A word from The Musket Room
The Musket Room brings the spirit of New Zealand and the country’s diverse cuisine to Manhattan’s Nolita neighborhood. Chef and owner Matt Lambert, a New Zealand native, created a menu that charts the evolution of New Zealand cuisine, from the country’s Old World traditions and Asian influences to its modern day dedication to local and seasonal offerings.

Inspired by an era in New Zealand when adventure and discovery blossomed, The Musket Room offers a modern approach to the country’s culinary past, serving dinner and drinks.

The 6 course tasting menu is both inspiring and balanced: inspiring in the creativity of combined tastes and quality, balanced in its creation of a filling yet not insufficient quantity of delectable treats. Overall, a wonderful laid back restaurant serving excellent cuisine.

We did the 10 course tasting menu, which should IMO have at least two Michelin Stars, no question. Inventive and fascinating food. Som was really on game, brilliant wine list, and great staff; intelligent interactions throughout the evening. Best food I have eaten since I was at Atelier Crenn in San Francisco a couple of weeks back (they have two stars).

Food was amazing and creative. My wife and I both ordered the steak. Hers came more rare than she had in mind. They cooked her an entirely new steak (too much complexity in presentation to simply cook the steak more), then comped her wine and gave us EACH a free dessert. On top of that they apologized profusely. The food was wonderful and the waitress knowledgeable and attentive.

The food is both art on a plate and art in your mouth. Amazing combination of flavors in every dish that compete side by side with any 3 star Michelin in the city. A true gem of the New York food scene with an amazing wine list from a country that is really finding its feet in the wine world. Go in and find a food and wine experience you have never had before

We arrived at the beginning of the evening and were seated immediately. Atmosphere in the place was very rustic, quiet with trying to be, and made me feel very at ease and comfortable from the very beginning. Our server was excellent and had excellent responses to every question and really aided in creating a excellent dining experience. Individual bread were amazing. The cauliflower soup was spot on and the extra dash of caviar mixed into the dish created a unique flavor and added texture to an already awesome dish. For the main course I ordered the deer and was extremely happy with my choice. Portions were appropriate and manageable. Pear tart dessert was very good as well. All around A++ experience. Will definitely return.

We visited the Musket Room for a taste of home (the chef is from NZ). We were very excited about the menu and wine list we saw online as they had some of our favourites. In particular my companion was very keen for the pavlova. Unfortunately the wine was no longer available but we found a suitable substitute. The steak and lamb dishes were outstanding, except for the coriander in the lamb dish, which was not mentioned in the menu ( companion couldn't eat it). Pavlova was not a taste of home. We were hoping for the melt-in-mouth marshmallow feel, but it was really more of a meringue. Overall, it's an excellent restaurant, and we would recommend it, just done expect too much NZ

We got off a late plane from Sydney into JFK and had adventures getting into town. The service staff were efficient and friendly. The food was well prepared and interesting, and the menu offered an interesting range. Not Michelin rateable, but very, very good. It was advertised as a New Zealand restaurant. I couldn't see a lot that was Kiwi about the food, but they have a great selection of Southern Hemisphere wines. This is a good restaurant for a special night out, and an excellent place for a meal if you're staying in downtown Manhattan, and you've just spent 24 hours getting there from Australia or New Zealand - a serious Manhattan experience, but enough like home not to be too challenging on your first night in town.

We read about The Musket Room in the New Yorker Magazine just before we left for a short trip to New York. We had an early reservation on a Monday and found the place to be inviting, attractive and comfortable. The staff was congenial as we waited at the bar until the actual opening time came around. We shared the Foie gras torchon which was excellent. The Quail and New Zealand Red Deer main courses were both first rate creations. Our wines, a Wairarapa Pinot Noir and a Waiheke red blend (Man O' War), were both welcome adventures into the wine making industry of New Zealand.

Absolutely the best dining experience in SoHo Nolita! We live here; we know. The flavors are intricate yet very straight forward and comforting. We enjoyed the cold smoked scallops (the tiny flowers are amazing!), the tofu gnocchi (so many textures and spices), and the red deer (melts in your mouth). Perfectly prepared, plated and presented in every way. Go and enjoy!

I can't say enough good things about The Musket Room! The sommelier was well versed on New Zealand and local wines. We ordered a Red Hook Rebirth from the Sea at Dane's recommendation and were not disappointed. I had the cold smoked scallops, tofu gnocchi and strawberry pavlova and would recommend all three. Unique flavor combinations with a bit of asian influence that melted in your mouth! Downtown chic ambiance. This will be my new favorite go to restaurant. Highly recommend.

This was my 2nd time dining here in a week. I realized after taking the 1st bite of the roast quail on the 1st occasion of dining here that I made a horrible mistake in not ordering the tasting menu. So I returned and enjoyed the full tasting menu with wine parings. This chef really knows what he's doing! All of the flavors in the pallet are in perfect harmony on the palate. Each dish is prepared with care, using produce grown in the restaurant's own garden when possible. And the pairing with New Zealand wines is outstanding. One of the best parings I have ever had. Each wine enhanced each course. Can't wait to return!

We did the ten course tasting with wine pairings. There were a few hits but also a few misses. Hits: creme fraiche with caviar, foie gras, quail and red deer. Misses: oysters (gritty) and smoked scallops (smoke flavor overwhelmed). Desserts were immemorable but that might be due to the excess of beverage pairings. You get nine generous pours and a stiff cocktail as the tenth course.

The smoked scallops are amazing and everything else was very good. However, it took 20 minutes and three attempts to get water. There were a number of other minor snafus during the meal but then came the bill. I signed it, tipped well, then as I put the receipt in my pocket I noticed some charges for cocktails and appetisers we had neither ordered nor received. I tried to get someones attention but after five minutes, I took it to the bar. We waited and waited for a revised bill. Ultimately I flagged down the sommelier, who apologised profusely, and then brought me the exact same bill with the erroneous charges. A waste of time.

At first the 6 meal tasting sounded like of a lot food but it was not. It was the perfect experience. This was a great place to have a superb meal, a variety of drinks with excellent service . Six course tasting: The food was very pretty without being pretentious, and was very good. The menu we were served had perfectly prepared quail and red deer as proteins with lovely seasonal fruit and vegetable courses. It felt carefully planned and executed. The service was excellent from the kitchen, as courses were brought at a perfect pace. The chef accommodated a special request for an alternate course, since I dislike tomatoes, and gazpacho was the 1st course. Check was presented with an additional treat. The server could have paid a little more attention to our beverage service. The lighting felt right and the seating was comfortable. Tables are close, but I wasn't particularly aware of the neighbors to the right (wall to the left).
