A word from The Joel Palmer House
Mushrooms are the heart of what we do at the Joel Palmer House. We have always endeavored to obtain seasonal and local ingredients and we use many locally produced greens, herbs, and vegetables, some of which come from our own culinary garden. We are frequently inspired by ingredients found in the cuisines of France, China, Thailand, Poland and India, so we call our cooking "freestyle." Our dishes pair well the celebrated wines of Oregon, especially Pinot Noir, Pinot Gris and Chardonnay. Our extensive, Oregon-focused wine list has been awarded the Best of Award of Excellence from Wine Spectator. Of special note, The Joel Palmer House ranks as one of Oregon's finest historic homes and is on the National Register of Historic Places and the Oregon Historic Register. Built in 1857, the house is Dayton's oldest standing structure. When weather permits, guests can enjoy their dinner on our outdoor patio, soaking in the last rays of sunshine in the heart of Oregon Wine Country. Continued

  • "Everything about this restaurant was great. Beautiful old house, friendly/attentive wait staff, great wine list and perfectly presented meal. If you like wild mushrooms you should not pass up a chance to eat here. I do not often find a restaurant that surpasses its positive reviews but the Joel Palmer House did. If you are on a tour of Oregon's wine country or just in the area don't miss this place."

  • "The emphasis on mushrooms was evident in nearly every dish offered and the quality of both food and service was absolutely top notch. The price level is also very high."

  • "We went for a birthday celebration. The food was exquisite, beautifully served and quickly inhaled. This is mushroom nirvana!! The house soup is like silk --- truly divine. Cannot wait to return and be pampered again and again."

  • "We returned to the Joel Palmer House to celebrate our anniversary. After packing all day to prepare for a long weekend in Oregon wine country, and a two hour drive, we just made it in time for our reservations. Arriving in traveling attire, we were treated as if royalty with the most attentive and gracious service possible, in spite of our appearance...Everyone from the host to the servers and Chef Chris came by our table to greet and treat us with an array of delicious courses from the special Mushroom Sunshine menu. Between courses, there was incredible homemade sourdough bread, and surprise chef offerings of a most flavorful carrot cannell and a shot of melon/ tomato puree...yum! Try the house pinot-delicious! An unforgettable night!"

  • "Wife had the beef stroganoff, I had the Elk loin. What an amazing meal. Ranks up with the best, anywhere! Highly recommended. Plan on $150 plus wine for 2."

  • "Food was fantastic and flawless, but the service was even more incredible. Our main waiter (cause there were a few) was nothing but amazing! I can't believe that an in-town big restaurant hasn't stolen him yet! The bartender comes to your table and formulates an entire drink scheme for you! Wonderful experience. Prix fixe meal w gratuity included. But well worth it!"

  • "Food was fantastic Country style fine dining, Service was awkward for that caliber of restaurant, Building was beautiful and cozy. Bread pudding best I've ever gas and mushroom soup was decadent."
    Dined on 3/22/2014
  • "The JP house was a unique experience - although their wine list is inflated for the cost of what you can get right next door at some of the wineries (look into a corkage fee instead), the 3 course meal is worth the visit. Prepare for mushrooms!"
    Dined on 3/22/2014
  • "Excellent food. Having previously sampled their Mushroom Risotto at Methven Vineyards, we knew we had to have a meal here. The essence of mushrooms comes out beautifully in the food. Can't wait to go back."
    Dined on 3/18/2014
  • "The Joel Palmer House focuses on mushrooms, and we thoroughly enjoyed the 6 course meal featuring mushrooms in a variety of preparations (including a little molecular gastronomy for the foodies). Chef Chris stopped by each and every table to see how they were enjoying their meal, and the wait staff was very attentive. Overall, it was a great dining experience."

  • "Four of us had a fabulous dinner at the Joel Palmer house. The service was impeccable, the cocktails were delicious and our meals were exceptional. This is a great place to celebrate any special occasion, you are treated like a rock star from start to finish."

  • "I would be surprised if this restaurant does not mushroom."

  • "This is the second time I've eaten at The Joel Palmer House and it was as delightful as the first. The staff is extremely friendly, but not intrusive. We had Christopher's Mushroom Madness which was exciting and tasty. Each course had its own unique favors and danced on our tongues with each bite. The sturgeon was exceptional and delicate and the Filet Mignon was succulent. There was plenty of food with the five courses and our two hours and fifteen minutes of dining heaven was the perfect way to start our anniversary weekend."

  • "My wife and I have had our eyes on this place for years but never took the leap until this past Valentine's Day. What a joy. The service was excellent, the food was fantastic, and the ambiance was wonderful. I live in Salem and work in Portland, and am an avid foodie. Suffice it to say, I can now claim one of my favorite restaurants in "Salem" is now only 20 miles away (the drive to Dayton is beautiful no matter where you're coming from). And sorry Salem; Applebee's, Red Robin, and Sonic aren't considered dining destinations..."

  • "My wife is vegan and they took extra effort to make sure her dining experience was as good as mine. We had emailed them our reservation with the note about the food request and they honored it right away. The between food treats like the carrot tartar and gazpacho was excellent. Staff was friendly and efficient. Very good experience."

  • "Valentines Dinner We've lived in Dayton for 13 years and this was the first time we went there for dinner. Mostly because we haven't been able to get in because it was booked. My family and I enjoyed our special night on Valentines Day. The food was succulent, the service was wonderful and it was indeed a special evening. We preferred to have a bottle of sparkling cider and the restaurant was able to accomodate that. All in all was a wonderful dining experience!"

  • "Joel Palmer House is a true destination restaurant. Great food in a setting that transports one to a country inn in France. Each dish was masterfully executed and delivered with unobtrusive but attentive service. Wine selection is unparalleled for Oregon Pinot Noirs."

  • "Great food! Extremely attentive staff. My wife and I had a delightful evening and will be back. I definitely recommend this restaurant."

  • "We chose to go before Valentine's Day when it would be more relaxed & took advantage of Chef Chris' Sunshine Mushroom menu. 'The service was impeccable. The food was outstanding. My husband was "gaa-gaa" over his dinner- it is rare for him to swoon over food! Steve had Joe's Wild Mushroom soup, & the Stroganoff, & the Chocolate Mousse w/ Blood Orange Sabayon & pecan nuitte for dessert. I managed to get 1 sm taste of mousse. He ATE it all! I delighted in the Matsutake Chowder, Angel Hair Pasta & PearTart Brulee. This is as good as it gets! We thoughly enjoyed our dinner. Wait staff is attentive & knowledgable. A delightful find in Oregon's Wine Country!!! Be sure to go, you will be enchanted and delighted!"

  • "This was our first visit to the Palmer House, and well worth the drive. Everything here was perfect. Courteous and attentive wait staff, a visit from the chef/owner. The spectacular fois gras, and all of the pairings with white truffle powder and black truffle. Your tastebuds will be delighted with creamy mushroom chowder, a perfectly made melt in your mouth filet mignon, the pear brulee or soufle style bread pudding were spectacular just name a few of my favorites. Come hungry, this place lives up to it's reputation."

  • "What a great place to go and really be a "Pinot Noir Wine Geek". Don't worry, you'll be amongst friends. The food was brilliant! The chef's tasting menu was all that we needed to look at and then add foie gras to the steak (PERFECTION). As for the wine, their list of "orphans" meant getting great wines at a great price in a 5 star restaurant. What a great idea!!! The service was spot on and the wine service was impeccable with grape specific stemware. We are certain to be back the next time in town!"

  • "My husband and I tried the restaurant based on some reviews, and were delighted at the quality of the food, the wine list of local wines, and the impeccable service. The location is a bit out of the way, but well worth the drive for a quite romantic experience that you won't regret."

  • "Wonderful meal, great service, excellent wine list, if you like mushrooms this is a must go to restaurant."
    Dined on 1/25/2014
  • "This is such a lovely place for the mushroom lover, even without the 'mushroom madness menu'. The sturgeon and fillet mignon were outstanding. This is the restaurant in the Willamette Valley for Pinot Noir - many small producers and great verticals."

  • "The Joel Palmer House is by far the most elligant dining experience we have had in a long time. The ambience and delectible food choices were the very best. The location is quite charming, the service was outstanding and the friendly servers were much appreciated. We highly recommend this restaurant. However, with this great review comes a price tag. It is not cheap."

  • "Our previous experience at JP's was in Oct for my husband's birthday. We had such an enjoyable experience that we decided to return for my birthday after Christmas. We were disappointed. JP's has a limited menu, which normally wouldn't be an issue...but they hadn't changed it. We were presented with the same chef's menu, and the same a la carte menu as previously. With a limited selection like this, we will not be going more than twice a year. Also, the service this time was not as attentive, and it was very rushed. As soon as we placed our last bites in our mouths, our plates were taken away. We hadn't even started chewing yet. Lastly, no acknowledgement of my birthday was made, even though my husband noted it in the reservation."

  • "One of the finest restaurant in Oregon. Their specialty is mushrooms, and mushrooms from Oregon at that. Great food right in the middle of the North Willamette wine country. Thanks!"

  • "We were spending a night in the wine country and decided to treat ourselves to a meal at the Joel Palmer House, on a friend's recommendation. It was such a wonderful meal - the food, the wine, the service, the whole package - fantastic! My husband is gluten and dairy free and they were very accommodating to his needs. I had the family-recipe beef stroganoff, which was one of the best dishes I have ever had. And the somalier recommended a delicious bottle of local pinot noir that was both excellent and affordable. Thanks to everyone at JPH for such a wonderful evening!"

  • "This restaurant is special partly because of its impeccable service--quietly attentive. The food, mostly local, is carefully prepared and elegantly served (and your waiter can tell you exactly what's in every dish). The wine list provides plenty of variety, both of types and prices, and the sommelier will help you make a good choice for your meal. The mood is friendly-elegant, formal without being stiff, relaxed without being unbuttoned. The Joel Palmer House is our go-to place for any special occasion."
