A word from The Musket Room
The Musket Room brings the spirit of New Zealand and the country’s diverse cuisine to Manhattan’s Nolita neighborhood. Chef and owner Matt Lambert, a New Zealand native, created a menu that charts the evolution of New Zealand cuisine, from the country’s Old World traditions and Asian influences to its modern day dedication to local and seasonal offerings.

Inspired by an era in New Zealand when adventure and discovery blossomed, The Musket Room offers a modern approach to the country’s culinary past, serving dinner and drinks.

  • "Food and wine was outstanding and a great showcase of New Zealand's magnificent cuisine. Sommelier was very informative and staff were attentive and friendly. We chose the 6 course degustation menu with matching wines. We particularly liked the broccoli soup, smoked prawns, quail and the citrus sorbet. We thought the Ant Moor Sauvignon Blanc wine was fantastic but thought the Syrah wine a bit too light for the bold flavours of the red deer. Also thought the sweet meringue was an odd addition to the red deer. My husband liked the pistachio custard but I found it too rich. A very enjoyable dining experience and we thoroughly recommend it."

  • "Went on a weekday during one of those really cold January days - I imagine it gets really packed at the weekend. Delicious food, lovely décor, glad we went and would recommend. My only complaint is that my sparkling water I ordered at the bar while our table was being set up cost me $6. That is steep, even for manhattan! And the bartender lady wasn't particularly attentive, she was a little too busy checking herself out in the mirror. Luckily our waiter was super friendly and we had good service at the table."

  • "Food was imaginative and good but RIDICULOUSLY self indulgent and underwhelming. It wasn't THAT special or revolutionary to justify either the price or the inadequate portions. We left hungry, and you shouldn't leave hungry for just about 300 dollars. Wine was also expensive for being basically an ordinary bottle."

  • "The food is exceptional, this chef is inventive and is creating new, intensely flavorful dishes. The staff is charming and eager to help, but the servers sometimes do not know what they are serving and cannot describe the dish. That should not deter anyone from visiting this up and comer. My guess is that they will need a much bigger space very soon. It is a praiseworthy dining destination."

  • "This place is spectacular and should not be missed. Service was top notch. The entrees were fantastic, especially the venison and the grouper, but most plates change seasonally. The smoked scallops were also fantastic, as was the salmon. Their wine list is great, full of unknown and interesting wines from New Zealand and Australia."

  • "The restaurant has great ambience and a staff that are professional, helpful and unpretentious. There is a wonderful NZ vibe that permeates. Wine is carefully chosen for interesting and unusual New World choices. The food is ambitious but not always successful. I had the broccoli soup with broccoli oil and without the oxtail croquette. It was delicious and captured the very essence of the veg. My friends salmon appetizer was less refined and had too many flavors competing for her attention. The same was true for her Carpetbagger steak...huckleberries, beets, smokey something all overpowering the tender piece of meat. My cod was perfectly cooked, served with artichoke hearts, a purée of parsnip and a pickled mussel."

  • "My husband and I went here for our anniversary. The food was fantastic, though relied a little too much on heavy cream- maybe that's typical for new zealand cuisine? The cold smoked scallops were one my favorite courses I've ever had! My husband couldn't pick a favorite, but it might have been the deer with flavors of gin. I really liked the atmosphere. The service was perfect. They were attentive, without being annoying. We were able to feel like we came somewhere nice for dinner, but weren't made to feel out of place or anything. It wasn't super quiet. In particular, we could hear most of the conversations going on next to us. I didn't actually mind though."

  • "The menu gives you two choices of tasting menus, a six course and a ten. We opted for the ten, which was a fine option. Not everything was a ten, but the foie gras torchon (hard to ruin), the mushroom/truffle combo and the venison were. The rest ranged from good to very good. The portion sizes were enough to give you the tasting; we were very full but not stuffed. The bread was excellent, the service both skilled and attentive, and the place has a very nice rustic charm. I will recommend it to others."

  • "Had the most fantastic dining experience here. The chef came and introduced himself to us and his wife spoke with us as well. It was great to hear the back ground story behind the Musket Room. The food itself was divine. Nothing was overdone and the simple tastes but amazing presentation enhanced our experience. The Sommerlier was knowledgeable and was able to help us choose between different vintages of a great NZ pinot, he even made us cocktails of his own making as it was a special occasion fo us to be dining there. All in all I have to say this is one of the best dining experiences I have had in Manhattan."

  • "Great food, atmosphere and service. A top restaurant in Nolita. But - a bit too warm inside (even during winter). I did the 10-course tasting menu and after almost three hours eating, it started to feel a bit stuffy. Other than the temperature, truly impressive."

The tasting menu, and indeed all the menu, is filled with incredible combinations that help the quail and deer, for example, to transcend ordinary high quality ingrediants into a gustatory heavenly experience. The smoked scallops were simply celestial. In addition, there are very reasonably price terrific New Zealand wines, especially the NZ rose champagne and the NZ dessert choices!!!"

  • "The tofu gnocchi dish was one of the best vegetarian entrees I've ever had. It had a nice spice, earthy mushrooms, perfectly cooked gnocchi, and an amazing broth. I will be back to have it again. Everything else we had was amazing, including the NZ imperial stout. Service was very efficient and helpful. Great space and ambience as well."

  • "Excellent food. One of the best main dishes I've had, same for my spouse. He decided to go with the steak and cheese pie, which I thought was a risk (cheese pie with steak? huh?!) but he said it was awesome. Kind of a beef-wellington-like. That's what makes this place great. Unique food, awesome flavors. The only negative is the portion size on the appetizers vs the price (portion small, price large)."

  • "Love this place. My wife and I live in the neighborhood and had dinner there in MR's opening week and went back recently. It's as fantastic as we remember. Huge fan of the food, wines, ambiance, and service - these guys got it right the whole way around! The 'New Zealand red deer with flavors of gin' main course is a must. Only wish the quail app was a bit larger - delicious nontheless. My wife I will be back again soon!"

  • "What an amazing place tucked away in Nolita. We were entertaining friends from out of town and wanted to impress them and The Musket Room was perfect. The space is cozy and sophisticated and they greet you like dear friends as soon as you walk in. We had a beautiful view of the snow covered herb garden. We started with the Foie Gras then moved on to appetizers of Mushroom Custard, Cold Smoked Scallops and Broccoli Soup. All spectacular. We then had the Deer (amazing), Steak Pie, and the Duck finished with a deconstructed pumkin pie dessert and the pavlova. The sommelier was helpful in getting us exactly what would please all of us. Service was exceptional. Can't wait to come back. It's our new favorite place!"

  • "So many places have given this restaurant a good review. We were hoping to kick off our Super Bowl weekend with a great meal. Unfortunately, we showed up but our server didn't. It was among the most inattentive restaurant experiences I've ever had. There were plenty of servers/bus people/managers but everyone seemed to be going in different directions. The ordering process was frenzied. Our drinks didn't come, then came late. The soup came cold, twice. No one seemed to know what was going on...no one seemed to have a clue what they were supposed to be doing. I'm getting tired of hipster restaurants that seem too cool to remember that they are providing a service. Even if the food is good, the point is lost if the service isn't."

  • "I had one of the most spellbound meals here the other night. A friend and I decided to try the 10 course tasting menu and I am still dreaming about all of them. Our waiter was one of the best waitstaff I have ever encountered. He was extremely knowledgeable about the wines he served us and even had the kitchen write Happy Birthday on my friend's dessert plate since I gave her a gift- granted it was a very belated Xmas gift, but it was the attention to detail that won us over."

  • "Ambience--sophisticated-Brooklyn--wood, exposed brick, beautiful wood tables etc. Interesting wine list and good sommelier Dining at the counter, which is an option I appreciate and makes me likely to drop in for one course and a glass of wine. There is one ingredient too many on each plate, but well prepared and attractively plated. If the food were slightly simpler at the same price point, I would go regularly, since this is in my area."

  • "I booked a table here for my husband's 30th birthday present. I would highly recommend - the staff were phenomenal and really tried to tailor everything to our needs. The service was impeccable and the food was fantastic. The dessert was hands down THE best dessert I have ever had - and I eat a lot of desserts! (Pavlova). The wine was wonderful - we had trouble choosing so the staff were happy for us to taste a number of wines before making our decision. We also had a very tasty dessert cocktail each. Unfortuntely we had a large lunch that day so did not do the tasting menu - if we came back here, I would ensure I had enough room to do this! Highly recommend this restaurant and if I am ever back in NYC, I will definitely come again!"

  • "Food was excellent - very different menu, delicious mix of flavors. I vowed to come back after my app - truffled porridge. What a knockout dish! Only complaints: wow - pricey wine list!! Some by the glass are overpriced too. It's a trend we see in a lot of restaurants, and it is really irritating. As a good sommelier will tell you - you need a variety of price points on a wine list, and it is completely doable as well. Also - took forever to get bread and wait for first course was very long. We were starving by the time our bread came over, which was a good 45 minutes after we arrived. Yikes. But food was delish."

  • "Had been here once before and had a really pleasant experience. Went back a second time this visit, and it was like a different restaurant. First of all, acoustics in the back room are awful and there were several larger tables with groups near us that were VERY loud and we were struggling to even hear each other speak across the small table - not enjoyable. Our waiter was MIA half the time, empty water and wine glasses sitting for more than 15 minutes, and the portion sizes were almost half what they were the first time I dined here. Will not be in a rush to return I'm sad to say, as this place had a lot of potential. Desserts, I will note, are still wonderful."

  • "The Musket Room is one of the best places we have eaten at in New York - which is a big claim to make considering how many options there are in the city. We had a tasting menu paired with wine. Everything on the menu was really well thought out and was really unique and unlike anything else we've had before. As their menu changes daily, it is hard to recommend what to order, however, our favorite dishes was a take on cauliflower soup with curry and caviar, and the passion fruit pavlova - though everything was good. The staff is really passionate and friendly which makes the experience so much better, especially since service has gone down in the past year in the city."
