A word from The Obstinate Daughter - Sullivans Island
We chose the symbol of The Obstinate Daughter to celebrate the spirit, sass and determination of Miss Carolina Sulivan. Sullivan's Island and its rich history is the perfect backdrop for our lowcountry “Food Fort.” A Southern restaurant that is influenced by French, Italian and Spanish cuisine, The Obstinate Daughter houses a wood fired oven, plancha and island kitchen range. Pizza, pasta, small plates and a raw bar are the focus of the menu. Moving seasonally, the menu also is rooted by the burgeoning farms and fisherman in Charleston who all supply us with the superior products that make our region so special. The Obstinate Daughter is proud to be a part of the progressive food movement of Charleston and the cultural renaissance we are experiencing. We are also excited to be working towards the Green Restaurant Certification that our sister restaurant, Wild Olive, procured in the Spring of 2013. Promoting sustainable practices is a cornerstone of our business ideology. Continued

Diner Reviews
  • "Everything was perfect. Nice ambience. Great wine. The gnocchi is a must. Prompt and attentive service."

  • "Our second time here. The first time was with a large group and it was noisy, crowded, and confusing. Much better with a smaller group of 4 people. Our server Danielle was very knowledgeable about the wine list and made excellent recommendations about how to order from the menu. We shared three small plates, a pasta, and a pizza. The plates came out progressively so everything was paced well. Just the right amount and delicious. Not easy getting a reservation but worth it! Loved the gelato downstairs too. We'll be back!"

  • "Wow! We loved every dish we had. The tuna conserva, charred octopus, and short rib gnocchi were so delicious that we ordered them again on our second visit. The decor of the restaurant is very well done. We will DEFINITELY return!!!"

  • "Our server was the best we'd had during a week's long visit to restaurants in downtown Charleston and Mt. Pleasant. With out-of-town guests, one of whom was a professional food stylist, I had taken them to a variety of places for both lunch and dinner, In addition to the excellent food and comfortable setting at OD, Bethany, our server, presented a thorough explanation of the menu and wine list, displayed attention to service at the table throughout the whole meal, and demonstrated a cheerful manner, We all agreed that this was our favorite place. The restaurant was just the right finale for the guests' last evening of their visit."

  • "We have sought out OD for dinners, but had friends in town and needed to do lunch. 25-59 year olds at a table for six. All diners were delighted! Each item was unique and delicious. Specialty cocktails were delicious and the taste of our first Blonde Mary (a Bloody Mary made with yellow heirloom tomatoes) took us all by surprise. The service there is Island friendly and we will visit as often as possible when in town."

  • "Had an early dinner so parking was not a problem. The ambiance was lively but hard to talk, it was so noisy! The service was fantastic and the special grouper was delicious though very pricey! I thought $29 for grouper was expensive....so next time I'll watch what I order! I love this restaurant's atmosphere and menu so I'll be back!"

  • "Great new addition to the Sullivan's Island scene. Less hectic than Poe's and Home Team BBQ - more sophisticated and innovative, while still maintaining a decidedly southern, beachy vibe. If you have kids it is a good idea to show up early, and pizza or geechie fries (amazing!) are the only menu items sure to please the very young."

  • "As always, Jacque delivers. His creative flair for modern Italian food with a modern twist never disappoints. My wife Kleo and I celebrated our 35th wedding anniversary there the other day. it was worth the drive from West Trashley, oops, I meant Ashley. Everything was fresh and vibrant. The menu is limited, but will keep you coming back because everything in it looked interesting. The pizzas rocked. Bar scene looked exciting. Everyone seemed very happy to have a cool place to go to on SI."

  • "I am a hotel and food critic for a living, but came here "off the clock" and absolutely loved it. Kudos to the owners for putting together such a fabulous combination of high design and simple but innovative eats."

  • "By far a great place to eat. One interesting drink is their fresh yellow tomato juice. It is made there fresh with a bit of zip!"

  • "We had an amazing time at your restaurant Saturday night. Thank you so much for going above and beyond. Tom Marino was our server and he did a phenomenal job. He was very knowledgable about the menu and had great suggestions for us! Great job! Food was awesome as well. Especially enjoyed you espresso and gelato dessert."

  • "We loved the newest restaurant on Sullivan's Island. The food was delicious, the staff was extremely accommodating and the decor was perfect. Our only complaint was how much they charged for our daughter's dinner. She is only 8 and ordered noodles with butter on it. They charged us $8 for this dish. That is more than some of their appetizers. We just thought that was a ridiculous amount. The rest of the menu was very reasonably priced. We will definitely be back, but our daughter will be eating before we stop in."

  • "Love the open island feeling of the restaurant, altho that makes it a little loud. Great items to share, and new combinations of fresh local items on the menu; loved the tuna salad with butter beans....yummm."

  • "Lots of positive to say about Obstinate Daughter. I was fond of its predecessor, Atlanticville, but this is a step up. The interior re-do is fine, but the food is even better. We sampled some of the specials on the blackboard but the overall menu was more than satisfactory. The emphasis on pasta is a nice change from most of the small plate menus in the area. Plus, a plate full of peel-and-eat shrimp as a starter (with two sauces) was terrific. A nice bottle of wine made the evening delightful. Service very friendly (Danielle) and everyone was hustling. This place is a winner."

  • "My favorite thing about the OD is the decor! So comfortable. I love the reclaimed wood on the walls and ceiling. The light fixtures are perfectly coastal chic. My second favorite thing is the FOOD! I have been twice and both times delighted with my meal. I will be returning because there are more items on the menu that I want to try."

  • "I've been to OD before for lunch and it was very good. On this Sun morning we decided on brunch and both of us ordered the eggs benedict. It should have been excellent because the flavor and textures were spot on. But it came out barely luke warm. The kitchen was not busy as we were one of only 3 tables there. I understand that the eggs can't be hot because then they won't be poached and will overcook but the meat and bread were almost room temperature. The potatoes were the only hot thing on our plate and were very good. Our waitress was difficult to find at times and I felt she should have at least comped my drink after explaining the coolness of our dish. She did not but regardless we will still go back and try again."

  • "Delicious food found blocks from the ocean. A true surprise for our Sullivan's Island stay. No need to travel to Charleston for fine dining. This place has it all."

  • "If you're looking for a great place to go for dinner on Sullivan's Island, you need to check this place out. Service is excellent! Food was a little salty so ask server to ask chef to go light on the salt."

  • "One of my favorite dining experiences in Charleston, and that's saying a lot. Obvious care was taken with the ambiance, service, menu and food and drink preparation. (Frank was great at the bar!) We shared fresh scallop crudo with jalapeño, flatbread with butterbean purée (hummus texture with a very fresh taste and some citrus), perfectly cooked local swordfish skewered with sweet peppers and heirloom tomatoes, delicious peach bread pudding. Nice wine by the glass. I can't wait to go back!"

  • "Very good, house made pastas. Everything was great. Vibrant scene so it's a little noisy but not overwhelming."

  • "We had a wonderful experience. We all enjoyed different pasta dishes and could not agree on the best. They were all delicious!"

  • "Sweet and savory dishes served with a generous side of candlelight and romantic ambiance. There was even a moment or two when I thought my spouse (of thirty years) and I might actually be on a date! It was THAT good. Looking forward to more dinners at The Obstinate Daughter!"

  • "Wonderful upscale and fresh dining are here. It is put new favorite on SI. Also, they were very nice and accommodating of kids, offering cheese pizza and plain pasta options, even though my son loved the braised short-rib gnocchi."

  • "Ate there on busy Saturday night. Place was quite crowded and noisy. Hostess not so friendly. Menu is interesting, like the idea of smaller plates. the cooks really did not get it . Fish overcooked to rubber. Squid and scallop dish had over done squid. If you go wait a month or two for them to get up to snuff. Considering Wild Olive crew involved I expected better."

  • "Our family had a wonderful meal here - the service was exceptional and everyone claimed they had the best meal. We felt like everyone at this restaurant was focused on making us feel welcome and taken care of. Mission accomplished!"

  • "After waiting to go to the Obstinate Daughter for a long time we were very under impressed with the food. I normally don't write these types of reviews but being in Charleston and spending a good amount of money on food I feel like others need to know. I don't get all the hype at all. The pasta dish that they called the chef's special is something I could've made at home. The pizza dish was nothing special either. I would give it another chance for brunch, but I think dinner wise I would much rather go to Coda Del Pesca on IOP."

  • "This is a very popular restaurant, located in the former Atlanticville location. There decor has been completely renovated and has a rustic, hip vibe. It specializes in small plates which average six to nine dollars and are easily split between everyone. The chef takes typical low country fare and adds a unique, delicious spin. I'm happy we were able to book a reservation through Open Table as I have been trying to get here with family for several weeks."

  • "what a great new find! Design and ambience are 10 stars! Love it, so chic yet casual vibe at the same time -- staff dressed down which is nice but very professional and knowledgeable. Menu diverse, varied and different. Food delish, drink menu fun. Oysters!!! YUM!!!"

  • "After reading the reviews, this was the first restaurant we picked on our week long vacation in Charleston/Isle of Palms and we were not disappointed. Everything was so delicious. We ended going back to try new things and are ready for a third try!"

  • "I think this is my new favorite restaurant in town! Been there twice now and can't wait to go back. Outstanding service and food. My only complaint is that they took the shaved asparagus salad off the menu :( Otherwise, I can't think of a negative thing to say! Charming, delicious and friendly."

  • "Simply put, The Obstinate Daughter is our favorite restaurant in the Charleston area. And, that's saying something. Delicious and well thought out food combinations, friendly and knowledgeable service. You just need to remember to get reservations well in advance if you want to dine at a mainstream hour. We have now been there three times and hope to stop by many, many more times."

  • "This is not a steak and potato place and you're not gonna find a fried seafood platter on this menu. Instead you’ll find fresh flavors of the land and sea, creatively orchestrated so they dance on your palate and make your taste buds sing. For drinks, try the Sargent Jasper’s Margarita made with Avion tequilla, keylime juice and SC peach puree or the Palmetto Log Colada (local Striped Pig rum, coconut milk Ambrose Farms strawberries). The Scallop Crudo with radish and jalapeno and Ravioli stuffed with ricotta and Swiss chard, Mepkin Abbey Mushrooms and speck are heaven. The Old Danger pizza is my favorite. It's topped w pancetta, mozzerella, white sauce, scallion, black pepper, parmesan and a fried egg. Can't wait to get back!"

  • "We were early for our reservation so ended up eating at the bar, which we enjoy that interaction anyway. Empanada was outstanding! Shrimp salad sandwich light and delicious, and the KFC pizza excellent. Plan ahead as this place is busy, but worth it! Bartender Frank rocks!"
