A word from The Mermaid Oyster Bar
Upon entering Mermaid Oyster Bar, diners feel as though they have escaped the city on a beach vacation. Offering delicious food in a welcoming atmosphere, patrons can enjoy a relaxing and leisurely dining experience away from the hustle & bustle of busy New York City streets. Bringing a bite of the beach to the West Village, this casual neighborhood spot combines a laid-back fish shack mentality with a menu that reads like an oyster bar’s greatest hits: an extensive raw bar; clam shack favorites like steamers, mussels and fried oysters; and a variety of simply prepared whole fish and fish sandwiches. The cocktails and beers on tap and the rollicking classic rock-country playlist evoke the nostalgia of summer on every visit. Continued

Diner Reviews
  • "Went here on a Saturday around 5 30 pm to grab some food before a movie at the IFC. The place was busy but I was welcome with a warm greeting and my table was ready. The sever we had was very knowledgable but seems a bit busy, looked like e was handle the whole Back section himself. We never felt unattended, in fact the food timing was just right and the we ha a great recommendation for the wine. Cite little pot de creme chocolate pudding was given as a compliment to end the meal. Cool vibe, good service, great food."

  • "Check out the daily happy hour menu with $1 oysters. It's fantastic! Avoid the wait and book your reservation a week in advance or you may have a long wait."

  • "Mermaid Oyster Bar came highly recommended and truly lived up to its charm! The space is well designed with soft mood lighting and table candles making for a welcome aura. The bar delights with unique cocktails. The food... delicious for our warm summer night! We ordered a platter of oysters (Kusshi, Beausoleil and Montauk - perfect trio), lobster and corn fritters w/ maple truffle honey (tasty) and the yellowfin tuna tartar tacos (lively on the palate). I must add a very special thank you to the waitstaff for their friendliness and professionalism. This is why we return for vacations to NYC. My sister and I look forward to our next trip to the Village, enjoying the charms of this darling gem on 79 MacDougal!!"

  • "I have been wanting to come for here for over 9 months now and I finally visitied on Friday night, I was not disappointed. We sat out the back so the noise was quite low and we could have a decent conversation. Food: Fish Taco's, Kale Caeser Salad, Tuna Crudo were all very good and the quality outstanding. Service: Attentive and not intrusive. We took our time as we were talking a fair bit and were not rushed at all. Price: Perfect. Highly recommend and will definitely be back here. It's good for a fiend catch up or a date."

  • "We've been there at least 5 times , but this was the first time at the Tuesday night crab boil……we will be there every Tuesday!"

  • "The Sunday evening Lobsterpalooza is great! A real bargain especially in the Village. The service was attentive without being intrusive. We'll be back!"

  • "Great Happy Hour specials. $1 Oysters were fantastic as were the drink specials, which led us to exploring the menu beyond the Happy Hour specials and enjoy several of the other oyster offerings."

  • "I've always loved the Mermaid Inn's East Village restaurant, and it's good to see them continuing their form at the McDougal St location. The food is terrific, we ate tapas-style with lots of small dishes, all of which were great. The lobster and corn fritters were amazing, as were the fish tacos, and of course the oysters were first rate. Service was also excellent and very friendly. I'll be back for sure."

  • "Great for happy hour - especially the drinks and $1 oysters."

  • "Made reservations and walked over with a friend - it's a perfect, cool, little neighborhood joint with a great casual vibe. Small booths and hi-2-tops, small patio seating in the front. The waitstaff was friendly and helpful, bartender adorable. The oysters were small but fabulous, and the special was a Lobster dinner - amazing! 1.25 lb lobster with corn on cob, cole slaw and potatoes for $26. It was delicious - the only drawback is they only cut the tail open and don't give you anything to clean your hands with... That said, I'd come back in a heartbeat! It's a perfect spot and I hope it doesn't get too crowded over the summer."

  • "I love ice cold fresh oysters and a tasty lobster roll with a glass of creamy chardonnay...nice dinner for a hot summer night !"

  • "We ordered the grilled octopus, jonah crab cakes, kale caesar salad, fish tacos, yellow fin tuna, hush puppies and fried green tomatoes. Hush puppies and fried green tomatoes a disappointment-very bland. Hush puppies had lumps of ?? scallop or butter chunks and had very little taste. Other dishes were excellent; Jonah crab cake had large chinks of crab, little filling which is rare to find.. Chocolate pudding is only dessert. There are other simple options to offer. e.g. gelato easy to accomplish with so many gelato establishments in the area.Ambience is very loud as mentioned by many others-very difficult to have a conversation without shouting. No air conditioning."

  • "My girlfriend and I were in the area looking for a fish restaurant for a romantic dinner. The Mermaid is small and bustling; the food was excellent, the service was friendly and the noise level wasn't so terrible that you couldn't have a conversation. Everything was delicious and the chocolate pudding at the end was a nice touch. The oysters, lobster roll and fish/shrimp/chicken tacos were all great. Make a reservation, this place is busy!"

  • "My favorite location for oysters and great (sea)food overall. When someone says they want oysters, this is where I always default to, especially with the great happy hour menu (and prices), as well as the great beer on tap. And this location in particular has a great ambiance."

  • "I finally made it in to this fabulous eatery. I shared the Mermaid Tacos and Lobster Roll with my friend and it was delicious. Already booked to go back in 2 weeks and try other things on the menu!"

  • "Our meal was excellent, perhaps the best lobster roll I have had to date. The oysters were also a delightful experience. Our server was friendly and professional making helpful recommendations which enhanced our dining experience. The decor was light and airy making a small restaurant seem cosy. We look forward to dining at the Mermaid again."

  • "I come here ofr the dollar oysters and the oyster shooters. Their osyter and appetizer happy hour is one of the best in the city for fast friendly service. Good any day of the week, but fridays get a bit crowded. Make sure you make a reservation or you will be waiting awhile"

  • "I've been to all the Mermaid locations and they each offer the same excellent delicious food, calming atmosphere and great drinks. I brought a friend who is a chef from out of town, knowing she'd love to eat lots of thoughtfully prepared seafood. We had a marvelous time and I was not surprised."

  • "Finally came to this location. I've been to the uws and east village locations and I couldn't have been happier with this mermaid inn oyster bar. Our server, Jackson, was very attentive and polite. The food was amazing as expected. Even though oyster season is coming to an end, I'm looking forward to coming here again for the other options on the menu. "

  • "A friend and I had a very dissatisfying dinner at Mermaid Inn. The service was extremely slow, the server was somewhat apathetic to our requests and seemed like she was doing us a favor. I ordered a green salad which was laden with a pungent horseradish dressing, which I sent back, which I wouldn't have ordered if I knew was served with this dressing. My half of chilled lobster was good, although I had to ask for appropriate utensils to eat it.. The chocolate pudding they served for dessert was a nice treat after a disappointing experience."

  • "I have wanted to go, since first I travelled to NYC, but only this time I succeeded, and it was just better than man wildest imagination. Wonderful, cheap oysters during happy hour, along with some other great food, of which I tried and can recommend the shrimp-avocado sliders. GO, if you have the same addiction to oysters like me and my mother."

  • "We made a reservation for 6:30 with the intent of taking advantage Of the last half hour is happy hour. Unfortunately, we waited thirty minutes to be sat despite having a reservation and were rushed through ordering happy hour drinks and oysters and as a result, could not take advantage of a second round of happy hour drinks. The food was delicious and our waiter was very nice if a little stressed. It seemed that he was the only server in the dining room. I will definitely be back but hopefully they can make good on their reservations, because isn't that the point of taking them?"

  • "We have been going to the restaurant on Tuesdays for the lobster roll special, so didn't even need to look at the menu before we ordered. We were extremely disappointed that it was no longer a special, but we didn't find out about the change until the food was on its way and we tried to order the beer with the special. Also, the hostess and our waiter didn't even seem to know about the change, so you should make sure the staff is instructed on changes that affect the customers."

  • "I knew as soon as I walked in and they were playing "Birthday" by the Sugarcubes that I was going to love the place. The Jam, the Smiths, Oasis. It was like the soundtrack of my life. Oh. And the food was great too. Lobster ceviche was just perfect, dressed with tangy carrots and celery and roasted maize for a little crunch. Took my wife for an evening out without the kids. And she loved it (all 12 oysters!) Definitely somewhere to go back to"

  • "Had an excellent meal, perfect for hanging out with friends. 2 caveats: One of my friends is gluten-sensitive, and there weren't many options on the menu for him; another friend doesn't do well with spicy food, and for a seafood place it is surprising how many of the mains, sides and apps are spicy. I loved it, but good to be aware of if either of those is a consideration. Can't wait to go back for the "happy hour" with discount oysters!"

  • "Nice spot to pop in for some oysters/apps and drinks. Didn't love a lot of the menu items we tasted, but has a great atmosphere and would go back again for some snacks and conversation at the bar."

  • "Every location of the mermaid inn/oyster bars has always been great, this one I like the most because of the west village location!"

  • "Great selection, super fresh oysters. Only 2 west coast but both fantastic. Lobster knuckles escargot style were a treat and the crispy snapper was perfectly light, moist and delicious. Fantastic service and overall pleasant atmosphere,"

  • "The mermaid was very enjoyable from start to finish. We got there during happy hour. We were able to order from both menus. They had lots of yummy food options and great drinks. We were very pleased and will return again!"

  • "This is the place if you like raw oysters at bargain early-bird prices and don't mind the noise and congestion. Unfortunately, my wife and I like neither. We do, however, like quiet (hardly possible here) and fired oysters which are excellent here. There is a second quieter room that we were lucky enough to find a table (we arrived at the 5:00 PM opening). So, I give this a one thumbs up recommendation for those foodies who are adventuresome enough to risk raw oysters."

  • "We frequent the Mermaids and always have a great meal and fun time. The staff is on it. The UWS Mermaid is closer but sometimes you have to get out of the hood and visit another Mermaid, they are all good. This one is for late night fun. Oysters are so fresh and yummy."
