A word from The Lion
John DeLucie is the Chef Proprietor of The Lion, Bill's Food & Drink, and Crown restaurants in New York City. The Lion opened in May 2010 on beautiful tree-lined West 9th street – it features a menu consistent with the Chef himself, classic American with undeniable Italian influences. Bill's Food & Drink opened in November 2012 in Midtown, and features hearty American cuisine. Crown opened September of 2011, in a 1930's mansion steps away from The Metropolitan Museum of Art on the Upper East Side.Continued

  • "We had dinner on Sunday evening. The restaurant was half empty but it did not matter. The interior was really nice with candles and all the decoration. Lobster soup was excellent and pasta for main course as well. Wine list was good, too."

  • "I was very impressed when we walked in. We were greeted by a very friendly host. The dining room had a Dj who was so adorable in his suit and slicked back hair. So far so good. Our waiter came over to us a few minutes into sitting but it took 30 minutes for us to order and receive our drinks. The table of girls next to us sat after us and were served immediately. The first course came out in a somewhat timely fashion and the food was good. The main course took awhile and it was somewhat difficult to get our waiters attention for more drinks. The main course food was good - nothing over the top though. All in all I'd go back just to give them another chance. I'm hoping it was just an off day for our waiter."

  • "Finally got the chance to check out The Lion. We went on a Monday evening. The food and service was great. Cool ambiance without trying too hard. Great drink menu, the burrata and Brussel sprouts were delish. The branzino was ok I've had better . Overall, I enjoyed everything. The type of place where you feel like you are sitting in a room with someone famous , an intelligent and successful crowd that prefers to keep themselves under the radar."

  • "I walked in and sat at the bar on a broken stool that rocked and was falling apart. Same with the one next to me. We sat down and the banquet was full of crumbs on the seat. The upulstory was from 100 years ago and everyone sank in. No support and extremely uncomfortable. Music defining. No one could talk above it or hear anything anyone said. Very inexpensive which accounts for very young diners looking for a bargain. If I were doing the same i would go to EJ's for a good omelet. The food was awful and the meni too limited. No omelets available. perhaps the dinner menu is better."

  • "I ate a number of times at the Lion over the last few years, but was extremely disappointed this time. Unlike before they now have a Brunch special priced at ~35 USD which also gives you drinks. We ordered our food and bloody marys only to have the food arrive within 5 minutes and drinks only 15 minutes. It then took ages to be offered and then given a refill. The impression we got was they were being slow with the drinks to limit consumption, and fast with the food to turn over the table quickly (we were there for <1hr). Really disappointing."

  • "Not spectacular! We chose a great Malbec. My Bronzino was satisfactory but not great! The kale salad was good but I have had better. Overall good resto but not memorable. The atmosphere was good but the chairs were wobbly and in need of repair. The noise was deafening but we sat upstairs!"

  • "I had a wonderful time at The Lion. The food was well prepared, the drinks were perfectly served and the wait staff was very accommodating. This is however, something that does cost a pretty penny to visit. The bottles of wine quickly get out of control in terms of pricing, I am sure they're wonderful. Wines by the glass were more reasonable. Visit for a romantic occasion, the music is nice to listen to while you dine and the atmosphere is quite comfortable."

  • "Met an old friend for dinner last Thursday night. We were seated at a very nice table by the window but it was uncomfortably chilly. Tables surround a large and noisy bar. The atmosphere is more down market pub and their food was disappointing. The fried calamari was about the worst I have ever had although few restaurant's get as good as Carmine's. The braised rabbit pappardelle was boring and tasteless. My companion's risotto was equally bland. We did really enjoy their savory biscuits although the waiter whisked our bread plates and butter away as soon as they were empty without an offer of more. This is really a neighborhood watering hole, not a spot for a remarkable dining experience."

  • "the space was neat and the interior design was notable, however the seating was cramped, it was loud and hard to hear/converse, the food left a lot to be desired, the wine list was limited with no moderately priced options and the service was sub par. all in all, not worth the money. There are as lot of other restuarants in the city that delivery better food, wine options, service and ambience for less than this price tag."

  • "I have dined at the Lion in the past and been very impressed with the food, wine, and atmosphere. Unfortunately, this experience was quite disappointing. We started off our meal with Crab legs, which were quite good. However, that was followed by disappointing brussel sprouts, which were soggy with poor flavor. In the past the lion served a dynamite brussel sprout dish with bacon and apple reduction. Not sure where that version went. Our next course was a kale salad - it was interesting, but the dressing seemed wrong... creamy rather than a bitter vinagrette. The scallops were decent, but a bit too watery and soft. Dessert was the highlight with a very nice molten chocolate cake and port wine."

The service was good but the food very mediocre. my steak was tough and tadteless. i asked for it med/rare and it was al.ostensibly well done. gristly. The noise level was terrible. The tables too close together. whenever the waiter served the next table the waiter or waitress practically sat on my lap or bumped into me. overpriced wine.for 3 people the bill came to amost $300. What a waste."

  • "Dinner for 6. Seated in Siberia (2nd floor balcony). Least expensive wine 100 and probably spent another 100 on bottled waters, both of which waiters inappropriately and over-enthusiastically poured at every sip. Food average for the neighborhood. Perhaps because of wknd/holiday period, crowd neither here nor there. It is however an attractive dining room with flattering lighting. Menu prices fair but wine list and waters high -- total bill $800 for simple dinner of salads and main. Selected the Lion as one of the few with availability on a friday night and I wanted to give it a third try, the second having been good as I came with a regular client, but first and third disappointed. Too bad as had great potential for neighborhood gem."

In fact when we pleaded for our wine (from a different waiter), no one could find it, didn't know where it was or what we ordered (suggested by sommelier, therefore we didn't know it's exact name). GET GOOD SERVERS. Always an issue there, but this was last straw. Good food, won't go back."

  • "I made a reservation through Open Table for Thanksgiving dinner. The restaurant called me to ask me if I wanted an earlier reservation that would enable them to seat us in the main dinning room rather than the bar. I changed the reservation as I wanted to eat in the dining room. When my party and I got to the restaurant we were seated in the bar, No room in the dining room. Service was slow and long lapses between courses. I have eaten here often and this was not the same experience. If you are going top open on a holiday and charge a premium....get it RIGHT."

  • "Service was terrible. Never asked if we wanted add'l bread or drinks, but brought us a second bottle of sparkling water without asking us and we were charged for it. We got there at 5:30 but had to wait about 15 minutes To be seated -they were running late in getting dining room opened for dinner.told waiter we had to get out early to make a show and he said he would take care of it. Food arrived so slowly we had to rush to finish out entree to make the show ."
