A word from The Mariner's Inn
When Bill and Betty Von Rutenberg opened The Mariner’s Inn in 1966, they set out to provide a steak and seafood dining experience like none other. Mouth watering, delicious steaks aged to perfection and an assortment of seafood from lobster to the famous Friday Fish Fry.

Bill and Betty’s sons, Bill, Jack, and Robert, along with their crew, now carry on the tradition of outstanding hospitality of von Rutenberg Ventures. Waterfront dining on the patio and a sunset over the marina make dinner at Mariner’s an evening to remember.Continued

  • "A great experience on a Friday! Mariner's continues to impress with the quality of their food. Lots of places have Friday fish fries. Few have haddock as their entree and fewer have as good a product as Mariner's Inn."

  • "This was my third time back to Mariner's in the last three months. I don't know how or why but Mariner's fell off my radar for years but when looking for a place to meet a colleague for a meeting she suggested Mariner's. We only had drinks but it brought me back to the charm of Mariner's. A few weeks later I went for dinner and had a great experience. This past Saturday we returned to for a special dinner to show and out of town Guest from Louisiana what Madison has to offer and once again the Atmosphere, Drink, Food and Service were outstanding!"

  • "This was the best steak we've had, maybe ever, in the Madison area! My Father has been in the food industry his entire career and he was thrilled with his meal & entire experience at The Mariner's Inn. We were celebrating our parents 50th wedding anniversary, and thanks to Jack and his staff it was an amazing night!"

  • "I have to say I was happy with the entire service, food and just plain hospitality. I would consider taking my beat friend their as a tray. You have a gem of a location and just the right people and atmosphere!"

  • "We went because we had a coupon to use, but forgot to use it... I think we'll probably go back again. Nice quiet atmosphere, food was better than I can do at home. It was a nice change in feel from the places with TV screens everywhere."

  • "the shrimp was good but not great, the clam chowder was wonderful."

  • "Because you have asked how our evening was, I must say that the lighting was so poor that if I had not read the menu on line, I would have been in big trouble. And when the food came I could see the steak with the crab on top but I did eat something that I was not sure what I was eating ~~ It had been years since we had been there and the lighting sure spoiled the evening, Turn up the lights abit !!!!!"

  • "I have lived in Madison for 15 years and never thought to try the Mariners Inn. This Valentines Day I was in search of a new place since our usual restaurants were booked. Luckily, we were able to get a reservation at Mariners. The food was wonderful and the service was great."

  • "Overall it was a great dining experience - very good food. Took a bit long to get the check paid- not sure why - but became a bit annoying. It was clear we were done, but it took a long time for them to pick up payment so we could leave. Other than paying the check- great dining experience and I would definitely go there again."

  • "food was pretty good, usually it is fantastic. multiple babies crying in dining room areas, waitress was awful, rude, didn't really take care of our needs. 2 of us, brought 1 roll each. asked for crispy hash browns and was told in a loud tone, no extras tonight, we are busy! i was hoping for a romantic valentines date, didn't get it. maybe not the right place for valentines, but i was thinking it would be. who takes kids out to this place on valentines?"

  • "Made a reservation for 8:30 pm. The restaurant called and asked to move our reservation back to 8:45 pm. Had to wait to be seated. The food and the service was very good. Overall a very nice evening."

  • "Service and food were outstanding! Not great beer choices & martini was not worth the price but the food more than made up for that! Would definitely recommend Mariner's to others and will come back in the summer to sit outdoors."

  • "Need to be up dated and a good cleaning . Food was fair but they were out of certain items and menu not very clear . This place is stuck in the past and trying to hold on their glory days. I would think an update will make this place a hot spot once more."

  • "First time here, based on reccomendations from this site. we were greeted promply by a very friendly host, and another who took our coats. Great so far! Then we tried to get a drink at the bar while we waiting for our reservation time and it was difficult at best. The bar area is too small and understaffed. We sat at a side table and weren't sure if there would be a waiter. There wasn't. Once we got our table the waiter was there promptly and he was helpful, really a good waiter. My wife had the tenderloin and it was perfect. I had the porterhouse and it was prepared perfect and had good flavor, although I don't remember a porterhouse being that gristly. I wouldn't order that cut again at Mariner. We liked it here and will come back again."

  • "I was very disappointed with the steak this trip to Mariners. This is an exception. But I think the chef should have been able to tell just by looking at the porterhouse that this cut was unfit to serve."

  • "Had not been to Mariner's since the late 1990's, when it was THE premier restaurant in the area and favorite summer dining spot by the lake. Our waitress was spending her time on 2 tables of 8 people, so we (table of 2) were left waiting most of the night for everything. The restaurant was not very busy otherwise, so this was either poor table management by the restaurant or by the waitress herself. When the food did come, it was lukewarm and the steak was rare (asked for medium). We ordered the tenderloin, which came as a thin piece of meat. We were expecting the traditional tenderloin cut. The red wine was cold, which we found odd. The appetizers (seafood stuffed mushrooms) and hash browns were good, however."

  • "I have been to the Mariners Inn before and I always have a great time. I enjoy the lounge area to get a drink while we wait for our table. I like the candle light, it's very romantic. When it is the summer it has a great view of the lake. The resturant week was an amazing deal! There was so much food and the price was awesome! The size of the portions were very generous. I always enjoy the melted butter with a candle to keep it warm through out your meal. The only thing I was a little disappointed about was the salad was kind of warm and wilted. I understand that to accomodate that many people you need to make things in advance but it was not as good as it should of been. Overall I had a wonderful time and would recommed it to every one!"

  • "Dinner was pretty good. I was disappointed in the 12 oz Rib eye steak. It was very chewy and not very tender at all. The clam chowder was excellent and so was the chocolate cake."

  • "We tend to go to Mariners for special occasions and restaurant week. Love the surf and turf meal and the specialty salad (with dried cherries, bleu cheese and sugar coated pecans). Steaks are cooked perfectly. One of my favorite things about this restaurant is the warm cozy setting indoors and being outside by the water in the summertime."

  • "We went during Restaurant Week which might explain our displeasure. We were expecting the food options/portions to be better. They didn't even offer sides (potato of veggie) with their three options. All that I received was a piece of steak, while my wife received a piece of salmon. That's it...nothing else was on the plate. Service was about what I expected during Restaurant Week, they were extremely busy running around to their tables. Which didn't really allow for them to notice when we needed refills, or anything else. I made reservations (obviously since I'm leaving this review) for 7:30 but we didn't get seated until 8:00, again due to it being Restaurant Week."

  • "I realize this was restaurant week, but if they allow for you to buy potatoes, then they should allow for you to buy mushrooms. No mushrooms allowed during restaurant week. Didn't like that. They should of told us the potatoe was not part of the dinner for $25. I thought it was. I could of done without it. The steak was not even close to being good. It was tough and chewy. Will not be having that again. I love eating here, but usually get the tenderloin and it melts in your mouth. The steak they served was not good. All the other food was fabulous."

  • "Overall great experience. We went with a party of four. Seated within a minute of our reservation. Despite the crowd, in part due to restaurant week, service was excellent. Food was very tasty and there was no pressure to leave. Definitely a place to return to."

  • "We chose the Mariner's inn for our belated New Year's girls night out. The food was good and the dining room comfortable. Twinkle lights and a fire place. But our waiter was brusque and impatient with us, made me feel like he was doing us a favor by waiting on us. I could have done without the attitude. But he did get our orders correct and split our bill correctly. His tip was slighly less than 15% as a result. The host/hostess was friendly and did not chastize us when half of our party was almost 15 minutes late for our reservation. I have dined here twice before and the waitstaff was quite fine. Good steaks and the seafood was cooked well, not over done or dry."

  • "We went to Mariner's for Restaurant Week. Neither my bfor I had been there before. We had to wait up front - in the cold entryway - to be greeted and seated. The host was MIA for more than 5 minutes. The coatroom is in total shambles - what a mess! Boxes spilling out, old decorations strewn about. Not a particularly nice or welcoming place to leave our coats. Things didn't get better when we were seated. Though the server was pleasant, she certainly didn't check back in with us frequently, and acted rushed even though the dining room was empty. The food was fine, nothing great, and my bf's steak and lobster were both overcooked. It ended up being an $83 dinner which is a lot for us. Such a pretty place but so disappointing."
