tasty and plentiful. The general ambience was casual and vibrant, a la Louisiana style. I hadn't been to the Old Bay in 20 yrs so will give it another shot."

  • "Plans to see Amy Schumer at State Theater in New Brunswick and needed o find a restaurant close to theater. Old Bay was very good. Food was delicious and Bloody Mary was excellent!"

  • "Great food, amazing drinks, and great service. A little noisy but you can still talk and hear the conversation. We went for my wifes birthday, she lives their cajun martinis but they were no longer on the menu, but server went over to the bartender and he knew how to make them. She was so happy. They were really great. It was a fantastic experience. This is why we keep going back. Just a really great restaurant in a nice college town. Would highly recommend."

  • "We went to the State Theater in New Brunswick for a show, and then walked to the Old Bay for dinner. It's only a few blocks away, and is a pleasant stroll, and the same goes for the return to the parking garage, as it was a nice walk after a wonderful meal. We had made reservations and were seated promptly. The waitress was very pleasant and attentive, collecting our drink order and getting those going, while we selected appetizers and our entrees. The presentation and taste were excellent - we really enjoyed ourselves and couldn't believe we ate everything! We had a very pleasant experience, and will definitely go back!"

  • "First time, will probably give it another shot with hopefully better result. I like Cajun food and the chicken jambalaya was pretty good, not great. My date had the pecan crusted catfish, which was cooked fine, but served very soggy due to an over abundance of some flavorless sauce. The salad was excellent and I really liked the unusual zinfindel viniagrette dressing. My biggest complaint is the upstairs dining room where we ate was so packed with tables that it was uncomfortable. Servers had to thread their way between them in spaces so narrow they were carrying the food over other people's tables. Leaving the table to use the facilities required walking sideways to keep from bumping people's elbows at other tables, not good."

  • "Every need was met. They couldn't have been nicer. We had 2 birthdays, an anniversary and requested a quiet table since 2 guests are heading impaired. The service and food were perfect. Thank you. You made our special evening lovely and even had leftovers for the next day. The beers onr special were amazing too!"

  • "Our favorite after 22 years! We fell in love with the old bay in graduate school while at rutgers and had our wedding rehearsal dinner there22 years ago. Our family and friends were very impressed with the wonderful and unique food. We have returned over the years, but recently had not had the opportunity to go back. We went this weekend as a surprise for my husbands birthday. We were so excited to return and the old bay was excellent! We were so happy to see our old favorites on the menu. Our kids enjoyed the food and the old stories.cant wait to see the old bay again soon."

  • "Great food, great black pepper shrimp appetizer. HUGE portion of seafood jambalaya, tons of seafood. And took home more of the peppery delicious etouffe than I ate!"

  • "We enjoyed our experience but what was really great was our server, Victor. He suggested drinks based on what we were ordering and even let us sample two different beers which we decided to order because of his suggestion and we fully enjoyed them."

  • "My girlfriend and I ate here for the first time last week, and we're both very pleasantly surprised by the entire experience. From the food to the service, everything was fantastic. While it may not be the cheapest option, the price is more than fair for the portion size and quality of food. I will most definitely be returning, and bringing as many of my friends here as I can."

  • "We were given a table upstairs away from the bar. We ordered drinks, my husband was ecstatic over the extensive craft beer list! I ordered a house specialty drink, strawberry mint lemonade, which was great. Our group shared two appetizers, the chicken and sausage jambalaya and the sliders. Both were ample for the four of us and delicious. Our dinner, the pork chops and tuna (one, blackened, and one bronzed were cooked perfectly, served hot with New Orleans style side dishes, we all had the red beans and rice (yum)! The beignets were good, but not really as light as I would have liked. Overall, I would not hesitate to go back the Old Bay. It is definitely popular with the college crowd, but excellent for dinner upstairs."

  • "The craft beer draft list is extensive and the jambalaya is delicious, so how can you go wrong? Be aware that it's always loud in here though, so keep it in mind if you're looking for a quieter atmosphere."

  • "We went to Old Bay before seeing a show at the State Theater on Saturday. I do go every once in a while, so this is not new for me, but I believe it has probably been 5 years or so. We decided to split 4 tasting plates, and we really enjoyed them. We had the crab/shrimp cakes, the catfish tacos, the chicken/sausage jambalaya, and the spring rolls. These last were a little greasy, but tasty nonetheless. Our waitress was interesting but very friendly. Now the dessert - we decided to get the Fire and Ice - this was a scoop of vanilla ice cream with thai chili, dark chocolate ice cream with chipotle, and blood orange sorbet with habanero peppers. Really incredible!! I'd go back just for the dessert!!"

  • "We went to Old Bay for our 10th wedding anniversary. Their rich list of drinks (especially beer varieties) and amazing New Orleans style appetizers and entrees were delicious as expected. Which was a pleasant surprise was the manager to notice my note about our anniversary in the "notes" box of OpenTable's reservation form and to send us complimentary champaigne. Right at the moment, we shared pictures of our champaigne flutes with our friends on social media, with credits to Old Bay's thoughtful staff. I already liked Old Bay before that night; now it is my only option for a romantic night with my wife."

  • "We came here as a family for dinner to celebrate our daughters 15th birthday. However, there wasn't a good selection of kid friendly food. Would not suggest this for kids. Average food and nice atmosphere for adults. Prices are reasonable and food is hit or miss. I had very good gumbo and Jambalaya. However, my wife had the hanger steak and it was riddled with fat and grit. Our kids barely ate their dinner. The deserts were not worth the cost. Restaurant for adults only having a date night eating New Orleans staples like Gumbo and drinks. Stay away from everything else."

  • "I went to the Old Bay for the first time for ladies night, the catfish ball appetizer was very good, I had the stuffed flounder the meat was very sweet, my friend had the pulled pork (huge portion wish they had it in chicken). The ATM machine was broken but the manager willingly refunded me the $2 charge, so overall the experience was great Courtney our waitress was a doll, Oh and how can I forget the Swampwater was very good (wish they would bring back the frog in it)."

  • "This was a charming little place with some authentic Cajun dishes. We were seated in the upper level, which was made to look like a Bourbon Street balcony, and we had outstanding service. My only negative is that the steaks we ordered were run of the mill and small. I was expecting a little more flavor pop, but didn't get it. The other dishes we had -- the jambalaya and the bananas Forster were yummy. Next time we go back, we'll dip into more of the Cajun items."

  • "I had shrimp with alligator sausage. It was excellent. Spicy but not too spicy. My wife had chicken and said it was delicious. We had tickets to a nearby theater, and they accommodated us nicely. We were in and out in just over an hour."

  • "My boyfriend has always wanted to go to New Orleans, so I thought this would be a nice way to get a taste of it in New Jersey. Ambience and service were great and the food was delicious! He had the Seafood Jambalaya and I had the Crayfish Etoufee. They have a nice beer and mixed drinks list too. The dessert we ordered was really unique and yummy.....Fire & Ice: 3 scoops of ice cream flavors that had a spicy kick to them! Would definitely recommend Old Bay to others."

  • "This restaurant/bar has great specials such as 1/2 price ladies drinks on Fridays. Sorry we did not get to spend time just at the bar later in the evening because I suspect the music would be great. All 4 of us were pleased with our apps, entrees, and drinks. They even had one of my favorite champagnes by the split. This was a pre theater dinner for us, but my husband and I will be returning just because. Our server was Todd who made it his business to get us on our way to the theater on time. Great Job!"
