Diner Reviews
  • "I had a great time here. So glad we made a reservation since the wait for others seemed to be an hour+ on a Saturday evening. I had the lobster. We received a complimentary dessert because our waiter thought our food took too long to come out (I didn't notice the wait). I would absolutely return here in a heartbeat. The sun set made it extra romantic. My boyfriend and I both loved our meals and drinks."

  • "We went for a night out for my wife's birthday. The staff was terrific to our five year old daughter. The Servers and bussers are attentive but not obtrusive. The food is excellent: innovative and inventive without being fussy. The raw bar is wonderfully fresh. "

  • "We had not witnessed such a beautiful sunset over Newport Bridge as we did from our table at the Mooring on our recent visit in April, the colors in the sky changed from vivid oranges to deep rich blues, the heaters overhead kept us perfectly warm. The food was fresh and delicious...the service was prompt and courteous, a great way to celebrate the start to spring. "

  • "Wife ordered salad with scallops - She did not like the salad at all (had three bites) but said the scallops were cooked perfectly. I ordered a seafood pie (shrimp, lobster, fish, and scallops with herb crust). The pie was bland and the fish had a very strong flavor - almost like the fish was bad. The Pork Belly appetizer was very good although, a couple pieces were chewy and hard to cut with the butter knife provided. Bread was excellent. "

  • "The first visit to this restaurant was between Christmas and New Years 2013. I thought their famous donut bag was awful, and the francese fish dish I ordered tasted nothing like the normal francese sauces that I have had in the past. This past week, I had the occasion of trying it again, taking an associate and his wife there for dinner. once again, I ordered the gnocchi dish, and it was absolutely awful. not taste, to it what'soever. I will not be returning to this restaurant and will not recommend it."

  • "Great restaurant! The food is very good (I've eaten here numerous and have never been disappointed. Great place to bring the family for dinner. Great wine selection and a large bar. A little noisy to be a romantic dinner spot but view is can easily make up for the noise if needed."

  • "We watched the sun set over Newport Harbor while enjoying excellent New England chowder, well-prepared lobster dishes (not over-cooked, whether steamed or sautéed), excellent seared scallops paired with corn and bacon, and seafood pasta laden with shellfish that hailed from local fisheries. Our waitress was knowledgeable and delightful. We will be sure to return to The Mooring. "

  • "The Mooring is the place to go if you're in the mood for seafood. Parking in the lot in front of the restaurant is $10 but you are refunded that (in cash) upon presenting a validation ticket to your waiter/waitress. My wife and I enjoyed an array of local oysters served on a bed of shaved ice enjoyed with a glass of white wine. The New England chowder is to die for and I highly recommend the George's Bank Scallops. The only downside was that a family had their 3 year old a few tables away and the kid kept screaming like a banshee. Not the restaurant's fault but please...not a place that a kid that age would enjoy. The place is busy and boisterous. Not really a romantic type setting but the food and service is great!"

  • "I love the Mooring, the food is always great, but what happened to the incredible rolls they used to serve? Still a great dining experience."

  • "We made on-line reservations and were seated right away for our 6 pm reservation. I had requested a water view and we certainly had a beautiful one. Gorgeous sunset. Although the menu has wonderful choices, we chose the pre-fixe dinner and it was delicious. Service was attentive, friendly and prompt. We go to Newport once a year and always have a meal at the Mooring and never have been disappointed."

  • "We decided to have a late lunch around 2pm the last day of restaurant week. We were seated on the upper deck and had a great view of the marina. At first the service was speedy as the restaurant was still extremely busy. Their wine list was very extensive and impressive. We spent nearly 2 hours having lunch as the service slowed down. We were in no rush but it was still an inconvenience. Our entres were delivered before our appetizers and our dessert of gelato took nearly a half hour to come out. Our waitress was apologetic and very friendly. The food was delicious but we will probably try another place the next time we visit Newport as we would like to spend more time out in the town."

  • "Food was excellent, we had several appetizers and they were excellent- the raw bar is 5 stars. They were willing to change things to accommodate what ever we wanted. Great place and great food."

  • "We chose The Moorings after a friend recommended it and we weren't disappointed. Between us we had starters of clam chowder (rich and tasty), the lightly fried calamairi with peppers and olives (very lightly fried as stated and so didn't take away from the delicate texture of the calamari) and mains of scallops, which were cooked to perfection, and a lobster, shrimp and salmon salad which was so generous I couldn't finish it.. What I did eat was delicious though and the presentation of all the dishes was very appealing. We will definitely visit again next time we're in Newport. Thank you."

  • "Stopped by for a late lunch very early in the season. We were seated right away by a pleasant hostess. The view of the harbor was amazing. Our waitress was quick to greet us and take our drink orders. Nice selection of wines. Our orders were taken promptly and our water glasses were kept full. The food came out in a timely manner and was all very nicely displayed and tasted great. We enjoyed everything from salads to raw Bar to our lunch entrees to the chocolate-Hazelnut Gelatto. We are looking forward to trying out dinner in the near future."

  • "Went to Newport for weekend on and didn't realize until day before that it was Restaraunt Week. Thankfully, I booked a reservation for lunch the same day at The Mooring. It was packed and we would have had to wait for over an hour for a table. So it worked out perfectly... We sat down within 10 mins of arriving, seated on the porch on a beautiful day overlooking the harbor. Took advantage of the 3 course special for restaurant week. Loved my salmon salad, daughter had mussels and clams, and loved them. Overall there was a good buzz in the place . We'd go back!"

  • "My wife and I ate at The Mooring for her birthday while visiting Newport. We both had clam chowder which was very good. My wife had the salmon and I had the fish and chips. The salmon was nice, but lacking a little extra flavor. The fish and chips was very disappointing. The fish was over cooked to the point I had to cut away the batter and eat only the fish inside. The fries were soggy and the slaw was bland. My wife had the pound cake for dessert and I ordered the cheesecake. The pound cake was good and I received a devil dog instead of the cheesecake I had ordered, but it was quite good. The server was new and offered to bring the cheesecake but I declined. The training server did not stop by the table during the meal."

  • "Made myself order off the restaurant week menu. I will usually default to the seafood pasta or the seafood pie, both are fantastic in their own right. I made myself order the flank steak off the restaurant week menu, and was pleasantly surprised. The steak was cooked and seasoned perfectly. The garlic mashed potatoes were also quite good. I would highly recommend this restaurant for both the good and atmosphere."

  • "My wife and I have always been pleased by our dining experiences at The Mooring. If we lived closer, we'd be there more often. But we dine regularly at other venues of Newport Restaurant Group in Providence. Give yourself a treat!"

  • "For a place with such a good reputation, I was completely underwhelmed by their service and the food. The bar charged my friend $16 for a martini then messed up the bill twice with no apology, the food was bland (except for the clam chowder) and our server was condescending. The friendliest staff was the front of the house which checked us in to our reservation and were extremely polite and helpful."

  • "Food service excellent and the food matched the service. The bar-understaffed. The bartender took my order passed it over to another so instead of a pomegranate martini(straight up-she had even asked me if I wanted it straight up) I received a short red drink on ice with fruit that might have been a mojto. I stayed while the rest of the party was seated and she still took my money but made another drink. Not sure why she passed my order onto the other person because he was busy. I do some bartending so I was a bit curious. I would have given the client the drink for free based on my error. The other member of our party ordered the succotash-did not eat it but the waiter removed the charge and comped on the salad."

  • "I am a local here in Newport. My husband and I are going around town so we know which places and restaurants we should take our guests who come and visit us. The food is excellent and service is great. Fabulous view especially during summer season. But make sure that you make reservations ahead of time because this place can be bursting out to the seams especially during the summer."

  • "When in Newport......dine at The Mooring Restaurant...the food, service and dockside views of the harebor are excellent. This restaurant if you already do not know is part of the Newport Restaurant Group which owns this restaurant, 22 Bowen and Castle Hill in Newport, Trio in Narragansett, The Boat House in Tiverton, and Hemenway's and Waterman Grille in Providence. All we can tell you is the food and service in ALL these restaurants is always very good to excellent. Have never been disappointed at any of these restaurants but, in particular, Hemenway's is our favorite hands down! Bon appetite......"

  • "Beating ourselves up that we can't remember our waitress's name because she was fantastic! Like everyone, we got the bag of donuts, which was really good. Our dinners were pretty good. We can imagine how fantastic this place is in warm weather with the beautiful view and windows wide open. Everyone on staff were just the nicest friendliest people, and that really makes you feel welcome and embraced. Sounds trite, but it matters. We can see how this place is a must-visit spot."

  • "Our dining experience was a good one. The food was very good...we had the raw bar consisting of clams, oysters, shrimp and lobster claws. Then ordered calamari which was good and seafood pie. The pie was very tasty once we removed all the bread crumbs from the top. A little too many for us. The wine list was great and because we were celebrating our golden anniversary we received two complimentary great dessert wines. The service was exceptional with very quick response time without being rushed. All in all, the evening was lovely and very much enjoyed."

  • "Moorings is one of my favorite places in Newport, the casual atmosphere, the view, food, bar and service are all part of a very enjoyable experience. It happened to be Restaurant Week which I was not aware when I made reservations. The place was packed and the staff as always was cordial. The bar was full but we managed to get seats as the customers were most accommodating and it was only a short time before we were seated at a corner table with a spectacular view of Newport Harbor. Highly recommend it for any time of day or season."

  • "Service was great, timely & friendly. Seated promptly. The paella was an interesting dish and close to what was expected. A specific problem in preparation is when it is heated in a pan at high temperatures and/or for a long time and the rice at the sides of the pan and some surfaces becomes rock hard - dangerous for those having delicate teeth and are unsuspecting. Also, the lobster and exposed shrimp becomes tough to the degree that it is either hard work or put aside. The flavoring was right on. Also, the bread served was excellent. Overall food rating therefore is a 3."

  • "My wife and I had the Filet and Lobster tail. The Filet melted in our mouths, and the lobster tail was cooked to perfection. The Caesar salad was perfect; light dressing and freshly shaved Parmesan cheese completed the taste experience. Highly recommend this restaurant. Need to make reservations."

  • "I went with my mom and sister for a quite little 21st birthday celebration. Super quaint and cozy. There were a few more birthdays going on around me, and for much larger groups. So definitely a good choice whether you want something more intimate or a fun celebration. Mostly seafood choices, left so full and happy. Usually go for restaurant week, but their regular menu is worth a shot too"

  • "We had a very good experience at your restaurant. The chowder and scallop chowder was very very good. The bag of doughnuts were excellent. All the seafood was very good. The steak was OK. Maybe not the best steak. Maybe not cooked the right way."

  • "I was celebrating a valentines day dinner a week later than expected , and was in dire need of seclusion and the ocean. Neither of us had dined romantically in newport. We asked around to a few friends for advice on which spot was the best bet. Most said the mooring. They couldn't have been more right. Although newport is very quiet in the winter we stil felt as if their was life here. And even though we had a late start out, when we walked in we didn't feel like we were a burden for anyone working. They were so warm and welcoming. Such a rarity to find. This place is amazing- food was perfection, staff was amazing, our personal server couldn't have been any better. She was 100% knowledgable of the menu. It was an amazing Monday night."

  • "Made a reservation on a slow Monday night and still ended up in a corner away from the ocean view. Service was a high point; food you could get at 100 seafood restaurants in NE. Check out another scene before you go to the Booring. A Reservation"

  • "Upon recommendations from Newport regulars we added The Mooring Restaurant to our "must experience" list. Well we were right for putting them on the list. We arrived just at sunset and sat in the covered "indoor" seating. Our table for two had a full view of the most incredible view in New England. I walked to the restroom past the front door and over heard "at this point we are on a 2 hour wait" it was 8:30pm. So make reservations, or get ready to wait. The view is to die for, and the food just happens to be the reason to return. I didn't give five stars only because it got cold quickly in that room and my standards for a "5" are insane."

  • "A great place to sip a cocktail while you watch the sun set...then grab a wonderful seafood meal....the bag of donuts is a must as well as a table on the patio."

  • "The food was amazing. I cannot stress enough the deliciousness of the Bag of Doughnuts appetizer. They also had authentic Bermuda Rum Swizzles as a mixed drink which are hard to find. The meals were savory and each had a unique flair to them. Service was top notch as barely a moment would pass from an empty plate being moved toward the side are the waitstaff appeared from nowhere to remove it. The noise levels was pretty high so it's not the right place for an intimate setting. But if you're looking for an energetic place with great food, I highly recommend dining here, you won't regret it."

  • "We enjoyed dinner here on a recent mini getaway. When we travel I always have a hard time choosing restaurants. I do read the reviews but always try to make my own decision by menu and location etc. this time our choice for dinner was spot on. The staff were friendly and our table was perfect, overlooking the water on the patio. Love that they close it in and it was a nice enough evening to be able to sit out there. The food was delicious. The service awesome. I'd give more stars if I could. Go!!!!"

  • "Very helpful staff, always cleaning off the table as waitstaff or managers walk by but not in a pushy way. Friendly and welcoming, something not always found down by the water. Wonderful views and sunsets and this was in winter...spring and summer is always fun watching the boats in the harbor. Great menu choices, something for everyone. Lots of seafood but we had a few meat eaters who were extremely happy w/their incredible $12 burgers! Gotta lover those seafood donuts!"
