A word from The Joel Palmer House
Mushrooms are the heart of what we do at the Joel Palmer House. We have always endeavored to obtain seasonal and local ingredients and we use many locally produced greens, herbs, and vegetables, some of which come from our own culinary garden. We are frequently inspired by ingredients found in the cuisines of France, China, Thailand, Poland and India, so we call our cooking "freestyle." Our dishes pair well the celebrated wines of Oregon, especially Pinot Noir, Pinot Gris and Chardonnay. Our extensive, Oregon-focused wine list has been awarded the Best of Award of Excellence from Wine Spectator. Of special note, The Joel Palmer House ranks as one of Oregon's finest historic homes and is on the National Register of Historic Places and the Oregon Historic Register. Built in 1857, the house is Dayton's oldest standing structure. When weather permits, guests can enjoy their dinner on our outdoor patio, soaking in the last rays of sunshine in the heart of Oregon Wine Country.

I had the pleasure of enjoying the Joel Palmer House with three of my fellow wild mushroom mavens on November 20th. Being from out-of-town, dining at the restaurant has been on our wild mushroom bucket list of "must-do" activities for all things 'wild mushroom' for the last couple of years. We eagerly anticipated our dining experience but decided to arrive in the Dundee Hills area earlier in the day to experience the much heralded "Pinot Noir" country. To our delight, it was a fabulous day of wine tasting that was capped off with an outstanding dinner at The Joel Palmer House. We definitely plan a return visit to continue our experience of enjoying excellent wild mushroom cuisine. And of course, more Pinot Noir!

I rarely go out of my way to write these open table reviews, but all four in my party (and we would consider ourselves somewhat accomplished "foodies") felt this was one of the best meal experiences each of us have ever had. If you like mushrooms, this meal will blow your mind and take too places you never thought food could. Kudos to an incredible meal and a knowledgeable, friendly, attentive staff with the perfect complimentary wine list. A first class operation all around.

We have been coming here for 20 years, anchoring a trip to Pinot Noir country. It has evolved over time, mostly for the better, but maintains its mushroom base for cuisine and its wonderful wine list. The sommelier has picked about 20 wines that she favors, making the list manageable. There's also a list of wines they are almost out of, the "orphans".

The Joel Palmer House is a wonderfully eccentric restaurant, situated in a delightful old house, in the heart of wild mushroom country -- and wine country. Besides picking its own mushrooms, it obtains the rest of its superb ingredients locally. The famous mushroom tart starter is to die for; mushroom soup is in the same league. The elk main course was amazing. Don't miss the foie gras (whole, not paté). Wine choices are plentiful and outstanding, with an emphasis on top flight Oregon producers. Service matches the rest of this restaurant's highly rewarding performance. Don't miss it if you're anywhere in the vicinity.

If you like wild mushrooms, this is the place for you. Mushroom soup, mushroom tart, mushrooms with entrees, etc. We loved all the preparations. The wine list is very intensive, including a number of the 'great eight' Pinots, like the Ken Wright 2008 Guadalupe Vineyard Pinot. Save room for the Hungarian rum cake for dessert.

We enjoyed our dinner very much, sampling the vegetarian tasting menu after being reassured the portions were small. We love what the chef does with mushrooms! Our only complaint is that the portions were in fact generous and we could not finish much of the pasta course not dessert. If we returned we would order the three course meal. Excellent and gracious service.

Excellent food in a lovely setting. We are avid mycophiles, and would have enjoyed more dishes that showcased a single species. The servers were very attentive without hovering. However, they didn't know much about what mushrooms were included in most dishes. We would have enjoyed knowing what mushrooms we were eating, and perhaps where they came from. There are so many delicious mushrooms available this time of year. More information would have been interesting and educational.

The Joel Palmer House lived up to most of my expectations, you have a choice of outside seating or inside seating. The inside seating is very cozy, romantically lit, and very rustic feeling. The outside seating is nicely spaced out, they have propane heaters to keep you warm, and it has a very backyard feel. When they come to take your order they are very up front about the fact that you have to have everyone in your party order on the same side. There are really two choices, the small 3 course and the large 5 course you don't really get a choice of what is on the large course. Overall this was a great experience. The food was a great experience with all the different plates we were served on the large menu. We will probably be going back.

We loved entering the more than 150 year old house and being seated in the old parlor. We were then given an extensive wine list, where we chose something from the region that we hadn't heard of before. The server was sweet and knowledgeable and helped us with recommendations. However the key to our experience was the food. Not only did it look pretty when it was served, but it tasted delicious! My fillet was amongst the best I have ever had, and when paired with the wine...it was just divine! We finished out meal with the their blackberry bread pudding which was so moist and tasty. We left incredibly satisfied.

If you have never had Sturgeon before this is the place to try it. The Chef does an exceptional job with this ancient fish. Melts in your mouth. Wine list is one of the best and service is also exceptional. Hard to find great service these days. Perhaps the overstated Fodor's recommendation raised expectation too high, but the food was overly salty, service was slow, and the featured items presented no gustatory delights nor surprises. The wine list was impressive, and typically overpriced. At a restaurant at this level, one would expect the servers to be better trained as to appropriate serving and removal of plates. We wished to try a good Oregon Pinot Noir, but the recommended wine did not pair well with any of the dishes. For dedicated "foodies," this would not be a restaurant to warrant the "must experience" publicity.

This restaurant reminded us of the country inns in VT or the Berkshires. It's very cozy but sophisticated. There are several small dining rooms on the first floor of a large house. On the evening we were there they also had tables set up on the patio and back lawn. The menu emphasizes wild mushrooms (but there are some items mushroom free is you're not a fan..). There were three types of prefix-fixe menus, with the main one offering several choices for each course. Everything we had was delicious, including mushroom soup and mushroom tarte, sturgeon, and the cheese plate we had for dessert. The service is very nice also. Just a very nice place to go for a nice evening out.

Charming setting. Quaint interior. You feel like you are being served in someone's private home. Food is incredible! All dishes highlight the primary ingredient and enhance it with subtle and delicate flavors. Each plate is presented as a beautiful piece of food art; lovely to look at and delightful to savor. The service is attentive, without being ever present; a nice balance. The Mushroom Madness Menu is a wonderful way to taste many of the exquiste dishes; what a creative idea. The Joel Palmer House is what "dining" is all about. Soups-delicate, silken on palate; Mushroom Tart-pastry tender, filling earthy; Sturgeon-moist & sweet with roasted Brussel Sprouts, great match; Elk Ribeye, med rare-tender & demi-glace rich, meaty flavor.

If you love or like mushrooms this is a place o go for dinner . The Mushroom tart was to die for and the soup was wonderful. There is a small selection of entrees. Everyone had something different and it was enjoyed by all. The Beef Stroganoff was absolutely divine, as was the quinoa cakes, a first rate vegetarian dish. The endless supply of great read was a treat. We had an issue with the first bottle of wine and it was replaced. Though not without some discussion. The deserts were very good and varied. Service was very good though in the middle of the meal it seemed to slow down. It is great that the chef owner comes out and talks with the customers. We would go back again.

Dear Sirs, I am from Norway + invited friends from McMinnville to my birthday (receipt 2618/table 0-2-1, 6 guests ), I have a bitter aftertaste when reviewing the bill which I paid on good faith and without having my glasses on. These 2 issues: 1) I cannot recall that we had 2 bottles of wine ( one child + two drivers in group), 2) On the given bill I added service addition, from USD 523,92 up to USD 600,00 - but I was not made aware that the USD 523,92 already included 18% service charge, thus spending it twice. I somehow feel this should have been told to me. that's the reason why I gave the service a lone star ( poor ). Otherwise the service was very good, friendly and competent. Hope you review my issue above, thanks . Klaus Radenbach

Food is great, but we won't go back for the following reasons: They have nice mushroom price fixe menus and a vegetarian version, but everyone at the table has to order from these menus in order to get it. Also, there are a handful of servers covering all of the tables, so there is no personalized service. We waited 40 minutes for our dessert course. 18% gratuity is added to bill, regardless of table size, so there doesn't seem to be incentive to provide good service.

We were given the choice of indoor or outdoor dining. We chose the outdoor. Beautiful lawn and gardens. We started out with a foie gras appetizer. Excellent flavor. Then came the house special of wild mushroom soup. It was the greatest. The wife chose the beef strognolf. Creamy sauce, full of wild mushrooms, and very tender beef. I choose the elk ribeye. It came sliced like duck breast. Perfectly cooked, med. rare. Beautiful mushroom reduction. Sides were radish, carrot , and mushroom risotto . The wait staff were excellent, knowledgeable. The wine list was extensive, but we choose the local wines. Overall a great dining experience.

Wonderful food, beautifully presented, but way too much for us. Because the food is very rich and we ordered elk and stroganoff, we were uncomfortably stuffed afterwards. I know, our fault. We typically eat small portions and could have easily been satisfied sharing one order. If an ala carte menu was an option, a salad with the fabulous mushroom soup and our bottle of Pinot noir would have been perfect. Oh yeah, plus the shot of bicolor gazpacho -wonderful; and the bread; and the creme broule... See the problem?

The menu on 8/26/2014 was all about celebrating the local mushrooms. The soup was savory, the mushroom tart was flavorful and the filet was tender. The angel hair with mushrooms and lobster was dressed with a delicate creamy sauce. The artisan cheese plate rounded out the meal nicely. Extensive wine list. The desserts were interesting. The restaurant is located in a house dating back to around 1857. Very romantic. It is a great value at $49 for a three course meal. Had a nice birthday dinner.

The service however was confusing to say the least. We were waited on by 6 separate servers at different points in the evening so it was hard to tell if anyone was even monitoring the progress of our meal. Had to flag down staff twice to get another glass of wine and the last three courses on our six course tasting menu were spaced about 25 minutes apart which is way too slow for a tasting menu. There were only 3 reds by the glass on the menu and they ran out of my selection after my first glass. They did comp a replacement that was nowhere close to what I ordered.
