A word from The Marine Room
For generations of San Diegans, the “Seahorse” symbol of The Marine Room has long stood for its dramatic on-the-surf location and award-winning cuisine by Executive Chef Bernard Guillas and Chef de Cuisine Ron Oliver. Considering this rare blend of culinary excellence, uncompromising service and beachfront setting, it’s no wonder The Marine Room has become a true San Diego landmark. Simply stated, this is fine dining at its finest. Opened in 1941, The Marine Room quickly became famous as pounding surf created dramatic displays against the restaurant's windows. For more than half a century, celebrities, world figures, residents, and visitors have made it a habit to enjoy the spectacular panoramic views of the Pacific and exceptional cuisine. We invite you to San Diego's premier dining destination and experience how each tide brings something new to The Marine Room. You’re not reserving a table – you’re joining a 70-year tradition. Diner Reviews
  • "We went here a few days ago for a birthday. The place is nice and the service is attentive. The quality of the product is very high and the chef is inventive and daring. We had a complimentary surprise dessert for my husband, which was a delicate unexpected attention. Unfortunately we live in France and won't have the opportunity to visit again, but I highly recommend the place. Come at 7 PM if you don't want to miss the sunset (what we did!)"

  • "I have never had anything less than a wonderful meal, but very very pricey. Great view watching people frolic in the waves and other diners are usually quite friendly. Great for casual all the way up to very fancy fit in to the ambiance. Waiters are a touch formal, but we did receive excellent service."

  • "Found the Marine Room based on a suggestion for our visit to San Diego. We came for the sunset over the Pacific, but would return for the excellent food and service. The crab cake and salmon were exceptional. Our server, Hector, who had 30 years on the job, was engaging, enjoyable, and made the whole experience something to remember."

  • "Great food, good service, great ambiance. Only issues are: its a bit hot and stuffy inside (need more air conditioning). Also my wife thinks they gave her caffeinated coffee with dessert vs. decaf. Otherwise it was a great experience."

  • "We went to the Marine Room for our anniversary last week. The evening was perfect. Great service, beautiful setting and most important, incredible food. Everything on our plates was fabulous. True, it's pricey, but well worth every penny. My husband had the shortribs and prawns, which were almost painfully delicious. I had the filet mignon, prepared exactly as I asked. I don't recall having ever had a better meal. The Marine Room will be our go-to for future anniversaries."

  • "It had been a while since we had been to the Marine Room so we booked for our wedding anniversary for fun and got all dressed up. Other than the staff, we were way over dressed. I realize it is La Jolla in the summer time and tourists will wear whatever, but baseball caps, shorts and flip-flops? Young children in the main dining area? Very disappointing."

  • "Superb view, great food, amazing desserts. Perfect for celebration, and if timed right you get to see the ocean in daylight+sunset and then the waves hitting the restaurant windows, experience enhanced by the outdoor and indoor lighting."

  • "Great place for a romantic dinner. Five star taste and presentation. Quality beef and fish cooked to perfection. Air temp inside could have been dropped a few degrees. Had to ask for extra bread two times. I would recommend this restaurant for a full experience knowing quality comes with a price but not over the top."

  • "food was delicious, viea is amazing, my better half and I went for our 1yr anniversary here and I must say it was perfect!!! the view of the ocean waves crashing against the windows, the food was amazing we had the chefs special the filet mignion and the lobster tail amazing i highly recommend, for dessert we split this coffee, ice cream cake with a caramel topping which was phenomenal. my only grip was out waiter seemed to be rushing us and wasn't real friendly at first till it was dessert time. but other then that everything was great."

  • "We enjoyed a great evening Sat. We discovered The Marine Room 30 years ago when we were in LaJolla for our honeymoon. We live in Tucson, AZ and had been back once or twice when visiting the area. My husband turned 60 on Sat. and I thought what a special dinner the Marine Room would be to celebrate. We invited Tucson friends and the 4 of us spent a 3 hour special evening. Waiter was Danny and he was great. Special dessert came at end which we shared and enjoyed. We all enjoyed our meals and wine. View was spectacular!"

  • "The Marine Room is always a great place for any occasion. The food is top quality and presentation beautiful. Everything as always was above and beyond and it was high tide dinner night with the waves splashing onto to glass windows. A gorgeous sunset and a wonderful meal. everything you would expect at this institution of find dining."

  • "very disappointed in service level (e.g., water refills, offer for more wine, slow order taking, food delivery, and bill presentation0, not what we expected for a a $330+ dining experience"

  • "The Marine Room is a very special restaurant, with gorgeous gourmet food, top-notch service and ambience out the wazoo. I envy those of you that live in San Diego county that have such a gem in your backyard. Plan ahead, book an early table and celebrate your next special occasion at The Marine Room...our experience there was a dinner we will never, ever, ever forget. Heaven."

  • "Food was well prepared and done in a timely manner -- and delicious! Proposed to my girlfriend here at sunset and it was wonderful. One must save up for this dining experience because it is costly, but worth it for a once in a blue moon experience."

  • "This is a lovely spot, but a bit stuffy...literally and figuratively. The view of the water is amazing, but because the room is right on the water's edge, the windows are sealed...and at sunset, the room is very, very bright and a bit hot. One could feel a bit claustrophobic! The food overall was very good, although the caesar salad was way, way too garlicky---and the table-side preparation was a non-event, as it took place across the room. And the salads arrived while we were still eating our appetizer course. Finally, skip having a gin and tonic. The tonic is a really unpleasant, poorly blended gun version which spoiled the flavor of the gin."

  • "Diverse menu; good specials, but needed to ask for the Lobster special menu I found on the web site - it was not offered. Great waiter. The food came very slowly and one dinner went back as it was served cold. The lobster appeared to have sat a while too and was not really hot, but was not sent back. Big delay in getting the dessert order in; big delay in getting our bill - had to ask for it. It's possible the restaurant was highly understaffed during our visit. The management should be embarrassed that the service and food delivery times were not commensurate with the restaurants reputation or premium pricing."

  • "With a restaurant perched right on the beach, you know that the views are going to be spectacular and the food will probably be good. The true gems are the ones where the food is world-class to go along with the views. The service and the atmosphere were great, and the entire evening, at which we were celebrating our anniversary, was an evening we will long remember. Love this place!"

  • "Valet service was very friendly and reasonable at $5. We had requested a table by the windows which wasn't honored (I understand it's not guaranteed, but a couple left their table 15 min after we sat down, the hostess could've just told us a table is available shortly if we wanted to wait). Service was a little slow initially, we wanted a long time to get to order appetizers, etc. We didn't get the impression that he was very knowledgeable, but still overall pretty good, very friendly, especially towards the second part of the dinner. We ordered the caesar salad, but it wasn't very good, way too much dressing and room-temperature (I prefer salads to be a little chilled, seems fresher). The mushroom casserole and main courses were amazing."

  • "Made my reservation 2 months early for an 80th Birthday dinner for 2. Requested a window seat at 7 pm. We arrived 1 hour & 30 min early for bar drinks and appetizers with 3 others joining us for drinks before dinner. The restaurant was very warm and uncomfortable. I asked to be informed when a window seat was available when it got closer to 7pm. About 10 min later (~5:45pm) hostess said they were down to their last window table and sat all 5 of us behind the hostess stand next to the menu stack! Then informed us we could not get the bar menu/happy hour now that we were in the "Dining Room"! At about 7pm another party with a res came in and were sat at a window table no problem! Wait service was slow. Food was good, not special."

  • "I ordered a cocktail I had never tried before. When the waiter asked how it was I told him honestly that, while It wasn't bad, it wasn't to my taste. He immediately offered to replace it with another choice. I decided to finish it to see if it got better, which it did. But I was very impressed at his immediate, unsolicited offer to replace the drink."

  • "Ordered the lobster tail, filet mignon, and scallops. Everything tasted amazing yet was pricey but that's what's to be expected of fancy restaurants like this. Had great service and an amazing ocean view and high tide. Would definitely recommend for special occasions!"

  • "It is so unusual in San Diego to find a restaurant that endures for years. It is even harder to find one that improves year over year. The Marine Room does just that. The menu evolves to changing tastes and uses fresh seasonal ingredients in ways that delight and impress. High tide dinners are a must - the beauty of the waves combined with the quality of the food takes dining to another level."

  • "We were visiting the area and the Marine Room was recommended by friends. The food and service were all first rate. The view was one step beyond amazing, it was unforgettable. We will visit every time we are in the San Diego area."

  • "We started at the bar where the bartender was very friendly and made great drinks. While we waited for our table we sat in the lounge where we enjoyed a beautiful view of the ocean. While in the lounge, we actually got to meet the head chef Bernard, who was very welcoming. He actually mingled throughout the evening which was very cool. During dinner we could see the waves crash against the glass and we saw a beautiful sunset. All of this while eating some outstanding food. The scallops and the lobster were great highlights to an amazing dining experience. We left very satisfied and with a signed copy of the Chef Bernards' cookbook. We can't wait to visit the Marine Room again!"

  • "This experience was somewhat a disappointment. The wine pairing had less than a third of a glass of wine which for the price and the type of wines was unacceptable. Also, it was disappointing that patrons in beach attire with a baby carriage were allowed on a Saturday evening."

  • "A great all around experience at The Marine Room. Service was outstanding, food was delicious and beautifully presented. We timed our visit to be dining at sunset and the view of the ocean can't be beat. Highly recommend this restaurant."
