A word from The Med at La Valencia Hotel
La Valencia’s signature “Great Room” restaurant reminiscent of a villa overlooking the Mediterranean Sea - this tile frescoed dining room with a grand fireplace is flanked by French doors to a sunny garden patio and canopied trellis arbor and by expansive windows framing the coastline and surf of
the Pacific Ocean and Scripps Park. With its 7th floor terrace, adjacent to La V’s signature La Sala Lounge, The MED features al fresco ocean dining overlooking La V’s colorful gardens, sparkling pool and scenic coastline.
New American cuisine takes prized inspiration from the melting pot of American culture and diversity. Executive Chef Daniel Barron uses inspiring preparations and techniques to prepare the fresh and abundant bounty found in California’s farms rich with sustainable and organic providers. The seasonal fare is a captivating collection of familiar and unfamiliar dishes with unexpected ingredients served against the backdrop of the California coastline.

We were married at La V in 2003.
We occasionally have our anniversary dinner here over the years. Since the remodel, its very nice and hasn't lost its charm. we had the filet and lobster soup. Excellent. Wine was very good and nicely prepared manhattans! The view is stunning and a great place to spend a morning, lunch or evening. The Italian singer in the lounge was so good."

Dined in the attractively done
main dining rm with ocean view. Food & service were excellent. Other diners could be seen eating outdoors on the terrace, but we were the only table seated inside. The restaurant was empty. As the new owners destroyed the Whaling Bar (which had been a very popular and treasured landmark among people who live here for decades) and replaced it with a cheery cafe, there was not a local in sight. It is now a very attractive site for visitors who have no memory of what it was."

Went for Saturday late lunch.
enjoyed a great view, great service and good food."

We dine at a lot of fabulous
restaurants, I had the worst Cobb I've ever had, my husband's food was nothing to talk about, and the server was hard to track down. This place is fabulous for breakfast though and it has great views. My rec is go there during the day for breakfast or an appetizer only and enjoy the view."

Our MED dinner experience was
spoiled by loud, bluesy music coming from the adjacent lounge which just wasn't appropriate for romantic dining (OK for the lounge…). The food was also a disappointment - tough calamari starter, dry over-cooked filet mignon and frozen (not fresh) lobster salad. Would not recommend the MED for dinner based on our experience."
Dined on 7/2/2014
Beautiful ambience and vista but
poor service. Hard to find personnel to help you; they were all working but few in number. Long wait between courses. The food was so-so...some of the presentations were a little off. The calamari looked like something out of a horror movie instead of nice, bite-sized pieces. The Maine Lobster Linguine was literally a mess. The hotel is beautiful and I'd like to think we just went there on a bad night but we won't eat there again anytime soon."

I would have rated this dinning
experience 5 star. To me 5 star is perfect. La Valencia comes close but there was a problem. My wife ordered lobster bisque soup. She took only a couple of spoonful's of this soup and did not like it. Her biggest complaint was that it was warm instead of being hot. The soup's taste really bothered her. I know we should have asked to have another bowl delivered but we didn't. All of the other's in our party of 4 really enjoyed their food. Overall we really enjoyed our stay. My wife did book reservations for Friday 6/27/2014 for another party of 4. That does tell you something. By the way this is the third time we have eaten lunch their."

20 Minutes before greeted at
table, another 30 minutes before we received our wine order. Servers just seemed to walk right by us when we were ready to place an order. Terrible service all night. Food was pretty good."

Only problem was waiting a while
for our check, great lunch otherwise."

This place totally exceeded our
expectations. We were met by a friendly host who gave us the best outside table with an amazing view...first impressions usually bode well. Our waitress was so great and knowledgable and friendly. We finally settled on the Cobb salad for him and fish tacos for me...both incredibly delicious! The view was beautiful, a real Kodak moment! Also we conversed with other wonderful diners around us and recommended the fish tacos to a lady near us which she loved, too. We have great food in Berkeley but cannot come close to the awesome views and ambience that La Valencia had. When we left, the host was again so gracious and friendly...great end to a perfect experience in La Jolla. Thanks so much!"

This place is excellent. The view
was unbelievably good! I thoroughly enjoyed the view, the atmosphere and the company I was with. The only thing I did not like was my order of french dip. The quality of the bread (in the sandwich and the one given before the meal) was poor. The salad and crab cakes were excellent. I will go again but will just not order a sandwich here."
Dined on 6/13/2014
We were pleasantly surprised by
the ambience and food. The seafood bisque was outstanding, as was the sea bass. You felt like you were in Europe and the service was wonderful! We would highly recommend it. We were also surprised by the bill, since we are used to paying about 20% more in San Francisco! "

Loved the crab cake benedict. The
poached eggs were prepared just right and the cab cake was lots and lots of crab. Also try their think bacon. It is cooked just the way I like it."

I made a reservation for brunch
through open table but accidentally put in 10pm and not 10am. When we arrived there was no record of an AM reservation, but we were seated as requested anyway. The service was impeccable and personable. The food was delicious! Cant beat the view. It can be a little chilly in the morning when the outdoors balcony is still in the shade. "

The terrace has a great view and
the service is exceptional. "

Beautiful view and delicious food
but the service was lacking professionalism, sporadic, and sullen."

My husband and I were married here
8 years ago and decided to have our anniversary dinner at the La Valencia restaurant. The staff did know (I told them when I made the reservation) and the service was absolutely amazing! The food was delicious. Could not have asked for a better experience!!"

"Great for bRunch, not "Great for
bunch". Excellent service and such a great variety for brunch. Would recommend the balcony for the view."
Dined on 4/20/2014
the garden where we usually eat
was under construction. So we sat in a area that was not as nice. But everything went smoothly"
Dined on 3/30/2014
We held a small business breakfast
and it was so loud we could not hear each other."
Dined on 3/13/2014
Outstanding in all respects as
always. The Med at La V is the place to be for occasions to be remembered !"
Dined on 3/12/2014
Wait until the construction on the
terrace is done if you want to sit outside with a view. Went for lunch expecting to sit outside with a view of La Jolla Cove, but ended up in the dining room. Food was good, view was good, but not exactly what we had hoped for in terms of ambiance."
Dined on 3/10/2014
One can always count on the La
Valencia for a reliable, quality meal and dining experience."
Dined on 3/7/2014
We had a very nice experience at
la Valencia. The Sunday brunch was excellent. The staff was nice, too. We arrived 30 min earlier but had no difficulty."
Dined on 3/2/2014
We had breakfast after Valentine's
Day. Had terrace seating with its fabulous view of shoreline. Chicken-apple-sausage (maybe locally made?) was excellent, lightly herbed and not overly spiced. Staff was attentive but not intrusive, and handled an unforunately belligerent customer with grace. We'll go back!"

We were staying at La Valencia and
wanted a romantic dinner. La Mer was an excellent choice."
Dined on 2/7/2014
We had drinks and appetizers in
the lounge at La Valencia. I recommend you stay there and not go to the restaurant. The food and the service are quite good but we had a very strange experience with the host. First, he tried to seat us in an empty restaurant! We asked where all the people were and he said everyone had left (apparently at the same time!) but that others were expected. Liar! We finally got him to move us to the outdoor patio but we also had to ask again to switch tables because he put us as far from a heater as possible. So in spite of him setting the mood so poorly, we managed to have a nice evening. However, I would just stay at the lounge where this guy is not! So odd!"
Dined on 1/18/2014
Went here for breakfast. Typical
breakfast fare. The view from the balcony is very nice."
Dined on 1/3/2014
The Med is SO much better than you
would expect a hotel restaurant to be. Great service, our waiter Steven was exceptional. Good food, traditional brunch dishes were tweaked to provide interest and were well prepared."
Dined on 1/2/2014
Having brunch at the La Valencia
is surely a most delightful way to begin the New Year! Each dish was more than delicious - When we thought it couldn't get any better - the Lobster bisque was served and oh brother - hang a star on that one as they say!"
Dined on 1/1/2014
Old friends reuniting over a late
breakfast - the perfect spot. A great view, fabulous food and our servers let us talk and talk and always appeared at just the right time to take our order or provide more coffee."
Dined on 12/29/2013
Sadly, the service we received was
horrendous. Our original waiter disappeared, our order was incorrect and the remaining staff ignored our table. Will never eat here again."
Dined on 12/23/2013
I have eaten at La Valencia
numerous times. The food, including dessert was marginal. I will not be returning and it was my favorite San Diego restaurant. Overpriced considering the quality of the food."
Dined on 12/15/2013
For our holiday dinner at The Med
we arrived early to enjoy a cocktail in the lobby bar, complete with a real-life lounge singer. Very talented and seeking requests. Sound was perfect and we could hear ourselves talk. Moved to The Med for dinner and were seated in front of the fireplace. It pays to book early via Open Table for extra special touches. Warm and cozy and at a round table perfect for conversation. Starter was beet salad. Sooo good I could have eaten two. The filet mignon was melt in your mouth perfect. Scallops were a small portion, but very good. Chocolate chip bread pudding was plenty for 3 light eaters to share. Service was attentive, yet not pushy. They let us linger. We'll be back for summer dining al fresco in The Med."
Dined on 12/14/2013
The food was fantastic but the
portions were out of control. They could, and should, be scaled down greatly. We opted for the a la carte option (1 entree and 1 side) and it was more than enough for 2 people (ie: too much). Had we opted for the brunch (1 starter, 1 entree, a pastry, and dessert), we would have been overwhelmed and the quality of the food would have gotten lost in the enormity of the portions. The view is fantastic when dining on the outdoor patio."
Dined on 12/8/2013
I stayed La Valancia on 12/07 for
a night and had a dinner with my wife for our anniversary. However, the restaurant is too noisy for the party for over 30 people and my table was just next to the kitchen. I disappointed this situation very much. If you have dinner party. you should tell me when I made reservation. I believed the La Vaencia is first class 5 Star hotel in Sandiego area but I will not come back again."
Dined on 12/7/2013
The food, the view, the service -
A+. I have been dining here for many, many years, and it is always a memorable meal."
Dined on 11/9/2013
Overall a good experience. They
were a little short on waitresses and so a little slow on service. The online site did not really explain that the Oceanview Room was an outside patio experience. We were able to switch to an indoor restaurant called The Med Room. A little too cool for outside right now. That needs to be better noted in the write-up. Food was good."
Dined on 10/12/2013
The scallops and salmon were
excellent, but two steaks were definitely over cooked. The olive oil cake was over baked and dry, the drinks exceptionally expensive, and the service slow and inefficient. For years, The La Valencia has been one of our favorites, but we won't be going back any time soon."
Dined on 10/12/2013
My thanks to Jeff and staff for
allowing us a special reunion of cousins from San Diego and Australia! We could not have felt more indulged and, as the last to leave, we so appreciate the ability to have had the time to linger, laugh and enjoy such special ambiance. Jeff' went out of his way to accommodate a memorable evening for my family, our friendly and capable waitress was superb. The menu was varied and the food outstanding - salmon was delicious, filet mignon cooked to perfection."
