A word from The Lifesaving Station - Sanderling Resort
Located in the original—and splendidly restored—Caffey’s Inlet Life Saving Station No. 5, the Lifesaving Station is a casual, three-meal-a-day restaurant celebrating southern coastal cuisine and regional, organic products. New with the renovations is a spacious outside seating deck and large fireplace.

Known for its “best breakfast on the Outer Banks” and a-la-carte Sunday brunch, the Lifesaving Station is a favorite Duck, N.C. restaurant choice for both locals and vacationers. And be sure the try the Lifesaving Station’s famous Carolina BBQ Sampler and Spring Mountain Farms Buttermilk Fried Chicken, always on the menu.

The Lifesaving Station maintains an impressive wine list. Local breweries are featured while specialty cocktails feature coastal “house cocktails” and bourbons. Upstairs, the renovated No. 5 offers sweeping views of the Currituck Sound. The relaxed atmosphere is conducive to catching the game and enjoying quality cuisine.

  • "The service was faster than most restaurants I've ever been to in North Carolina. Staff was fast and polite. We had a reservation later in the evening. The place wasn't packed, but was reasonable busy. I thoroughly enjoyed the food and it came out fast. It's the only restaraunt we've eaten at in the Outer Banks, so can't compare to anywhere else, but it's definitely on our list when we come back."

  • "This place is unbelievable. I only had the breakfast there but on my week vacation I stopped in four times due to the food and staff! They were amazing as were the meals. Only complaint is that it is a little pricey, but for the quality of the food the huge portions you get and the service something that is easily forgotten. Especially on vacation. I will be back there on many vacations to come."

  • "Easy to make reservations, service was just right. Crab chowder was very tasty, mussels were some of the best I've had. Very clean, bright, comfortable atmosphere. We'll be back!"

  • "We stayed at the Sanderling Resort and looked at our options for fine dining in the area. Kimball's offers fantastic options of why you have no reason to go anywhere else. Set aside the great view, beautiful restaurant, etc., the food was fantastic. Ours started off with a great salad that we split that included spiced apricots (would not have guessed how good that was). We had both seafood and steak that were equally worth it. The wine paired with our meal was extremely well matched."

  • "Dinner overall was nice. A pleasant evening out. Portions could have been larger particularly given the price."

  • "We were celebrating a birthday and when making reservations I mentioned this. Our party of 6 was seated in a private room which was a very nice surprise. The mussels and calamari were delicious. Everyone enjoyed their meals and we were all pleased with the service. I believe we will be back at the Lifesaving Station on our next visit to Duck. Make a reservation and enjoy."

  • "The menu sounds great, but the actual food misses the mark. The Mac and cheese was bland. The fried chicken still had undercooked skin under the crispy coating. The tuna and tenderloin were both overcooked. The grouper and the fried pickles were good. Wine list was good. Service was good and attentive."

  • "I am sorry to report that the food at this facility was poor. The prices were high for the quality of food. Our dinners were served at room temperature and cannot compare to our dinner at colington cafe. I requested a table with a view but we were not given one even though the place was mostly empty. Our server was friendly but not very knowledgeable or attentive."

  • "We dined indoors with a party of six extended family members. Our waitress was very pleasant and attentive. Cocktails and bread took too long coming out, but the appetizers and entrees came out just fine. The wine list was more than adequate. I had the sea scallops with the sweet corn and bacon succotash. Nice combination! My wife had the flounder and enjoyed it. I heard no complaints from the others on the food. The restaurant was 1/2 to 2/3 full but the acoustics left a lot to be desired."

  • "We finally had a family vacation so I made my reservation here a few weeks before we arrived. We wanted to give a special treat to everyone instead of always eating in during the week. We had two toddlers and 6 adults and when we arrived, they greeted us cheerfully and gave us a private dining room with high chairs at each end of the table; exactly as we requested. They also made a special effort to get the children's food to the table asap and didn't seem to mind when mac and cheese and other toddler finds decorated the floor around the high chairs. I now children can be trying when eating out, but the folks at TLS accomodate our every need- a great nite for the family!"

  • "Really enjoyed our meal, and one of the servers provided other good options for our stay. Must get the mussels for an appetizer - only $9 and a huge portion."

  • "Great beach place. Simply one of the best on the Outer Banks. Don't miss!"

  • "The food was extremely tasty and well prepared. My husband and I both had a crab cake appetizer. It was a large cake served in a sizzling skillet with corn, green onions and remoulade. Delicious. I had shrimp and grits for the entree. Smoky sausage, grilled shrimp, rich, slightly spicy sauce- amazing. Plenty for leftovers. The only negative is the noise level. It wasn't helped by a number of young children at another table. If that isn't a problem for you, the food is well worth it. "

  • "We absolutely love this place! We visit at least twice each week we are in OBX! The food is local and fresh. The menu has something for everyone. A staple is the Shrimp and Grits. Also special this trip was the Fried chicken and Waffles appetizer. They easily accommodated for a shellfish allergy substituting another side for someone in our party. The ambiance of the building with it being an old coast watcher's station of the Lifesaving Service just adds to the experience. Beautiful views of the bay from the upstairs dining room make it a perfect place to view the sunset while sipping a cocktail and enjoying dinner. Great place to celebrate a special occasion. Service is top notch. Ask for Mark he will take great care of you. Must visit."

  • "The service was impeccable. Our server knew his menu and offered suggestions that worked for us. He facilitated some substitutions due to dietary restrictions without issue. Wine was awesome. A laid back atmosphere that definitely contributes to the experience. Will go back!!!"

  • "My teenage daughters and I had a fabulous breakfast at The Lifesaving Station on a recent Saturday during a quick weekend get-away. I had the Eggs Sanderling which was unbelievably good - the two poached eggs were covered with a mustard based sauce that's made on the premise, and the crab meat was real, lump carolina crab meat that was simply delicious. I savored every bit of it, it was that good. My daughters ordered the yogurt granola with fruits and the Outer Banks Breakfast, both were delicious. The portions were very generous, we had to skip lunch. The wait staff were very friendly, and the restaurant is resort casual with great views."

  • "Went here to meet friends for lunch. The "duck fries with blue cheese" were ok. We thought they were going to be fried in duck fat. Our bad for not asking. I got the tempura shrimp. No. Not tempura at all. Good sized shrimp coated in a pasty flour, fried about 2 minutes TOO LONG and the batter, unlike tempura, was thick fish n chips style. On a thick piece of cod yes. Not on shrimp. Would never go back."

  • "We have gone here many times when in Duck. Food is very good, but there are some better restaurants in the area. Everyone was pleased with their meals. Shrimp and grits very good as was the rock fish and the seared scallops. Mixed berry tart for dessert was warm and delicious."

  • "This is the first time we have been back to this restaurant since they reopened. Everyone in my party found it to be a most pleasurable experience. The food was very tasteful and the presentation was very nice. The wait staff were pleasant and somewhat short handed but it wasn't to the point that anyone was annoyed. It helped with the relaxing enjoyment of friends, and food. The libations were good pours. We will definitely go back here again."

  • "5 best friends went to here for a Birthday. Wanda was wonderful taking care of us (She makes a mean Bloody Mary). Food was great! Day was cold and rainy so the burning fireplace was great! When the party was over she took our picture so we would remember a very nice time!! Thank you Wanda"

  • "We vacation in Corolla every January and have eaten at the Lifesaving Station on numerous occasions. They under went renovations in the past year and we didn't enjoy this meal nearly as much as prior visits. The ambience is quite low key but not unpleasantly so. The service was friendly but not very attentive or prompt. The food was generally good but did not justify the new price structure. Overall it was not an unpleasant experience but that it not a recommendation."

  • "We love to stay at the Sanderling once or twice each year. We recently were there over New Year's and ate breakfast at the Life Saving Station for the first time since the change of ownership. Sadly what was an outstanding dining experience has now morphed into a good but not great experience. The farmer's omlet is supposed to have goat cheese but virtually none was to be found is just one example. The service, once so special was now rather ordinary. We spoke to guests who had dinner there and they were also underwhelmed. We sincerely hope that feedback such as this will enable this restaurance to regain it's former glory."

  • "The life saving restaurant keeps getting better and better. This spot offers a bit of salvation in with good takes on southern comfort food. With a rising interest in local and sustainable food sources, we had great meals of local tuna cooked to perfection, scrumptious local rockfish and rock solid fried chicken. The service is casual and very friendly and would make even non-locals feel like locals. This is a great option when you are tired of grilling the best steaks on the planet from Tommy's Market at home."

  • "As usual an excellent meal was had by all. The chef, who works at Kimball's Kitchen on season, brought his magic to the Lifesaving Station for our pre-Christmas dinner. From the local tuna to the scallops, a great meal was enjoyed. We will look forward to many more dinners this winter."

  • "Pricey for average food. Ordered Duck and it came out extremely dry...had to send it back...and it came back the same exact way after letting the server now the issue. My wife's food was a large plate of BBQ but just average, would rather have quality over quantity."

  • "Had a wonderful Thanksgiving dinner with my family at The Lifesaving Station. This was the first time in years that we hadn't cooked dinner at home for Thanksgiving so it was nice to be pampered and waited on for a change. Food was delicious and would highly recommend."

  • "There was a family there with 3 children; the 2 youngest were allowed to run around and the parents did nothing to control their behavior. They got in the way of the staff . The little girl was yelling and the boy whistling. All very annoying to the rest off the dinners. At another table with 2 well behaved children , the parents had brought activities for the children. Big difference"

  • "My wife and had a wonderful dinner at The Life Saving Station at the Sanderling Resort last Saturday night. It was her birthday and the staff gave us a great table right by the fireplace. The food was excellent and so was the service. The Life Saving Station menu has a variety of seafood and meat dishes. We split a salad and then my wife had seared scallops and I had tuna. Both entrees tasted great the portion size was sufficient such that that we took food home for some tasty leftovers the next afternoon. The meal prices are competitive and because we live locally we were given a "locals discount". My wife and I could not have been happier with our meals and our overall experience."

  • "We stopped for lunch after we checked out of our hotel, before we started home. We were the only ones there which I don't understand as the food was great and the service was friendly. I had a crab cake sandwich - huge on a soft roll with butter lettuce. It came with homemade chips that were addictive. Lunch prices were in line with all the other local restaurants we visited during our vacation. We would go back if we are ever in the Outer Banks again."

  • "note to restaurant about 50th wedding anniversary was not acknowledged in any way, even with our reservation. upon being seated we requested overly loud music to be turned down. it was done. waitress was somewhat hard to understand but competant enough. no real interaction...justan atendent. food was good although my prefrence is not to have all in one center pile. i have dined here before and i expected more I guess give it a B+"

  • "The dining space had been remodeled and was very airy and attractive, with relevant decorations from its history as a lifesaving station. Excellent presentation and outstanding entrees - 1) Stuffed flounder and 2) sea scallops. Yum! Coffee afterwards was very good. Should have stopped there. I orderd the peach cobbler a la mode and although it was prepared and delivered in an attractive style, Its own liittle pan, the peaches were sour. Being October, I assume that peaches (at least the best peaches) were no longer in season. Overall experience was very pleasant however and we would return. We were already repeat customers."
