A word from The Lake House (formerly The Ranche Restaurant)
Perched directly above Lake Bonavista with large glass windows overlooking the lake, The Lake House is home to one of Calgary’s finest & most creative restaurants as well as a unique setting for private events & weddings. Exuding rustic elegance, the interior is illuminated with ornate elk antler chandeliers & a grand fireplace. Catching your eye when you enter is a glass encased wine cellar & a refurbished bar from the 1800’s, previously housed in a mercantile shop in Montana. Our wonderful location is complemented by Chef Thomas Neukom's celebrated Alberta Rocky Mountain cuisine. His offerings feature locally raised meats, game & vegetables from farmers & producers who share his vision for sustainable high quality & close to home cuisine. To augment Chef Neukom's Canadian focused cuisine, The Lake House provides a variety of wine from some of the world's top producers. Our passion extends to many regions of the world, as we have sought to find some of the world's best producers.Continued

  • "Lovely spot overlooking the lake. Very nicely decorated for the holidays. Daily quiche special so delicious. Good selection of wine. Great little gem for lunch or dinner."

  • "This my first time here since it moved from the previous location. As always the food was outstanding. The server was over worked and did not come by often enough. A large birthday party was beside our small table of 4 which made it difficult to have a table conversation. I would have liked to have been seated farther away from a group like that."

  • "The food is divine, the ambience is romantic and intimate, the service is excellent ....a wonderful dining experience."

  • "Went for lunch with friends twice in one week. The food was delicious. We had crab cakes and salmon quiche with salad. They do a special quiche everyday. Paired with a nice merlot was perfect. The two girls serving were very friendly and refilled your water regularly. Nice ambience. The Lake was sparkling like mini snowflakes very pretty. A bit pricey but well worth it. Would recommend to anyone."

  • "The Lake House should invest in some table cloths and anything else that will absorb noise. Because of the layout it is noisy. That being said, the service is good, the food very good and the overall experience good. My boyfriend and I dine out quite often (1-2 times per week) and usually go to our same favorite restaurants: Rouge, River Cafe, Ruth's Chris, Rush... (might be an "R" theme here). The Lake House is good, not great. We go and expect good food but noisy ambiance. If this is your one "nice" dinner out per month, maybe best to try some place else simply due to noise level and that it takes away from the ambiance. Otherwise, a solid choice for food and service. The view of the lake is very nice (unless it is dark out)"

  • "Yes "I like it" well sort of. The food was delicious however, the server was clumsy at best. At a Resturant of this level I would expect the staff to be trained. The reservation process and the hostesses were great. The decor was fantastic, the only complaint was how hard the chairs were after a few hours."

  • "We were excited to go to the Lake House for our first time. We were disappointed that we did not get a window table, nor did we get a table in the main dining room even though there were many still available. Instead we were seated in a side part of the restaurant next to a wall. Our server was very attentive and knowledgable. Food was very good. We had the oysters & crab cakes to start - the oysters were small but very nice. I had the salmon, which was really good. My husband had the bison which was good but not great. We will go back to the Lake House again but absolutely will be requesting a table by the window next time, as ambiance is such a huge part of the whole experience."

  • "My husband and I discovered the Lakehouse a few months ago when going to Calgary. We searched the internet as I often go to Calgary for shopping or various appointments and we tried it for lunch. The view of the lake is so beautiful and what a better way to enjoy a five star meal that looking at something so beautiful. We have been back a couple of times and plan on going back soon. We both love the food, and the service is top notch. Good to know we can keep coming back to the same wonderful restaurant."

  • "The Lake House fits the bill for a special occasion dining experience, however huge potential in both the lounge area & restaurant to appeal to residents in Bonavista and surrounding communities (Parkland, Willow Park) for a regular go to with a more casual menu that still maintains high calibre food product. Have lived in the neighborhood 20 years and would patronize this restaurant continually if the menu offerings changed, too fussy for a Friday nite going out with friends for a nice dinner - have never seen the space more than half full of customers."

  • "When my wife and I booked the restaurant for our wedding anniversary we were hoping to go back to what was our favourite restaurant in the city. Unfortunately, The Lake House is not The Ranche - the menu is different and not in a good way, the noise level was extremely loud and the experience overall left us feeling disappointed. Many of the great game items that The Ranche had to offer were gone or replaced with their poorer, more readily available items. The charcuterie board was acceptable but felt like it was made up from items from your local Co-Op. The duck breast was well prepared but the flavour was rather bland. The lamb was tender and very enjoyable. The service was prompt and attentive. A step above Keg but def not The Ranche"

  • "Ignore the look of the shopping centre parking lot. Once you enter the restaurant you in a world of both comfort and elegance. Incredible view out onto the lake with the house lights shining, in the distance, through the snow. Food is always excellent but the tenderloin special was particularly wonderful and our friend is still raving about the Duck. Staff is attentive without being intrusive. Love the fact you can also drop in and sit at the bar and order from either the regular or bar menu. Great restaurant."

  • "My husband and I stopped in for dinner before parent teacher interviews and were very happy we did. The steaks were wonderful and loved that they offered other game meats. The flavour pairings were wonderful and we will be going back soon!"

  • "We found the food was fine but not outstanding to warrant charging the prices they charged. Most of the wine was very expensive but it was served in the incorrect glasses. So we ordered a $60 bottle of wine. There appeared to be no dress code as several men kept their hats on - that is common in a pub - not a fine restaurant. Won't go back and when asked, I'll say it was very expensive."

  • "Friendly, accommodating, helpful, informed staff; genuine warmth. Superb window views over lake, yet not too cold, even seated beside windows (good insulation!). Great restaurant that doesn't overlook parking lot. Adequate handy parking. Extraordinary food. Well thought-out menu & wine choices; the fish platter to share has an exceptional range of tastes, each different & wonderful. Chairs comfortable for lingering over meal & drinks. Our only point of discomfort was the noise level; as older patrons, a room meant to sound "energetic" is distressing; we dislike having to yell to speak with the person beside us, or use sign language to communicate with the person opposite ---- & the room was only half full, early on Wed. evening."

  • "Went to the Lake House for brunch with a group of 10. Enjoyed coffee and Baileys and mimosas. Eggs Benedicy was delicious. Kids pancakes were filled with coloured chocolate chips which they really enjoyed."

  • "Amazing food although there used to be a larger menu.... Beautiful venue but dinber was cut short by the extremely noisy atmosphere. Need to have some type of sound buffets or plants to br all up the room. Table if three kids right beside is at the window. Constant running around and crying really dampened a romantic dinner carat kids by the front doir closer to the entrance so the parents can take them out when they are acting up. Have been a loyal "Ranche restaurant" attendee for numerous years and was disappointed by the evening left without dessert and went to another restaurant for dessert and after dinner drinks"

  • "We have dined at the Lake House 4 times. Our experience was excellent the first two times and poor the last two times. Service was poor - food was mediocre at best. it took so long for him to come and take our order after we had ordered our first drink that we were seriously thinking of leaving. They must have changed their chef because there was no originality in the menu The only thing that did not change was the price of the meals - still extreme. It will be a very long time, if ever, that I go back to The Lake House."

  • "The view from our window table was lovely & the food was very good. Service was perfect. Servers were always there just when we needed them, helpful & friendly. However, the close proximity of large tables of 8 to 10 people made any ambience disappear. We had to talk loudly & repeat ourselves to be heard. The room, which was beautiful, seemed more like a community hall due to the long, closely spaced tables."

  • "We arrived to the same location we'd celebrated our marriage 25 years earlier (it was the Inn on the Lake way back then) in excitement, but sat for a full 15 minutes with no service staff stopping at our table (they were whizzing past - seemingly ignoring us - while serving others). Our excitement started to wane as time ticked by and we sat, without so much as water, with our meals chosen. Finally, we just got up and left. We walked into Caesar's in Willow Park Village - without a reservation - and had a waiter cheerily greeting us and serving us water almost before we'd settled in our seats. Our 25th wedding anniversary celebration was salvaged with a wonderful meal at Caesar's!"

  • "Great meal again. Oysters were outstanding (as were the crab cakes). Wild boar shoulder was so tender it fell apart with a fork. My wife had the salmon and thoroughly enjoyed it. And what better way to close things off than by having the chocolate pot (?). And the service was outstanding....will definitely be back."

  • "I came here last night for my birthday dinner with my parents. We've been here before, and really enjoyed ourselves last time. The manager, Desiree, called to confirm our reservation and even remembered we were celebrating a birthday. Good start. Our server was lovely. She always made sure our water and wine glasses were filled, and was polite and attentive. The food was excellent as usual. I did not receive anything for my birthday and the hostess blamed me because I did not order dessert. I did not realize I had to order dessert to get any recognition for my birthday. The way she spoke to us left a bad taste, which is a shame as we love this restaurant."

  • "We both ordered quiche it was dry and over cooked. I have eaten here several times and never been disappointed. Prices are high for a light lunch also the wooden chairs are very uncomfortable. I am sure our lunch had been reheated--not what you expect at The Lake House. I would not recommend the restaurant highly based on our lunch!!!"

  • "Went here for our anniversary dinner. Not only were the staff extremely friendly and pleasent.. our server and the chef were both informed already about my allergies (Celiac / Lactose Intolerent). They were extremely careful and cautious in letting me know what I could and couldn't eat, and modified whichever entre I chose to suit my needs... VERY IMPRESSED! Will definitely come here again."

  • "We were a group of 4 and was celebrating 2 birthdays. They started us off with some complimentary bubbly and an appetizer. The mains were fabulous, our server was exceptional. Two of us had desserts and the other two coffee, but they still gave a some chocolate and fruit for the 2 that did not order a dessert. The desserts were devine as well. Finally when the bill came, it was accompanies with 4 macarons , perfectly made and with mint chocolate in the middle. Yum. I would go here again any day. Thanks, we had a great time."

  • "Good food, attentive but not overwhelming service, comfortable chairs and a great view. The noise level was a little high making it hard to talk until a couple of large groups left. Some sound deadening measures would be good."

  • "The restaurant was quite busy with a large group right down the middle of the restaurant, the noise level was unbearable. They were shouting at each other and so did everyone else have to shout to be heard. i wasn't sure why a group of that size wasn't put at the long table that is in the separate area. We literally had headaches when we left. The food was good, the service was good but I wouldn't recommend the place due to the noise level."

  • "We came with 2 friend (table of 4 with reservations). We were pleased to be given a table by the window and enjoyed the view of the lake on this sunny fall day. The server was fabulous. Very attentive but not annoying. Friendly and knowledgeable about the menu as we had questions. 2 of the diners really enjoyed the eggs benedict (one with salmon and one with the ham). Both dishes were excellent and beautifully presented on hot plates! A rare treat. one person enjoyed the breakfast has that featured game meats and the other had a simple ham and tomato sandwich with sides. The cappuccino coffee was lovely. We will be back."

  • "Far to noisy! We anticipated a comfortable dining experience and I definitely would return to try more dishes; but not on the night they are hosting a wedding. I suggest you ask if there is a special event before making your reservation. The curtain room divider does not even begin to disperse the cacaphony provided by the wedding party right next door. Romantic views, average/pricey wine selection, the cheese plate was by far the best (quantity and quality) we have had in the City."

  • "Excellent dinner (salmon with lobster dill mashed potatoes and wild boar shoulder with polenta were both so tasty). Menu has great variety with a good number of unique choices. The service was very good and I appreciated that I was advised early in the day of a large party happening that night in the main dining room which allowed me to reconsider or be prepared. The ambiance of overlooking the lake on a lovely fall evening was so nice as well."

  • "We went to the Lake House to celebrate a birthday. The food was amazing minus the hair in aioli. The server seemed more bothered that we told about it than its presence.(She did take 25% off the tab at the end without our asking) The restaurant is lovely, the chef talented, if not a bit expensive for the amount of food served. It was good for ladies, we were satisfied but I can't see a man filling up."

  • "If you want waterfront dining in Calgary your choices are limited. We were lucky to have a warm summer evening on the patio over the lake. Service was awesome, enjoyed the wine. I've dined at CRMR restaurants before and I'm never disappointed, but I felt the food wasn't quite up to the usual high standard this time. I would still go again and recommend it highly."

  • "The Lake House is, quite simply, a wonderful place to dine, whether lunch, brunch or dinner! The sun was shinning on Sunday for our brunch and the food did not disappoint. Perfectly cooked Eggs Benedict and also Steak and Eggs. Well looked after by all the staff, especially Jessica and Rebecca. Staff is well trained and attentive without being intrusive. A favourite spot!"
