A word from The Marine Room
For generations of San Diegans, the “Seahorse” symbol of The Marine Room has long stood for its dramatic on-the-surf location and award-winning cuisine by Executive Chef Bernard Guillas and Chef de Cuisine Ron Oliver. Considering this rare blend of culinary excellence, uncompromising service and beachfront setting, it’s no wonder The Marine Room has become a true San Diego landmark. Simply stated, this is fine dining at its finest. Opened in 1941, The Marine Room quickly became famous as pounding surf created dramatic displays against the restaurant's windows. For more than half a century, celebrities, world figures, residents, and visitors have made it a habit to enjoy the spectacular panoramic views of the Pacific and exceptional cuisine. We invite you to San Diego's premier dining destination and experience how each tide brings something new to The Marine Room. You’re not reserving a table – you’re joining a 70-year tradition. Diner Reviews
  • "Of all the times we have eaten here, never experienced such slow service"

  • "Wonderful food and service. The lobster bisque was truly a delight. Were celebrating an anniversary and were treated fabulously."
    Dined on 7/19/2014
  • "This experience was somewhat a disappointment. The wine pairing had less than a third of a glass of wine which for the price and the type of wines was unacceptable. Also, it was disappointing that patrons in beach attire with a baby carriage were allowed on a Saturday evening."

  • "A great all around experience at The Marine Room. Service was outstanding, food was delicious and beautifully presented. We timed our visit to be dining at sunset and the view of the ocean can't be beat. Highly recommend this restaurant."

  • "Fantastic food, service, and location. The proximity to the ocean, along with a beautiful Californina sunset yielded lovely and peaceful visual delights. We never felt rushed and were encouraged to take our time with the dining experience. The wines recommended by our waiter were exceptional and the Spindrift Cobblestone Pie was indeed a treat to cap off a great evening."

  • "It was so good! I am a vegetarian, no flesh, and found the salad, tofu dish, whipped truffle potatoes and desserts delicious!"

  • "This is the place for any special occasion. Wonderful food, great wait staff and amazing view! The scallops melted in my mouth & the desserts were wonderful! I enjoyed The Marine Room more than Mister A's. Not as uptight. I felt comfortable here & as though I belonged. I can't wait to return. This is now my special place :) Walk in, sit down and prepare to be pampered!"

  • "Great food and restaurant too bad a rotten kid was at the table next to us - not the restaurant's fault but quite disturbing"

  • "I booked our reservation way in advance as we have previously when dining with Marine Room and Chef Bernard. Our reservation was for 9 PM and we arrived ten minutes earlier. This was to be my husband's Birthday dinner and we were both excited as we always are when dining with you. We waited over an hour and a half and still were not seated. We ended up ordering appetizers at the upper look over bar. This was NOT what I wanted for his Birthday and even that service was very slow. Suggestion: Either only allow those seated 1.5 hours or cut off the limit of reservations that you offer and schedule additional wait Staff. We didn't actually have any food until after 11:00 PM. We still love you Marine Room but this hurt. :("

  • "Everything from the hostess, bar tender, waitstaff, food and valet were professional and fun. They all made a great memory for my husband and I. The menu selection was more than enough with wonderful appetizer's and entree's. I had the scallops appetizer with the filet mignon. The entree included potatoes and the most incredible beets and carrots. My husband had the wedge salad with the Salmon entree and incredible vegetables and rice. The view of the ocean with the waves crashing up to the building was phenomenal."

  • "Valet parking = Excellent. Seafood = Excellent. Ocean View = Excellent. Service = Good, if busy, don't expect exceptional service. Bussers more at the table taking plates then waiter checking on us. Had to ask for liquid refills repeatedly. Waiter was pleasant. If Vegetarian or Vegan, very little options for you."

  • "While the view is good, the evening was ruined by the worst service we have ever experienced in an upscale restaurant. Ten tables in this room, with 4 service people and a "room" manager. One would think one of them would check on us at least once. We had to stop the waiter to ask for water, a drink, desert, and the bill. We watch three of them reset two tables of four to a table of eight. It took three of them twenty minutes, while table next to us waited for their main course. Our advice is to go to McDonald's, get a burger, and sit on the beach. It will be a better experience."

  • "Gorgeous view and delicious food. The high tide dinner was an extra special experience."
    Dined on 7/9/2014
  • "As always, great food with great service. Normally a great experience for high tide viewing, but not so with a larger group of 7 on our recent visit. The 7th person was sitting at the outside end of the table, which seemed more like we squeezed him in (and he seemed in the pathway of other diners and the staff). We asked for a larger table, with a better view, but were told we couldn't change tables. Disappointing since the restaurant was fairly open when we arrived at 6PM. The view was off to the side by the beach/hotel next door (not a prime view for the high tide experience, which is why we came). Tab $600 (with tip), for 7 diners (4 had 1 alcoholic beverage)."

  • "This restaurant was a great way to celebrate our anniversary, seems to be popular for special occasions. We were there July 8th, near high tide. Unique to watch the waves hit the windows in front of you. Food was delicious, great service, unique atmosphere with the waves... however, very basic and dated decor. Dont expect a trendy restaurant, however we are still glad to have experienced it."

  • "I'm working temporarily in SD, and my wife came to visit for a mini-vacation. We're not food snobs, but we don't care to eat at the franchise establishments. I knew I wanted to take her someplace special, so when searching online for "4 star dining", The Marine Room popped up. I went to the website, checked it out, and could tell that this was going to be the place. Sumptuous looking appetizers, and an awesome elegant menu, with a beautiful ambience. The restaurant delivered the goods and more. My wife was thrilled!!! Although a little pricey for the blue-collar working guy, this was a special occasion for us, and we felt like were on our first date again. The staff was professional in the extreme, and we wanted for nothing!!! 5 STARS!!!"

  • "Was hoping to make this restaurant our go to place for date night as we live in La Jolla but our dinner just wasn't impressive. After we finished our appetizer it took about 30-40 min to get the main course and my lobster wasn't cooked properly. We had to ask to have our drinks refilled which seemed really odd for a place where waiters are wearing suits. The dessert was fabulous and our view for the fireworks but overall the hubby wasn't impressed..."

  • "We have been coming here for special occasions and have always loved everything about the Marine Room- except this. Children. Not just multiple kids after bedtime, but loud, screaming children whose parents were more concerned with drinking then consideration of others. This is NOT a kid friendly restaurant! Please, get a babysitter if you can't keep your two years olds quiet. We were very disappointed that no one made any attempt to lower the noise level and make it pleasant for the other patrons. Had it not been for this, everything else was perfect. It was enough to spoil a romantic evening."

  • "I dined at the Marine Room as a special treat for my wife as it was her birthday. The location with the beach and sea view as well as the dining experience was par excellent. The menu had many great choices along with a very superb wine list. The service and the friendliness of the staff made the entire experience most memorable. My wife told me afterward that she wants to come here again and again. This restaurant is one of those that once you have experienced it; you will never forget it and look forward to coming back."

  • "Very good food, excellent service. But a bit overpriced. Excellent view of the ocean - close up!"

  • " We paid $250 (including tip) for an appetizer, one salad, one bisque, a bottle of wine and dessert. For those prices - service better be phenomenal! It wasn't. We weren't seated at a table with a view even though my reservation requested one. They told me I couldn't request tables. When I got there a table on the window was "reserved." That confused me - why can they reserve it, but not me? It was strange. I'd go back because the view was incredible, and the food just as good. Just be aware of strange hostesses that don't know how to provide quality service."

  • "Food was well-prepared and the presentation was very nice. Service was excellent. Awesome view of the Pacific. Somewhat pricey but well worth it for a special occasion."

  • "Went during an advertised high tide dining experience: did not disappoint. The view was spectacular and the tide and weather cooperated. The food was on the rich side and the service was impeccable. Especially liked the diver scallops and the lobster bisque, but the crab cake was bready and disappointing. Only real negative was that we were celebrating my wife's birthday, which was noted on the Internet reservation. Several other parties received token birthday cakes, but we did not. They seemed a bit disorganized, so back up any request with a phone call on the day of your reservation to increase your chances. Would go back again, but the place is a bit off the beaten path, and parking there is a bear."

  • "Was recommended here by a friend. The food was terrific and the staff attentive and helpful. They even gave a surprise dessert because we there celebrating our 20th anniversary. And mother nature provided no end to entertainment with sunset over the water and high tide coming in."

  • "Me and my husband was celebrating our anniversary and so I was told if you let them know they will put in an area with the best view. We we're put In the back with wall post blocking most of our view. I felt seating was a big part of the restaurant experience. The restaurant was very romantics, the food was fabulous, and our server was very attentive and even gave us extra dessert for celebrating our special day there, but I wish they would have place us closer toward the window where the wave come crashing in especially after I have made a reservation and told them we were celebrating something special."

  • "I've been eating here on special occasions since my Senior Prom in 1963. I've never been disappointed or let down whether it be food or service. Of course the scenic view is spectacular, but the overall experience keeps pace. Please, never change.....!!!"

  • "As always, the Marine room chef never disappoints, the food is excellent, tasty, unique, and served beautifully. The oceanfront location is gorgeous and provides an amazing view and some entertainment while dining. I would recommend this restaurant as the finest in La Jolla."

  • "Wonderful food and amazing ocean experience at high tide. Lobster night was well worth it. Tables very close together. Maybe try to space out diners if you are not full. Lobster Bisque was the best part. We didn't care for the trio dessert that came with the lobster dinner. We will be back when we return to La Jolla."

  • "We have lived in San Diego for 15 years and this was the first time going to the Marine Room. The ambiance, the service and presentation was top notch, the food was average. All and All well worth it."

    Dined on 6/20/2014
  • "The ambience, food, and view lived up to my recollection of the Marine Room that I shared with my husband some 18 years ago. I am now a widow and visiting from Flordia and wanted to recapture that special moment. I brought my granddaughter, great-grandson, and a guest with me this time and it was everything I remembered it to be. The only negative was that the hostess's greeting was not as welcoming as it should have been and although we were on time for our reservation, we were not seated in a timely fashion with no effort to make us feel welcome."

  • "We had Father's Day buffet brunch at the Marine Room so could select a variety. All was outstanding, but especially good were the seafood crepes and the omelet choices, which included shrimp & wild mushrooms."
