A word from The Leopard at des Artistes
Located in the New York landmarked Hotel Des Artistes, and surrounded by the astonishing 1920s murals by Howard Chandler Christy, THE LEOPARD at des Artistes finds its roots in the area once known as “The Kingdom of the Two Sicilies” (mid 1800s) and in the culinary traditions of the regions of Campania, Basilicata, Calabria, Apulia, Sardinia, and of course Sicily, reaching a balance between dishes based on rural elements, such as pasta, vegetables, cheese, and seafood ingredients from the Costiera.

Lovely restaurant and wonderful classic food. Skews a little older -- not a young, hopping place. Delicious pastas! Had Dover sole, filleted at the table and wonderful, homey meatloaf. Beautiful desserts -- paper thin apple tart and decadent profiteroles. My "go-to" place in the neighborhood.

On a Friday night my wife and I stopped in for an early dinner before a show. The room was basically empty, but the hostess insisted on seating us at a small uncomfortable table next to the kitchen door. Waitstaff isn't the polished professionals whom were there when it first opened a few years ago. The food is still good but the bar drinks are skimpy and overpiced. We've been here a few times in the last couple of years and judging by the change for the worse and the lack of booked tables, my guess is Leopard at des Artistes won't be open for business too much longer.

Decided to look into a restaurant on the upper west side to get away from the chaos that was Midtown and the Theater district. We made reservations for after our comedy show at 9 PM and that seemed to be the PERFECT time to go. The dinner rush was just about ending and the noise level was just becoming from a roar to a somber level. Adrien was our server for the evening and he was very helpful and knowledgeable with the wine list for a perfect match with our dinner starters all the way through to our desserts. I would highly recommend this treasure to others looking for GREAT service and an amazing romantic dinner with your loved one or a small group of close friends to unwind after a show and not feel rushed to make a table turn over.

Seems to get better each time we visit. Caprese, octopus appetizers were excellent, and the swordfish continues to be a personal best choice--moist, well seasoned with just a bit of breading. If you're getting close to curtain time, can skip dessert; otherwise the chocolate soufflé is worth the few minutes' wait.

The restaurant still has the beautiful murals from the original Cafe D'Artists but lost its elegance and charm. The food was overrated. We ordered a risotto with lobster and artichokes. Couldn't see or taste either. The waiter said they were chopped into the risotto. We were expecting for the price chunks of lobster pieces. The veal milanese was uneventful. My pork chop was very good which I would expect for the price. Expected an upscale crowd as per the description. There was a table of 10 women near us celebrating something. Men wore jackets but it was noisy and the crowd look like tourists not locals. It was also uncomfortably hot. Interesting menu but not enough to bring me back.

We had an early dinner prior to our show at Lincoln center and really fell in love with the décor - it was so beautiful and soft. The minimalist design coupled with the murals provided for a beautiful setting. I ordered the grilled octopus and the bucatini with sardines - both of which were absolutely amazing and tasted like true homemade southern Italian cooking. My husband ordered the meatloaf - which he said was very good. The service from the time we entered until we left - was outstanding. We both look forward to eating here again!

I took two friends here for brunch because it was one of their birthdays. The service was unbelievably slow. Even though I told them I had tickets for the theater and had to be out in a little over an hour, the waiter stood around talking to other employees in an empty restaurant. I had to ask for the bill 3 times and when it finally came I was late. Worst of all, when I walked in I asked whether they could bring over a little dessert with a candle to celebrate my friend's birthday. I was told I could buy a dessert and they would do it (they should have just offered for free I think given the cost of the brunch). So, even though I didn't want dessert I ordered and paid for it. Of course it came without a candle! I was embarrassed. Because I was late for my show I had to leave before the others. I told the hostess about the mistake and just got a lame "sorry." I found out later they brought over another dessert for her after I left, but since I was paying for the entire lunch, I would have liked to have been there. I would NEVER go there again!

Another outstanding evening at The Leopard. Gathered some friends visiting from out of town and had delicious food from the Winter menu. Try the Tongue Salad or the Branzino. I had Rabbit (Coniglio) which was incredible but also tried the Lamb which was a taste sensation. I love the selections of sides and regional Italian dishes rarely seen on menus in New York.

We had dinner there on a Sunday night which was BYOB night. Needless to say, our bill was not near as much as it would have been on a regular night. We were so glad to see the beautiful murals again. It is such a beautiful space which makes dining there a pleasure. The food, especially the pasta with sausage and butternut squash, was delicious.

I recently took my daughter to The Leopard at des Artistes, fondly remembering my trips to the old cafe years ago, before she was born. The rebirth of this icon has been spectacular. This is no longer mere cafe dining; it is fine dining in a historic cafe setting. The service was superb; the food, narvelous, inspired by southern Italian cuisine but hardly bound by it. Notable dishes we enjoyed included a grilled octopus salad with celery potato salad and a ravioli stuffed with braised artichokes and burrata cheese, covered in a light tomato-majoram sauce. The cafe itself has been lovingly restored and brought into this centruy; the murals are in spectacular shape. The new owners are well-known for Il Gattopardo and Mozzarella & Vino.

This restaurant is cut above the better Lincoln Square area restaurants. The wines are great and so is the service. It is expensive and you need to ask the price of specials. A sole plate filleted at the table was to die for, but the price was $47., not mentioned by waiter.

For a usually quiet and pleasant restaurant, the noise level near the bar area where we were seated was terrible. I ordered the swordfish which was dry, overcooked and inedible - the chef should be ashamed to serve such food. In all fairness, the other two platters ordered were fine. Not up to its usual standard, not sure we'd go back again.
