We were given a table outside with a fantastic view of the harbour and sun set. The service was excellent and several of the staff wished us a happy anniversary which was a really nice touch. The bag of donuts and the sliders were tasty appetisers. I had the swordfish and my husband had the scallops - both we're beautifully prepared and presented. In the UK we are lucky to have a number of really good restaurants to chose from where we live. We go to the Mooring when we are in Newport and always find the food to be very good along with good service. They bring hot rolls in a brown bag . We always enjoyed them but they seemed a little different on our last visit. Our waitress told us they changed suppliers. This night we sat on the back deck overlooking the harbor. We a beautiful sunset, the food was just that much more favorable. Diver scallops were prepared perfectly and an ever changing oyster selection. Everything was as always fresh. I have to tell you it was one of the best food we have had in a very long time. We came to Newport because we wanted seafood. The Mooring has an appetizer - A Bag of Doughnuts.....you HAVE TO TRY THESE. Unbelievably fantastic. We have never had anything like these before. Then we moved on to the baked lobster and for dessert we had a fabulous banana cake which was delicious. The place was extremely well-staffed and we never had to wait for anything, which was great. They bring out fresh rolls and butter at the beginning which were also great. We started with the "donuts" stuffed with lobster, shrimp and crab and had nothing but rave reviews. The clam chowder wasn't the best i've ever had, but it was still delicious. Overall everyone had a great time and its overlooking the water which can't be beat. Our server was excellent and the food was very good. One disappointment was the beet salad which was too much arugula and rock hard yellow beets, it wasn't good. This is something we would never order again. The "bag of donuts" seafood appetizer was very good and the sauce was very, very good. The entrees were excellent and well served. The wait time was long and the waitress came to the table and said the kitchen was slow because of the big crowd. I like that! She was upfront and told us we would have our meals shortly. I had been there once before and loved the location and the food. When making the reservation, they asked for a table by the windows overlooking the water, and we happily were accommodated. The service was excellent, the waiter was attentive, and the meals were brought in a timely manner. Everyone was happy and for me that's a sign of a good restaurant. When we arrived the hostess welcomed us and knew who we were, our table was waiting and it was exactly what we requested. They set us up with a great view of the water and we watched the sun set while we ate. Everything was delicious. We started with oysters from the raw bar-very fresh. Then we had the tuna tartar which was perfect. my entree was thr atlantic salmon...which was cooked perfectly. It was juicy and had great flavor. My date had the scallops and they were gorgeous. Paired nicely with chorizo. For dessert he was brought the bavarian with a candle for his bday. I had the pistachio gelato and it was creamy and delicious. We came down to Newport for a single night on a last minute whim and thus were concerned about getting dinner reservations someplace good. We took an earlier-than-normal timeslot of 5:30 PM, and afterwards were psyched that we did. My wife and I loved our meals (I had the flank steak special, and she had the gluten-free lobster, scallop and shrimp dish), though my wife's dish could have used a bit more seasoning. My 8 yr old son, the fish lover that he is, had one of the appetizers to give him his fix of lobster, crab, and shrimp without us having to break the bank to do so. It is obvious that servers are trained well and the cooks in the kitchen love food. That is what creates a memorable meal for me.
