A word from The Med at La Valencia Hotel
La Valencia’s signature “Great Room” restaurant reminiscent of a villa overlooking the Mediterranean Sea - this tile frescoed dining room with a grand fireplace is flanked by French doors to a sunny garden patio and canopied trellis arbor and by expansive windows framing the coastline and surf of the Pacific Ocean and Scripps Park. With its 7th floor terrace, adjacent to La V’s signature La Sala Lounge, The MED features al fresco ocean dining overlooking La V’s colorful gardens, sparkling pool and scenic coastline.

New American cuisine takes prized inspiration from the melting pot of American culture and diversity. Executive Chef James Montejano uses inspiring preparations and techniques to prepare the fresh and abundant bounty found in California’s farms rich with sustainable and organic providers. The seasonal fare is a captivating collection of familiar and unfamiliar dishes with unexpected ingredients served against the backdrop of the California coastline.

I found the restaurant's ambience, and view of the beach and ocean to be wonderful. But the food was a BIG disapoinment. The salad (I forget the name) was advertised as a combination of nice vegetables with white anchovy. Far from the mark. The "vegetables" were a few slices of almost wilted arugulla, with ONE MINUTE anchovy, and a sald dressing that merely amounted to watery mayo. The La V ommelette was cold. The eggs were hard, and the crabmeat was dry and tasteless. The eggs benedict we ordered were cold. I did not complain about the food quality because we were entertaining friends and I did not want to create a scene. It will be a LONG LONG time before I return to La Valencia, assuming I ever decide it is worth the effort.

Reservation for a special occasion meant absolutely nothing to The Med. They had a record of the requests (a birthday celebration) yet absolutely no consideration was given and we were shown to an indoor table jammed in a corner. Food was overpriced and mediocre.

I had the scallops as my entrée; there were 3 scallops on the plate, along with other things on the dish. Everything was very tasty, but I was still very hungry after that meal. The waitress did tell me there would only be 3 scallops, but I thought I would take a chance, and thought possibly they would be a lot larger than they were. The other 3 people in my party got filet mignon. Again, they were still hungry as well. Had we known portions were gonna be so small, we probably would've gotten appetizer. However, w/the high $$ for the entrées, we all thought that the plates would be larger portions than they were. Very disappointed in the size of the food portions. The service, the ambience, everything else was great.

The Med is as lovely as ever. Food was quite good - better than I had remembered from three years ago. Service was excellent: unobtrusive, polite, and helpful. Each of my guests, one of them a resident of La Jolla, enjoyed the food, the ambiance, and the overall charming experience. Definitely a go-to place in La Jolla.

The new main restaurant looks great after remodeling. Best view in town plus the Old Spanish Charm was retained with updated modern furniture and dark wood flooring added. The new bathrooms also looked great. Menu choices were updated too, but not for the better. No Waldorf salad, no BLT, no familiar choices. The Med is just another restaurant trying to have interesting cuisine that doesn't taste that great instead of making good food, the key reason people come back. Salmon was undercooked and tasted old. Salmon sandwich was so so. Service was super slow, but very friendly and courteous. La Valencia is still gorgeous but in need of a better manager and chef.

The food was attractive and plated well, just missing flavor. The service started poor with no greeting while standing in front of the hostess while she discussed with a server who was taking care of a table. They looked at us and moved off. After a few moments another seated us but wait a moment right here while we clean your table. The service did raise to the level of having to ask for a water refill twice, and a cocktail once. The signature La Jolla Omlete was over powered with goat cheese and lacking in blue crab. The pancakes were sweet but served cold. I'd have to say the service destroyed the meal.

Food was just bad all around. I also posted a longer review on Yelp since you're limited to so many characters on Opentable. Compared to many other nearby restaurants especially within two blocks of The Med you'll get much better food and service for that matter elsewhere. The new chef either left early on a beautiful warm Saturday summer night or his standards for taste, quality, and execution aren't going to make the cut here for much longer with better cuisine quickly re-establishing itself in the neighborhood. Expect a disappointing dining experience especially for what you'll pay or otherwise try Cafe Le Rue Hotel La Valencia's less formal and casual sister restaurant. Food and service is much better there during the day

We were married at La V in 2003. We occasionally have our anniversary dinner here over the years. Since the remodel, its very nice and hasn't lost its charm. we had the filet and lobster soup. Excellent. Wine was very good and nicely prepared manhattans! The view is stunning and a great place to spend a morning, lunch or evening. The Italian singer in the lounge was so good.

Dined in the attractively done main dining rm with ocean view. Food & service were excellent. Other diners could be seen eating outdoors on the terrace, but we were the only table seated inside. The restaurant was empty. As the new owners destroyed the Whaling Bar (which had been a very popular and treasured landmark among people who live here for decades) and replaced it with a cheery cafe, there was not a local in sight. It is now a very attractive site for visitors who have no memory of what it was.

We dine at a lot of fabulous restaurants, I had the worst Cobb I've ever had, my husband's food was nothing to talk about, and the server was hard to track down. This place is fabulous for breakfast though and it has great views. My rec is go there during the day for breakfast or an appetizer only and enjoy the view.

Our MED dinner experience was spoiled by loud, bluesy music coming from the adjacent lounge which just wasn't appropriate for romantic dining (OK for the lounge…). The food was also a disappointment - tough calamari starter, dry over-cooked filet mignon and frozen (not fresh) lobster salad. Would not recommend the MED for dinner based on our experience.

Beautiful ambience and vista but poor service. Hard to find personnel to help you; they were all working but few in number. Long wait between courses. The food was so-so...some of the presentations were a little off. The calamari looked like something out of a horror movie instead of nice, bite-sized pieces. The Maine Lobster Linguine was literally a mess. The hotel is beautiful and I'd like to think we just went there on a bad night but we won't eat there again anytime soon.

I would have rated this dinning experience 5 star. To me 5 star is perfect. La Valencia comes close but there was a problem. My wife ordered lobster bisque soup. She took only a couple of spoonful's of this soup and did not like it. Her biggest complaint was that it was warm instead of being hot. The soup's taste really bothered her. I know we should have asked to have another bowl delivered but we didn't. All of the other's in our party of 4 really enjoyed their food. Overall we really enjoyed our stay. My wife did book reservations for Friday 6/27/2014 for another party of 4. That does tell you something. By the way this is the third time we have eaten lunch their.

This place totally exceeded our expectations. We were met by a friendly host who gave us the best outside table with an amazing view...first impressions usually bode well. Our waitress was so great and knowledgable and friendly. We finally settled on the Cobb salad for him and fish tacos for me...both incredibly delicious! The view was beautiful, a real Kodak moment! Also we conversed with other wonderful diners around us and recommended the fish tacos to a lady near us which she loved, too. We have great food in Berkeley but cannot come close to the awesome views and ambience that La Valencia had. When we left, the host was again so gracious and friendly...great end to a perfect experience in La Jolla. Thanks so much!

This place is excellent. The view was unbelievably good! I thoroughly enjoyed the view, the atmosphere and the company I was with. The only thing I did not like was my order of french dip. The quality of the bread (in the sandwich and the one given before the meal) was poor. The salad and crab cakes were excellent. I will go again but will just not order a sandwich here.
