The Modern - Dining RoomThis gem at the Museum ofThis gem at the Museum of Modern Art is a relatively quiet haven set off from a hot bar and lounge, which is much larger. It looks out onto a garden with some of the Museum's sculptures, not the actual Sculpture Garden. The food is very imaginative and very tasty. This is a four course prix fixe and not cheap, so for us more of a special occasion destination. A fennel and cockle veloute was extraordinary, so was a crudo of shrimp. The service, including the sommelier, is really wonderful. They offer half glasses of any wine by the glass, making it possible to do nice pairings with your courses. at At the end of the meal a cart comes around to offer a selection of chocolate, caramel and other little goodies to your taste. Way cool.6/14/2013 12:00:00 AMSpecialView of the art work adds to the magical culinary
Creative applications of the kitchen. We went before theatre
and one should not rush this type of dining experience.6/13/2013 12:00:00 AMAmazing experience! From beginning to end the service was impeccable. The food was outstanding! Newbie to French cuisine so really liked that they described the food as the were placing it on table. This has easily been my best dinning experience.6/13/2013 12:00:00 AMAn Experience: the Best of New YorkThe room is sophisticated, discrete and elegant and looks out over MOMA's sculpture garden. The menu contains both the adventurous and the sure fire. The amuse-bouches had layers of flavor--exquisite. We especially liked the fois gras mousse; the Asian-style dumplings, the squab, the salmon and the chocolate-hazelnut dacqoise; both the sardines and the fish and sauerkraut tart were very interesting. The service was extraordinary, and the sommelier recommended a moderately priced bottle of Cotes du Rhone from the quite expensive wine list--and it was tremendous. The prix fixe may well be the best high-end bargain in New York: a fully wonderful only-in-New-York experience. Go.6/12/2013 12:00:00 AMLunch with my sisterThis was my second visit with guests from out of town. It was a hit - yet again. The pre-fix lunch was a great choice to offer a perfect selection, without overwhelming my guests. An afternoon of wonderful artwork finished up the lunch.
The perfect, NY experience that I desired for my guests.
I will go back again...6/11/2013 12:00:00 AMGreat dining spotMy only complaint about The Modern is that the menu seldom changes. Other than that, its great food and impeccable service always satisfy me!6/10/2013 12:00:00 AMOne of my favorite NYC restaurants!Continues to be in my top 5. Quality of the food, presentation, and educated service staff are why. Dinning room is wonderful for special occasions. Bar side is a terrific value for a gourmet lunch. Always outstanding wines by the glass. Have eaten there over a dozen times, have tried literally everything on the bar side menu and have never been disappointed.6/8/2013 12:00:00 AMService was very good - butService was very good - but I'd say it was less than outstanding on this visit.
I've experienced outstanding service at this venue in the past.
Service level should NOT be variable for a Michelin rated venue!
Food was amazing.6/7/2013 12:00:00 AMGreat for foodUnfortunatelly, this restaurant need to find a way to separate with the bar because the noise is impossible to apreciated the local.6/4/2013 12:00:00 AMA memorable eveningWe chose the 4 course menu rather than the tasting menu; yet it still is a tasting menu in that each course had multiple "tastes" of small portions. Very generous amuse buche, desserts (a chocolates cart after dessert, a box of sweets to take home.) All in all, very au courant, including innovative tastes.
When asked at reservation confirmation call, I indicated it was my husband's bday - so, an additional sweet: a slice of cake which he described as divine - better even than the dessert he had chosen.
Wine list meant to impress - some wines which we know well were extremely overpriced - obviously meant for those on an expense account or less informed.
Overall, however, a memorable evening, with my favorite goat just outside the window.6/3/2013 12:00:00 AMNever miss The ModernI always lunch at The Modern when I'm in New York. It is superb. Beautiful setting, wonderful attentive staff, and the most incredible food one could imagine.5/31/2013 12:00:00 AMOne of the bestWe were in NYC for the weekend and planned a visit to MOMA, we were thrilled that the museum also had a wonderful restaurant. We had a four course fixed price meal. Each course was excellent in terms of flavour and presentation. The service was wonderful. I especially enjoyed the chocolate card which came by at the end of our meal, the handmade chocolates were divine, especially the fennel and dark chocolate. We do not eat meat but do eat fish and seafood, our needs were accomodated easily. One of our best meals, thanks.5/31/2013 12:00:00 AMGreat menuWe tried the 4-course meal, and was recommended some pairing wines. The food was outstanding, and the wines a perfect match. Good service and nice little extra snacks along the way.5/31/2013 12:00:00 AMFantastic!Had lunch in the dining room - $55 fixed price menu. The menu is varied and food preparation and quality are fantastic! Service was very good. The room is lovely with the view of the sculpture garden at MOMA. Highly recommend to foodies! Sophisticated and not pretentious.5/31/2013 12:00:00 AMExcellent dining experience,Excellent dining experience, from beginning to end. There was nothing
That could have made it better!5/30/2013 12:00:00 AMAll dishes were creativelyAll dishes were creatively conceived and carefully prepared. One of the best restaurants anywhere.5/30/2013 12:00:00 AMamazing mealI've been living in NYC for 15 years and I definitely consider this to be one of my best meals ever.
The food was just incredible, very creative and delicious. The staff was knowledgable and
kind. I can't wait to go back. We also got to sit right next to the courtyard which was lovely.5/29/2013 12:00:00 AMInteresting MenuYou need to be well healed to eat here but the menu is interesting, and the dishes are wonderful. I hope you like Foie gras since it is possible to have it in all four courses of the Pre Fix, which is the only way you can order.5/29/2013 12:00:00 AMGem in the heart of midtownI came here with my mother for her surprise visit to New York. I haven't seen her in a year, and wanted to take her somewhere special. She loved everything, from our fabulous table right by the window overlooking the sculpture garden, to the service and the excellent food.5/25/2013 12:00:00 AMExcellent service and food.Excellent service and food. A definite return. Attention to every detail.5/24/2013 12:00:00 AMAmazing food + very knowledgableAmazing food + very knowledgable servers and service!5/23/2013 12:00:00 AMThe food was enough for aThe food was enough for a dinner and delicious, service great and we enjoyed a 2:30hr dinner without noticing we were at a Restaurant at all. Great experience. Ideal for dinner.5/22/2013 12:00:00 AMGreat monday lunchWonderful meal. I took the rabbit terrine which was really fresh and tasty and then the squab with foie gras which was great! The dessert was a nice sorbet and my friends took the amazing caramel sorbet.
The service was impeccable and the cost relatively low for such a fancy restaurant!5/20/2013 12:00:00 AMserviceI have to downgrade service this time because one of the servers maintained an angry stance throughout our meal after we caught a manager's eye and asked about the whereabouts of something we had ordered.5/20/2013 12:00:00 AM"Once-in-a-lifetime"experience1)I was impressed by the service.I felt we were treated like "royal" .That's the kind of service you are willing ( not being "forced") to leave a generous tip;
2)Delicate food. Each course was beautiful and elegant like an art piece.Take you time to admire them.
3)Our seat is by the window-we had a good view of the sculpture garden .In a raining day it was peaceful and refreshing.
I strongly recommend it to people who are looking for a unique "food " experience, something beautiful, elegant and comfortable.5/18/2013 12:00:00 AMExcellent all the wayI have had the best duck in town and was amazed by the quality Of the service5/17/2013 12:00:00 AMExcellenteAn experience to be lived!!! Excellent food and ambience ... Service superb.,5/16/2013 12:00:00 AMMemorable eveningThe total experience was awesome!
Thank you,
Penny Krell5/15/2013 12:00:00 AMVery pleasant lunch! It's not as cozy as Gramercy Tavern but it was a very pleasant place to have a business lunch. Portions are small but the quality is what you would expect from a Danny Meyer restaurant. It's never just about the food at his restaurants. I made the booking but someone else paid. :-)5/15/2013 12:00:00 AMLovely experience all-aroundWe were seated promptly at a table adjoining the sculpture garden, which added to a nice ambiance. We ordered the Chef's tasting menu with wine pairing. The food was beautifully prepared, and the flavors were elegant and clean. The wine accompaniments were excellent - the wine steward was quite knowledgeable, and the selections complemented the dishes very well. The only drawbacks were that: 1) we didn't have any beverages to accompany the crudites, as we weren't served the first wine until the first course of the tasting menu (had we known that, we would have ordered an aperitif) and 2) the dishes could have been bolder, as the desserts brought the flavor punch that the main entrees lacked. The John Dory was the best dish of the night.5/15/2013 12:00:00 AMNot to be missed! We heard great things about the Modern at the MOMA and thankfully, every rumor is true - this place is amazing. Have a drink first In the vibrant bar consisting of young professionals and perhaps a few tourists. The bartenders are very accommodating .
The dining experience is incredible starting with the pleasant and knowledgable wait staff and sommelier . The Chef and his staff create amazingly presented and delicious food. The pastry chef desserts are not only delicious but also works of art befitting of the MOMA. All this in a contemporary style atmosphere overlooking the Abby A. Rockefeller Sculpture Garden. What's not to like?!5/15/2013 12:00:00 AMMuch Ado about something!!From the moment we walked in the 3 of us knew this was more than just lunch. Attention to detail and service was immediately apparent from the moment we ordered drinks (a peach martini? I'll see what the bartender can do...and he did!) 2 first tastings on a spoon...explained by the waitress and down they went. Fixed price menu included 2 choices and dessert...nothing remained on any plate (which were beautifully designed, by the way.) Would return in a MOMAnt!5/15/2013 12:00:00 AMIT WAS FANTASTIC!We celebrated Pratt Graduation last week. We had great food. We had great service. We had great conversation about the great food and great service. We spent $1,000..and thought it was worth it (can you believe and not on an expense account)! Our waiter (probably has a more sophisticated title than "waiter") and his team, were great. They seemed to keep their seriousness until the end of the meal and then we would have enjoyed asking him to sit down and enjoy a drink with us. Loved the spoon sized "teasers" at the beginning of the meal. Loved the chocolate "cart" at the end!5/14/2013 12:00:00 AMAnother Meyer's Gem?Thoroughly enjoyed our 4 course prix fixe menu. From amuse bouche to dessert, everything was flavorful and well prepared.
Service was somewhat lackluster. Our server presumptuously recommended that my dining guest change his selections to provide more diversity in texture to his multi-course menu selections. It rubbed us both in the wrong way and colored our opinion of his service although the service standards were good. Support staff was excellent.5/14/2013 12:00:00 AMFavorite placeWhen we come to NYC from DC, this is our favorite place for lunch. It is always outstanding -- and at an affordable and excellent price!! By the way, the "surprises" that accompany the meal (starter nibbles, chocolate treats, etc.) make it all the more special.5/13/2013 12:00:00 AMI hadn't realised when I bookedI hadn't realised when I booked that 'The Modern' is a one star Michelin Restaurant. Compared with other Michelin star restaurants we have eaten at in the UK and in Paris, I would have to say that the food was not of the same standard, although it was very good. The presentation was excellent, and all the little extras added to the overall experience. Both my husband and I felt that the dessert course was the best part of the meal, and we were both very happy with our choices, but we were both a bit disappointed with the quail, which was uninspiring.$38 seemed a bit excessive for a pre dinner glass of champagne, and the overall bill for two including tip was just under $500. For that kind of money, everything should have been spectacular!5/13/2013 12:00:00 AMFine Dining in a New York LandmarkThis was a birthday celebration, and every aspect of the experience fit the special occasion. We had a friendly, attentive waiter who turned out to be a very knowledgeable sommelier as well. Every ingredient of each dish packed its own vibrant flavor and was presented beautifully. The service and the menu were as generous as one would expect at a Danny Meyer establishment. And it all unfolded with a view of MOMA's sculpture garden.5/13/2013 12:00:00 AMLoved itWent for Mother's Day Brunch. Everything was delicious. A little bit too much food - too many little extras. Crazy to be complaining about too much. Not a complaint - it was all wonderful. The little extras kept coming. But the menu items were outstanding. Arctic char was wonderful - the salad - the sardines (altho I didn't get to taste them - my husband inhaled them before we could grab a taste). The steak - the salmon - the quail. THE DESSERTS. The little extra ice cream cone and candies. And the cookies we took home. Enough. We will be back.5/12/2013 12:00:00 AMA Food VacationThe Modern never disappoints me. This time I took my whole family and my Mother said it was like nothing she ever experienced in her life. The service, the food, the price. Yes, it is expensive ( my sister said she could have gone to Mexico with what the bill was) but for that special occasion, totally worth every penny in my opinion.5/12/2013 12:00:00 AMFood nicely prepared and serviceFood nicely prepared and service was good. I wish I would have had more time between lunch and dinner so that I was able to enjoy my experience at the Modern more. Great place nevertheless.5/10/2013 12:00:00 AMExcellent restaurantThe food and its presentation were excellent. Additionally, the service and the ambiance were great. We thoroughly enjoyed The Modern and would readily return.5/9/2013 12:00:00 AMFood as entertainment......Prx fixe menu with choices for all four courses and charmingly lovely additions thrown in for entertainment. You can go to a Broadway show, or eat here - or do both at just about twice the cost for decent seats.
The staff is attentive and the pacing perfect. I hope the chef likes the word "wow". Dishes are innovative and presentation somewhat surprising.
For example: seasoned popcorn, with appetizer spoons (raspberry, dark chocolate and cheese on one), mini sourdough baguettes with fresh butter: traditional and goat. The style of the salads, soups and entries was some innocent islands of cheese suoffle or multi-grain concoction or highlighted main ingredient in hand poured soup or sauce. Lovely, tasty, wow-worthy flourishes.5/9/2013 12:00:00 AMPerfect food!Meal was great. I had the rabbit and the cot, both perfectly cooked (the rabbit juice was outstanding).
Excellent value for money.
We enjoyed a very nice lunch.
Staff were quietly attentive and very professional. My husband started with tuna, scallops, salmon 3 ways and I had the Royale mushrooms. Excellent and beautifully presented.
We both had the maple brined Berkshire porkchop. A tad sweet for us but the wine was a great offset.
My dessert was the Black Currant Vacherin - delicious! My husband opted for the cheese selection and was gratified to find the staff so knowledgeable. His port was the perfect accompaniment!
All in all, a wonderful afternoon.5/8/2013 12:00:00 AMPerfect lunchIt was a great time visiting MoMa and than having lunch at The Modern. Expensive but worth every penny!5/7/2013 12:00:00 AMfine diningunforgettable experience and perfect to celebrate 20 years of marriage. charming location on the museum grounds.5/6/2013 12:00:00 AMEvery plate was amazingEspecially loved the foie gras dishes which had generous portions as well as the amazing selection on the dessert cart.5/4/2013 12:00:00 AMGreat NY Dining ExperienceWe went to 1,2&3 star restaurants while on this trip in NY. The Modern (1*) was THE best. The food was interestingly presented and inventive without being over the top. Service was great, My wife & I had a great time.5/4/2013 12:00:00 AMThe Modern maintains its excellenceWe have been to the Modern numerous times and it has become our favorite restaurant. Everything was oustanding.
Nancy Schumann, Service Director, made us feel at home, graciously wishing us Happy Anniversary. Our garcon was superb.
The entire wait staff was an exercise in graceful precision. The space was beautiful. And as always the food amazed.5/4/2013 12:00:00 AMAbsolutely WonderfulThis is the second time we have eaten here. The first time we both felt it was the best restaurant we had eaten in. This time our experience was the same. An absolutely wonderful restaurant in terms of the service, the ambiance, and the food, which is excellent, unique, and delicious. We are returning to NYC in June to meet up with friends from the UK and have already promised them a dinner at The Modern. We can hardly wait.5/4/2013 12:00:00 AM
