A word from The National Bar & Dining Rooms
Iron Chef Geoffrey Zakarian brings his vision of a contemporary New York grand café to life at The National Bar & Dining Rooms. Housed in the same 1927 Emery Roth-designed building as The Benjamin Hotel, The National's all-occasion modern bistro offerings satiate guests from breakfast through late night. Modeled after the celebrated grand cafés in Europe, The National is both residential and metropolitan in design and offers thoughtful details such as antiqued mirrors, a bronze spiral staircase, distressed peacock blue and chocolate leather banquettes, classic marble table tops, and black and white glazed-tile flooring.

Each Sunday evening from 6pm to 10pm, The National features a lineup of New York City bands performing an array of musical selections such as classic jazz, funk, blues, and more.

Diner Reviews
  • "I am always on the hunt for great places in mid-town for business dinners, and was really looking forward to this Geoffrey Zakarian restaurant. Alas, the experience was not what I had hoped it would be. The seating experience on arrival was chaotic, despite having a reservation. The hostess didn't seem able to handle several arriving parties with grace. From there, the table service was lackluster at best. On the food front, one colleague's pork chop was reportedly delicious, but my grilled branzino arrived cold. Other colleagues' meals were good. No comparison with our prior night's dinner at Balthazar. I would return to the bar, which is beautiful and has a nice atmosphere. Might be worth a second try if the service improves."

  • "I eat at the restaurant a few times a year and never get acceptable service. Recent visit had me asking then waiting for salt and pepper, more water, and a napkin."

  • "Chic Euro-design ambiance. Friendly staff. Terrific location. Had breakfast, perhaps lunch and dinner is better, but food was the quality of a poor diner. However, it's really about the food. With so many good restaurants in the city to choose from I would not go back."

  • "We were there with a group of 8 for a 50th birthday celebration. Server was rushed and treated the group as an afterthought."

  • "I've been going to The National - and sending friends there - since it opened. Even hosted a large private dinner there. But on our recent visit, it was very disappointing. The hostesses were curt and overwhelmed by the Tuesday night crowd. (Would hate to see them on Saturday!) Our waitress was in a big hurry to get our order, interrupting our catching up over cocktails twice before we finally gave in and ordered. Then she left us for dead. There was a very long stretch between our first course and the mains. When we flagged her down, she went to the kitchen and emerged a couple of minutes later. My friend's fish had been reheated, we assume, because the accompaniments on the plate were cold. My chicken was dried out. A shame."

  • "The National lived up to the hype! Met a client for lunch and we had the Branzino and the cod. Both were excellent. For a side we had the brussel sprouts. All I can say is WOW! If only my mom could have done them like this growing up! I'll be back for sure...."

  • "My husband and I dined at The National for the first time. We were staying at a hotel just a few doors down and it was very conveniently located. We had a relatively early (7 PM) reservation on a Sunday night, and the place was relatively empty when we arrived, but it filled up very quickly while we were there. The service was good. The selection of food was also good. The selections were not that exotic, but we thought everything from the cocktails to dessert were prepared very well. I was impressed with the freshness of the ingredients as well as the use of unusual vegetables (including purple watercress...never had that before!) by the chef. I would recommend this to anybody who is looking for a good reliable place in midtown."

  • "And that's all I recall. Didn't like the pork belly benedict."

  • "Once again, a fine time at The National. Terrific wait-staff. Our waiter, whom we've met in prior visits, was once again super-helpful, thoughtful and attentive in every way, My wife and I bring an array of dietary complications (no dairy(her), no meat, no dairy, no sea critters (me)) to the meal, yet The National assists each time. Thank you for a fine evening."

  • "The National is a pleasing restaurant. It's atmosphere is warm and welcoming. It's physical space rings of a European cafe in the best sense. I travel the world and have the pleasure of eating in many restaurants. The National is a gem in a neighbourhood that at times lacks a soul due to hotel after hotel. Most importantly, its food selections are pleasing and satisfying and the service is polite and gentle. Very welcoming."

  • "Wrong choice when you want to have conversation with clients, noise level very high"

  • "I am a fan of Chef Zakarian so wanted to check this place out but it was nothing special. Food was weirdly not as advertised on the menu. Roasted cauliflower is mostly a plate of greens. A plate called "Roasted Vegetables" advertises beets but there's not much in the way of beets - it's mostly greens. Crisply Brussels sprouts weren't the tiniest bit crispy. My husband had the oxtail, which was also nothing special. Mushroom polenta was delicious, albeit more cream than polenta. The meatballs were good, as was the wine and the ambience. But overall, for the price - and the name - we expected more. Disappointing."

  • "Service was disappointing. Took 15 minutes to order a drink at the table. Another 15 to order. Meal itself was fine, nothing spectacular. Took over 15 minutes to pay after getting the bill."

  • "Went with my friend to catch up and had a really dissappointing experience, everything was just ok. Not really what I was expecting from a Chopped judge that's an Iron Chef's no less, especially after trying Butter earlier in the week. Way too much dressing on the salad, entree was blah and dessert was just ok. Drinks were good to start, but after a while even that was just ok. Considering I made a reservation a week in advance, why our table was right up against the bar I have no idea, the area was too loud and noisy, isn't the point of a reservation to have a decent table? Granted this all happened during restaurant week, maybe one day I will go back, but of all the food that passed by, only the burger looked worth it."

  • "The National is great. And, you can find menu items that don't break the bank. I will certainly plan to return in the future."

  • "We love The National. Just the perfect place to enjoy a good and healthy breakfast, in a nice atmosphere. Not the cheapest, but excellent food."

  • "My review is going to be short and sweet. Jeff Zakarian is a culinary genius and if the price tag for a meal at his Lamb's Club frightens you then go to The National because the food quality is superb and meets all quality expectations. That's it. Just go eat there."

  • "Grilled octopus and roasted veggie salad was very good but good service varies depending on who is on. The hostess had a bit of a snobbish attitude when I arrived and she couldn't locate my reservation, which I heard from my colleagues that is typical also in their experience, we work nearby and come for the ugly burgers and convenience but it's not as good as Homestead."

  • "This was our first time at this restaurant. It was fun and the food was great. Very busy restaurant, service was a bit slow but the servers were great and personable. We really enjoyed our meals!"

  • "Had a business lunch and ordered "The Ugly Burger"…. This has to be one of the most flavorful and best burgers that I've ever had..."

  • "The food was amazing, and everything came out to perfection. The only slip-up we experienced was our sides didn't come out with our dinner, and ended up coming after we already finished out meal."

  • "Off-Lobby restaurant for the Benjamin hotel. Tables are a bit cramped but makes for an energetic vibe. Mr. Zakarian does a mean chicken breast - perfectly roasted with crackling crisp skin and a slightly sweet brown sauce over herbed barley risotto, pearl onion and parmesan. "Ugly" burger looked great too and the hand-cut French fry I stole was perfectly crisp. House made yogurt with seasonal berries was gorgeous. Price was reasonable considering location across from Waldorf Astoria. Service was brisk and well suited to a business lunch. I'll be back to sample the menu in more detail."

  • "Food was exceptional. I had both breakfast and dinner. Food - only complaint was the Roasted Cauliflower - it was essentially a salad with approximately 1 small, sliced piece of cauliflower. Good, but not the plate of Roasted Cauliflower I expected. Standout was the granola w/ Greek yogurt and fresh berries at breakfast - the best yogurt I have had EVER!!. Service was sub par at both meals - nice, but inattentive at best. Waitress at dinner gave incorrect information pertaining to egg allergy - I had to ask her to go back to the kitchen to double-check. Had I not, the evening would have ended in a trip to the ER - honestly, this is inexcusable, and there should be no confusion when disseminating this type of information - EVER."

  • "Whenever my fiancé and I go to New York, we always go to The National. We know we won't be disappointed with their specials, which bring a variety to the great staples they have. The food is always fresh and well-seasoned, never dull or bland. The National is a great alternative to The Lamb's Club, which is the other great restaurant belonging to Chef Zakarian. The National offers more casual dining at a more reasonable price without losing impeccable food choices."

  • "I"ve been here three times and have had a similar experience on each occasion. Good bar scene, basic but well prepared food and major attitude from the staff. Surly bartenders, argumentative hostesses and amateurish waitstaff. I go for the convenient location and good food but then debate how little I can tip someone and not be a jerk myrself. Frustrating."

  • "I like the place but was treated very poorly at the door today. Not exactly sure why but the Brasserie can have my business going forward. I like this place but today had a bad experience and feel compelled to review. I showed up with four for a reservation of two. Flat no, can't accommodate, no ideas bar was empty, tables were empty. No effort no ideas for alternatives -- nothing. National was on my good guy list for midtown eating ideas but who needs the attitude."

  • "Very nice restaurant, but food is not outstanding for the price."

  • "All of our food was amazing. Cannot stop thinking about it! We had the grilled octopus as an appetizer, the pork chop, which was juicy and tender, and the menu addition of the Black Bass. Everything was fresh and cooked to perfection. The margarita and the french cosmo were delicious as well. Will definitely be recommending to everyone! 5 stars!"

  • "All of our food was very good. Our server seemed a little overwhelmed and the manager had to step in to be sure we had everything we needed with our meal and our 2nd round of drinks to accompany our dinner."

  • "Had a "central table" so had trouble hearing each other.... booths may be OK"
    Dined on 3/13/2014
  • "I wanted to love this restaurant but unfortunately it fell short. The drinks were amazing, but I can't say the same for my meal. The roasted vegetable salad was good, but too large of a portion for 1 person. Also, the short ribs were very dry and tough, which ruins the piece of meat and dining experience. The staff was pretty attentive until my entree was served. My waiter went MIA and I wanted a glass of wine! If I'm back, it will be for drinks at the bar."
    Dined on 3/12/2014
  • "This would be an excellent spot for business breakfasts if the restaurant would remove a few tables so you weren't so jammed together. Now, you can't have a private discussion. Too bad, because it's convenient and the food is good, if a bit pricey."
    Dined on 3/10/2014
  • "Given the amount of pre work breakfasts that were taking place, I found it surprising that the service was not more attentive. It took longer than it should have to get an order in. When it came there was a constant need for us to request things such as more water, condiments etc. Could do better I believe."
    Dined on 3/11/2014
  • "My husband was well pleased with his roasted chicken breast. It was prepared well and quite tender. However, I was not. I had the pork chop, which I have had in other restaurants, and although it was prepared well, was extremely fatty, in fact more fat than meat."

  • "came here for a business breakfast. was good enough. service was a little pushy for 8:30 am. Pricey for the quality of food, but good enough."
    Dined on 3/6/2014
  • "There were three of us, and in spite of having made reservations ahead of time, they put us at a table that was big enough for two, right next to a very noisy bar scene. We couldn't hear one another, and the table was very cramped. If i were to go there again, i would specify a table on the side of the restaurant to the right of the entrance, as far away from the bar as possible. I enjoyed the salad with blue cheese, and the octopus appetizer. The semi-freddo wasn't good."

  • "Seriously, this place serves the most flavorful, juicy, thick cut pork chop I have ever tasted. If you are staying at the Waldorf, W Hotel or Doubletree on Lexington Ave. this restaurant is very convenient. Friendly and professional service."
