Diner Reviews
  • "Live music was excellent but not overpowering. Food was insightful and inventive. Service was friendly and attentive. Definitely going back."

  • "We had a group of 6 including 2 tired campers. The restaurant was nice enough to make them some simple pasta even though there is no menu. However, the food arrived very slowly and some things were forgotten. One in our party was just starting soup when everyone else was finishing up. Excellent fresh innovative choices though. Just slow and disorganized service."

  • "We have enjoyed anniversary dinners there for the last several years. Because we find the food delicious and uniquely prepared it is always a good place to go which is why we recommended it to our son and daughter in law for their tenth anniversary."

  • "Went on a Tuesday so place was pretty empty. Food was decent but considering the prices not what it should be. Ordered two glasses of $9 wine (bottles were $35 and up) and got barely 3 oz. Service was just ok, we had to get the waiters attention any time we needed something. I'd not reccomend it."

  • "the menu choices were interesting and all about farm-to-table eating; the food was wonderful and beautifully presented; my only negative is that the portion sizes, even on the large plates were too small for the prices charged"

  • "With an interesting brunch menu, a dining area with loads of natural light, and an attentive server our experience was excellent. We requested 2 dishes to split, and they arrived in half portions for each person--so nice. The cauliflower salad was a welcome change of pace and delicious. The mac and cheese was a treat."

  • "While the service was good, we left hungry. I was recommended there by a coworker who went the night before, and ordered the small plate of scallops and mussels. Scallops were $8 each and were tasty, but 2? That's after we were first brought a salad vs scallops.. Mussels were overdone and tiny. Bill was 60 dollars or so and should have been about $20 for the amount of food we had. High dollar doesn't mean high hopes.. I see why it was empty on a Saturday night."

  • "These guys know how to prepare mushrooms! Meltinyourmouth!"

  • "This is the first time we have been disappointed with the food we ordered. The mussels were not tasty or hot. Two persons ordered fried chicken which were different to say the least and skimpy. The spoonbread left something to be desired"

  • "We've walked by the Market Place so many times and finally made plans to try it, we were not disappointed. Food quality, taste and presentation was great. We tried the brunch menu, I had the eggs and smoked trout while very tasty quantity was smaller than expected. My wife had the banana bread French toast and it was delicious."

  • " Mussels were lovely, charcuterie with over the top rabbit pâté. Everyone's entre delicious but the snapper was my favorite. The Pimm's Common cocktail set the tone for a relaxed sophisticated meal."

  • "While the service was good, the food was absolutely horrible. Appetizers were extremely bad - the fish over cooked and the lamb terrible. If you are looking for good food - this is not the place. Much better restaurants in the area from a food perspective."

  • "After reading rave reviews online about The Market Place, I decided it would be perfect for the important group outing that I was planning for a customer and some colleagues. The Market Place did not let down. Every appetizer, entree and dessert was absolutely delicious. Our server was very attentive and patient. It was a great experience and I will certainly keep it in mind for future events."

  • "My husband and I have eaten at this restaurant many times, but this time we were very disappointed with our experience. We arrived at 6:45 and didn't leave until 9:45. We had drinks and shared an appetizer and then ordered our entrees. We asked for an order of bread, and when it came, there was one roll on a plate. Our waiter was not very attentive to our table (4 of us) and came by an hour or so after we had ordered our entrees and told us that because of a large group on the lower floor our food would be late arriving. (He did offer us a free salad for our wait.) When we finished our meal, he "tossed" our check onto the table."

  • "I took my VIP customer to dinner on a Monday night. Since we are both foodies, we are always trying new, top flight restaurants in the area. This definitely rates as a new favorite. Perfect for talking in a comfortable, relaxed but elegant atmosphere while enjoying inventive, fresh, cuisine with a great cross section of choices. I defy you NOT to find something you love on this menu. I had the Hand Cut Pappardelle-braised lamb, roasted oyster mushrooms, confit tomatoes, basil pesto, parmesan - and it was an artful and amazing presentation!"

  • "We enjoyed the smoked potato gnocchi (light and fluffy!) with arugala and orange salad and ham cracklins very good. There was a special Mushroom au gratin with several varieties good portion to share. Also had the togarashi seared yellowfin tuna with avocado and Asian slaw so tasty and we finished with the saffron and wildflower honey creme brulee - fragrant and delicious."

  • "Been coming here for years now, and we are never, ever disappointed. When William purchased, were hoping food would stay consistent. It's even better! The lamb we had was out of this world. Great way to celebrate a July 4th birthday (every excuse we can get to go there, of course)."

  • "We heard about this place and the chef's preference to source ingredients within a 100 mile range. A group of 7 met there for dinner on a tuesday night and were surprised to even find a live music group that night. The service was impeccable and the food was both really creative, and flavorful. Everyone in the group enjoyed it! Parking can be found in the multilevel garage closeby, and keep in mind that outdoor dining is also an option in their front patio. A true gem in Asheville!"

  • "My wife and I went here for dinner. The atmosphere is an odd blend of formal and informal. Some patrons were dressed casually although the service and menu suggests it is a slightly more upscale venue. They have a vegan entree (roasted curry cauliflower with quinoa) and several vegan appetizers. My wife had a lamb pasta dish which she greatly enjoyed. The service was excellent. Our server knew the menu very well including the wine list and made some good recommendations. I would definitely return."

  • "Shared a meal with my husband while visiting in Asheville. We composed our meal from the offering of "little plates"--we had a first course of a heirloom tomato salad, a second of a warm mushroom gratin, a third of a seared gnocchi salad, and lastly a local bison sirloin. The dessert was a saffron and honey creme brulee. All were delightful tastes to the palate. We will be back next time we are in town."

  • "Food is so perfect. Not a single complaint. The service is always wonderful, not pushy and the server gives you the freedom to take your time and enjoy being there. Everything is perfect. Scallops were cooked absolutely perfect, pork shoulder was also the best I have ever had."

  • "This dinner was without a doubt the best we have enjoyed at The Marketplace in several years. It was well prepared, attractively plated and served by a very professional server. When the chef came to the table ( as this one dis0 and asked our opinion, I regard this as the signature act of one who really cares."

  • "The house pickles were amazing. Roasted quail was perfect. Drinks were unique. The mac n cheese was light, not heavy and greasy. Overall it was a delightful experience."

  • "The Market Place had been a favorite for many years and we were pleased, after a long absence from Asheville to see it in new hands. A dinner a year ago was quite nice, but the absence of last minute reservations prevented us from going back over the last year. However, we had an unexpectedly nice farm-to-table dinner about two weeks ago planned and cooked by this chef. We vowed it would be the place to take our grandson and girl friend for his 21st--something more grand than college fare. We each had something different including salmon, and quail all of which was nicely served, but tasteless. We each commented that our dishes were fresh, the meats nicely cooked, but totally bland. It was a total disappointment. Service great"

  • "Visited here 4 wks ago with another couple. Enjoyed the food so much, asked another couple to join us a few days ago. Embarrassing. They both complained their food was dry (trout & quail dishes). I sent my lamb back after one bite. Tasted as if it had been in a refrigerator too long. Our server immediately brought me an alternate selection: carrot/goat cheese ravioli which I'd had on my last visit. It was very good. My husband ate his meal, but said it was only "so-so." We all agreed that we wouldn't be back any time soon."

  • "We were a party of four celebratiing my daughter's graduation. For the small plates, we recommend the cheese platter and the gnocchi. The cheese platter could have been an entree. The house-made gnocchi were perfect with a strongly herbed tomato sauce. Of four large plates, the pappardelle with lamb was the most extraordinary and possibly the best entree I have ever eaten. The salmon on farro was cooked and seasoned perfectly, and the mountain trout with lentils was also perfect. The steak was tender and cooked exactly as ordered. The accompanying french fries with sea salt were shoestring thin, crisp, but not overcooked The desserts were excellent, too; especially the ginger ice cream plated with a brownie and toasted marshmallow. "
