Diner Reviews
  • "Food was excellent as was the service. Lovely place."

  • "Three of celebrate the same birth date, so celebrating together is always the plan. Our turn to recommend the place: The Library was our choice & did not disappoint! Everyone in the group enjoyed their plates. The service was attentive without being intrusive. Everyone remarked that the noise level was wonderful & we had no trouble chatting together. Wonderful night all around!"

  • "My wife and I are from the midwest. We enjoyed the steaks immensely. Service was wonderful, attentive but not intrusive."

  • "We selected this place for a special occasion and we were very disappointed. The steaks were over done and difficult to chew. We have had steaks at other eating establishments that were less expensive and were more flavorful than at the Library. About the only thing that was enjoyable was the ambience. Would not recommend and will not go back."

  • "Restaurant week special ,good choices , pleasant staff, an historical, landmark, pub is special. But the music could be a little less noisy ..."

  • "Great service. Great drinks. The steak was cooked perfect. I would definitely go back"

  • "While a reservation was certainly unnecessary for lunch , It was perfect for an annual friends' catch-up. Quiet, good service, wonderful atmosphere in the old library with delicious salad choices .Very moderate pricing. Tip: If street parking, make sure you have quarters for the $1/ hr meters."

  • "If you are interested in having a great steak, this is the restaurant. Bring your appetite as the servings will fill you, no short pours with any of the drinks either. Service was perfect even on a very busy Thursday evening. Would I return? Yes and it is an excellent choice for meeting friends or business associates for dinning a delicious steak."

  • "All around excellent. Great food, great service and lovely atmosphere."

  • "Don't get me wrong; the food was phenomenal, especially the baked Brie, and the service was excellent. I only wish we had skipped brunch and gone for dinner. The library feel is wonderfully unique, but I feel it could only be truly appreciated during a nice evening out. Excellent wine list as well, only wish my visit was a little closer to 5 o'clock."

  • "Hadn't been for a while so time to bring back into rotation. Table was available at time requested. Food was phenomenal. We both had the lobster stuffed tenderloin. Melt in your mouth. Service was attentive--right amount if check ins."

  • "I love The Library usually. We went for Restaurant Week and I was not impressed with my food. The onion tart was good. That's all I can say about it really. It was caramelized onions in a nice puff party. The Brie wasn't evident. The beef tenderloin was not tender at all! And to top it off the lobster was cold and placed between the medallions. Which of course made the steak cold. Can't imagine the reasoning there... My spouse had the chicken with prosciutto and said it tasted like honey ham. He didn't finish and not because he was full. We will go again as we both love the place, but we have to say it won't be during Restaurant Week ever."

  • "Great ambiance. The old wood, the lighting, and the old books makes a great space. The food was tasty. Service was good. Will be having a small wedding ceremony and reception in their main dining room later this year."

  • "We love the food at the library and the waitress we had was wonderful. The building itself is historical and beautiful."
    Dined on 4/4/2014
  • "Both dishes were 20% over-priced. My wife's cod with lobster was very good. My lobster pie was disappointing . The lobster meat was tough and not sweet. The home style vegetables overwhelmed the dish. I was expecting a more traditional lobster pie. The ambiance was nice and our server was very good."

  • "Celebrating a friend's 41st birthday here on Saturday night. She is a steak lover but got a great re-education on the art of fine steak - including the Pittsburg style of cooking. Between the power-full martinis, a great bottle of wine, totally satisfying appetizers like bang-bang shrimp, PEI mussels, the steaks and sides (especially the mac n cheese), it was a 3 hour meat lover's visit to heaven. Great service by Kristen, not imposing and there where we needed it. She was fun to chat with and very knoweledgeable about the fixin's and gave us great advice. No pressure to hurry up....we owned the table for the evening. Thanks, Library for a great time and fantastic steaks! 2nd time here, will be back again for sure."

  • "The Library is a beautiful historical structure in which to dine. The staff is well trained, personable, helpful and attentive. We like the fact that side dishes are served family style and especially enjoy the giant salted crispy crusted baked potato and the lusciously green, Green Bean Almondine. Both are so delicious. I feel like Miss Piggy, but I always order the Rack of Lamb with has a wonderful juicy glaze. My partner enjoys the seafood options or sometimes orders one of the quality cuts of beef, that are always cooked to perfection. The Library is truly our favorite restaurant in the Portsmouth area. Try it. You will not be disappointed."

  • "This was our second visit and it was just a nice as the first. This is a special place with great ambiance and very good food. They have a nice wine selection and the waiter made a great suggestion. We enjoyed the Rack of Lamb and Filet's. The sides which are large and served family style are also great. The Mac and cheese was wonderful, made in house, excellent. Desert was equally good. We were a party of five and all of us enjoyed the Resturant...an exceptional evening!"

  • "I had the filet mignon. It looked mouth- watering delicious and it was! My husband had the sirloin. It looked dull and boring. He said it was good though. The garlic mashed potatoes were yummy. The salted baked potato was delicious, although a bit over done. The food was very good and we would return."

  • "The service is a little slow, we sat at our table for about 15 minutes before being created but other then that it was great our waiter was nice and kept our drinks full. The food was perfect great taste. We tried the filets with sides of asparagus, sweet potato fries and the Mac and cheese. The place is relatively small so depending who is dining there it can get noisy."

  • "The food as always was wonderful, it is a go to place for us when we are looking for a nice dinner out. The Waitress was a bit unfocused and the service a bit slow. We enjoy taking our time when eating out, it is about the experience as much as the food. However , the waitress seemed to disappear for long stretches leaving drinks empty, and our party of four wondering what was going on. We had split the check, and some items were charged to the wrong couple. Not a huge deal, but annoying. The left over sides we asked to be packaged up to take home. When we got home and looked at the container the next day, we only received a quarter of what we had left over. This was the most disappointing . We had paid for them, and wanted them."

  • "This is great place to get steaks but also very good seafood and nice appetizer selection , excellent sauce selection that you order as you like all made the way it should be. This place is a bit pricey but they definitely deliver the goods, I have always had a good experience there. Only complaint is that I can be a bit noisy there sometimes."

  • "Business dinner on St Patty's Day and we were treated OUTSTANDING by our server. His suggestions were talked through to ensure we each received an entree of our taste. Steaks were cooked to perfection."

  • "The Library is a great place for a special occasion, it's a beautiful space full of history, delicious food (from appetizer to dessert), wonderful service (attentive but not overbearing), every thing needed to make a special occasion truly special."

  • "We frequent excellent restaurants and were recently in the Portsmouth area. This restaurant exceeded our expectations...remarkable... Loved it..loved the food...I was amazed I loved the food so much. The ambiance was old world..refined.elegant..sophisticated."

  • "Went here for our 35th anniversary as it is where we use to go all the time when dating and first married. We have visited often through the years and thought it would be nice to go back to one of our "first loves." : ) It was nice to walk into a restaurant and find it feeling like home. Everyone takes such good care of you. The Library Restaurant is beautiful inside with the craftmanship from long ago. The lighting is perfect and waiter/waitresses are all very attentive. The food was excellent and we will visit again soon . . . nothing like going back to an old favorite and having it better than it was."

  • "Seated on time after a pleasant visit to lounge and friendly greetings. Then we were forgotten--No sign of wait staff for 25 minutes. Shrimp appetizers very good but special codfish entree over- cooked. If you desire med-rare prime beef, order med. Always give a new place two attempts to make good, but the Library will only get one visit; should know that a Saturday evening requires attentive wait staff and attention to details. Value for my money just not evident..."

  • "Everything about the dining experience was perfect. Wonderful, attentive service! The filet mignon was amazing. Honestly one of the best I have ever had. This was my second visit to the Library. Both times were equally great."

  • "My husband and I are pretty much regulars here for date night. We know where to go when we want a quiet, nice atmosphere, great friendly waitstaff and more importantly, Great Beef! Perfect every time. Their side dishes are scrumptious also. The wine list is quite extensive. As I've said before, one of our favorite restaurants to go for date night."

  • "This gorgeous restaurant should get out of the restaurant business. There were four of us having lunch together. Thank goodness I ordered an appetizer of Bang Bang Shrimp which we all shared because, although it was excellent, NOTHING else was even close to good. It wasn't really bad either, it was terrible! My only hope is that the chef was on vacation and is due back very soon."

  • "This restaurant came highly recommended, so I booked a reservation and brought my husband as a surprise. Upon entering, we fell in love with the building, it's coziness, and gorgeous architecture. We ordered drinks, salads, steaks, and creme brûlée for dessert. Everything was enjoyable, but comparable to other restaurants...nothing out of the ordinary. We did especially like the potato au gratin. The ambiance definitely made up for what the meal was lacking. Waitress was attentive but didn't hover. We had a very nice dinner in a relaxing atmosphere, and will most likely go back in the future. In the meantime we want to explore some other restaurants in Portsmouth."

  • "...that this is one of the best restaurants in Portsmouth. Just celebrated my husband's birthday there--romantic dinner--and as always, the Library delivers. The mood, the lighting, the superb waitstaff, and of course, the delicious food all contributed to a perfect evening out. Leave room for the chocolate cake--yes, they are one of the few restaurants any more that still have chocolate cake that has not been messed up by fancy names or weird concoctions on top of it--just good old chocolate cake, moist and delicious. Library, don't ever change! We love you just the way you are."

  • "The food was good, not great. The prices did not match the food quality. Very cool setting, They even bring your check inside an old book. I would go back for a special occasion Or a night out with my wife."

  • "I was very pleased with my choice in going here. The service was great and the servers very courteous. We made reservations for 8pm and our table was ready right on time. We got there a little early so while we waited we had a few drinks first in the lounge. The bar tender was quick and attentive, and there was a good choice of mixed drinks to choose from if you don't already know what you want. The food was great, the portions were well sized and I felt the price was fair for an establishment like this. It was definitely pricier that a chain restaurant but not unreasonable by any means."
