  • "We enjoyed a very nice, quiet lunch right within the heart of the very busy California Academy of Sciences. The paella and salmon were fresh, tasty and well-prepared."

  • "I have visited and enjoyed The Moss Room many times and I must say my most recent visit was not great. The service was fair an the good was not great . We were seated close to the work area and the staff were busy talking about the patrons . My family and I could hear everything that was said. We were brought the wrong dessert menu because they were all to busy socializing and not paying attention. For the price and location this visit was poor at best."

  • "This wonderful space would stand alone as a fine dining experience anywhere in this Foodie friendly city, but is a special treat inside the California Academy of Science. The food is top notch, excellent service, and a really thoughtful wine list. Spend the entire day at the Academy--it is worth the time and money--but take a good chunk of time to enjoy the Moss Room."

  • "This is a marvelous restaurant for being in a museum; probably the best I've been to in this category as I was thoroughly impressed with the service and the food. I went for the 3-course lunch meal and that was a delight. The bill was a bit in the pricier side for lunch ($37 altogether: $33 + tea + tip), but for those searching for a top-tiered restaurant while in Golden Gate Park, this is the place to go. I stuck with the seafood: salmon cervice and lobster roll for entree. Both fabulous. The dessert, just ok. Would I return? Sure, but not in the near future. Perhaps 4 months from now..."

  • "First time here. Came with my husband and daughter. Had a nice meal with good service."

  • "All in all, we enjoyed the Moss Room. However, the tables seemed to be jammed together more. We were right next to a pillar and my chair was less than two feet from the back of a chair at the next table. The food was as good as ever. I ordered a Ramos Fizz and the bar tender indicated he wasn't familiar with that drink but would look in up. When I got the drink, it was sour instead of mildly sweet as a Ramos Fizz should be. His solution was to add simple syrup to the drink rather than to take the drink back. Not wanting to seem argumentative, I reluctantly agreed. However, the right thing would have been for him to offer to make something else."

  • "Last time I ate here (a year or more ago) I was very impressed by both ambience and food. This time, the ambience remained just as lovely but the food has taken a nose-dive. Won't be going back. Felt ripped-off for what I paid and what we got."

  • "I have never been disappointed with the meals at the Moss Room located in the downstairs of the California Academy of Science, Golden Gate Park. The ambiance is quiet & tasteful, a nice respite from the liveliness of the Aquarium & all the exhibits upstairs. The meals are artfully plated,, perfectly cooked & interesting. Very fresh using local resources. Portions are perfect for a light lunch or more if you chose courses. Check out the menu, ever-changing...always a hamburger available too!"

  • "best museum restaurant we've experienced; lovely contemporary ambience; outstanding risotto; delicious salads; a respite from the busy museum."
    Dined on 6/19/2014
  • "Although both the food and ambience were good, the service was extremely slow and haphazard: lunch took nearly 2 hours to complete. Not an effective choice for a day out at the museum."

  • "Fantastic food with simple clean tastes. Many great choices on the menue. Lovely ambience."

  • "The Moss Room is a surprise hidden inside the California Academy of Science. Getting into the restaurant is a challenge (but fortunately, the hostess called me with instructions on what to do). Once you get past all of the noisy kids and the hall displays, the restaurant is a quiet oasis. I tried the elderflower spritzer, their hummus and the pork belly sandwich. Two out of three were great. Yes... There is such a thing as too much bacon. In spite of that, the sandwich was quite edible. Recommended."

  • "What a shame. Perfect location, could even be a destination restaurant. Sadly, the uninspired menu and lackadaisical waitstaff makes the Moss Room a last choice. "

  • "In the eye of the storm at the California Academy of Sciences is a haven of tranquility and comfort--the Moss Room. Escape the human electricity and school children for a delicious meal in a tranquil natural grotto setting. The grilled halibut on risotto was excellent as was the porchetta sandwich with side salad. Butternut squash soup was generous and delicious. Many seasonal vegetarian options are also available. We make a reservation before arriving knowing that we will need a place for R&R when we spend 4 or more hours at the Academy. Gastronomic and psychic comfort! Ahhhhhhhh. "

  • "Disappointing. I expected it to be more upscale, considering the cost. No table cloths and high noise level. ( The room was filled with kids in strollers!) The food was OK, but there was much too much dressing on the salads and the Kale salad was super salty. We decided not to wait for dessert. The wine was very good, however."

  • "Have met friends here a few times before a show at the deYoung. The Moss Room never disappoints. The new menu is excellent with something for everyone. The Kale Salad, one of the best of the many I've tried at various places. Would like to see Charles Phan add a couple of dishes from his Slanted Door menu.....like crab noodles or shaking beef salad!!! All in all, excellent."

  • "This is a nice getaway from the very crowded and noisy Academy of Science crowd scene. "

  • "This restaurant is consistently good and a real hidden gem - in the bowels of the California Academy of Sciences. You don't have to pay the entrance fee to the museum to get in. The only negative to this visit is that we had to ask for bread (all other tables got it without asking). I had a wonderful beet salad to start. Although the menu can be pricey, there was a grilled cheese sandwich served with french fried for $11."

  • "After a 2+ hour event at the DeYoung, my friends and I walked over to the Academy for a relaxing late lunch in the Moss Room. Food was wonderful. Service great. And, we loved the restaurant design. It's a spot you want to linger longer in!"

  • "I would only recommend the Moss Room if there were some reason you wanted a quiet and wait staff restaurant when you were visiting the DeYoung or the Academy of Sciences. 4 of us dined on a day when the DeYoung was very crowded for Bouquets to Art. The food was a mixed bag. Mussels delicious. When did Pork Belly become the name for lardons of bacon? The spinach salad was overwhelmed with heavily smoked bacon lardons. I know bacon comes from pork belly, but that cut is usually called pork belly only when it is unsmoked or uncured. Dessert was good. We were never checked up on until we had finally flagged another waiter to ask for coffee after we had finished out lunch. When coffee came we had to ask for a dessert menu."

  • "Moss Room...a beautiful and quiet lunch spot. The lunch menu was delicious and offered many choices. Members received a special menu a pri fix menu. Perfect for us! Absolutely delicious! Second time there. It was a pre-op lunch and gave me visions of wellness and happiness. Highly recommended!"

  • "Outstanding food and service, quiet and perfect for lunch after visiting the De Young Museum. We had the three course lunch which was a little pricey but the meal was worth every penny!"

  • "We made a reservation for lunch during a day spent at the Academy of Sciences. We did not have children with us and they seated us in a separate area that happened to only have adults with no children (there were some children in the other part of the restaurant). We had a very pleasant break from all the noise and activity of the museum! The food was excellent!! Although the portions are smaller than some restaurants, it was quite sufficient. The mixed drinks were a treat and they appear to have a nice wine selection but we didn't have any wine. We'd go again and recommend this to anyone looking for a nice break from the museum activities."

  • "We had a delicious Valentines Day lunch here. Taste and quality were excellent. Appetizer and Main course portions were substantial, while the tiny dessert portions elicited an unplanned laugh from us when the plates arrived. The exception was the cotton candy which most people could not finish. Service was excellent. There are some excellent tables (by the living wall and in the Private Dining Room) which are available by request. We were placed by the kitchen because we did not know to ask for the better tables."

  • "Food was pretty good (overpriced, but that's to be expected at this location); service was very slow. Give yourself lots of time if you are planning on eating here, as it will take away from the time you can spend at the Academy of Science."

  • "I was saddened to learn that this restaurant only serves lunch now. I've eaten here a handful of times since it opened and although very pricey, the food is outstanding. 3 course lunch was $30-ish. Staff is always top notch. Should be located at the deYoung but then it wouldn't be a hidden gem anymore. Note that you do not need a museum pass to dine here."

  • "My teen granddaughter loves enhancing our museum visit with lunch here. She says it make her feel fancy. The food deffinately is not institutional, and is well presented. The desserts sing."

  • "They do have a cafeteria which may be very good but hidden below it is as good as restaurant as you will find in San Francisco, The Moss Room, at the Academy of Science in Golden Gate Park. Lovely food, reasonably priced, full bar and great wines. Go to the museum for the kid inside all of us and then escape the kids and go to the Moss room for a fabulous meal!"

  • "Second time diner. Did not disappoint! The only recommendation would be to return sorbets to the dessert menu."
    Dined on 1/7/2014
  • "The Moss Room is lovely, a beautiful calming place for a meal. Menu is not trendy or extensive, but the sole we ordered was perfectly cooked and delicious. Service was excellent. There were very few diners when we were there, so it was quiet, but I imagine the noise level never reaches the din that one finds in most restaurants."

  • "I took my cousin to this restaurant which is in the lower level of the Academy of Sciences. A hostess greeted us at the door and escorted us down to the restaurant. The ambiance with the ferns and fish swimming in the pool is wonderful. The service was absolutely superb. The food, I had the petrale sole and my cousin had the mushroom risotto, was perfect. We also received a complimentary goat cheese and arugula salad. We had the chocolate bon bon and sea salt and caramel dessert. Just a perfect small ending to an outstanding luncheon."

  • "Intimate without being crowded, soothing lighting without needing flashlights, and superb food wide-ranging despite a limited menu, the Moss Room is the perfect antidote to a day of busy sightseeing, museum-hopping, or even just a weekday escape. Three of my party had hearing problems, and we all could hear each other easily. It was perfect for the bicoastal reunion we wanted, time to catch up, impress our New York foodie friends, relax and hang out as long as we wanted, and the chocolate- peanut butter cake made my chocaholic friend swoon. Highly recommended for civilized people with good palates who also want to converse."

  • "Before or after a visit to the DeYoung or the Academy of Sciences....quiet, good food, relaxing and tucked away so you can beat the crowds at the cafeteria and visit with friends over a lovely lunch and glass of wine. I'm only sad it is no longer open for dinner"
