A word from The National NYC - lower east side
The globe-trotting but concise menu alights on French, Spanish, Italian, American, Mexican, and even Hungarian cuisine, and all the dishes go well together under the umbrella of interesting comfort food. This chic restaurant shows vintage mirrors lined up on a subway-tiled wall. Big, globular lights, and an eight-seat bar. This small and cozy restaurant, not to be confused with the larger establishment on the East Side has a small but varied menu and the food is well-cooked and presented. Service is friendly and efficient. The wine list is short but gives a good choice and there are some home made fruit drinks. This is definitely an enjoyable spot.

We went last saturday for a quick bite around 7pm and had the place to ourselves as everyone else must have been enjoying the outdoors on a great summer day. We were told it usually gets busy late, like after 9pm. The decor might not say much, but the food is really good. If in the neighborhood is a great place to try. We had the fish tacos and the pork tacos, both outstanding, especially the pork tacos. Also tried the sunchokes which are not to be missed. They also make a really cool tequila cocktail with a nice punch to it. Service was very good and attentive as well. Would definitely go back again.

We had 9P reservations for a party of 8 last Friday night and although we were not all there on time, they let us sit down. The birthday girl actually came 1.5 hours late and we were worried the kitchen would close soon. The people that work here were more than accommodating and the food was delish.

Our first time at the National was a very good experience. It is a small restaurant with a definite lower east side feel (tiles on the floor and walls, interesting mirrors, bicycle inside the front door, stuff piled on tiered shelves behind the bar), but the food is very good and the service was quick, attentive and polite. We had the fish tacos (very good), the octopus (really, really good), the crawfish pasta (my favorite dish of the night), the lobster roll (made fresh that day and tasted like it -- way better than most in NYC restaurants -- leaving lobster roll carts aside!), and the snapped peas. We were very pleased and thought the food was very good. Our server was clearly new, but was working hard to make sure we had a good time.

An exceptional dish- was it cornish hen or guinea hen- on top of buttery stuffing followed a new for now cocktail that was strong and not too strange, as cocktails can be these days. Very warm service, made us feel special.

My favourite restaurant in New York. In fact when I'm over my friends find it hard to get me to go anywhere else. Recommended to me by a waiter in an alternative restaurant in the LES who suggested it to us when we couldn't find a table in the restaurant he worked at, he said it was his favourite place to eat and I can see why. They do a chocolate flourless cake which is perfect for a gluten free diner like myself. And their tarragon gimlets are a treat. I was actually torn in my decision to write a review because I don't want to find that the next time I'm in New York I can't get a table.

Lovely dinner spot. It's a tight squeeze in there, but the ambiance still felt quite romantic. Our waitress was friendly, attentive and quick to offer suggestions. For an appetizer we ordered the beef tacos, which were to die for! So delicious. I had the game hen with black rice and he had the steak which was incredibly rich and flavorful. I had a chunk of my game hen wrapped up and forgot to take it on my out - luckily our waitress saw and came running after us with it. Leaving behind leftovers is the worst, so I'm glad she came to the rescue! Oh and the drinks were yummy too, though I don't quite remember what we ordered.

Went on the word of mouth suggestion of a good friend. And was so pleasantly surprised. Food is great. Service is cordial and non intrusive. Atmosphere - authentic NY grit, feels like the place has been there for decades. I hope the place remains as charming as I experienced it.

Good food and service. Unique ambiance. Cocktails are overpriced and not particularly good. Good for a simple dinner.

the buratta is my favorite - highly recommend as an appetizer - and is good for 2-4 people. love the scallops but a little pricey at $15 for 2 scallops. the fish tacos and the burger are always good standbys. on the lunch menu, my favorite is the tuscan kale salad - exceptionally tasty variation on a salad nicoise - wish they served it on dinner menu.

Food was average to below average and our service was pretty bad. We were immediately seated, ordered, but we had to ask for our drinks and the ticket "got lost" in the kitchen so the wait for our dinner took a long time. Great space and location. But nothing else was memorable enough to go back.
