Chef Charles Phan of The Slanted Door Group has reopened The Moss Room with a new menu under the direction of Justine Kelly, Chef de Cuisine of The Slanted Door. Drawing upon the talents of all of our chefs at Slanted Door Group, The Moss Room features a daily lunch menu featuring the best of organic and local produce, seafood and meats. Our team brings a range of classic and new dishes to the California Academy of Sciences' in-house dining destination.
Not to be out done by the talent in the kitchen, the bar program is being led by Erik Adkins, of The Slanted Door and features craft cocktails influenced by the freshest ingredients and artisanal spirits. Wine director Chaylee Priete delivers a focused list featuring 20 by the glass options to accompany your meal. We hope to see you soon.

: The cuisine of Charles Phan's Slanted Door Group is available for special events within the California Academy of Sciences. We will design your menu for intimate receptions in African Hall, elegant cocktail parties in the Steinhart Aquarium, or large, seated dinners on the Academy’s main floor. Rental of Academy space may be arranged by contacting the California Academy of Sciences directly.
Private Party Facilities
: The Moss Room provides versatile and refined private dining spaces: intimate dining for 14 in the glass walled room, elegant cocktail receptions for 100 in the dining room, and even large parties of 140 in the Academy Cafe. Customized and upscale catering is also available for events booked with the California Academy of Sciences.

The fish in the tank were beautiful but if you don't like the smell of fish, don't sit to close. The food was very good. We went at lunch and a few miss steps were made, like the edges of the creme brule were brunt and too much liquid in the rib-i sandwich (the bottom was dripping and couldn't be picked up as a sandwich). There is an elevator to get the restaurant but don't forget to look at the stairs! Very nice open kitchen. The burgers were excellent as we watched the fish.

One waitress attempted to serve the entire room. This stole valuable time from diners there to experience the Academy. Neither the moss nor the fish are prominent enough to counter the institutional basement feeling of the restaurant.

I walked through the cafeteria which was probably not the way to go to get the best ambiance. Once down there it was lovely with the large silvery fish swimming by and the pretty bar. It was very empty for lunch that day so our service was wonderful (maybe it always is) and it was really easy to talk and enjoy my companion. I had the best Negroni I have ever ordered. I ordered scallops because what it came with sounded good. I don't care for scallops so I don't know why I did that. The spinach side dish was fabulous. I'd go again and order something different. It is expensive but a wonderful SF experience.

I've eaten at the Moss Room twice. The first time, for dinner, was lovely in all ways. The second time, for lunch, was lovely in all ways but one: service. The waitress was being trained, so I'd make allowances, except that someone should have been monitoring her and assisting her. She did not know to ask if we wanted any condiments with the lunch (which my dining partner did want), so I waved back and forth for help, which came, butonly after considerable waving. Then, I wanted a little hot coffee to warm my cup, but again, no one came over and no one noticed my waving (this time, not at all.) I really like this restaurant, but they need to work on service.

Slow service really did a number on our experience. Server approached us 15 minutes after being seated -- a couple who sat down at the same time were already served their starters before we were asked for our drink orders. My husband's drink order was wrong -- twice -- and the wrong orders came to our tables.
I'd blame high traffic or chaotic clients, but the restaurant was half empty (it was 1 pm on a weekday).

We have dined here many times when we have take guests to the California Academy of Sciences or the DeYoung Museum. It is an excellent venue for lunch - lovely moss wall, comfortable seating, stellar cuisine. A perfect respite from the activity above. I cannot say enough about the menu, preparation and presentation of the food. Fresh, seasonal, sustainable, flavorful - this description doesn't do it justice. Service is friendly, prompt and non-intrusive. Servers are completely familiar with the menu and can speak about it and the wine list knowledgeably. We will be back again and again.
