Diner Reviews
  • "Walking into the Mark Hotel is a perfect lead-in to the beautiful, upscale, and vibrant cocktail lounge / bar area of The Mark Restaurant. Beautifully designed, with a hip young flair, it is eye-catching, with a modern and exciting vibe. The dishes were well composed, offering fresh ingredients and nice balance. We found portion size to be just right. We shared the beet salad with goat-cheese fondue, and cold artichoke with mustard dip, both outstanding, My veal chop, was cooked perfectly medium, and my date's Baked Maine lobster, de-shelled, with a fresh, cheesy risotto was rich, but fresh and delicious. Service was good, our attentive waiter made a point of checking in with us. We thoroughly enjoyed it & found it to be a special place."

  • "As I was dining alone, I expected to be stuck in a corner but I was shown to a wonderful seat where I could observe all the action! As always, my meal at The Mark was marvelous. The Lobster was as sweet as any I have ever had; the Oysters fresh and the wait staff attentive, aware and helpful. A special shout out to Hamid! Thank you."

  • "Great place for brunch if you want to be able to hear the conversation at the table. They have everything you could ever want for breakfast/lunch and the wait staff is top notch."

  • "First time here, for dinner before catching a late show at the Cafe Carlyle. Love the bar here, upscale feel, but comfy and laid back vibe. We got there early, so we enjoyed a leisurely cocktail and were invited to our table right on time. The food was uniformly excellent. Apps were mussels for me, beef carpaccio for my wife. Entrees were Parmesan chicken for me, fettuccine for she. We both were totally satisfied. No desserts, as we planned on doing that at the Carlyle. Service was attentive, but not at all rushed, and totally gracious and friendly. Ambiance was lovely, noise no problem, although certainly not whisper level on a busy Saturday night. Expensive? Yes. Will we go back? Yes!"

  • "I've been to this restaurant many many times and on Friday night they completely blew it. There was just shy of an hour in between receiving out salads and main dishes. Pretty sure the food wouldn't have shown up at all had we not asked. When the food was finally served my fish (hake grilled) was closer to raw versus rare (fish eaters am sure you can appreciate the difference). While the staff was very accommodating with their efforts to make up for the situation and they truly did the right thing, I'm not sure if I'll return..."

  • "A lovely dining experience...but I was a bit disappointed at the lack of creativity on the menu, at such a beautiful place with a fabulous chef..Brunch choices were really just "meh". Desserts were FAB! Service and ambience were amazing."

  • "Two of us ordered omelets: one came out lukewarm, the other was cold. The cold one was sent back. The waiter told us the chef was going to make the cold omelet again (not reheat it), but it was obviously microwaved because you could see where the original bite had been taken. The Ladies Room was not taken care of. At 1 P.M. One stall had no toilet paper. There were no towels left, and we had to use tissues. One Kleenex box was completely empty, which signified that many people before us had to use tissues also instead of towels. The garbage can was small and overflowing. It does not befit a hotel like the Mark or it's restaurant to have basic services like rest rooms unattended."

  • "Fabulous 21st celebration was had. The food was superb. The staff extremely attentive and delightful and overall a wonderful experience. Delicious. Comfortable and a real find in upper east side."

  • "Food was excellent. Service started very slow but after the initial wait and after getting the waiter's attention a couple of times, service was superb, as it should be in a top rated restaurant."

  • "The servive was great. The ambience was beautiful. The food was delicious. However the food was horribly over priced and under proportioned. I ordered the grilled lamb chops for $51! I got two! Two lamb chops!!! I came away completely hungry. Lamb chips come in a rack. Where did the rest go!"

  • "My wife and I were lucky enough to dine at two Jean-Georges restaurants in two days. We ate at the Mark and ABC Kitchen. Bottom line: go to ABC. Better service, better atmosphere, better prices. No wonder it's so much harder to get a reservation."

  • "Food was good but not worth the high price. I expected much more."

  • "The Mark is consistently a pleasure! There is not a bad seat in the house! The menu is varied...there is even a section with "simply prepared" entrees. They are flavorful and delicious but simply grilled. I can not recommend The Mark enough."

  • "The warm shrimp salad which was recommended by other diners was a very good choice . However, the service was only very average, nothing special considering that the restaurant is rather expensive. I very much enjoyed the ambience and the food and therefore, I would definitely return. The service staff could definitely learn from service people at average priced Rhode Island restaurants."

  • "The chef's blatant overuse of salt was too much for my palate, to the point of sending my salad back (the lettuce, apple and blue cheese one), which is something I rarely do. When it was brought back to me, it was still too salty but at that point I had given up. Place was elegant and a lovely place to have lunch. Too bad about the chef's overexuberance with the salt. The pizza and kale salad that my friends ordered were fine though."

  • "My husband and I have patronized the Mark regularly since it opened, food and service are still relatively good for an upper east side stalwart . But on several occasions when I've gone with a girlfriend for dinner, the experience felt discriminatory (not uncommon I am sad to say in NY restaurants in general, which is so stupid because women are better tippers and spend plenty) . Table in a dark corner, very little attention from server. Walking through the Bar-Scene-From -Star-Wars in the front makes me convinced this place is stacked with professionals and perverts."

  • "This is a Jean Georges restaurant, and one expects something elegant and "fit for foodies"; it is absolutely not! The menu is so low keyed as to be boring. The food itself is nothing unusual in flavor; it is somewhat flat in taste. We were six people with six different meals none of which deserved praise; they were simply expensively "okay". Dessert "sounded" exciting, but the taste was missing. The wine and cordials were quite good and that list complete. Service left much to be desired. For the price paid, I would never go back. There are so many more lovely restaurants in New York with far better food and service. Jean Georges should be ashamed to put his name to this establishment."

  • "We got a great table at this restaurant, I called early to tell them it was my mother's birthday. The food is great. Unfortunately service was patchy and at times inattentive. It took a lot of effort to get the waiter's attention, they did not refill our water glasses without prompting. I would go again, but do think they need to address their service gaps."

  • "Service was below expectations for a restaurant in this class, with lack of attention and waiters with a visible lack of experience"

  • "great place to meet your lady friends for lunch! I had the octopus salad, my friends had the artichoke and kale salads, respectively and we shared sides of mashed potatoes, sauteed kale and Brussel sprouts. Even if you're not a carb eater, don't pass on the homemade bread with butter. It is to die for."

  • "This is a special place. Beautiful people, food, setting and very attentive service with pleasant attitudes. It is worth the prices on every level."

  • "Cannot find any fault here. My appetizer special consisting of crudo scallop with fresh truffles was to die for. The warm shrimp and salad greens was also very good. The salmon was reported to be the best ever by two people in our party. The veal chop was also one of the best ever had by my carnivour friend and my black bass with the braised fennel was nothing short of an award winning dish. (One of the finest seafood dishes you could order.) Service was impeccable but not overbearing, which is the way it should be. Ambiance, wines, you name it..... its top shelf."

  • "Truly a memorable evening was had by myself, wife and three adult children as we enjoyed fabulous meal at Jean-Georges to celebrate my wife's birthday. It was our their time at the restaurant and it has never failed to provide us with a great experience. The ambiance is lovely, the service friendly, high quality and non - pretentious. The wait staff was very helpful, specially the wine sommelier. ll in all we'd recommend Jean-Georges highly and look forward to another celebration soon."

  • "Outstanding in every way but most unusual for NYC restaurants was the space between tables. So nice not to have other diners sitting so close you hear their conversations instead of your own. Beautiful art deco space, elegant but not stuffy. Excellent food and service. We highly recommend to anyone who appreciates fine dining."

  • "A truly bad experience at one of my favorite restaurants. Modest but special pre-arranged birthday request for my husband forgotton; staff so rushed we felt we barely had time to finish each course; loud guests; lots of people milling around complaining about tables; big mistake to go to the mark for a special occasion.."

  • "I'd only been for lunch a few times and had liked the menu and food (Croque M. in particular) so wanted to try dinner. We shared a romaine salad which was excellent and at $20, plenty for two. I had angel hair with Brussels sprouts and pesto which was very good and a glass of the Pinot Noir which was delicious! What appeals to me is the range of choices from two sizes of pasta or a hamburger to Dover Sole, plus the restaurant is comfortable even though I think the decor misses. Service was slow, but not as bad as one lunch where it was HORRENDOUS to the point of being comical. The bar is very attractive, although some of the people in it weren't, and was hopping when we left."

  • "I brought my lovely cousin and her husband of 25 years here to eat with my husband of 41 years and me and we had a very special dinner. We loved the energy and ambiance of The Mark and the service was truly superb, always there but not fawning. I would definitely recommend the restaurant and would ignore most of the negative reviews I've seen online. I've eaten all over the world and The Mark Restaurant by Jean-Georges compares with the best."

  • "The table they gave us could be the worst I've ever been given in NYC. It was right next to the bar at the waiters pick-up station. I hope we were not given that table because our reservation came through opentable."

  • "I was disappointed, first time diner. My table was in the traffic area, so I felt interrupted as other guests were escorted to their tables. So if you go here, make sure you get a decent table. Food was good, mostly traditional choices done well. Wine list was over done in variety and price. It felt like a place that old lawyers and younger wives eat. Noisy is not energetic."
