The Melting Pot - RichmondDisappointing serviceWe have been to the Melting Pot many times, usually for special occasions. This was our 27th wedding anniversary. The service on this trip was not as good as we are used to: our waitress took our order and welcomed us, but several other waiters brought our food and checked in on us during the evening; we waited up to 30 minutes between courses before someone appeared to take away our food. We are used to a 4 course meal taking 2 hours but this one lasted 3 and mainly that was due to the slow service. Not sure what was going on on this particular evening, but when you spend upwards of $100 on dinner for 2, I expect a more attentive server. We arrived to find the staff had all signed a card for us, which is an amazing touch (not to mention the balloon and photo frame). Kendalyn was an amazing server, and incredibly knowledgable. She helped me choose between two drinks, and the drink she recommended (The Lover) was one of the best things I've ever tasted. Between the appetizer (cheese fondue), meal (I had a salad - he had pork, duck, lobster and beef),and dessert (the Flaming Turtle), I was taken aback by how great the food was, the atmosphere was nice and quiet for an anniversary, and we never felt pressured by the staff. - give yourself enough time - at least a couple of hours. If you're on a time crunch (ie movie, event, prom, wedding), I wouldn't chance it.
- listen closely and engage the servers - they can help you through any confusion.
- don't be loud - it's an intimate setting - don't be 'that table' the rest of the restaurant scorns
- don't bring young kids unless they can follow your directions, not have to entertain themselves by running around the restaurant, and not scream to get your attention. This is a grown-up restaurant.

To a certain extent it's kid friendly but probably none younger that 10 or 11 years old. It has a very romantic atmosphere, the music is soft and relaxing, and the booths are secluded enough so that you believe you are in your own world with your significant other or even your friends. The only thing I could complain about, and it's a trivial complaint, is the pricing for the entree is a little confusing. We ordered one for the both of us (intending to share) and recieved two and had to pay for both. It's in a nice shopping center fairly close to the Stony Point Fashion Park. There was plenty of parking and a bunch of small little shops around it, gelto etc. The inside was clean and fairly large. It's set up with some smaller little rooms off hallways that tend to make it more intimate and cave-like. It reminded me of a hotel I stayed at in Mykonos, Greece built into the side of a mountain because it was so dark.
The food was good, the service was great, I made a reservation a few weeks in advance and they were prepared when we arrived. The manager came to speak with us and ask about our experience and our server was friendly.

The food was so delicious and the setting was very romantic as we were celebrating our anniversary. I have heard people say they wouldn't pay that much for a dinner if they had to cook their own meal but for us, that was part of the whole experience that we really enjoyed.
