A word from The Julep Cup
Tops Magazine | 2013 - Blake Hannon

...Then, there are places like The Julep Cup, which is intent on elevating it to obscenely delicious levels....Chef Lindsay’s specialty is infusing southern comfort food with a bit of French flair...She graduated from Le Cordon Bleu in Chicago and earned the Superior Cuisine Medal...in Paris, (France). This deft hand is evident from your first bite to your last...Now, the Julep Cup has evolved into one of best places in Lexington... As my colleague, photographer Keni Parks, nicely put it when hearing the dish’s description, “every word you just said I love.” I agreed, but words barely do this tasty entrée justice.
Everything about The Julep Cup, from what’s on the walls to what’s on your plate, will give you a feeling that you’re experiencing something both familiar and unexpected.

Diner Reviews
  • "A local shop owner recommended this restaurant and we thoroughly enjoyed it! The food, service and ambiance were all exceptional. One of the things we most enjoyed is there was a musician playing guitar and singing who was both a great performer and not intrusive of diner conversation. Perfect balance. When back in Lexington we would definitely return to The Julep Cup."

  • "I had the ky trout and it was good but the sides were not good, kale was bitter and burnt, potatoes tasted like cardboard and never liked the inside it is too dark --- it needs an update on the décor----I would go with med. tan wall and please get rid of those awful light fixtures on wall with feather things, change those out to nice brass fixture --- lighter brighter décor is much needed"

  • "After being in the restaurant and waiting quite a while for our drinks, we ordered our food. About 20 minutes later the waiter came to tell us the restaurant was out of fillet mignon. No suggestions, no solutions. Hey, maybe a ribeye cause that's the same, right? The manager never visited our table. My guest didn't want fish and so didn't order anything else. The food that was delivered was good, but clearly the service was not. The waiter was obviously inexperienced - I don't blame him for the fiasco. Clearly this is a management issue. I won't go back. Good food, odd ambience, DOA customer service. That's too much "nope" to bother with it again."

  • "I have never been disappointed. Have always enjoyed the specials. The menu items are always good. We like the Julep so well that we frequently dine with friends who have never eaten at the Julep. Invariably the newbies are pleased and I wouLd expect that they will return again. This time we again took friends who had heard of the Julep but had not dined there. We dined outside and it was lovely. Again all was good - 4 satisfied customers."

  • "As the title states best in lex!! We have never been let down... As we have at some of the other fine dinning restaurants such as Melone's and sal's . If your looking for fine dinning at its best you will love the Julep Cup.."

  • "We had a very nice dining experience while in town. Although the options for gluten free and shellfish free items to select from the menu were few at that time. I was happy with my meal. I ordered the salmon entree with noodles and vegetables in a light broth. I asked to exclude the noodles and was pleasantly surprised with the overall flavor and balance of my meal."

  • "We arrived super late, but the staff was super friendly. I have had some terrible dining experiences in Lexington lately. Julip Cup was on point. I had the feta crusted red grouper. It was amazing! New favorite place!"

  • "We didn't know what to expect our first night in Lexington ... but knew we were in very very good hands the moment the expertly made Mint Julep came out. The food was truly dreamy - perfect fried green tomatoes, sublime deviled eggs ... fried oysters in lettuce leaves with a kick of jalapeno! Amazing Hot Brown, local Berkshire Ham is to die for, and even our very picky daughter LOVED the (delicious) fried chicken. The staff made us feel at home - oh did I mention the great interpretation of Wedge salad with Grilled Romaine?! To top it off, don't miss the luxurious salt hand cleanser in the bathroom (for sale!) - we bought two jars.. If you love local food and creative twists, don't miss this place. Seriously."

  • "Waiter got our order wrong...two instances. The Julep Cup is a very fine restaurant. The food is outstanding. The ambiance is great. We had a very nice table inside (May 2014). First, my wife asked for the salad dressing to be provided on the side as she sparingly uses salad dressing. She got dressing on the side IN ADDITION to the salad being soaked in dressing. Second, I had ordered a salmon entrée, but I was brought a cod entrée. I frequently order salmon when dining out and HAVE NEVER ordered cod in my life so I know it was not a mistake on my part. The proper entrée was brought out promptly and it was delicious. Portions of the drinks and food are a decent size for the price. But, if we are ever back in Lexington we would return! "

  • "Our visit to the Julep Cup was a wonderful experience. Our server was very attentive and had a good knowledge of the menu and wine list. Our meal was delicious and filling. We will be back again and our out of town guests loved the horsey feel to the place."

  • "but it is usually very good. The service is generally very accommodating and friendly and the ambiance is nice if you want a more quiet atmosphere to converse. A harpist in the dining room was a nice, relaxing touch after a long week. "

  • "I haven't been back to this restaurant in several years, remembering a good but undistinguished experience; however, we were much impressed by an excellent and wide-ranging menu, excellent food preparation, a superb and reasonably priced wine menu, and excellent service. We're going to return much more often and enjoy this refined and rewarding dining experience. Our only minor issue was that "rare" steak was served "medium rare" and "medium rare" came out "medium". The tenderness and flavor of the meat dissuaded any complaints, but we'll "under-order" the doneness of our meat at this place in the future."

  • "Disappointed with Mother's Day brunch, had not been aware when we made the reservation that it would be the only option. Thank goodness there was an omelette station as that was the only appealing item-- but $90 for 3 plain omelettes made me miss New York prices! Their porch is lovely however, so perhaps a good summer option if one can order from the menu."

  • "The food on the buffet line did not compare to the past experiences I have had during a sit down meal here. I was not impressed with the flavor of the food and for $30.00. I will not be returning for the buffet in the future but would be happy to try another sit down meal again soon "

  • "We went prior to our daughter's graduation for a late lunch/early dinner (3pm). Food was excellent (Shrimp and Grits, Deviled eggs highly recommended). However, our server had apparently been called in to sub for someone who didn't show up and she was not happy about it and told us several times. She had no clue about specials or desserts and seemed like she was in a hurry to get us out. Other tables around us were certainly getting better service."

  • "The dining trip was a Business lunch with a client that was on a tight schedule. I think there was an issue in the kitchen because the service was slow. They had to eat fast & leave quickly. Good place for privacy to discuss business. The food was excellent and will return with proper planning."

  • "Great food, always unique presentations with creative flavors, service (Heather) did a great job, and the wine suggestion was perfect for our group. Thank you for a great evening!"

  • "We ordered a bottle of wine with our dinner. Twenty minutes later the server came back and said they no longer carried the wine. We picked a second bottle. Twenty minutes later the server brought a different bottle which was much more expensive and would have opened it had I not noticed the difference. He went looking for the original second wine and returned saying they did not have it. Our food had arrived by then so we gave up on the wine. The food was very good. "

  • "Great food, drink and great service. Our party of 10 spent 3 great hours remembering 40 years of memories!!!! Great Hot Brown, Shrimp & Grits and bring a big appetite if you order the fried chicken, which is excellent! One of the best filets in Lexington too!!!"

  • "The flavor of the food was good but the portion size was ridiculously small. My husband ordered the shrimp and grits entree which cost around $20.00. It doesn't come with any sides and it only has 5 shrimp and maybe three spoonfuls of grits. He had to eat half of my entree to feel like he had enough dinner. "

  • "My daughter and I stumbled across The Julep Cup on an equestrian-themed visit to Lexington several years ago, and gave it a try. We were so impressed by the food and the gracious, helpful service that we have made it a point to eat there every visit since, and now bring friends and family. The rolls are delightful (always a good sign), as is the grilled romaine salad, and all of the entrees we've tried have been exactly on the mark for Southern comfort food-meets upscale dining: shrimp and grits, salmon croquettes, fried trout, perfect fried chicken, and wonderful steaks. The ambiance is great for horse lovers, without being over-the-top kitchy. I love the deep red walls, and the comfy seating. Oh, and do NOT forget dessert! "

  • "Ate there last night with a group of friends. Both the food and service were excellent. I had the filet, which was perfectly cooked and melt in your mouth tender. Had macaroni and cheese as a side which was wonderful as well. I was there with a group of seven, and everyone loved their food!"

  • "Really enjoyed the ambience and menu. Only disagreeable thing was the service. While our waitress was pleasant, I'm not certain she had any experience. She said some inappropriate things, and was inattentive to our needs. LOVED everything else about our visit and will definitely try again."

  • "Dinner was great! I wasn't expecting the quiet atmosphere. The Julep Cup was very slow on the friday night that we were there, but my friend and I enjoyed our pre-race experience. It was nice to be in a relaxing environment and the unexpected Jazz music was fun! I would return here!"

  • "Julep Cup's menu is Southern in concept with many delightful revisions to add surprise, and Southern in hospitality. Its interior furnishings, lighting and table arrangement are intimate, and its staff warm and personable. In addition to the excellence of its kitchen, the portions are generous without sacrificing presentation. The experience is kind of like eating at Grandma's...if Grandma were a five-star chef. Another HUGE plus was live music during the main dining hours. A sultry singer, a great jazz man on the keyboard, and the occasional guest from the audience really made the evening sing. We'll be back!"

  • "The food was excellent, we especially loved their deviled egg appetizer. The atmosphere is warm and inviting with downhome hospitality. They had a 3 piece band playing folk music the night we were there. All in all, a wonderful experience."

  • "The night we were at The Julep Cup we were the only diners in the dining room. The Julep Cup needs to advertise more, do something to attract more patrons. The food is always good, service has been sketchy over time but was very nice this time. We don't want to lose this neighborhood restaurant but too many folks don't think of the Julep Cup when they are making dinner plans."

  • "This place has the best fried chicken i have ever had anywhere. I've told people this and they say "well you should try this fried chicken." I've tried them all and this stuff is still the best. I've had it three times now and it is consistently the best i've ever had. The mashed potatoes and gravy and green beans that come with it are pretty damn good too."

  • "We made reservations in advance as we were in town from Columbus, OH for the weekend. We eat out A LOT! Quite possibly the best whole meal we have ever had! From apps, to drinks, to the main event...good was top notch. The fried green tomatoes were unbelievable! Service was impeccable, too!"

  • "The food was great. Our party of two had the beef and the southern fried chicken. Both excellent. The ambience was great for a Friday night out. I had coffee. I wasn't impressed by the coffee, very bland. Our waitress had a slightly odd approach but she was fine. We will return most definitely."

  • "Daughter is a UK freshman - our 4th visit to JC. Prior meals were outstanding; not so this one. Wife and I with our two teenagers seated promptly for 8pm reservation but 10 minutes before Taylor arrived with menus and a wine list. Asked for a bourbon list - 10 more minutes. Chose a bourbon and bottle of wine. Bourbon served but after 10 minutes learned they didn't have the wine. Chose a different wine and later learned they didn't have that one either. Third pick was in inventory. Food was delicious and interesting as usual. Son's first and second courses were not what he ordered. Both kids' birthdays - asked for something with dessert (candle?). Nothing. Will give Julip Cup another chance but trying other Lexington restaurants first."
