A word from The Marine Room
For generations of San Diegans, the “Seahorse” symbol of The Marine Room has long stood for its dramatic on-the-surf location and award-winning cuisine by Executive Chef Bernard Guillas and Chef de Cuisine Ron Oliver. Considering this rare blend of culinary excellence, uncompromising service and beachfront setting, it’s no wonder The Marine Room has become a true San Diego landmark. Simply stated, this is fine dining at its finest. Opened in 1941, The Marine Room quickly became famous as pounding surf created dramatic displays against the restaurant's windows. For more than half a century, celebrities, world figures, residents, and visitors have made it a habit to enjoy the spectacular panoramic views of the Pacific and exceptional cuisine. We invite you to San Diego's premier dining destination and experience how each tide brings something new to The Marine Room. You’re not reserving a table – you’re joining a 70-year tradition. • "I proposed to my wife here. We come here every year on our anniversary. Very special!"

  • "This restaurant was a great way to celebrate our anniversary, seems to be popular for special occasions. We were there July 8th, near high tide. Unique to watch the waves hit the windows in front of you. Food was delicious, great service, unique atmosphere with the waves... however, very basic and dated decor. Dont expect a trendy restaurant, however we are still glad to have experienced it."

  • "Was hoping to make this restaurant our go to place for date night as we live in La Jolla but our dinner just wasn't impressive. After we finished our appetizer it took about 30-40 min to get the main course and my lobster wasn't cooked properly. We had to ask to have our drinks refilled which seemed really odd for a place where waiters are wearing suits. The dessert was fabulous and our view for the fireworks but overall the hubby wasn't impressed..."

  • "We have been coming here for special occasions and have always loved everything about the Marine Room- except this. Children. Not just multiple kids after bedtime, but loud, screaming children whose parents were more concerned with drinking then consideration of others. This is NOT a kid friendly restaurant! Please, get a babysitter if you can't keep your two years olds quiet. We were very disappointed that no one made any attempt to lower the noise level and make it pleasant for the other patrons. Had it not been for this, everything else was perfect. It was enough to spoil a romantic evening."

  • "I dined at the Marine Room as a special treat for my wife as it was her birthday. The location with the beach and sea view as well as the dining experience was par excellent. The menu had many great choices along with a very superb wine list. The service and the friendliness of the staff made the entire experience most memorable. My wife told me afterward that she wants to come here again and again. This restaurant is one of those that once you have experienced it; you will never forget it and look forward to coming back."

  • "Very good food, excellent service. But a bit overpriced. Excellent view of the ocean - close up!"

  • "Food was well-prepared and the presentation was very nice. Service was excellent. Awesome view of the Pacific. Somewhat pricey but well worth it for a special occasion."

  • "Wonderful food and amazing ocean experience at high tide. Lobster night was well worth it. Tables very close together. Maybe try to space out diners if you are not full. Lobster Bisque was the best part. We didn't care for the trio dessert that came with the lobster dinner. We will be back when we return to La Jolla."

  • " We paid $250 (including tip) for an appetizer, one salad, one bisque, a bottle of wine and dessert. For those prices - service better be phenomenal! It wasn't. We weren't seated at a table with a view even though my reservation requested one. They told me I couldn't request tables. When I got there a table on the window was "reserved." That confused me - why can they reserve it, but not me? It was strange. I'd go back because the view was incredible, and the food just as good. Just be aware of strange hostesses that don't know how to provide quality service."

  • "Went during an advertised high tide dining experience: did not disappoint. The view was spectacular and the tide and weather cooperated. The food was on the rich side and the service was impeccable. Especially liked the diver scallops and the lobster bisque, but the crab cake was bready and disappointing. Only real negative was that we were celebrating my wife's birthday, which was noted on the Internet reservation. Several other parties received token birthday cakes, but we did not. They seemed a bit disorganized, so back up any request with a phone call on the day of your reservation to increase your chances. Would go back again, but the place is a bit off the beaten path, and parking there is a bear."

  • "Was recommended here by a friend. The food was terrific and the staff attentive and helpful. They even gave a surprise dessert because we there celebrating our 20th anniversary. And mother nature provided no end to entertainment with sunset over the water and high tide coming in."

  • "Me and my husband was celebrating our anniversary and so I was told if you let them know they will put in an area with the best view. We we're put In the back with wall post blocking most of our view. I felt seating was a big part of the restaurant experience. The restaurant was very romantics, the food was fabulous, and our server was very attentive and even gave us extra dessert for celebrating our special day there, but I wish they would have place us closer toward the window where the wave come crashing in especially after I have made a reservation and told them we were celebrating something special."

  • "As always, the Marine room chef never disappoints, the food is excellent, tasty, unique, and served beautifully. The oceanfront location is gorgeous and provides an amazing view and some entertainment while dining. I would recommend this restaurant as the finest in La Jolla."

  • "We have lived in San Diego for 15 years and this was the first time going to the Marine Room. The ambiance, the service and presentation was top notch, the food was average. All and All well worth it."

  • "The ambience, food, and view lived up to my recollection of the Marine Room that I shared with my husband some 18 years ago. I am now a widow and visiting from Flordia and wanted to recapture that special moment. I brought my granddaughter, great-grandson, and a guest with me this time and it was everything I remembered it to be. The only negative was that the hostess's greeting was not as welcoming as it should have been and although we were on time for our reservation, we were not seated in a timely fashion with no effort to make us feel welcome."

  • "We had Father's Day buffet brunch at the Marine Room so could select a variety. All was outstanding, but especially good were the seafood crepes and the omelet choices, which included shrimp & wild mushrooms."

  • "Decided to splurge and take the wife out to a place we had never been to.....yet. We were about 10 minutes late for our reservation time and that was not a problem. We were taken to a table with a great view of the ocean right away. The food was excellent as well as the service! The chef even made his way to our table and chatted with us for a bit. (Got a good history about the fish I chose.) we will definitely be returning!"

  • "My husband is a gourmand. We have traveled to several countries and he always remembers the trip by the meals he ate. After our meal at The Marine Room, he said it was the best filet mignon he has ever had. I am sure he will never forget it! My halibut was excellent. The sauce with the lobster tail was exceptional. We had a boisterous table next to us and the waiter was apporpriatately apologetic, but our view of the ocean made up for the inconvenience of the adjacent table"

  • "I was disappointed on the location of our table . I requested a table by the window so we can have a good view of the high tide and what we got was the downside section of the restaurant and behind those tables next to the windows. The view to the ocean was not good at all. I did not mind paying their charges which is considered on the high side so long as I got what I requested. If they could not provide the customers request for a table by the window, at least the restaurant should have notified me. Also the table they gave was not level, it tipped at the back. I notified the waiter but he just shrugged his shoulders. Nothing was done. I will not come back due to their failure to alert me that the table I requested was not available."

  • "We celebrated our anniversary here during one if the high tide dinners. We had an amazing view of the waves crashing up against the windows. The service was professional, courteous and knowledgeable. Drinks and food were all fabulous. I highly recommend the cobia if it's on the menu. The lobster bisque is also heavenly. Most of the clientele was dressed up, which is fun sometimes in such a casual city. We received a lovely complimentary dessert in honor of our anniversary as well. While I was prepared for this to be a very expensive meal, I was surprised when the bill came to find it was more reasonable than I expected. That happily means we can return more often!"

  • "I recently had the most expensive kids meal I've ever eaten. We went to the Marine Room for our wedding anniversary recently. The staff is friendly and the location with the ocean view is great. The problem I have is this. I ordered the Center Cut Angus Filet Mignon for $46. This steak had to be under 6oz and flat as a rock. I've had better steaks at Sizzler. I understand that you're essentially paying for the view and pretentious atmosphere, but please google 'filot mignon steak' and than look at pictures of the ones posted here. Our bill was $111.54 for two of the smallest portions I ever seen."

  • "I was disappointed in the seating view particularly since this was a high tide day. Avoid table 1, nice seats, terrible view. The bar had a better view than dining - which was disappointing for a birthday celebration. As we ate I noticed folks were arriving much later and getting better seats-- We were there at 6:00 on a Tuesday. Next time I will ask to be re-seated. It would have been nice if they checked to see if we were satisfied with the seats. It spoiled the event. Food was great, service was good. Last time I went with a group we had great seating during high tide. That was much better."

  • "We were about 15 minutes early for our reservation and were surprised they made us wait to be seated in the empty dining room, but it gave us a chance to sit at the bar and take in the view, and have a cocktail (The 4G martini and Modern Old Fashioned were fantastic). After we finished our drinks we moved to our table, which was a cozy booth about 4 feet from the ocean, thanks to their sea-level windows. The food was delicious-I ordered the Halibut, which was flaky and moist with a wonderful quinoa side, but my date ordered the seared Ahi and it blew everything else out of the water. The polenta side was tasty, but not memorable compared to the entrees. Our server was also one of the best I've ever seen. I would return here in a heartbeat."

  • "My wife and I went to the Marine Room on a recent Sunday evening to celebrate our anniversary. I mentioned in my online reservation that it was our anniversary and that I would like a window seat. We led to our table straight away. It was a nice window seat! We enjoyed a glass of champagne before dinner. We had the Lobster Bisque to start, it was good. My wife had the Scallops and Shrimp. The scallops were amazing! The shrimp okay. I had the Filet Mignon and Lobster. Both were very good. Dessert was on the house, a nice lemon tart. We had a nice time talking, eating and enjoying the view. The waiter was perfect, he basically left us alone to enjoy our time together!!"
