A word from The Lark - Santa Barbara
The Lark pays homage to the history of California train travel and tributes the treasured and long gone Santa Barbara Fish Market, built in the 1920’s as a commercial fish processing plant, shipping their seafood products throughout the state by rail. With an imaginative yet approachable menu created by the gifted Jason Paluska, The Lark celebrates everything found around Santa Barbara County – wineries, farms, ocean and natural beauty.   • "It is a fantastic restaurant but you definitely need to book about a week ahead if you want a specific time. You can walk around either before dinner or after to all the wineries that are all adjacent or just take a stroll on the beach a few blocks away. The brussel sprouts are off the hook."

  • "The wedge salad & the brussels sprouts were GREAT with a nice red wine from Lompoc! Heavy reliance on savory bacon flavors made things seem salty, but overall 0K. Chicken was done nicely & was juicy. We could make a full meal of the Brussels & the Wedge & a bottle of wine but there are many more things we"d like to try! Glad to be on the patio, in the future will ask to be seated away from the parking area, as we were blasted occasionally by headlights and fumes (both from cars and smokers). Noise level was just fine for intimate conversation though. We look forward to another occasion to dine at The Lark! All of the servers were VERY friendly and attentive and that made our experience much more pleasurable! Thank you, Adria and Jim"

  • "I've been hearing about The Lark for months and months and finally got the chance to eat there. While the food was interesting, tasty, unique and very creatively served, several issues took away from our meal. First, as a 2-top, our seating was super tight with the adjoining tables. I could barely talk over their conversations and we were practically rubbing elbows with our neighbors. Second, service was very, very slow and it was not crowded. From food delivery to getting our check, the wait was painful. Third, prices are high for the amount of food. Call me old fashion but if two people (one a 16 year old boy) spend $120 for a meal with NO drinks but water and no dessert, you'd expect to feel full. Nice to try it, but won't return."

  • "We were expecting a fabulous dining experience on our last evening in Santa Barbara since the restaurant was recommended by a local we met. We were very disappointed! We read many positive reviews but we were not impressed. We read service was impeccable. We were warmly greeted and given an outdoor table as we requested. After that our waiter service was ho-hum. The crispy brussel sprouts were good but way too many on the plate! The house made pimento cheese was excellent. The duck liver mousse had too many competing flavors and we could not taste the duck liver. Crispy smoked pork belly only fair. Crab gnocchi was mushy with uncomplimentary flavors. Chef does not need to recreate the wheel. Overall too many competing flavors."

  • "We had an incredible first visit to Lark. Love the family style presentation. The food was truly fresh, delicious, with complex pairing of ingredients and the best of the season. It was perfect to try dishes to share. The waiter was warm and knowledgeable. Each dish was brought out by different wait staff describing the ingredients and answering questions. Excellent waitstaff! Food is fresh, interesting, all delicious with many flavors that intrigued us. Also, amazing wine and beer selection as well as a novel take on classic cocktails. I can't wait to go back!"

Generous portions that are great for sharing, the brussel sprouts of all things are my #1 fave item on the menu. The space itself is very cool, modern but still comfortable, like the kind of hot spot you'd find in a city like San Francisco or Montreal."

  • "We had such an excellent dining experience at The Lark. We were in Santa Barbara for a week and this was our one special night out without the kids, and it did not disappoint. Every dish was interesting without being fussy. When there was a miscommunication (we thought we ordered one steak dish and they brought a different one), the manager came right over and apologized and got us the correct dish. They were intent on making us happy. The ambiance is great, fun, warm, stylish. Can't say enough good things!"

  • "One of the best meals my wife and I have had in Santa Barbara. We visited from San Diego for the weekend, and as self proclaimed "foodies" this is the exact type of food, drinks and restaurant my wife and I always wanted Santa Barbara to have. We ordered the scallops, crab gnocchi, pork belly and brussel sprouts, all of which were fantastic. I plan on coming back here very soon. Make sure to try the pizza next door too at Lucky Penny for lunch. They have some of the best coffee and pizzas I have found in SB."

The portions of steak and seafood (octopus & scallops) were so incredibly small and they just placed it around the plate to make it look presentable.   • "Great patio dining. The goose liver bruschetta was wonderful--fascinating flavors. Forget the beet salad. Our courses came too quickly (especially the early ones) so we felt inundated rather than able to savor each dish. It was the first time we'd eaten with four people, so perhaps that was part of the problem. The crab ravioli was very expensive for the little dish and not noteworthy. Our dessert order was taken and served without an offer of coffee. We had to ask for it. We'll be back, but may approach things differently by ordering individually rather than as a group."

Had painful disruption in my gastrointestinals all evening-don't recommend starting a meal with popcorn and a pile of Brussel sprouts. Food looked like over ambitious attempt executed by excited young chefs which resulted in flawed presentation. Not a fan of deconstructing food particularly when you're splitting dishes with your table. Explanation of ingredients by waitstaff upon presentation of dishes is pretentious and interrupts conversation. Our waiter was a standout however. Truly knowledgable and professional while being personable and friendly. Carefully chosen wine list, excellent choices available by the glass. Good people watching. The hip new place to see and be seen."

  • "Every dish was beautiful--color, texture, and arrangement. We were four, including a 9 year old who loves seafood. We had oysters, octopus, scallops, wedge salad, broccolini, and the house-speciality, brussel sprouts. Simall plates are family style, perfect to share. Tastes were spicy, sweet, salty, etc., sometimes in the same dish. The 9 year old gives the restaurant 5 stars, especially for the spicy popcorn served instead of bread. The adults say 4 stars because although everything was tasty, we thought everything but the oysters overly complicated and overly described. Our waitress was wonderful!"

  • "We had heard wonderful things about The Lark. It is a very cool setting! Nice outdoor and indoor seating. The drinks were delicious. A little pricy, but very yummy! I loved the brussel sprouts! The rest of our food was only so so. Our octopus had a very bitter weird taste, but the staff was amazing and took it off the bill. I worked in the restaurant business for 20 years and these guys are pros in customer service! A+++! Although we had a miss on the food this time, I think it was just poor timing and perhaps poor menu choice. If you don't mind spending a little extra $$ for the ambiance, it is a very nice setting!"

  • "I know the word is way over used..but this place was. Awesome. Professional and attentive staff..to every detail..very creative and flavor able food. The must have dish is there dun gets crab/gnocchi..its a bit spicy and mixes great flavors together. It is a seasonal dish so get it while you can. Oh, almost forgot..they have a cool wine bar in the back with a patio..doesn't get any better. .to party after dinner. A really hip place."
