Diner Reviews
  • "Try the French Toast. You won't regret it. It's fast service, no wait with reservations. It's outstanding. "

  • "This was our first visit to The Market Place, and it won't be our last. The setting was very pleasant, and although I'm not normally a fan of live music, the small band that was playing provided lovely background music that didn't interfere with our conversation. The food was phenomenal -- we had several small plates, including the Caesar salad with Green Goddess dressing, PEI mussels, and a cheese plate. Everything was fresh, tasty, and perfectly thought out. We finished with the dulce de leche brownie with gingersnap ice cream - yummy! Our waitress was thorough without being intrusive, and the entire staff worked together. My only regret was that we haven't discovered this gem sooner. "

  • "Service and anbiance were great. Menu items even looked great. But fond was pedestrian at best and extremely over-priced for the quality. Will not return and would not reccomend to friends. Very disappointed. "

  • "Wonderful food and service but overly loud live music. The latter marred the otherwise wonderful experience. "

  • "My husband and I ate here based on the recommendation of a friend. We were impressed with the emphasis that the chef put on using local foods, from within 100 miles of the restaurant. We enjoyed a cheese plate as an appetizer and then were encouraged to order the quail, which we both did. I was worried that I would have to work at getting the meat off such a small bird, but was pleasantly surprised when my plate arrived with two quail! The meat was tender and easy to cut off the bone. Very flavorful as well. Great dinner. I also should mention that there was live music which really added to the atmosphere rather than take over. Would definitely return."

  • "The food was amazing. Fresh, farm to table with awesome flavor and presentation. Live jazz music played in the background. Great atmosphere and we were able to have a conversation too!"

  • "Fantastic food - fantastic service - lovely place for a wonderful meal!"

  • "The trick to this place is to book a reservation. I had heard that some people have been not happy with the wait. The value was very good for the experience we had here. This is truly eating for pleasure. We had the mussels, quail, bacon and brussel sprouts, Creme Brulee for dessert, with a bottle of wine. Our server was extremely receptive to the type of experience we were going for and made excellent recommendations. I have never been to a restaurant of this caliber and had staff so genuinely welcome 'novice' foodies like us with open arms. You must make reservations if you'd like a romantic dinner out in Asheville. This place creates food and an atmosphere that sends your pleasure center into overdrive!"

  • "Had brunch on their very first day serving it. It seemed as if they had been doing it for years!"

  • "We don't get to Asheville often but when we do, this is our first choice for dinner. Food is always very good and service is outstanding. Our waitress has been working there for something like 12 years and it's obvious that she really enjoys what she is doing. We have never had better service. We stopped in Asheville for two days after spending 7 days in our favorite restaurant city, Charleston, SC and this meal was as good or better than any that we had in Charleston. Trout was outstanding."

  • "The Market Place was a wonderful way to celebrate my birthday. The food could not have been better. Leo was our waiter and would ask for him again. He was helpful, very friendly and loved his Brazilian accent. 5 stars +"

  • "One of our absolute favorite places to dine when in Asheville. The food was marvelous, as always, service was great, an overall outstanding dinner!"

  • "My friends and I had a wonderful dinner here the other night - we hadn't been in years. We were not disappointed. The trout and pasta entrees were both fantastic, the room is quiet, and the service was great."

  • "The Market Place has farm to table down. Delicious and innovative.combinations. The cheese platter was outstanding and the "grey's hound" cocktail was delicious. The music was a bit loud making conversation difficult but it was still great ambience"

  • "This was the first time to this restaurant. Outstanding dishes creatively presented. Would please the most discriminating foodie! Experienced was enhanced by some of the finest service anywhere."

  • "I have never had a less than excellent experience at The Marketplace. The service is great as is the atmosphere and of course the food. I feel like it is the most underrated restaurants in Asheville. I love bringing guests here from out of town."

  • "We had a 8:15 reservation at The Market Place and no once acknowledged us until 8:45. There was no host or hostess and I finally asked the bartender how to get seated and he replied "Me, I guess." Nice bartender and nice waiter, but they did not care about our experience and seemed like an old routine to them. We are not high maintenance and enjoyed a drink at the bar, but I was unimpressed with the overall experience. The dining are in the back also seemed a bit stale. If they boosted their game and welcomed you when you walked in and were more attentive, I would recommend. The food was good, but we were starving by that point."

  • "Food was very good, but very slow to get to the table. Wait person was attentive, but a little too obsessive about placement of my silverware. Readjusted it several times throughout the meal. At one point on his way past our table and on the way in to the kitchen, he said he will be right back with our trout and pork. My wife ordered the trout and I ordered hanger steak. It was a while before we got our entrees. We ordered the apple crisp for dessert and I asked if we could get a small scoop of the ginger ice cream along with the buttermilk ice cream that came with the apple dessert; we received (3) extra scoops of the buttermilk ice cream."

  • "I took my family out for my moms birthday. There was lively music, a calm ambiance, very friendly staff, and overall the restaurant was within the top five that i have had in Asheville. The waiter said he had been there for the past six(ish) years, which only served as a signal for cohesiveness, and an over all well put together place. I cannot say enough good things about the Market Place. I am a concierge downtown, this is one of the easiest places to recommend. If you like food, it is worth the time, effort, and money, to go."

  • "tuna appetizer (small plate) was especially outstanding, especially as the kitchen was able to modify the menu offering to cook a little more to my liking! still tasting the deliciousness several days afterward! waiter was very knowledgeable and charming without being intrusive to our party of four engaged in lively conversation! lamb "stew" was balanced and substantial.. very tasty ..other 3 at our table all ordered the trout and were pleased! only less than stellar was the chocolate dessert..good, but not outstanding, little on the dry side.."

  • "We had a lovely table upstairs overlooking the bar below and windows outside. It was early as we had theater tickets. Our waiter was very friendly and when we told him we wanted to enjoy our drink and chat before we ordered he was fine with that. He knew about the menu, related information when asked, and was pleasant and attentive. We asked him if the chef was there and he said he was not. I ordered the lamb and my friend the cauliflower. We both ate everything on our plates and found that there was plenty of food. They have done away with bread so the one piece of bread is no longer an issue. I enjoyed the experience but did not experience a wow factor. Most entrees are in the 20's and cocktails 9-10."

  • "The perfect spot for a quiet and elegant dinner before taking in a show at a nearby theater. They had a nice jazz trio playing there the Friday evening when we stopped in for dinner. Our waitress, Denise, was excellent, as was the food."

  • "When in Asheville a must place to go. Great food and fashionable urban atmosphere. Service outstanding."

  • "waiter/server was a distraction from the good food. throughout the meal he confused our orders, 2 glasses of wine ordered and he appeared with two bottles and four glasses; gluten free items carefully selected and then he served salad with flour covered red onions after warning us these were not GF. Dessert order for GF party members he brought streusel with flour to the GF person who had been discussing GF throughout ordering process. A distraction but the food was delicious. On dining date we dined at 6:45 at a table for 4."

  • "was not impressed its possible william dissen wasnt there the night we went but my dadas bacon was aweoime my moms was burnt. My quail was good not great then again Im not an expert in quail. My gnochi was burnt and my dads mussels were mediocre at best. Desert was okay not great too many good restaurants in asheville to waste ur time on this place"

  • "Market Place is a perfect place to take a special friend to enjoy some of the finest cuisine Asheville has to offer. The wine and beer selections are just as spectacular as the food, and the service is unparallelled!"

  • "Wonderful night with friends celebrating a birthday. Especially enjoyed the Hanger Steak, quail, scallops, mussels. Thought the truffle fries had very little to no flavor. Excellent moderately priced wines. Noise level with DJ louder than we like making it necessary to shout at times (and we were in the rear of the restaurant away from the DJ). This is our 3rd visit to Market Place and we will go back. It's our special place for a unique meal and usually good service."

  • "The food was, as usual.quite good. The surroundings are pleasant. I had perhaps the worst martini I've ever been served. I can forgive a "short" drink, but this one had actual ice cubes in place of the olives. Nor was I alone in my displeasure; my wife overheard the people at the next table (a six top, as were we) commenting that it was too bad that with food this good they could't hire a decent bartender. I hope that this experience was just because they were crowded on Saturday night, but if this had been my first time, with all the fine dining places in Asheville, i wouldn't be going back."

  • "Great food and great ambience. My only complaint was the waiter was not very attentive. It seemed he was paying more attention to one specific table and we ended up waiting on drinks, etc. However I would not hesitate to eat at The Market Place again."

  • "This restaurant felt right from the moment we opened the door- it was. Great staff, great ambiance, great food not necessarily in that order but all the same quality level. My wife’s appetizer was the gnocchi. I had foie gras. We both had the scallops with an excellent blended Washington State wine. The foie gras and scallops- a ten out of ten. The waiter was beyond a ten-knowledgeable, friendly, attentive with a warm personality. We had the scallops due to his recommendation. We both realized we cannot think of a restaurant where the staff made us feel so welcome; then to have a dinner and setting of the same standard was wonderful. We almost did not go because of the early seating- would have been a terrible mistake on our part."

  • "After one of the best dining experiences ever last year, we returned to the Market Place during a quick trip to Asheville. Every element of the evening was extraordinary. The food was exceptional, the service attentive, and the ambience romantic. Looking forward to the next visit!"

  • "The food was absolutely delicious. The menu offered a good variety of options. We tried several small and large plates. There were six of us in our party, and everyone walked away with RAVE reviews."
    Dined on 2/8/2014
  • "The atmosphere is quite cozy, especially upstairs where we were. The food was really delicious. However, though our waiter was very nice and efficient, we had long waits between service. This was noticeable after we first sat down and then before we received our first entree. We arrived at 6:30 and did not leave until 7:45. Also, when I ordered a re-fill of my wine glass they brought the wrong white, and I don't particularly like being asked if I was "sure" when I noted that this was not the Chardonnay I had ordered. Otherwise it was a very nice pre-orchestra dinner."

  • "We visited at 5:30 during restaruant week so we could get in and out before the crowd. We were seated in a far corner next to the window although right next to a vacant table for four. I thought we would have a quiet meal because surely, with all the vacant tables, no one would be seated next to us. However, no sooner had our food come than four people were seated right next to us! What is it with hostesses? We found some of the food to be good and some not so good. The glazed bacon was mostly fat. The lamb good. Really stingly with their bread...2 slices a piece."
