The Liberty TavernI have heard that LT is aI have heard that LT is a good date place, so while I'm glad my boyfriend and I were finally able to go, I wasn't totally blown away. The cocktails were very good and the mussels were absolutely delicious. My skirt steak was tasty, but I thought my boyfriend's orecchiette was lacking a bit in substance. Whether you're in the bar or the upstairs dining room, it is loud, so it is not the cozy, romantic place I thought it was going to be. Also, while I understand wanting to be attentive to customers, at times we felt a little smothered. At the start, we couldn't have a conversation because either the waiter or wine director (and rest. mgr) kept interrupting to explain the bread or wine selection (even though we said we were having cocktails)6/8/2013 12:00:00 AMVery accommodating, great serviceSome friends and I decided to make reservations here so that we could sit outside and watch the Air Force Cycling Classic's Clarendon Cup bike race, which has its first turn right outside the restaurant. The hostess and servers there were very accommodating with arranging the tables for our group of six to all be able to see the race. The food was excellent, with a large selection for brunch. In addition to that, our server (along with the rest of the staff) was great in ensuring we were always loaded up with coffee and water!
We had a great time, and we're hoping to make this an annual tradition!6/8/2013 12:00:00 AMNeed new water filtersWe had an overall great time. The only issue was, that their ice water was nearly undrinkable due to skyhigh levels of chlorine. They badly need to filter the water, as well as put filters on their icemakers to address this. I would hate to order a cocktail, only to receive a swimmingpool with bourbon in it...6/4/2013 12:00:00 AMLunchtime Surf & TurfWhile the introductory Pea Soup was outstanding, my buddy and I unequivocally had the best batter-fried haddock sandwich in the city. It had texture, subtle blending of ingredients and spice to boot, a fish sandwich that talked back when you chowed down.We were hard pressed to have to put it in the back seat, but the Primanti Brothers homemade pastrami took second; if you're not a fish lover or just have to have meat, it's The One. The fried egg topping a must!
For more fun have the kitchen split the two sandies and share - surf and turf in a phenomenal food extravaganza! Service as always stellar, focused, humored and to the point.
Wretched excess takes on new meaning, but Hey - what's wrong with that? GF6/4/2013 12:00:00 AMA Fabulous Anniversary DinnerWe had dinner at Liberty Tavern to celebrate our wedding anniversary. The restaurant knew about the special occasion, at least in part because my husband had some flowers for me delivered there. The manager and the rest of the staff went out of their way to make our evening a wonderful occasion, starting with complimentary sparkling wine for both of us (brought to our table by the manager) and ending with a candle in the dessert we shared. The food was great, as was the wine. Service was excellent: attentive but not too intrusive. We left feeling very happy--and full! We will definitely be back.6/4/2013 12:00:00 AMCreat Brunch! We have been to Liberty Tavern a number of times, but never for brunch. It was fantastic! Great selection on the buffet, all 3 of my very picky kids found something that they loved. In fact they asked to return every week for brunch!6/2/2013 12:00:00 AMCharming and goodWent there with a friend for an early Tues eve dinner. Upstairs, quiet and private. I was suprised at the quality of the food, everything is made in house (or so i was told). Service very good, we stayed for quite some time, the restaurant was very quiet. I would definitely go back.5/28/2013 12:00:00 AMAs always the cheese boardAs always the cheese board was great. Food was delicious and wine was yummy. We had excellent service.5/27/2013 12:00:00 AMUrban Chic!We love LT every time we go, the food is consistently good, the atmosphere is vibrant and lively, service is always excellent. We like to make regular visits to LT after the wreath laying with Wreaths Across America in December, and again on Memorial Day weekend after visiting Arlington National Cemetery. LT is very centrally located at the Clarendon Metro, but also not far from I 66 so it's easy for us Fairfax City people to get to. This is one of our favorite places to introduce friends to as well.5/26/2013 12:00:00 AMSunday brunchWe go to Liberty Tavern for brunch occasionally and are never disappointed. There is a good variety of food on the buffet line and it is always delicious. They have an excellent selection for vegetarians and others on a more restricted diet. The dessert selection is amazing. We will be coming back again and always take our out of town guests here for a great experience!5/26/2013 12:00:00 AMExcellentSuperb food and service. Very busy, but added to the vibrant mood.5/24/2013 12:00:00 AMGreat place. Food is consistentlyGreat place. Food is consistently good and creative.5/24/2013 12:00:00 AMAlways ExcellentThis is the best neighborhood restaurant in Greater DC. The food is always tasty, fresh, and presented well. The portions are generous. The prices are more than fair. Liberty is great for a celebratory dinner or just a night out of my own kitchen.
This place has it all. Wish I still lived in Clarendon.5/22/2013 12:00:00 AMGreat drinks, overpriced foodGreat beers on tap, interesting cocktails. Serving size for food was a little smaller than I'd hoped given the price. Service was fantastic.5/22/2013 12:00:00 AMGreat BrunchThe rest of the menu (for dinner or lunch) is also delicious, but I love the Sunday Brunch. It's a great spread of locally sourced food. Coffee flows freely. Brunch fills up quickly, so reserve early.5/19/2013 12:00:00 AMGreat Brunch SpotLiberty Tavern is my new favorite brunch spot. I'm not sure how many restaurants have house-smoked salmon on the buffet, but I'm guessing it's not many. The Sunday brunch is fantastic, with a great selection of salads, fruit, and the usual breakfast items. It also includes the aforementioned smoked salmon, fried chicken, and some great biscuits and homemade gravy with giant chunks of ham. The cheese grits are definitely my weakness!
Wait, did I forget the desserts? Homemade pop tarts!
I would definitely recommend reservations for Sunday, as it gets busy. Well worth taking the time to book through Open Table.5/19/2013 12:00:00 AMGood Enough for Joe Biden & MeI had been to Liberty Tavern before, at night and for lunch, so I was excited when told they had a good brunch. In addition, a few weeks ago, I saw VP Biden leaving the place. If it's good enough for Joe, it's good enough for me. It was very nice - good variety & quality, baked goods and desserts. Great bacon. My complaint: the tastes were a bit mundane. There was a spicy red cabbage slaw, but no other piquant flavor. Also, the very pleasant young fellow tending the meats (beef was a bit chewy, btw) who was unable to tell me what kind of sausage they had in the warmer. He said it was, "Normal." It was grilled and looked like it might be weisswurst. It turned out to be chicken, that was nicely grilled, but disappointingly mild.5/18/2013 12:00:00 AMSuperb food and serviceWe celebrated our daughter's college graduation recently on a Saturday night. Despite our large party size (10) and wide age range (6 to 80) the service was seamless. The food, as always, was inventive, flavorful, and well-executed. A new discovery for us was how great the special occasion cakes were (you can order in advance). The new season's menu always offers some interesting takes on old favorites. The wine list is varied and well-priced - not difficult to find a great wine at an affordable price. Hands down our favorite Arlington restaurant for any occasion. We'll be back often.5/18/2013 12:00:00 AMgood local restaurantGood food. Good service. A bit noisy but I assume some people like that.5/17/2013 12:00:00 AMGreat spotThe food was, unexpectedly, delicious. Ambiance very nice except for the noise which prevents intimate conversation. Parking can be a problem but usually can be found. Downstairs is a noisy bar but upstairs a surprisingly we;; decorated except for the closeness of the tables.5/14/2013 12:00:00 AMThe server was nowledgableThe server was nowledgable and made very good recommendations. the menu does tend to change from time to time - in a good way - but some favorites are usually there. The service was good, not too attentive but not too forgetful either. The food - fish and beef - was delicious.5/14/2013 12:00:00 AMComfort Food, Lively AtmosphereLove coming back to this reliably good restaurant. Service attentive but not obtrusive, food consistently outstanding, very attractive decor. Will be back and back again.5/12/2013 12:00:00 AMBusiness DinnerWe had a party of 8 for a business dinner. All first timers THOROUGHLY enjoyed our meals. We ordered appetizers, salads, entrees, and dessert. One thing I didn't personally like was the Strawberry Jam Tart, it was dry and nothing to wow about. Someone else had the carrot cake and it was divine! We had an outstanding server who had only started a couple of weeks ago, she was very knowledgeable about all foods and very attentive and pleasant! We vowed to come back soon!5/8/2013 12:00:00 AMConsistently GreatThe food and service are always great at Liberty Tavern.5/6/2013 12:00:00 AMGreat food and service but....The food and service were great, but I wish it was a little more quiet. The bar music/noise overflowed upstairs to the dining area. We left just in time, as the DJ was just starting play music and it was ridicuously loud. This started at about 9:45, so I am wondering if that is their way to get lingering diners out of the restaurant...it worked!!!5/2/2013 12:00:00 AMHad a business dinner andHad a business dinner and wanted to invite my guest to a place he'd never been before while making a good impression. He's a "foodie", but didn't want to travel outside of Arlington for the evening.
I decided that upstairs at Liberty Tavern would provide a vibrant enough atmosphere while still allowing us to speak easily.
We started with the bacon (basically pork belly) and it was marvelous. My Scallops over lentils with roasted beet sauce was TDF (to die for). The service was impeccable and attentive without too much hovering. My associate was duly impressed with our evening and will be returning with his partner next weeked to try other dishes! Thanks Liberty T!4/26/2013 12:00:00 AMBest local eateryAs always, The Liberty Tavern shines for menu diversity, quality, and service. Always impressed with the wait-staff knowledge of wines and cheeses. We love taking new visitors to the Tavern!4/26/2013 12:00:00 AMDinner portions are smallDinner portions are small for the price. But good food and variety.4/26/2013 12:00:00 AMSunday dinnerHad a very nice Sunday dinner for two. Standout is the gnocchi - and the fact that one of us st in the Barack Obama chair! Apparently he dined there in Oct 2011 and they put a small plaque in the chair where he sat!
House made breads are also very good.4/21/2013 12:00:00 AMOur group had a fantasticOur group had a fantastic time at brunch. The excellent service and delicious food exceeded all expectations.4/14/2013 12:00:00 AMHad a late dinner on SaturdayHad a late dinner on Saturday night with a group of 8. Our server was not very attentive as it seemed like he had quite a few tables but the food was great and there was something for everyone on the menu. The bar scene downstairs was lively and definitely added to loudness upstairs but made for a great atmosphere.4/13/2013 12:00:00 AMFirst visit to Liberty Tavern.First visit to Liberty Tavern. Lived up to its reputation. Very good food, friendly professional service, lively ambiance. Reasonably priced.
Will definitely return.4/13/2013 12:00:00 AMAmazing. Amazing food, serviceAmazing. Amazing food, service and atmosphere. This is my favorite place to go, take friends, and celebrate special occasions. Highly recommend brunch too.4/13/2013 12:00:00 AMGreat as always. We went toGreat as always. We went to celebrate my husband's birthday and they said happy birthday to him a couple of times and gave us a free dessert. We had chocolate cheesecake which was outstanding.4/6/2013 12:00:00 AMAmazingAbsolutely outstanding on every level. Andy, our server, was very friendly and knowledgeable. Food was fantastic! The only thing missing was the Pot de Creme i had been craving since the last time i dined there (lol)! It was amazing.4/6/2013 12:00:00 AMGreat Food! The pork chopGreat Food! The pork chop was recommended and was fabulous. The "industrial" margarita were great too!4/5/2013 12:00:00 AMGreat Food - Service needs ImprovemWe have been to Liberty Tavern several times, and the food is always fantastic, however this time the service was exceptionally slow. It took quite a while for the staff to offer us our first drink - nearly 30 minutes. After we had placed our order, another long wait ensued before our appetizers came out.
While I highly recommend the bacon salad and the short-ribs, it is too much for one person in one meal. The short ribs are amazing and should prioritized over the bacon.
Also on a Friday night, expect it be loud. It is OK for kids with the noise, they won't stand out, but it is much more a bar/restaurant.4/5/2013 12:00:00 AMThe service was wonderfulThe service was wonderful with outstanding recommendations that fit our group perfectly. Extremely noisy downstairs and some of that drifted upstairs to the dining room but, hey, it's popular so what do you do?4/4/2013 12:00:00 AMWe went for Easter BrunchWe went for Easter Brunch based on earlier reviews, and we weren't disappointed. Wonderful selection and friendly service.3/31/2013 12:00:00 AMBest Service I Have Ever HadThis is my favorite place to go for Sunday brunch! The food is amazing, and I love the buffet style set up. The best part about my experience this time was my waiter left the restaurant and went to CVS to get me a Gatorade because I was not feeling well. It made me feel truly valued and special. I will definitely be going back because I feel so welcomed every time I walk in and the food is outstanding.3/31/2013 12:00:00 AMThis Sunday Brunch buffetThis Sunday Brunch buffet hits on all cylinders -- the food, the coffee and cocktails, etc... For relaxed elegance spend Sunday here.3/31/2013 12:00:00 AMVery tender short ribs - overallVery tender short ribs - overall an excellent meal3/28/2013 12:00:00 AMFood was great as usual. GotFood was great as usual. Got the cheese platter again with waiter's picks and the short ribs w ravioli. Ravioli was to die for, short ribs were a bit chewy and gamey but the pasta more than made up for it. Finished up with the cream brûlée. Orange gel thing was a little overwhelming but it was off to the side so I was able to enjoy the cream brûlée without it! My friend's pasta dishes disappeared. He ordered 2 halves and was finished with them before I could take 2 bites.
The best part of this meal as always was our waiter Bryan. He always picks out great cheeses for the and is very timely and attentive with out being overbearing. He is great at describing platters and knows the menu! Kudos to him in a city where service can be subpar!3/25/2013 12:00:00 AMWe had a great brunch here.We had a great brunch here. The fried chicken is not to be missed. French press mild but nice change from your standard cup of coffee. Excellent service throughout our visit.3/24/2013 12:00:00 AMBrunch was fantastic! AttentiveBrunch was fantastic! Attentive servers and ridiculously awesome buffet. Get there before 10 - it gets crazy.3/24/2013 12:00:00 AMSunday Brunch Go-ToA group of 4 of us went for their brunch buffet on a Sunday. Tip: make it an early reservation! The crowds arrive around 11:00am, and while the staff does a great job of replenishing the buffet, the area doesn't allow for too many people to stand in line. The french toast is very popular, though my favorite is the mulled apple cider and lox spread.3/24/2013 12:00:00 AMBrunch at Liberty Tavern isBrunch at Liberty Tavern is really something to be experienced. The breakfast table brunch buffet is anything but standard buffet fare. The food is delicious, constantly refreshed and creative. The housemade Pop-Tarts were delicious and the spinach quiche was fantastic. I'm a vegetarian so finding things to eat at buffets can sometimes be tricky, but this was fantastic for vegetarians, carnivores and everything in between. Highly recommend.3/17/2013 12:00:00 AMThe food was good but it wasThe food was good but it was a little cold. And I didn't see the mussel in the white wine sauce.3/17/2013 12:00:00 AMExcellent spot for a businessExcellent spot for a business lunch in Arlington, VA. Great food, great service!3/15/2013 12:00:00 AMOur waiter was outstanding. Our waiter was outstanding. I've had him before when I've eaten at Liberty Tavern and I can't write enough compliments about him. Also, your manager on duty that day was outstanding. The restaurant was crowded with people enjoying brunch so there was a delay in seating us at the time we had reserved. He came over, asked if we would like anything to drink and then graciously gave me my "virgin bloody mary" on the house. He even refused my tip saying that I should add it to the tip for our waiter.
It's this type of superb customer service, combined with consistently delicious food, that keeps bringing me back to Liberty Tavern. And these are the reasons that I continue to highly recommend it to people.3/10/2013 12:00:00 AM
