Diner Reviews
  • "My husband & I enjoyed all our courses. The Kale salad was wonderful. I had the trout dish , very tasty. My husband had one of the specials- Boar meatloaf. He thouroughly enjoyed it. We splurged on the banasplit for dessert. Quite a different take- peel was left on - but very food. The hotel was quite busy because it was Blowing Rock Wine & Food Festival weekend , making the noise level a little high."

  • "Four of us attended the 4:00 to 6:00 session of the Blue Ridge Wine Festival. We knew when we bought those tickets that we would need a place to go for dinner afterwards. The New Public House Web site was attractive and interesting as well as being able to request and receive confirmation of your reservations while on the site. Every one thoroughly enjoyed their meals and none of us ordered the same items from the menu. The presentation was wonderful from appetizer through dessert. . The ambience and friendly staff helped the dining experience immensely. We were also able to be seated earlier than our reservations which was great since we had a 90 minute drive home. Would definitely recommend to others!"

  • "We have a vacation house in the area and we just discovered The New Public House. We found it to be upscale quality at an affordable price. We had guests for the weekend and all of us enjoyed our meals. The pork chop got the most accolades, but all of us enjoyed our meals. One order of apple cake was shared around the table and was still being praised the next day. The waitress was friendly, helpful and courteous. This restaurant will definitely become on our rotation list."

  • "The public house has some really good food, picked a bad night to go , they had a frat crowd... Ugh!!! Service was ok , I would go back since the food was good!"

  • "From the moment we walked in we felt the graciousness of the staff. It was my husband's birthday and I wanted everything perfect and it was. The server was very helpful, kind and knowledgeable. The menu was to die for. I had a hard time making up my mind and we shared a couple of plates. I had called ahead to order a banana split for the "birthday dessert" and it was beautifully presented with a candle. We would go back again in a second. The prices are as low or as high as you want them, lots of variety. My husband raved about the steak, cooked to,perfection."

  • "As a sister restaurant to Bistro Roca and Gideon Ridge, we want to love the NPH. It has delicious food, great wait staff, and a new menu that offers both small plates and entrees. Recently we had the flank steak and the trout as entrees. Both were wonderful and priced well. However, there is something about the NPH that needs attention. Perhaps it is the wine list which is in need of some moderately priced good wines. Perhaps it's the ambience which seems cold. Perhaps it is the New York style cafe seating. We aren't quite sure what it is that keeps this small restaurant from moving into "our favorites list," but it hasn't reached the same level of satisfaction for us as its sister restaurants yet!"

  • "New Public House was welcoming, warm and casually relaxing with a sophisticated menu. Small plate selections were incredible and balanced well with deliciously creative entrees. Broad wine selection realistically priced. Six of us dined together with timely service. Good wait staff with attentive management. Highly recommend their specials. A definite repeat for us!"

  • "We decided to give the NPH a third try since we heard they had included new plated dinner menu items, along with their small plates. We were somewhat skeptical, but we want to support local businesses. We were delighted with our dinner and service. The food was excellent , and the service was great. Several of our favorite wait staff from Bistro Roca were present, and it was wonderful to see familiar faces making customers happy. The restaurant is now a keeper on our list of favorite Blowing Rock eateries. We are so glad the menu was tweaked to provide entrees as well as tapas choices."

  • "Just the right mix for a comfortable, delicious dining experience. From early morning breakfast to appetizers by the fire, it is delightful . Try it .....you'll see what I mean. Blowing Rock is lucky to have this attraction."

  • "We expected a fine dining experience, but were very disappointed. Although our waitpersons were very nice, they were not well trained. Wine was served to my wife and me without allowing a confirmatory tasting. The waitperson asked how I wanted my pork chop cooked. I said medium, and she proceeded to say, "well they usually cook it less than that." So why did she even ask? New silverware after the first courses was repositioned in the wrong place. The chopped salad contained large chunks of yellow, bitter lettuce that was not very appetizing. The pork chop was charred and badly over cooked. The beef fillet was devoid of flavor. Very diasappointing first experience at this restaurant. Hopefully it will improve with time."

  • "We ended up going to the New Public House somewhat on a whim, but it turned out to be excellent. The ambience is a bit rustic, but very charming. The service, both at the front of the house and by the wait staff, was excellent. There's a very respectable wine list, and servers are happy to allow as many tastings as you'd like. The food was excellent. I had a fairly standard filet with vegetables and potatoes, but it was perfectly cooked and was served in mini skillets which kept everything perfectly warm during an extended dinner. My girlfriend had a special for the night, which was a braised pork shank. It was fall-off-the-bone tender and very well presented, though it was a bit cold at first. That was corrected quickly though. A+"

  • "I will likely try this restaurant again but was disappointed in the menu for the most part. The staff were very friendly and the restaurant is very convenient to walking to and from. I would strongly suggest a few more menu items."

  • "Had dinner at this relatively new restaurant in town to celebrate my husband's birthday. They were hosting a wine club and offered us the same 4 course meal at a great price. The food was wonderful as well as the service. The regular menu included small dishes as well as entrees and we can't wait to go back to try these. They describe the menu as Southern cuisine with a healthy twist. The atmosphere was very relaxing and friendly. We loved it!!!!"

  • "A recent addition to the Blowing Rock foodie scene. A very innovative menu and wine list. Our latest visit was wonderful on a cold Friday night. Great wait staff on Friday night and again Saturday morning. The restaurant is now open for breakfast and we came back the next morning for yet another outstanding experience of flavors with house made pork sausage and biscuits."

  • "We loved The New! What a great little gem in downtown Blowing Rock. Once we knew the Chef from Bistro was running the kitchen at The New, we had to check it out. I would highly recommend both for the menu but also the ambience!"

  • "I love BR and get excited when a new restaurant opens. I have been to the New Public House 4 times and will return. I must say the food has improved much since opening and is as good as any of my other favorite places in town including their sister property , the Bistro Roca. However, the service at the New Public House continues to feel like a new restaurant where the staff don't yet know what they are doing; how to explain the tapas offerings; etc. Each waiter appears to have developed their own process (some leave a water pitcher - some do not) rather than being trained. I hope service will improve, but they are not close yet."

  • "We visited The New Public House for my birthday and were blown away! The restaurant exceeded our expectations both for breakfast and dinner. We also stayed in the inn above the restaurant and were very impressed with the accomodations. We will definitely be dining and staying here again! Greatest new find in Blowing Rock!"

  • "The menu has changed since our last visit and I was disppointed. The first menu was for small servings to share (or not) with a great variety. The current menu has some "beginnings" and then regular size meals. Everything we ordered was very good. The small serving menu was different."

  • "We are considered weekend "locals" as we have a place in Blowing Rock and come up frequently. We have our regular spots, but were excited to try "Public"- It was absolutely fantastic- not only was the food amazing- the price point is very good and the decore just right - service was very good and the management makes you feel as tho' you are the only customer- but not to over-do it. Just right. We can't wait to go back and have recommended to several of our good friends who are true "foodies"."

  • "We have dined at The New Public House several times since its start-up this past spring. During the busy season, the food was good, but not overall fantastic. During this last dining experience, we (a party of 6) were quite pleased with the seasonal specials the chef had created. We all shared our dishes, which are small plates designed for sharing. Being able to taste a greater variety of the menu offerings gave all of us an expanded dining experience. Will, the manager, is a most gracious host and our server James was extremely knowledgeable and attentive. We will definitely return. This is by far our favorite menu created by Chef Michael Foreman, who has had a hand in several high country restaurants."

  • "OK - pimento cheese with biscuit: biscuit was delicious and pimento cheese was good but too cold/hard. Loved the presentation in the jar. Did not need the veggies on the side. Sweet potato chips were tasty but presentation was blah - just chips on a plate. Fried green tomato and trout cakes were both presented with the same greens/tomatoes in the center of the plate - not very creative though tasty. Wine and beer were good. Our server was very attentive. We hope this makes it!"

  • "The food is delicious but the small plate format is a challenge especially for frequent visitors - as the small plates encourages tasting of multiple items (which are generally all delicious), after a few visits you have literally had everything in the menu. I would like to see them offer a few full plate choices (maybe as daily/weekly specials?) and I would be much more likely to come back more frequently- as it is, New Public house is usually a last choice for us now."

  • "Everyone was very helpful, and we felt very welcome. We enjoyed everything we ate, including dessert and coffee. It was delicious. Sure, when you get small plates or tapas you may like certain things more than others, but everything was prepared well and using quality ingredients. LOVED the pickles and the pimiento cheese. Many tables, especially 2-tops, include banquette type seating (bench / chairs). I'm always disappointed to find I have to eat in that kind of set-up, because I don't like feeling like my dining neighbors are 12 inches from me. There are several standalone tables as well, but they appeared to all be 4-tops. Anyway, we did love the food and service and plan on returning many times, as we live within an hour away."

  • "I really liked the prices, the small plates, the diversity of the menu. Get your waiter to walk you through their favorites. The pimento spread in a jar was a nice touch for an appetizer. Favorite was the Trout Cake for the entree. Overall a good experience and didn't leave feeling over full and over charged. A different dining experience but I enjoyed it. Just what Blowing Rock needed!"

  • "Fun, new dining experience in Blowing Rock. To be adventurous, we let our waiter pick all of our selections. So, it was a surprise with each round and we rated each dish as a group. The service was very attentive and prompt with drinks and dishes. Not an open table in the house. Our guests loved the experience, put a few pics on FB and can't wait to go back!"

  • "I want the New Public House to be better than it is. It has so much potential given the owners other restaurant at Bistro Roca. This last visit was for breakfast. The trout cake Benedict was good but not great - missing a little something. Despite us being one of 3 diners, it took an inordinate amount of time and then the food was cold. I will keep coming back and hope it improves."

  • "It was the menu items that got us to change our mind at the last minute and try this restaurant. They are/were 12 weeks old when we visited. We had some unique dishes including rabbit livers (which I did not even considered trying!) that my husband went crazy over! The food or drink here will not disappoint. I would certainly go back I was a bit disappointed with our server who seemed pretty disconnected. We had to ask another server for bread, as the place was very busy and they tables turned over pretty quickly. The food comes fast. Unless you delay ordering, you can be full in 30 minutes or less! I would not recommend if you want a romantic dinner - too much going on there."

  • "We are huge fans of the sister restaurants of Gideon Ridge and Bistro Roca. Our expectations for the NPH are always high. Recently we ate brunch expecting great things. While the food was good, it wasn't spectacular and was served less than warm. The service was very good and the atmosphere is nice. We have dined there now several times, and we always wonder what we missed when we leave. We want the NPH to do well and will continue to support them, but we do hope they step up their game to meet the high quality of their sister restaurants."

  • "We visited this restaurant at the advice of a friend and were not disappointed! The restaurant manager took the time to help us make a wine selection and the young woman who was our server (Chelsea) did an awesome job helping us navigate the Tapas style menu. We ordered several of the small plates and shared everything. It was all delicious and well presented. Hope to be returning to this "hidden gem" soon. I would recommend ordering approximately 3 small plates per person at your table."

  • "Tappas styled dining with Southern cooking flair. The shrimp and grits were amazing. As was the Mason of Bacon...yes, bacon slices served in a Mason jar with dipping sauce. Seriously, what is not to love about that?! First time there in from out of town and we will definitely return when there again."
