A word from The Mermaid Oyster Bar
Upon entering The Mermaid Oyster Bar, diners feel as though they’ve escaped the city on a beach vacation. Offering delicious food in a welcoming atmosphere, patrons can enjoy a relaxing and leisurely dining experience away from the hustle and bustle of busy New York City streets. Bringing a bite of the beach to the West Village, this casual neighborhood spot combines a laid-back fish shack mentality with a menu that reads like an oyster bar’s greatest hits: an extensive raw bar boasting 16 varieties of oysters daily; clam shack favorites like steamers, roasted mussels and fried oysters; and a variety of simply prepared whole fish and fish sandwiches. The cocktails and beers on tap and the rollicking classic rock-country playlist evoke the nostalgia of summer on every visit. Continued

  • "Had an excellent meal, perfect for hanging out with friends. 2 caveats: One of my friends is gluten-sensitive, and there weren't many options on the menu for him; another friend doesn't do well with spicy food, and for a seafood place it is surprising how many of the mains, sides and apps are spicy. I loved it, but good to be aware of if either of those is a consideration. Can't wait to go back for the "happy hour" with discount oysters!"

  • "Nice spot to pop in for some oysters/apps and drinks. Didn't love a lot of the menu items we tasted, but has a great atmosphere and would go back again for some snacks and conversation at the bar."

  • "Every location of the mermaid inn/oyster bars has always been great, this one I like the most because of the west village location!"

  • "Great selection, super fresh oysters. Only 2 west coast but both fantastic. Lobster knuckles escargot style were a treat and the crispy snapper was perfectly light, moist and delicious. Fantastic service and overall pleasant atmosphere,"

  • "The mermaid was very enjoyable from start to finish. We got there during happy hour. We were able to order from both menus. They had lots of yummy food options and great drinks. We were very pleased and will return again!"

  • "This is the place if you like raw oysters at bargain early-bird prices and don't mind the noise and congestion. Unfortunately, my wife and I like neither. We do, however, like quiet (hardly possible here) and fired oysters which are excellent here. There is a second quieter room that we were lucky enough to find a table (we arrived at the 5:00 PM opening). So, I give this a one thumbs up recommendation for those foodies who are adventuresome enough to risk raw oysters."

  • "We frequent the Mermaids and always have a great meal and fun time. The staff is on it. The UWS Mermaid is closer but sometimes you have to get out of the hood and visit another Mermaid, they are all good. This one is for late night fun. Oysters are so fresh and yummy."

  • "If you could hear your date over the loud groups of hipsters that call this place home, you could really enjoy the wide array of fresh oysters and seafood. Very small menu, but will probably go back when the nighly special is good."

  • "Came here for happy hour oysters for my birthday. Simply delicious. We ordered the East Coast ones for happy hour, sadly they didn't have the West Coast happy hour ones anymore. Also ordered some of the sliders which we delicious as well. The shrimp and avocado one was really good - that sauce they put in it... yum. At the end of the meal they gave us dessert! They found out it was my birthday so they gave me a candle in it too, so that was a really nice touch (the waitress overheard us talking about my birthday) so I would say she was super attentive. I also got a Mermaid Mary which is their version of a bloody mary and that was really good - it had a good spicy kick to it that some might say is too spicy, but I really liked it."

  • "We have been to the Mermaid Inn as well as the Oyster Bar multiple time, and it never fails - delicious food, solid service. The corn and lobster fritters were incredible... Their lobster roll was the best I've ever had. oysters with tuna were great as well, and the chocolate pudding serving at the end of you meal always feels like an extra treat. Service - very professional - the runners are fantastic - our water glasses never empty and food cleared away instantly. staff was courteous and friendly since the moment we walked in the door. it is loud and very crowded - it was on the Friday night we were in - due to the layout of the small space. overall love this place and will be coming back!"

  • "Not sure why but I've never been a huge Mermaid fan, just doesn't resonate for me. Oyster Bar is my favorite of the Mermaid group but even so nothing really stood out. Two people, ordered 5/6 dishes. Oysters fresh and tasty, ditto shrimp cocktail but selection pretty limited and not very imaginative for a place that calls itself an oyster bar, especially with Aquagrill and Lure Fish Bar to name two so nearby. Maybe their unstated concept is more "Bar with Some Oysters." Fine, more like a base hit than a home run. Lobster knuckle escargot nice thought but didn't wow. Calamari and octopus salads pretty middle of the road. Again nothing bad, but neither anything remarkable. Service adept and attentive, noise level clamorous but conversational."

  • "I came on a Monday to try out the dollar oysters ...The place is adorable and very friendly...would definitely recommend making a reservation as it was packed! Luckily I made one. between two people we had 4 glasses of the house pinot which was surprisingly not bad for a house wine, a bloody mary which was just okay - probably wouldnt order it again, the lobster risotto - also just okay, the lobster in it was good but the risotto was a little bleh. The 30 oysters we had (east and west coast) were great and so were the brussel sprouts! I can't complain about the service or anything else really..I will definitely be back and i can't wait to try more on the menu! I wish they would turn up the music a little because it was great too!"

  • "I'd definitely recommend the Monday Happy Hours. However, when I returned for Happy Hours the next day. The oysters were much smaller and sand were found in almost every oyster in the 2 dozens I've ordered. I was a bit disappointed at such a huge differences just going a day later..."

  • "Service was impeccable, super attentive without being annoying. Food came out in perfect order, all of it was super fresh and cooked perfectly, served at perfect temperatures, I could not be more pleased with my dining experience."

  • "Enjoyed the small plates and ordered our large plates (filet mignon and scallops) from the specials menu that night, both were delicious. The small plates were great too, we had the sautéed kale and fried clam strips, highly recommend both. Terrific service, knowledgeable waiter and lovely servers."

  • "Monday $1 oyster is a great deal. The rest of the menu is good, especially the Portuguese octopus and crab cakes (although skip the ceviche). The ambiance is exactly what you'd expect for a NY New England-style restaurant, only wish we didn't have to shout to hear each other (we were sitting in the back room - the front seemed quieter). Service was perfect, attentive without being overbearing."

  • "This was a delightful place for easy-going, casual, fun and laughter with friends. I would definitely return for a similar kind of occasion. Fish tacos and charred octopus were delicious compliments to the conversation. Good times!"

  • "My friend and I looooove the oyster and we have been this restaurant for a long time. Usually, their oysters and very fresh, even from Happy Hour Menu, but both West Coast / East Coast Oysters were not that flesh last time.... East Coast Oyester was too salty."

  • "Excellent small plates! We ordered 8 small plates for the two of us. That was a little too many. I would skip the mac & cheese, although very good, it tastes like most mac & cheeses. The hush puppies were dry. The lobster knuckles - EXCELLENT! Rolls - lovely! I would have given 5 stars for ambience as well, but it was way too hot in the restaurant."

  • "Daily Happy Hour until 7pm, $1 for east coast oyster, $1.75 for west coast oyster (of the day)."

  • "Serving such great oysters, it's a shame that the service level did not match the quality. Being the first guest, in a restaurant with loads of staff, I would have expected more attention from the waiters. My waiter was kind of "too cool for school" and being charming probably did not come with her attitude. Besides this, I really liked the restaurant, that seemed to be a neighborhood favourite and had this great busy feel."

  • "Overall good! Took a while for us to get seated and almost missed the happy hour but they let us still order within the hour so that was super nice of them! Great oysters they were delish .. I will be back!"

  • "Try the oyster happy hour and you will be pleased. We also enjoyed the lobster roll and lobster risotto (although the risotto could have been more al dente). The use of truffle oil adds to re flavors. French fries had more salt on them than the Dead Sea, but were delicious despite that. We really had a nice time and enjoyed the food, especially great considering the value."

  • "The food was outstanding. Salmon prepared perfectly... Absolutely delicious! Happy Hour drink and oyster selections available until 7:00 so can be part of an early dinner. The staff was knowledgeable, attentive and friendly. The decor is lively, crisp and comfy too! An exceptional evening out... Whole-heartedly recommended!"

  • "I travel the world quite a bit and have been lucky enough to encounter really amazing seafood over the years - but I must say, I have never had such delicious, flavorful oysters, tuna, or salmon at any other restaurant. The Mermaid Oyster Bar goes above the hype. What a treat! Definitely my new SoHo/West Village staple."

  • "We like this place. Both food, service and ambience. However, this time, when we asked "our waiter what day of fish is today?" He must be a new staff. He said, "we never have fish on the menu". I said, we've come years, and always ordered your fish dishes. What do you mean by you never serve fish. He insisted. So, we ordered that day's special- Lobster pot pie. That was too creamy for our taste. Later we looked at the menu more thoroughly, and found there was a salmon. Anyway, the appetizers (lobster knuckles Escargots and Seared calamari) were very good. First time no Day of Fish, and only one fish entree and the waiter... a disappointment. Yet, I will still come back."

  • "I was looking for a good place to take my boyfriend and his parents for dinner before heading to the Comedy Cellar for a 10:30PM show. There's not too much in the way of "fine dining" in very close proximity to the show, but this little gem was so much more than expected. The ambiance was so charming and warm and the wait staff were super friendly. Our waiter in particular started the evening by making conversation when he greeted us as opposed to starting with the specials of the evening. I just felt like this intro was very fitting to overall vibe of this place. The food was amazing especially the seared octopus and tuna from the raw bar. They also end the meal with complimentary chocolate pudding which was dreamy. Will def go again!"

  • "I enjoyed the experience at Mermaid Inn immensely. I decided to take my boyfriend here for his birthday dinner during happy hour. I've been to the East Village Mermaid Inn, but the oyster bar's menu looked slightly better! We had a reservation, and were seated immediately. We ordered rounds of happy hour oysters with a half chilled lobster, calamari and a lobster roll entree to split. The oysters were so delicious that we had to call an audible and get another round. It was a little tough getting the attention of our waitress at this point, because she was so busy, but we got her eventually. Otherwise the food was so fresh and of good quality, and we will be back again!"

  • "I found out about this restaurant by following a trail of good reviews, and boy did Mermaid live up to the reputation! My friends and I had a blast and enjoyed impeccable food. I was surprised by how heavy the food was, given the fact this is an "oyster bar" themed restaurant, but everyone in my party was able to find something that they loved (including one gluten free dairy free diner!). Bravo to this great little find!"

  • "Vibrant little seafood restaurant not far from Washington Square. Out of the four of us only one of us was disappointed with their selection. Oysters both raw and fried were delightful as were the crab cakes and salmon dishes, however the lobster risotto was very disappointing. The lobster was chewy, the rice was lacking in seasoning and it was luke warm. Beer excellent and wine palatable. Would return again but avoiding the risotto. Waiting staff good but as English speaking UK tourists they still continued to speak at Usain Bolt speed, which some of us found difficult."
