Diner Reviews
  • "My husband and I have eaten at this restaurant many times, but this time we were very disappointed with our experience. We arrived at 6:45 and didn't leave until 9:45. We had drinks and shared an appetizer and then ordered our entrees. We asked for an order of bread, and when it came, there was one roll on a plate. Our waiter was not very attentive to our table (4 of us) and came by an hour or so after we had ordered our entrees and told us that because of a large group on the lower floor our food would be late arriving. (He did offer us a free salad for our wait.) When we finished our meal, he "tossed" our check onto the table."

  • "Took my wife to dinner for her birthday. Great waiter who really knew the specials and did a great job describing how they would taste. Excellent."

  • "We enjoyed the smoked potato gnocchi (light and fluffy!) with arugala and orange salad and ham cracklins very good. There was a special Mushroom au gratin with several varieties good portion to share. Also had the togarashi seared yellowfin tuna with avocado and Asian slaw so tasty and we finished with the saffron and wildflower honey creme brulee - fragrant and delicious."

  • "We heard about this place and the chef's preference to source ingredients within a 100 mile range. A group of 7 met there for dinner on a tuesday night and were surprised to even find a live music group that night. The service was impeccable and the food was both really creative, and flavorful. Everyone in the group enjoyed it! Parking can be found in the multilevel garage closeby, and keep in mind that outdoor dining is also an option in their front patio. A true gem in Asheville!"

  • "I took my VIP customer to dinner on a Monday night. Since we are both foodies, we are always trying new, top flight restaurants in the area. This definitely rates as a new favorite. Perfect for talking in a comfortable, relaxed but elegant atmosphere while enjoying inventive, fresh, cuisine with a great cross section of choices. I defy you NOT to find something you love on this menu. I had the Hand Cut Pappardelle-braised lamb, roasted oyster mushrooms, confit tomatoes, basil pesto, parmesan - and it was an artful and amazing presentation!"

  • "Been coming here for years now, and we are never, ever disappointed. When William purchased, were hoping food would stay consistent. It's even better! The lamb we had was out of this world. Great way to celebrate a July 4th birthday (every excuse we can get to go there, of course)."

  • "My wife and I went here for dinner. The atmosphere is an odd blend of formal and informal. Some patrons were dressed casually although the service and menu suggests it is a slightly more upscale venue. They have a vegan entree (roasted curry cauliflower with quinoa) and several vegan appetizers. My wife had a lamb pasta dish which she greatly enjoyed. The service was excellent. Our server knew the menu very well including the wine list and made some good recommendations. I would definitely return."

  • "Shared a meal with my husband while visiting in Asheville. We composed our meal from the offering of "little plates"--we had a first course of a heirloom tomato salad, a second of a warm mushroom gratin, a third of a seared gnocchi salad, and lastly a local bison sirloin. The dessert was a saffron and honey creme brulee. All were delightful tastes to the palate. We will be back next time we are in town."

  • "Food is so perfect. Not a single complaint. The service is always wonderful, not pushy and the server gives you the freedom to take your time and enjoy being there. Everything is perfect. Scallops were cooked absolutely perfect, pork shoulder was also the best I have ever had."

  • "This dinner was without a doubt the best we have enjoyed at The Marketplace in several years. It was well prepared, attractively plated and served by a very professional server. When the chef came to the table ( as this one dis0 and asked our opinion, I regard this as the signature act of one who really cares."

  • "We had a group of six on a weeknight. Food was extremely good. The server was knowledgable and beer list better than wine list. Live entertainment was very nice. We would go again."

  • "The house pickles were amazing. Roasted quail was perfect. Drinks were unique. The mac n cheese was light, not heavy and greasy. Overall it was a delightful experience."

  • "The Market Place had been a favorite for many years and we were pleased, after a long absence from Asheville to see it in new hands. A dinner a year ago was quite nice, but the absence of last minute reservations prevented us from going back over the last year. However, we had an unexpectedly nice farm-to-table dinner about two weeks ago planned and cooked by this chef. We vowed it would be the place to take our grandson and girl friend for his 21st--something more grand than college fare. We each had something different including salmon, and quail all of which was nicely served, but tasteless. We each commented that our dishes were fresh, the meats nicely cooked, but totally bland. It was a total disappointment. Service great"

  • "Visited here 4 wks ago with another couple. Enjoyed the food so much, asked another couple to join us a few days ago. Embarrassing. They both complained their food was dry (trout & quail dishes). I sent my lamb back after one bite. Tasted as if it had been in a refrigerator too long. Our server immediately brought me an alternate selection: carrot/goat cheese ravioli which I'd had on my last visit. It was very good. My husband ate his meal, but said it was only "so-so." We all agreed that we wouldn't be back any time soon."

  • "We went to celebrate our anniversary and were more than happy with the staff and food. I got a couple of small plates and my wife a large plate which provided plenty. Wonderful view as well."

  • "We were a party of four celebratiing my daughter's graduation. For the small plates, we recommend the cheese platter and the gnocchi. The cheese platter could have been an entree. The house-made gnocchi were perfect with a strongly herbed tomato sauce. Of four large plates, the pappardelle with lamb was the most extraordinary and possibly the best entree I have ever eaten. The salmon on farro was cooked and seasoned perfectly, and the mountain trout with lentils was also perfect. The steak was tender and cooked exactly as ordered. The accompanying french fries with sea salt were shoestring thin, crisp, but not overcooked The desserts were excellent, too; especially the ginger ice cream plated with a brownie and toasted marshmallow. "

  • "First time visit while staying in Ashville. Great service and food. Ordered the Scallop starter and trout entrees which were excellent. Also the indian cauliflower entree was good but tasted a little too salty for us. Would dine here again and recommend to friends."

  • "The service was spectacular. I wish I remembered the name of our server. He was fabulous. We were VERY pleased especially with there being 8 people in our party. Fast and friendly service. Split meals and individual checks. A great find!!!"

  • "The fare was varied and good. The waiter was very attentive, and the location was in a very "happening" area. Parking garage was very close. The music was soft and of great 40's and 50's tunes. A rare find these days!"

  • "I had not been to the marketplace in awhile. We ate outside on a beautiful night and our food exceeded our expectations! every dish was superb. It was one of the best gnocchi dishes I have ever had. Also had a tuna small plate that was amazing, and delicious trout over lentils. It was easy to park and nice and quiet. "

  • "We have had inconsistent experiences, mostly very good, at The Market Place. The menu is inventive, featuring fresh, local ingredients. On Saturday night, I had a pork shoulder entree that, unfortunately, was not melt-in-your mouth. Flavor was good, but it bordered on dried-out in some places. William Dissen turns out a lot of great things from his kitchen, and my dining companions were pleased with their choices. The restaurant could use a refresher on decor, as it looks dark and a little tired. But we'll go back, because it's been overall a fine dining experience."

  • "Market Place feels like a San Fransisco Bay area neighborhood favorite. The food is fresh and creative, the wine list is on point and the ambiance feels like a nice dinner out while still being comfortable in inviting. The ONLY disappointment in our experience was that 4 taps seems a bit light on selection for a establishment in the beer-minded Asheville area. If it is on the menu, get the scallops dish with fava beans and boiled peanuts- amazing use of southern flavors! "

  • "My girlfriend and I went here after a day out in Asheville and really enjoyed it. Would recommend to anyone!"

  • "The ambience was very pleasant. The prices were high for the size of the portions. I ordered trout and the skin was on it - for the price, it should have been removed and the chard was very salty. Our server was very friendly and she brought me a new plate which was much better. Salad was miniscule."

  • "The food was excellent - presentation beautiful! Fantastic service. A real treat will definitely go back again. "

  • "While the food and service were very good, the accompanying music was loud and intrusive and completely inappropriate for brunch at a nice restaurant. Indeed, the music would be inappropriate for any meal. At one point the singer was literally howling. Needless to say, this prevented conversation. Until they get rid of this performer (or any other performer), I would not return."

  • "My solo birthday dinner couldn't have been better. The staff of The Market Place were so friendly & efficient. A social mention to my server, Denise C, for her lovely demeanor. She made my dinner that much more special. "
