A word from The Marine Room
For generations of San Diegans, the “Seahorse” symbol of The Marine Room has long stood for its dramatic on-the-surf location and award-winning cuisine by Executive Chef Bernard Guillas and Chef de Cuisine Ron Oliver. Considering this rare blend of culinary excellence, uncompromising service and beachfront setting, it’s no wonder The Marine Room has become a true San Diego landmark. Simply stated, this is fine dining at its finest. Opened in 1941, The Marine Room quickly became famous as pounding surf created dramatic displays against the restaurant's windows. For more than half a century, celebrities, world figures, residents, and visitors have made it a habit to enjoy the spectacular panoramic views of the Pacific and exceptional cuisine. We invite you to San Diego's premier dining destination and experience how each tide brings something new to The Marine Room. You’re not reserving a table – you’re joining a 70-year tradition. Diner Reviews
  • "Outstanding for food, service, view, overall experience. Best blintzes ever had. A special occasion treat. "

  • "Our family (2 adults, 2 teenagers) made our reservations on Saturday for Easter brunch. Our reservation was scheduled for 3:30pm and the brunch was scheduled to end at 4:00, so we were concerned that not all of the wonderful items listed on the menu would be available. Our fears were put to rest when we arrived, and we were able to enjoy all of the delicious creations. As others have commented, the view of La Jolla Cove is fabulous and the service was very good. There was a moment of confusion regarding the brunch "rules" which keeps me from giving the service an excellent rating, but the servers were otherwise very attentive and professional. The ambience/music struck the right mood for the afternoon. All in all, a great outing!"

  • "Great food, best view in la Jolla, superb staff. Always a favorite. Literally can't go wrong"

  • "It's nice when an old-school restaurant upgrades itself to compete with the finest of eateries but still remembers from whence it came. Sitting on a beautiful beach with crystal-clear windows, The Marine Room welcomes all comers with an upbeat, kid-family staff, great drinks, food and wine list. Not the least expensive spot in town, but then you wouldn't expect it. You would expect great service, super food and a good time, professionally delivered from bus-staff, wait-staff, wine-staff, the greeters and of course - the kitchen! Never a disappointment, whether two of us or a whole family!"

  • "Very great experience! So happy with the table they gave us. Kimberly was awesome. Can't wait to dine during high tide :)"

  • "Great view, mediocre food for the price. Filet was fair at best, lobster was just ok, rack of lamb was pedestrian in the land of cool cars. The service was good and the view was spectacular, go at high tide or don't go at all. "

  • "Having dined here more than once I would love to go again. The atmosphere sends this restaurant over the edge. We love to dine here and watch the waves roll in, especially when you sight a seal or birds in the water. The food is delicious. My complaint concerning the service would be on the picky side I suppose. When we arrived on time if not moments before our reservation we had to wait nearly ten minutes to be greeted or seated. It seemed the hostess had stepped away to eat her own dinner but seemed poor planning knowing there was a reservation coming in. Once seated, on both occasions I have not complaints as the wait staff is very attentive and helpful. "

  • "We typically look dine at restaurants with a great wine list and exceptional food and we were not disappointed at the Marine Room. Not only were the Wine and Food great but the view of the water and the lights on waves as the night fell made for an increasingly enjoyable evening. The Wine list is exceptional including a large selection of Bond unmatched anywhere. The tartare, oysters, filet, and lamb were all wonderful. We enjoyed dinner so much that we moved to the bar area to enjoy the evening a bit more."

  • "Nice restaurant, good food and service. Disappointed that they didn't grant my request for a table at the window."

  • "Food is elegantly prepared, with subtle and delicate sauces and tastes, and beautiful preparation. When a problem arose with an entree, it was unquestioned, replaced in toto, and then completely comped, as would be expected from any first class restaurant. In addition, the birthday bonus for a friend was also complimentary. "

  • "The food and the atmosphere are excellent. The view can not get ant better. Unfortunately, the service was fair to poor, but the food made up for the service. I would go back for the food and view."

  • "One of the best meals I've had in ages. The view is impeccable, food great, wine list respectable. All in all a great surprise."

  • "Our server's knowledge of the food, her relaxed friendly attention made a fabulousness gastronomic experience even better! I hope the owners of this incredible restaurant know what a gem they have in this woman! We loved the diversity and combinations of flavors, textures and presentations of each dish. It ranks with some of the best food experiences ever!"

  • "Expensive but we'll worth it. Took a first date here and swept her off her feet. The view is awesome and the food and wine were excellent."

  • "My wife and I celebrated our one year wedding anniversary and the ambiance was terrific. The staff first rate and we appreciated a complimentary blood orange hibiscus tart. We loved the sunset, sea lions and seagulls. The chicken was a bit bland for such a high class restaurant , my wife liked her steak."

  • "It was our 16th anniversary and I was looking for a romantic spot and The Marine Room was the perfect place. I requested a window table on my reservation and was pleasantly surprised to get one! A wonderful view of the ocean with impeccable service and outstanding food."

  • "Even though my daughter and I didn't understand lots of the items on the menu regarding sauces and extras, we knew to trust the chef. And, we were not disappointed. The flavors were the best! The tastes - wow - starting with what could have been just a simple crab cake and turned into wanting to literally lick the plate. The help was also amazing. Our waiter was wonderful with helping us make some little decisions regarding our food. The only thing that didn't interest us was the apple pate that appeared as a compliment from our waiter regarding my daughter's birthday. Not worth the trouble but an interesting concept. Last time here was my daughter's mother/daughter graduation dinner from USD in 2000. Way too long in between! Thank You!"

  • "We brought my father who was visiting from the east coast here for dinner. We knew he would love it, and it did not disappoint. The service and food were impeccable, and the view of the waves and the rising tide at sunset was spectacular. The chef always does an amazing job - each of our dishes were presented beautifully and absolutely delicious. This is our go-to restaurant for a special occasion. It is pricey, but well worth it!"

  • "Having been to the Marine Room once before several years ago, I happily anticipated bringing my husband there for his birthday. I made the reservations several weeks in advance and requested a room near the windows so that he too could experience the ocean experience. When we arrived at our reservation time, our table wasn't ready and when we were finally seated, it was as far from the windows as possible in a room that was very noisy and where we had no view whatsoever. The hostess hastily told me that they never guarantee a window seat and this was our table period. The food and service was adequate but we had traveled cross county for a special experience, not just adequate food. It was disappointing and we will not return."

  • "The presentation and taste of each dish was fantastic! Our server was the ultimate and could not have done a better job! We will all be back ASAP!!!!"

  • "I'm afraid the Marine Room is going downhill compared to one year ago. I think the problem is where you sit. Coming down the stairway, if you sit to the right - you are in the main room with terrific ambience. However, if you are guided left, you are in what equates to conference style rooms with little ambience or warmth. At a restaurant like this, I discovered it makes all the difference in the world. The restaurant needs a major remodel. It's a shame because the food is indeed excellent - but somehow the place does not thrill me as it did on many previous visits."

  • "This is a very nice location right on the ocean. The service the night we were there was very good and attentive. Unfortunately, it felt like the food was prepared by chef assistants and that it would have been hard to believe the actually chef was there. Just mediocre on the food. I don't think we would return. The prices are too high for the quality presented."

  • "It was a really lovely restaurant the service was good, and the food presentation was very very good. But the air conditioning was very high. Most of the women in the restaurant were wearing jackets over their formal wear. We were also disappointed that we had called ahead for a window seat, but when we arrived, we were put in a booth in the back."

  • "The Marine room is always our choice for very special occasions. The food is incredible, the service impeccable and the view- it's the Pacific at its best!"

  • "High Tide Brunch was a fun experience. We requested a window table to get the best view at our High Tide Brunch, and we got an amazing table for two. The brunch had an great desert selection, cheese selection, and pretty good pastries. I didn't love some of the other brunch foods that I chose, and wish I would've tried their Omelette Station. I ordered a Mimosa, which ended up being $12... it was a good mimosa but not that good. Overall the food was ok/good, the view was great, and the service was great."

  • "We took our son for the last High Tide breakfast and it did not disappoint! One place we think everyone should visit and one of our favorites. The food is delicious and the service impeccable. Chef Bernard Guillas, a classy gentleman, stopped by our table to chat."

  • "High tide brunch was as special as ever. Waves crashing into the windows, delicious food, excellent ambience."
    Dined on 3/2/2014
  • "The high tide breakfast on a stormy Sunday morning was an absolute hit with us and our out of town guests. Waves actually crashed on the glass and shook the floor! And the food was fabulous. Go early, 9:00, when it isn't as crowded. A great experience. Will be back for dinner sometime soon."
    Dined on 3/2/2014
  • "High-Tide Breakfast. Wonderful food from Chef Guillas, even the buffett. The waves were crashing away - spectacular. My only problem, and this has happened almost every time we have gone, very poor customer service/negative attitude from the hostesses. This time my fiance and I brought my mother, who was visiting from NY. She is handicapped, but the hostess almost seemed to be as deliberately unhelpful as possible. The hostess was so unprofessional, that I was close to leaving - but our waiter, who saw what had happened, was fantastic - thank you Esteban! Superb service! We have had several different issues with seating/our reservations on different visits, but the view and the food have (so far) continued to bring us back."

  • "I took my husband here for a belated Valentine's gift. We are both early risers so the 7:30 AM reservation was perfect for us. We were treated well from beginning to end by the friendly and capable wait staff. Both Irma and Kayla made sure that our needs were met and were both warm and professional. We loved being able to graze on the delicious breakfast items such as smoked salmon, caviar, fabulous omelets, delicious heirloom bacon, a variety of pastries, a yummy cheese and fruit plate- really, all the food items were excellent. Oh, yes- and waves crashing on the windows, beautiful views, great ambiance. We will definitely be back and will bring friends!"

  • "The brunch itself is just fine. No seafood, well prepared but mostly not exciting or imaginitive. But you go for the gorgeous waves crashing in - stellar! By the way, for the price, note that champagne/mimosa is not included in the price ($35+tip), is not bottomless, and is expensive. A bit of a rip off."
