Diner Reviews
  • "We enjoyed the food, great location with an unbeatable view."

  • "We wanted someplace special we had never been before and thought would offer intimacy, a unique journey to get (gondola), excellent food (heard about in reiews) and weather permitting (a view-which we got). Food menu we choose was the set meal with wine pairings lived up to expectation and beyond. The evening was worth every penny we spend!"

  • "I've only been here twice, but both times I've been impressed with how they experiment and try new things with their menu. The attention to detail and complexity they put in ever bite is worth the extra time on the gondola."

  • "Dinner was so-so, service is ok, but view was stunning. It's a little too high-style dining for a venue where skiers are hanging out in gear. The food was not memorable but a bit pricey. Great place to visit once, or take visitors, but it won't be a regular venue for me."

  • "The atmosphere at the Observatory is simply magnificent. It is the ideal place to go to for special occasions and celebrations. The food is well thought out and delicious, however, the menu does have a few things missing quite often. The servers will usually say its because the chef isn't happy with the dish but its more likely that they have run out seeing as one can quite easily notice when earlier diners have received the 'disappointing' dish and seem to enjoy it immensely."

  • "Excellent: the food was beyond perfection , probably the best dinner we have had in many years. A perfect location to bring two visiting friends who have never been to Vancouver before. The views were spectacular and the evening could not have been better. Special added touches portraying our value as customers were interspersed during the meal, such as "tastings" of delicious gifts from the chief and the special touch for my friends birthday. Definitely "my place" to go with all future visiting friends and family and for any special occasion."

  • "We were celebrating a friend's birthday during a recent visit to the city. We loved our time at the Observatory...great wine list, amazing service and spectacular views!"

  • "Wonderful decor nice ambiance great views. Food was very disappointing. It was made to look pretty rather than appetizing. I had the lamb which I found undercooked rather than medium rare. There was too much meat and very little vegetables. My friends had the steak which was good but again very little vegetables."

  • "Was up for dinner late March. It was nice to teleport back into winter for an evening up on Grouse Mountain. It was cloudy so the city was in and out of view but there was still a wonderful view of the other mountain tops above the clouds. The food was very good and every dish we ordered presented a variety of flavours and textures. We wanted to savour every bite! A great dining experience."

  • "Gondala ride to start adds slight hype before dinner. No greeter at door at arrival (she came after a couple mins). Right on time for reservation, but we had to wait 5 mins for available spot. Excellent window view, luck of draw. Promptly greeted for drinks. Got two cocktails and asked for wine list. Server brought drinks without wine menu. Asked for it again. Ordered our food. Appy got there and server realized that they had not brought bread to table to start with. Everything after that went well. Food was very good. Flavor distinction was evident but not overpowering and well paired together. Appy and entree filled enough.. No need/room for dessert. Gondala ride down a little crammed with skiers a change up from a quiet romantic dinner"

  • "This is a good place for a special occasion. It gets you up the mountain but you obviously pay for it too in the price. Food quality is consistent but definitely no 5-star star. Ambience however, is unparalleled."
    Dined on 12/12/2013
  • "Please watch the wine list. The menu is misleading and wine comes very expensive if you don't check the price list column carefully."

  • "Love it so much. All friends from out of country , they love it too. The best view of Vancouver. Lot of show too."

  • "enjoyed the fantastic 5-course prix fixe menu at The Observatory on 12 March 2014, especially the pumpkin and goat's cheese parfait and the herb gnocchi with pork belly. the 5-course prix fixe also includes matched wines which complemented the food very well. the service was attentive and friendly. the views over downtown Vancouver added to the elegant setting inside the restaurant. the price for the 5-course prix fixe is expensive but represents good value ($125 per person includes the wines and gondola ride)."

  • "One of the few dining experiences that rate as our top 10 best ever. As a point of reference, we previously owned a restaurant with a Culinary Institute trained chef partner. New ingredient use to us were very interesting; cranberry powder, celery tie (sp.)..... Keep it up on moving great culinary experiences forward for all of us."

  • "The observatory is a remarkable experience simply because of its location. Its a bit of an adventure to get there and has the best view in the greater Vancouver area. The food was above average but not remarkable. The service, however, was a bit dissapointing. Everything felt rushed, and we had to poor our own wine. Overall it's worth trying once."

  • "We recently dined at your restaurant. When we walked in, there was no one to greet us and our waitress seemed unorganized when we walked into the restaurant. Our meals were displayed nicely on our plates but our food was only 'ok'. I had the scallop appetizer, and was disappointed the broth was cold that the waitress poured on at our table. Our main meals were only average and was hoping for above average. I will not go back"

  • "A wonderful view of the full moon and city to enjoy with an incredible meal. The ambient lighting was perfect, romantic and we didn't even mind the 2 young toddlers running around the dining area. Our entrees were colorful, delicate, decorated and delicious! We had a great time by the fire, on the ice rink and beautiful sleigh ride. it was a great way to spend our 5th Valentine's day and anniversary. We will be back."

  • "The taste was quite good. However the appetizer had only 2 scallops and they were quite small. About the size of a loonie. We would expect larger or more scallops in the appetizer. In addition, the menu said they came with bacon which turned out to be freeze dried fois gras which isn't even the same animal... The lights were too bright considering you are there to take in the night view and see the city lights. The presentation of everything was well done and the tastes were above average."

  • "Got lucky with the best window seat. Only about 4 other tables were occupied. I think if you dont get the window seat then it may not be worth it. This was my first real fine dining experience and it was pretty amazing. The portions were tiny but the taste was like nothing I had experienced before. I didnt feel too bad paying the $$$$ bill when at then. Needless to say, my girlfriend was very impressed with the early valentines dinner date. But this experience might have turned out a lot differently without the window seat."

  • "For the amazing view I was tempted to give them a FIVE. The view is definitely stunning! However, I must lower my rating due to the manner of our hostess Ariel (think that was her name).... Come here if you enjoy your hostess gossip about you in the kitchen in her loudest voice !!!!"

  • "Had be not been sealed with our credit card reservation, we would have walked out after being responded rudely by your (tall) Hostess for that evening. We were advised to arrive 15-20 minutes earlier and must dine within 1.5 hours being that our reservation was later that evening. We arrived early and got our reservation time mixed up with 830 & 845, the hostel rudely told us to step away. She did not apologize nor tell us in a courteous manner that we arrived too early. We may have been out of town guests, is this how you train your front desk staff? Big turn off. Even though the dinner staff were far more pleasant, the hostess's unwelcoming still left a bad taste in our mouth. We are undecided if we would recommend to friends."

  • "Good service from all staff members from the lift ride to the chalet and restaurant. The food was excellent. We had the dineout meals. The portions were fine. The bread was magnificent. The plating was like from the Iron Chef competition. Beautifully presented. Wine list was amazing, though a bit on the pricey side. The meals were definitely worth the money. The desserts were incredible. Loved the experience. My wife and I really enjoy the whole evening. Looking forward to returning."

  • "It was a tight squeeze going up the mountain with all the skiiers & all their gear & lots of kids! Coming down was the same, but not as crowded. The restaurant is lovely & this was my 2nd time going during dine out. The food was really good, but not "OMG! This is amazing!!!"-type standard. However, I would definitely recommend it to others. We were during their first sitting at 5:15pm & the sun was starting to set. At one point there was only cloud cover & then it was clear....the view is amazing!!! If you haven't been, it's definitely worth the venture up there & the skyride is fun too. The service was good, but again, not outstanding or anything above and beyond. I wouldn't complain about the service at all."

  • "The evening was lovely, the view spectacular. Happy to get a table by the window. Great bread to start, but the portion sizes for appetizers, entrees and desserts were far too small. This is not Ethiopia. We left feeling hungry, which shouldn't happen when you've had 3 courses. However, the food itself was tasty, and we went to the restaurant solely for the experience of the gondola ride to the top and the spectacular views of Vancouver. If you are going to eat here, make sure you have a snack at home first."

  • "its a very small quaint restaurant that serves good food in small portions we had a great time, but the ambience, really depends on the seat you may as well have been eating anywhere else if you don't have a window seat"

  • "I requested window seating for a suprise dinner for our wedding anniversary but they could not arrange same and requested for greeting wrote on the desserts.very disappointed with the experience."

  • "This Restaurant has high quality food and the food presentations are artistic. I found there was a little too much white space on my plates but I do appreciate the fact that finer dining means smaller portions. The problem here is that with a little work they can mix fine dining a little more with value. I found the highlights of the evening stemming more from the beautiful views and the fact that a tram ride was included than the food itself, which is what I think the establishment would rather I remember. The service was good but there was a definite wait between appetizer and entrée. Most tables seated around the same time of us were done all three courses before we even got our entrees."
