A word from The National Bar & Dining Rooms
Iron Chef Geoffrey Zakarian brings his vision of a contemporary New York grand café to life at The National Bar & Dining Rooms. Housed in the same 1927 Emery Roth-designed building as The Benjamin Hotel, The National's all-occasion modern bistro offerings satiate guests from breakfast through late night. Modeled after the celebrated grand cafés in Europe, The National is both residential and metropolitan in design and offers thoughtful details such as antiqued mirrors, a bronze spiral staircase, distressed peacock blue and chocolate leather banquettes, classic marble table tops, and black and white glazed-tile flooring.

Each Sunday evening from 6pm to 10pm, The National features a lineup of New York City bands performing an array of musical selections such as classic jazz, funk, blues, and more.

Diner Reviews
  • "Had brunch on Saturday. I found the menu limiting. Service and food was good."

  • "We located this restaurant because of Restaurant Week. I would highly recommend."

  • "We ate here before the theater, and opted for appetizers and cocktails. The specialty cocktail list is short, but I ordered a French 75 - not on the menu - and it was made perfectly. Cheese board, meatballs with a pesto cream sauce - oh, and did I mention the macaroni and cheese with carmelized onion and gruyere? All delicious."

  • "I had done extensive research and actually based the choice of the hotel ultimately on the convienence of the restaurant. The service was not up to oar, wine was not chilled sufficiently , uncomfortable wood chairs and very noisy bar and background music..did not think Zakarian., would approve."

  • "I was really looking forward to eating at The National based on the reviews. I was disappointed all around. While I appreciate service that is on request and not hovering I would have appreciated a refill on my empty water at some point during my meal since that was the only thing I was drinking. Our server never checked on the quality of our food either which was only so-so. My roast chicken with risotto seemed bland and my husband's strip steak was rather leathery. I don't know that I would have sent our food back but it certainly wasn't the food or experience that I was hoping for."

  • "Great spot by Grand Central. Really cool atmosphere and delicious food. Check it out."

  • "The restaurant is cool and fun. The food was very good. However, our service was not. I don't think it was necessarily our waiter's fault. He had a lot of tables to serve. Regardless, we had to wait too long to order, get the check, etc."

  • "I've eaten at the National several times, and as always the hostesses are wonderful. The waiters are ok—distracted, at best. It's always was hard to get the check, which I'll never understand (dropping the ball at the moment we decide how much to tip??) The food was fine this time around, but the portions are a still bit ridiculous. My wedge salad was an entire head of lettuce, my pork chop the size of my face. The flavors are always good. Still, we enjoyed ourselves in the beautiful space and consider this spot a go-to in an otherwise (good) restaurant-scant neighborhood. Easy to make reservations, and great for groups, kids or a date. Imagine that."

  • "The noise level was unbearable. the booming club music did not help! But the food was terrific and the service attentive and thoughtful."
    Dined on 6/26/2014
  • "Rude, inattentive waitress, messed up order and food came out cold. Won't be holding anymore business breakfasts there."
    Dined on 6/26/2014
  • "I fit in at least (2) business lunches per month at the National and find that it is the exceptional venue to have them at. Not only are they local to most mid-town offices, their menu is healthy and delicious."

  • "A trendy, but not too upscale, convenient restaurant choice that should be perfect for anyone midtown east in Manhattan. Very accommodating staff, excellent/attentive servers without being "in your face" constantly. The lunch menu has more than enough excellent choices. Whether you desire the tasty "ugly burger", steak, chicken or seafood, and compliment them with scrumptious side dishes, it's all possible here. One can start with great appetizers and finish with beautifully presented (and delicious) dessert choices. We were a table of five and everyone raved and sent emails after to thank me for making the restaurant choice. They will be returning, as will I!"

  • "Food is fine. Not notably anything. Service was remarkably uninspired. First time in a long time that I tipped well under the 20% standard."
    Dined on 6/24/2014
  • "the "grilled" chicken i asked to have added to my ceasar salad tasted like boiled chicken reheated in the microwave. It was barely edible"

  • "I think Zakarian pays more attention to his TV gigs than his restaurants. The food was not hot, not tasty. It came very quickly. The lamb shanks were cool and not tasty. I make them better with fresh herbs.and a delicious sauce. Goodcservice and great wine. Will not return and neither should you."

  • "Dining at Iron Chef, Geoffrey Zakarian's restaurant, The National was an exhilarating experience. The drinks, my gosh the drinks, so perfectly crafted, so balanced. I couldn't even imagine liquor can taste this good. The atmosphere is relaxed but high quality. It feels like a place to take a special date or get drinks after work. The food was equally delectable as the drinks and the service! WOW is all I have to say. If you go there, ask for Wendy, she's a native Honduran beauty who served us. She was insightful, creative, helpful in choosing drinks and food to try. She kept it real and was so accommodating. She is the reason I would go back, aside from the amazing food and drinks that is. PLEASE GO, GO NOW!"

  • "Dining room was beautifully decorated and candle lit and your taste buds were pleased. I do wish they served smaller glasses for my young boys. However the menu did not disappoint!"

  • "I'v been to the restaurant three times - twice for dinner and once for lunch. The food is very good the service is FAIR but at lunch it's so noisy. I've sent colleagues and they had dinner last week and said food was good service was not. I'm sure Geoffrey would not be pleased..."

  • "while always enjoyable at dinner, I had never stopped for lunch. It was a business 'catch-up' lunch, but the noise was so bad it was impossible to hear normal conversation let alone do any business. I'll stick with dinner. The pulled chicken sandwich was delicious."
    Dined on 6/18/2014
  • "maybe waiter was having a bad day but it took 20 minutes to get coffee and had to ask busboy to order and get the check. it was embarrassing"
    Dined on 6/17/2014
  • "This restaurant has changed and not for the better. Very high noise level with tables closely packed to maximize number of people and profit. The food we ordered was not hot and the brussel sprouts were like hunks of charcoal."
    Dined on 6/10/2014
  • "Great vintage decor; subway tile, steel and wood accents. Good food. Good service. Large serving ice tea hit the spot. Fries a specialty. Pulled chicken was very tender and on a soft bun, so they got this completely right. But very noisy. Fine at a two seat table but for 7 people on a large round table, we could not carry on conversation."

  • "Friendly service at the bar and we enjoyed the Sunday evening jazz music. Our server was was not very familiar with the wine list and some of the selections were not available. She did not bring us bread even though we noticed every one else was receiving it. Once we were past our appetizer we didn't bother to track somebody down for it. The meatball appetizer was good as was the Atlantic Cod and Chicken entrees. We like casual modern and thought the food and atmosphere overall was just what we were looking for after an afternoon of shopping."

  • "We hardly go out for breakfast/brunch. We were traveling to NY and really wanted to try Geoffrey's restaurant. So happy we did!!! Food was wonderful. I highly recommend this on a Sunday morning. My husband had the biscuits and gravy (not your typical recipe - far better). I had the pork belly eggs benedict. Coffee was nice and strong the way I like it."
    Dined on 6/8/2014
  • "The food was perfect, the service was very attentive. The profiteroles were amazing. I personally don't drink, but my dinner companion told me the cocktails were the best she'd ever had. I did find the dining room to be a bit noisy, but a lot of people like a lively atmosphere. That one little thing would not keep me away. Highly recommended. "
    Dined on 6/5/2014
  • "With several empty tables in the dining room, we were seated in the bar area, which was beyond loud. Hostesses were completely indifferent."

  • "Let me start off by saying the steak tartare I ordered was AMAZING!!.. that was my ONLY highlight of my 8 o'clock Saturday night dinner experience at The National.Food was mediocre, Service was HORRIBLE ! There's no real dress code that should be associated with fine dining. There were people who did dress for the occasion and there were people who didn't have a clue (baseball caps jeans and flip flops sandals)..like I said very disappointed especially for a place owned by a highly decorated chef"

  • "Food was flavorless and unseasoned. Fruit flies at bar and dining area did not help. The service however was the worst. I waited more than 10 min after making eye contact 3 times for the waiter to stop looking at the bus boys cellphone. This as we were the only table in the restaurant. When I mentioned it to him, he was neither apologetic or concerned. No attention to detail. Overall a bog disappointment and I have been to both butter and red rooster amazing compared to this. "

  • "My husband and I enjoyed the food but it really was not memorable. Service was also fine but nothing special. I thought the restaurant, while beautifully fashioned, felt cold and lacked ambience."
    Dined on 5/30/2014
  • "The service was abysmal. Our waitress was more interested in gabbing with her co-workers than everything from taking orders to bringing the check and everything between. Combined with what can best be described as bland, boring food, this was a really disappointing experience. "

  • "I got the ugly burger wife got the tuna. Both tasted great. And there was something about the fries that really made them delicious. Maybe they were short-staffed on a Sunday night, but our server was sub-par. We had long stretches between seating and ordering and then it took a while to get desert order in as well. Also, we were served a different flavor of sorbet (since they were out of what we ordered) with telling us. I would not dine-in again but would order take-away."

  • "'ll be honest...our main reason for visiting this restaurant was that we discovered that it was owned by Geoffrey Zakarian, one of the judges on the Food Network's Chopped. It was also close to our hotel. So our verdict? The small plate/appetizers(meatballs, almond risotto) were good; but the main entrée (a baked/grilled chicken) was just ok(needed more seasoning). Perhaps we were expecting more, but the offerings were fairly simple, and simply prepared. It was early in the evening, so the crowd was light...yet, there was a jazz trio playing that was pretty good. Great location - close to several hotels, including the 'W' next door; and shopping. "

  • "Went to brunch with my girls. Great ambiance, great food, and they graciously accommodated my multiple food allergies to boot. We will be back!"
    Dined on 5/25/2014
  • "We had brunch on a Sunday and it was good, but for being owned by a known chef and very picky Chopped judge I wouldn't throw stones. It was plain nothing I would go out of the way for. "
    Dined on 5/25/2014
  • "I initially booked the reservation because i found out the the restaurant is a Geoffrey Zakarian restaurant. I am a huge fan of his on TV and i've never eaten at any of his restaurants. We ate charcuterie and a cheese plate to start. Everything was so tasty that we ate too much and I was a little too full before starting my entree. I ordered an Ugly Burger with bacon which i could eat every day it was sooo good. The fries were pretty special also. I wish i knew what kind of seasoning was used. I will be back again for sure."
    Dined on 5/16/2014
  • "Food was very good, but choices were limited. Emphasis on meat. Nice and roomy--try for the few booths. Drinks very good. Nice location."

  • "I used the The National for a working breakfast. While the first experience some time ago was pleasant. The recent one was less so. The food is good and the atmosphere is pleasant enough. However, the service left to be desired. I had to insist three times to get a waiter to take the order and we he come it did it with obvious disinterest. I am not sure whether I will go back again."

  • "I was expecting more from this restaurant since it was a Jeffrey Zaccharian restaurant. The food wasn't bad, but for the price and hype, it wasn't worth it. The octopus appetizer was good but tiny and a bit too salty. The burger was nothing special and the fries were over-salted. Perhaps I should have tried a fish entree or something else where maybe his cuisine would shine -- but for what I ordered, it was unimpressive. Also, noise level was ridiculously loud, which took away from the ambiance. I think once was enough for me. "

  • "Made a reservation to celebrate a major birthday of a family member. Were well taken care of and thoroughly enjoyed the experience. Food was great, and bought a cookbook for a remembrance. Highly recommend. "

  • "Not sure what was worse, the disgusting meal or the server's complete lack of interest in it. The only inquiry was when he strode past our table and said - how is everything tasting? And literally never came to a stop. My mother (it was Mother's Day) said mine's ok but...well he was gone by then, off to cavort with his coworkers. I can't remember a meal that bad in a very long time. My mother's was ok enough to eat but mine had to sit untouched. The waiter literally averted his eyes from my plate, I guess he didn't want to deal with it. Interestingly, the bus boy came to take the plates away, again no one inquired why mine was uneaten. It was revolting. Luckily I had a $50 open table check and left a tiny tip. Won't be back."
