A word from The Modern - Bar Room
The Bar Room offers a more casual way to experience an expansive a la carte menu in a vibrant and welcoming setting. The restaurant also boasts an award-winning wine program as well as a carefully curated list of cocktails, beer and spirits. Located adjacent to The Museum of Modern Art (MoMA), the Modern’s Bar Room accepts reservations 28 days in advance. The Bar Room also includes a Bar & Lounge area that welcomes guests on a walk-in basis. The restaurant also features a prix-fixe only Dining Room. Continued

  • "This was my second time dining at the modern bar room. The bar scene is so lively. The bartenders are very nice an knowledgeable. For dinner I had the marinated tuna which is so good I wish they served more, the fois gras which is so tasty, the leeks which were delicious and the arugula salad which was perfect. For my main course I had the scallops which were so tender and perfectly cooked. I couldn't eat dessert because I was way too full. The food is so great there, the servers are very attentive, the restaurant itself is really nice. I love this place and would definitely recommend it for lunch, dinner, or even just drinks at the bar. "

  • "We enjoyed out first fantastic NY dining experience at the Modern - Bar Room together with 2 lovely glasses of Sancerre (we were only planning one but were so excited about the food we couldn't help it!). Nor could we help having dessert and I'm not a dessert fan! My friend's scallops were gorgeous, my pork loin confit was incredible and our shared carrots were without doubt the best carrots we had both ever eaten. Congratulations to the kitchen and the floor staff for getting everything right for pre-mid-post gallery visits or simply an excuse to enjoy great food in terrific setting! "

  • "We've always loved the Bar Room but what a surprise to find there is a new chef who seems to be a minimalist. In an apparent effort to remake the menu in his own image he has chopped it into a small fraction of what it was. Five (5!) entrees is all there is to choose from. Five appetizers and five other dishes, basically also appetizers or maybe side orders. And the dishes are tiny. The grilled scallop entree consisted of four (4! count 'em) scallops. The food, what there was of it, was tasty, but really ... Since we had eaten there so often before it never occurred to us to check the menu online. We won't make that mistake again and we urge other potential patrons to do so to make sure things have improved before making a reservation."

  • "Love this place. I had the chicken breast and it was served sliced, moist and bursting with flavor. My Chardonnay choice was $30 per glass...gulp! But it was a generous pour and in the end I must say it was the perfect choice to go with the chicken and I would replicate this dinner all over again. Divine! The bar which stretches the entire length of the restaurant is beautiful and creates the perfect ambiance."

  • "Small menu but still too many tantalizing choices. We devoured our shared appetizer of miniature lobster rolls with smiles and sighs...just a few bites, but ever so yummy. Scallops and pork entrees were well presented and delicious, although the brussels sprouts would have been better roasted until almost sweet. Roasted carrots tasted as good as they looked. Cheese course with warmed raisin bread topped off another grand experience at The Modern. A plus: our waiter provided a taste of wine by the glass that just didn't do it for me and immediately asked what I liked and suggested an alternative. Delicious."

  • "Excellent bar and knowledgeable server. The menu is limited, but there will be something for everyone. We started with a very good arugula and endive salad, which was nicely portioned. The big disappointment was the size of the entree. I ordered the grouper, which was a finger-sized portion weighing about two to three ounces, set in a lovely sauce with a scattering of morels. It was excellent, but I rarely leave a restaurant hungry and this time I did, after spending $180 for dinner for two, three drinks and gratuity. I suppose they must do something to distinguish themselves from The Modern Restaurant, which is much more expensive, but the degree to which they cut the portions went too far."

  • "The Modern was my favorite restaurant and I knew the transition of the chef leaving would be rough, but I was shocked by the change to the menu and service. Different structure, fewer choices and those that do remain are less appetizing. This can all be understood in the context of a chef changing, but to top it off I could not get over how poor the service was as well. While I am sure the waitstaff are getting it constantly from patrons about the changes, hostile defensiveness is not the optimal response. Discussing the transition and highlighting new menu items is a far better approach than being told to go to Gabriel's new restaurant if that is the kind of food you're in search of. I hope they can right the ship, but it will take time."

Poor service quality: didn't keep track of whose order was whose (and there were only 3 of us), had to stand up and walk to someone to ask for a bill, gave my coat ticket to the front desk and then found a guy standing there with my caot 10 minutes later rather him having taken 5 steps to hand the coat to me. Very disappointing service. Food was fine, but nothing extraordinary."

  • "I try to visit each time I am in the city. Visually this is perhaps my favorite restaurant anywhere, it is perfectly appointed. Service is professional, never there when I don't need anything, always there when I do. Food of the highest quality in ingredients, preparation and presentation. House cocktails are imaginative and balanced, and the wine list is, in my estimation, a work of art itself and the by-the-glass offerings are just numerous enough to make a glass or two for lunch a grand affair. Go at least once then go next door and enjoy the MoMA."

  • "First time for lunch in the Bar Room since the new chef has taken over…both apps were stunning…my Tagliatelle w/wild mushrooms would have made from a perfect main course and my friends foamy mushroom soup had us both anticipating the mains. But we were both mildly disappointed…my Scallop course was technically fine, but it seemed to have been sitting on the pass a bit too long and was perhaps too simple to truly excite. The puny bits of steamed broccoli were almost an afterthought. My friends pork loin looked amazing, and had wonderful flavors going on, but was surprisingly tough. OK, maybe tough is a bit hard, but it certainly was chewy. The food is normally a solid four-stars here, but on this day just managed (barely) a three…"

  • "The bar room at the Modern is extremely attractive, tables well appointed, with interesting food and excellent, friendly service. We enjoyed our dinner, but the menu (described as "new") by the captain who seated us wasn't nearly as interesting as the one we had several months ago. For my husband and me, it's a special occasion restaurant. The prices are not alarming (not like in the main Modern room), but add up to a point that's beyond a casual meal. Probably not a problem for many other diners, who included the jeans-and-backpack crowd in addition to the dark suits just coming from the office. A great place to go after visiting MoMA, which closes at 5:30 on weeknights, just in time for a drink and a nice, sophisticated meal."

I looked like they had barely braised it and it was pink in the middle. Very unappetizing. The zero proof drinks are good--especially the citrus one with salt!"

Had my bday lunch there recently and got a superstar treatment and food was superb, then came back again for dinner a week later with a date and it was even better - food was amazing and it was very romantic setting.   • "I have often eaten at the Modern and was surprised that so many choices were no longer available. I was told that a new chef had just taken over 3 days ago, and that the menu was being retooled. We made our choices and decided to share the salad and appetizer, then ordered our second courses. The service was excellent and understanding, the food good. I am glad they still have the Tomcat Bakery rolls, which resemble the Hungarian kifli. I hope that eventually the menu will once again include more choices."

  • "Beware, much has changed. The chef left and the menu radically reduced. Even dishes that remained, e.g., an extraordinarily rich mushroom soup is now mediocre. How can a restaurant of this class be unable to serve steak tartar without onions "because all of it is prepared in advance"! The jury really is out on the Modern Bar. I advise not going until there's a favorable verdict."

  • "It was fine - dishes are tiny, but filling. Wine menu is expensive. Fills up rapidly after noon, so if you can go for lunch at 11/11:30 it is a bit more quiet and manageable."
