Diner Reviews
  • "It was my first time at The Magpie and had heard about it through word of mouth from several people. So I decided to reserve a table for some out of town guests and it was a great decision. The service was excellent and the food was en pointe. The ambiance was kind of steampunk mixed with antebellum with a dark red velvet booth that spans the length of the limited seating area. I don't recommend going there with more than a group of four as I highly stress the limited seating but it was cozy and comfortable. The menu was divided into small, medium and large plates and had a lot of interesting items to choose from. It was very thought out and diverse. I would absolutely go back and recommend it as a Richmond gem."

  • "I will usually try any type of food at least once! The chefs choice, 4-6 course meal, by far best way to expand your pallet. I have enjoyed things I may have never eaten before."

  • "Really enjoyed a great dinner, well prepared, innovative plates with very good presentation. The made on site rabbit sausage was excellent as was the roasted beet salad. We hope to return to experience their other specialties. Highly recommend!"

  • "There are so many new restaurants in Richmond that we want to try, so since we have been to Magpie at least 4 times already, it has been awhile since we have been there. The latest Groupon encouraged us to return and, yet again, we weren't disappointed. Magpie is consistently wonderful from the welcome (by name) when we entered the door through the impeccable service, incredible food and delectable dessert! Thanks for the Groupon and thanks for reminding us that you are still there! We will return more often."

  • "If you love a place with a small, farm fresh menu with adventurous options, this place is definitely a must visit. The small dining room also created a very personable dining experience. Bone marrow, spicy sausage, and brussel sprouts wowed us at the start. Venison, Scottish salmon, and rabbit made the entree'. And just when we thought we were done, we were blown away by the Cap'n Crunch Ice Cream and "Girl Scout Samoa Cookie" pie."

  • "Working in Richmond as consultants we visit lots of restaurants and wanted to try something new...ergo Magpie. We were a little late, having caught the hotel shuttle, the hostess was not too pleased and sat us at the small high-top table right next to the door- it felt a little like being punished. However, once the cocktails arrived we began to open up and prepare to experience what they had to offer. We ordered the mixed greens and flank steak and Brussels sprouts and a fish entree (don't remember what kind)...and it was ABSOLUTELY AWESOME!!! We both made happy plates! They change their menu regularly so if you look at the menu online I recommend calling ahead to see if the menu is current."

  • "Magpie has a large bar with a nice liquor/beer list for such a small place. We were seated 15 minutes late for our reservation and the bartender was not very attentive during our wait. The food was good, but the menu focused on a few exotic items and repeated them. This limited choices if one did not like those items. The chef seemed to be trying a bit too hard to be creative. It was a nice place to try, but we are not planning a return."

  • "The Magpie is very cute and the cocktails are wonderful. The food, however, was disappointing. Both of our entrees (rockfish and hanger steak) were average at best. Go for cocktails and small plates."

  • "The food was delicious! Our waiter was polite, extremely helpful, and attentive. The Magpie also had a great atmosphere. I highly recommend eating here. The desserts were tasty but I loved the main menu even better. We will definitely be back. A reservation is a must because there is limited seating."

  • "Loved the food, atmosphere, and the service. The unique combination of ingredients in the venison with pears and granola was amazing. I'm on a diet, so sadly, I could not try the dessert. But I will be back, because the desserts all sound so good."

  • "The only drawback is the size of the restuarant. It takes a few days to get a reservation so plan ahead. There was also an item or two on the menu that wasn't available but what we did order was delicious."

  • "The servings aren't huge, but the food is so delicious that you leave completely satisfied. All the tastes perfectly complemented each other. This was our second visit - and it was just as good as the first time. Wonderful food! Quiet, intimate setting - you can easily hold a conversation."

  • "I had reservations for over three weeks and we were sat at a high top by the window and door. Waitress was nice but she just gave us menus and wine menu without going over or explaining anything. Taste of the food was out of this world. And there was something on the menu for everyone. But the portions were small, particularly for the amount we paid. Two apps, two main courses, and two desserts came to $100. I had a soft drink and my girlfriend had one glass of wine and then water. The atmosphere is great, the menu is adventurous, and the food tastes amazing, but I would think twice about going again because of the cost and amount of food. I'm not one to complain about cost when the food is good and ample, but would reconsider going back."

  • "We planned a couples' dinner for eight at The Magpie recently and though the restaurant is small it was the perfect atmosphere for a group evening out. We arrived a bit early for our reservation and were actually seated five minutes early. The specialty cocktails were perfect for a group who look forward to something new. All of the food was incredible and beautifully-prepared. Out of the eight of us we ordered six different entrees and all received rave reviews but we must give huge thumbs up to the butternut squash curry soup and the brussel sprouts starters which were AMAZING! In addition the service was impeccable as our server was attentive to every need and answered every inquiry we had. Highly recommend for foodies!!"

  • "Everything we ate was amazing! The special of the evening was a brisket we're not likely to forget anytime soon. The menu is creative and well-prepared, the service is friendly and warm. This is one of our new favorites. Only regret it took us so long to finally get there!"

  • "Although you might drive by Magpie without a second glance, food was of the utmost quality and originality. From small plates to dessert, we were not disappointed. Make sure you make a reservation...they filled up early!"

  • "This is not a big restaurant but one of the best in town. Shuffle and Lane just plain loves to cook and does exceptionally well. He also has one of the best bourbon selections in Richmond. The service is impeccable and it's very nice to have small medium and large plates. It accommodates so many palates."

  • "We had reservations for brunch. The restaurant was about half full at 11:00A and there was no delay in being seated or in placing our drink order. Conversation was easy as the seating area was quiet with no loud music. The server was very good. She did a great job describing the specials of the day and the menu items and she ensured that our coffee cups were always full. The food was exceptional. We had bacon hush puppies, the Pig Head Torchon and the Traditional Breakfast. For dessert, we shared a slice of curry cheesecake."

  • "Our waitress was outstanding. She walked us through the menu choices and confirmed our wine selection choice was a match with our requested wine preferences. And she recommended the Sunday Brunch, which we will plan on coming back to experience. The homemade sausage small plate was wonderful. The atmosphere seems a little tired with the plush red velvet seating. The prices were moderate and overall the food was very good. I had the tile fish which is just not a personal favorite. We'll be back and hope that either the peasant or quail is on the menu. Our waitress explained that the menu changes frequently. So what is posted on the website may not be available."

  • "I've only ever been for brunch, but for brunch I've been many times! So amazing! Bacon Hushpuppies are a must. Have tried the Steak and Eggs, Pork Head Torchon, many specials, Biscuits and Gravy and the Classic Brunch. Never disappointed."

  • "The food was fantastic. I got the Venison with Asian Pears and Popcorn Polenta and was surprised at the amount of flavor in the venison and the tenderness of the meat. The only slight disappointment was that the Chocolate Panacotta was just Chocolate Ganache, and had none of the lightness I normally expect, but was great nonetheless."

  • "Dining at the Magpie takes me back to Portland with its ambiance and whimsical choice of ingredients. I ordered a cocktail and two glasses of wine for the other ladies. We started with the Pig Head Torchon, which was subtle and smooth and paired really well with the punchy brussels sprout relish with which it was served. Next came the duck confit sausage. Out of this world. Tender, rich, and perfectly seasoned. Our last shared plate was the brussels sprouts with balsamic and parm- Simple. The best thing we had all night. We ordered three large plates to share as well- the venison (PERFECT dish), scallops, and pheasant breast, and finished off with the fennel cheesecake. We were stuffed, but pleasantly so, and will be back soon for more!"

  • "Very creative cuisine with interesting combinations of ingredients. We enjoyed the pork-crawfish sausage, pheasant confit and the venison, plus the pumpkin-peanut bisque. The food was very attractively arranged on the plate, showing the care taken both with the preparation and the presentation. Waitstaff was very attentive to our needs, but lacked a bit on knowledge of the beers on tap, although bartender picked up the slack, despite a very busy bar scene on Sat night."

  • "I've been trying to come here for a little while on one of my trips to Richmond. It's been busy every time I've tried, and I never made a reservation. This time we were dining a little later, so it was easy to get a table. Food was OUTSTANDING, especially for the price--prices are not bad here at all. Very thoughtful and creative food. Modern, but comfort. So good. Would definitely go back again, and would definitely recommend!"

  • "The food was outstanding, I got the braised goat and split it with everyone at the table..all thought is was delicious. I got the smoked ribeye steak for my main course and I have to say it was one of the best steaks that I have ever eaten. One of our party was not not happy, in that he got the scallops, and he stated it was just not enough food. Everyone else was very happy with their meals."

  • "Short but interesting selection of apps and entrees. Wine list ok but after two tries at ordering white wine and being told they did not have either, we let the host select a Greek wine which was good, not remarkable. Waiter seemed new and not really sure of the food or wine. Good, not Great."

  • "I had imagined that the Magpie would be a quiet, cozy, romantic little spot. Brightly lit with fairly closely packed tables and yacht rock/disco on the sound system, the Magpie is more casual and communally cozy than I had anticipated. It was impossible not to hear the conversations of our neighbors and the servers reciting the menu to other dinners. When we arrived, there were only 2 other tables seated and a few folks at the bar, but when we left 2 hours later the restaurant and the bar were completely full. The food was very very good--imaginative and well-prepared, but both the floor and the kitchen may be a bit under-staffed based on the long delays between courses. Our server did her best, but she was clearly overwhelmed."

  • "The waitress took a very long time to take our drink order and it was downhill from there. I'm afraid Magpie is another example of a restaurant with entrees combining too many ingredients that don't mesh well together. It's not often that I sit down at a place and can't find anything i want to eat on the menu, as here. I settled on the scallops with chorizo and cabbage in pork broth. The scallops were tiny. Other than the broth, which I couldn't enjoy because no bread was available, the bowl contained a few pieces of mediocre chorizo and a bite of cabbage. The experience was a big disappointment."

  • "I tend to be a steak-and-potatoes guy, but at Magpie I took a chance on the octopus and was rewarded with a sensational dip into the ocean. My wife and I invariably trade bites form each other's plate, and the full, rich flavor of her venison contrasted wonderfully with the more delicate octopus. Magpie is off the beaten track for Richmond restaurants, and well worth detouring from your usual culinary trails."
