A word from The Marine Room
For generations of San Diegans, the “Seahorse” symbol of The Marine Room has long stood for its dramatic on-the-surf location and award-winning cuisine by Executive Chef Bernard Guillas and Chef de Cuisine Ron Oliver. Considering this rare blend of culinary excellence, uncompromising service and beachfront setting, it’s no wonder The Marine Room has become a true San Diego landmark. Simply stated, this is fine dining at its finest. Opened in 1941, The Marine Room quickly became famous as pounding surf created dramatic displays against the restaurant's windows. For more than half a century, celebrities, world figures, residents, and visitors have made it a habit to enjoy the spectacular panoramic views of the Pacific and exceptional cuisine. We invite you to San Diego's premier dining destination and experience how each tide brings something new to The Marine Room. You’re not reserving a table – you’re joining a 70-year tradition. Diner Reviews
  • "The food and the atmosphere are excellent. The view can not get ant better. Unfortunately, the service was fair to poor, but the food made up for the service. I would go back for the food and view."

  • "One of the best meals I've had in ages. The view is impeccable, food great, wine list respectable. All in all a great surprise."

  • "Our server's knowledge of the food, her relaxed friendly attention made a fabulousness gastronomic experience even better! I hope the owners of this incredible restaurant know what a gem they have in this woman! We loved the diversity and combinations of flavors, textures and presentations of each dish. It ranks with some of the best food experiences ever!"

  • "Expensive but we'll worth it. Took a first date here and swept her off her feet. The view is awesome and the food and wine were excellent."

  • "My wife and I celebrated our one year wedding anniversary and the ambiance was terrific. The staff first rate and we appreciated a complimentary blood orange hibiscus tart. We loved the sunset, sea lions and seagulls. The chicken was a bit bland for such a high class restaurant , my wife liked her steak."

  • "It was our 16th anniversary and I was looking for a romantic spot and The Marine Room was the perfect place. I requested a window table on my reservation and was pleasantly surprised to get one! A wonderful view of the ocean with impeccable service and outstanding food."

  • "Even though my daughter and I didn't understand lots of the items on the menu regarding sauces and extras, we knew to trust the chef. And, we were not disappointed. The flavors were the best! The tastes - wow - starting with what could have been just a simple crab cake and turned into wanting to literally lick the plate. The help was also amazing. Our waiter was wonderful with helping us make some little decisions regarding our food. The only thing that didn't interest us was the apple pate that appeared as a compliment from our waiter regarding my daughter's birthday. Not worth the trouble but an interesting concept. Last time here was my daughter's mother/daughter graduation dinner from USD in 2000. Way too long in between! Thank You!"

  • "We brought my father who was visiting from the east coast here for dinner. We knew he would love it, and it did not disappoint. The service and food were impeccable, and the view of the waves and the rising tide at sunset was spectacular. The chef always does an amazing job - each of our dishes were presented beautifully and absolutely delicious. This is our go-to restaurant for a special occasion. It is pricey, but well worth it!"

  • "Having been to the Marine Room once before several years ago, I happily anticipated bringing my husband there for his birthday. I made the reservations several weeks in advance and requested a room near the windows so that he too could experience the ocean experience. When we arrived at our reservation time, our table wasn't ready and when we were finally seated, it was as far from the windows as possible in a room that was very noisy and where we had no view whatsoever. The hostess hastily told me that they never guarantee a window seat and this was our table period. The food and service was adequate but we had traveled cross county for a special experience, not just adequate food. It was disappointing and we will not return."

  • "The presentation and taste of each dish was fantastic! Our server was the ultimate and could not have done a better job! We will all be back ASAP!!!!"

  • "I'm afraid the Marine Room is going downhill compared to one year ago. I think the problem is where you sit. Coming down the stairway, if you sit to the right - you are in the main room with terrific ambience. However, if you are guided left, you are in what equates to conference style rooms with little ambience or warmth. At a restaurant like this, I discovered it makes all the difference in the world. The restaurant needs a major remodel. It's a shame because the food is indeed excellent - but somehow the place does not thrill me as it did on many previous visits."

  • "This is a very nice location right on the ocean. The service the night we were there was very good and attentive. Unfortunately, it felt like the food was prepared by chef assistants and that it would have been hard to believe the actually chef was there. Just mediocre on the food. I don't think we would return. The prices are too high for the quality presented."

  • "It was a really lovely restaurant the service was good, and the food presentation was very very good. But the air conditioning was very high. Most of the women in the restaurant were wearing jackets over their formal wear. We were also disappointed that we had called ahead for a window seat, but when we arrived, we were put in a booth in the back."

  • "High Tide Brunch was a fun experience. We requested a window table to get the best view at our High Tide Brunch, and we got an amazing table for two. The brunch had an great desert selection, cheese selection, and pretty good pastries. I didn't love some of the other brunch foods that I chose, and wish I would've tried their Omelette Station. I ordered a Mimosa, which ended up being $12... it was a good mimosa but not that good. Overall the food was ok/good, the view was great, and the service was great."

  • "We took our son for the last High Tide breakfast and it did not disappoint! One place we think everyone should visit and one of our favorites. The food is delicious and the service impeccable. Chef Bernard Guillas, a classy gentleman, stopped by our table to chat."

  • "High tide brunch was as special as ever. Waves crashing into the windows, delicious food, excellent ambience."

  • "The high tide breakfast on a stormy Sunday morning was an absolute hit with us and our out of town guests. Waves actually crashed on the glass and shook the floor! And the food was fabulous. Go early, 9:00, when it isn't as crowded. A great experience. Will be back for dinner sometime soon."
    Dined on 3/2/2014
  • "High-Tide Breakfast. Wonderful food from Chef Guillas, even the buffett. The waves were crashing away - spectacular. My only problem, and this has happened almost every time we have gone, very poor customer service/negative attitude from the hostesses. This time my fiance and I brought my mother, who was visiting from NY. She is handicapped, but the hostess almost seemed to be as deliberately unhelpful as possible. The hostess was so unprofessional, that I was close to leaving - but our waiter, who saw what had happened, was fantastic - thank you Esteban! Superb service! We have had several different issues with seating/our reservations on different visits, but the view and the food have (so far) continued to bring us back."

  • "I took my husband here for a belated Valentine's gift. We are both early risers so the 7:30 AM reservation was perfect for us. We were treated well from beginning to end by the friendly and capable wait staff. Both Irma and Kayla made sure that our needs were met and were both warm and professional. We loved being able to graze on the delicious breakfast items such as smoked salmon, caviar, fabulous omelets, delicious heirloom bacon, a variety of pastries, a yummy cheese and fruit plate- really, all the food items were excellent. Oh, yes- and waves crashing on the windows, beautiful views, great ambiance. We will definitely be back and will bring friends!"

  • "The brunch itself is just fine. No seafood, well prepared but mostly not exciting or imaginitive. But you go for the gorgeous waves crashing in - stellar! By the way, for the price, note that champagne/mimosa is not included in the price ($35+tip), is not bottomless, and is expensive. A bit of a rip off."

  • "My wife, my mother, and I, love to visit the Marine Room for the annual High Tide Brunch...Bernard and his wonderful staff always astound us...this year was no exception. From the moment we arrived everything was first class. We look forward to next year! Merci Beaucoup!"

  • "My husband I went to The Marine Room for our Anniversary. The food was almost ok. We sat in the bar to wait for our reservation and had a couple drinks, the bartenders only asked how we were doing once, keep in mind that we were the only two at the bar. Once we were seated we ordered. We ended up waiting an hour & a half for our entrees. By the time we left we were tired from waiting on our table,& entrees. We were at the restaurant for 3 hours, spent over 200 on our dinner, which would have been fine if it was a great experience. I give the food a 5 out of 10, the service from the bartenders & host a 6, our waitress an 8, the wait time a 2, overall experience a 5.5. We flew in from Vegas just to dine at The Marine Room, I was disappointed"

  • "We decided to go to the Marine Room for a belated Valentines Dinner. Since we knew the Marine Room was know for it's romantic setting and excellent food. However, this was the wrong decision on our end. The overall experience we had here was a waiter who provided horrible service and food that was only mediocre at best and definitely not worth the price you pay. My husband and I spent over $240 at in food and drinks which was a pure waste of our money. Overall, this was the worst service I have ever had at a restaurant of this caliber and I have been to them all in San Diego (Morten’s, Fleming’s, Eddie V’s, The Chart House, etc.). We will never be returning to the Marine Room."

  • "It was a super-busy holiday weekend night, but the food was as enjoyable as the view, to my surprise. Everything from beef cheek stew to scallops to lobster tail to steak were great. Even the special prix fixe selection did not feel like they were coming out of an assembly machine. In fact, we did feel rushed at all for the entire evening. I wasn't presented with the wine list but the selection made for me was excellent no less. Only blemish may be the smoked oyster appetizer but peeling off the excessive spinach to the side did the trick. Alas, the tide wasn't high, but still beautiful facing the setting sun. It certainly was is cheap, but still recommendable for special occasions."

  • "At the Marine Room, you pay for the scenic view of the Pacific ocean and to see the water crashing on the restaurant windows at high tide. Service is excellent and very attentive. The food is good, but not great, as I would have expected for the price paid."

  • "This is the perfect place for a delicious romantic dinner. We didn't want the evening to end--bottle of a reasonable priced wine, appetizers, salads, main courses, and dessert. Everything was delicious. All the people working at The Marine room were wonderful."

  • "We went to the Marine Room for our Valentine's dinner. Exceptional service, food, cocktails & views. Making this our Valentine's tradition!"

  • "Marine Room has got to have one of the best restaurant views in San Diego. Fortunately, they have a very delicious menu to go along with the the view. The filet mignon is very tender and the lobster tail is naturally buttery. The truffle potatoes are also a nice whimsical play on truffle fries. However, service still leaves something to be desired as we waited 10 minutes for our Coke and another 15 minutes for our desert. Also, don't forget valet is an extra $5."

  • "The restaurant is right on the beach and has huge windows floor to ceiling to admire that view... great for sunsets. The food was delicious but pricey as you would expect at a restaurant like this. The bread was served as slices from a larger loaf and each person was served two slices. Seemed different from other upscale restaurants which provide a basket of bread on the table for diners to serve themselves. Portions were adequate, nice flavors, good presentation. Desserts were rich and the coffee fresh brewed. Our server was not hovering but also was not particularly enthused. As more people arrived the noise level really got to be a hindrance to conversation with my wife. I would save this for a special occasion."
