A word from The Jacobson
"If Picasso or Rembrandt wanted to grab a bit in KC, the food and atmosphere at The Jacobson would make them feel like they were back in front of an easel." -Alex Kluesner KC Magazine

Like paint to a blank canvas, The Jacobson, or "The J" for regulars, transformed a 4,000-square foot warehouse into a modern restaurant and bar in the heart of the Crossroads Arts District. Staying true to the surrounding culture, its walls are bedecked with paintings from local artist and its one-of-a-kind heated patio and full service bar is anchored by a two story sculpture by KC's own Stretch.

A glance at The Jacobson's variety of contemporary American cuisine yields a collection for meat lovers, vegetarians and vegans. Much like an artist who draws inspiration from his or her own environment, diners in search of muse are encouraged to mix and match tastes when ordering appetizer & entrees from the Mingle & Center Stage sections of the menu.

Diner Reviews
  • "The service was fast and efficient. I always like it when a manager or owner comes to the table to greet us and that happened tonight. The food was REALLY good and I was stuffed when I left. The leftovers were just as good the next day."

  • "This was the first time I have been to The Jacobson. It was great food! All I have to say is positive feedback. I had the seafood medley (or something like that) it was great. I also took a chance on a drink. It sounded like a hangover in a glass, but the server assured me it was good. She was right! The lemon tart was also great, not too sweet, not too tart. All around a great place...I'll for sure be back!"

  • "Decent place to grab a bite to eat. Was fairly pricey for grilled chicken and steak. But worth the money. We will be going back. We sat in the back corner, it was a tad loud but our seat location made it very intimate and romantic. Drinks were very pricey, even for downtown. Wine list was good, chocolate martini was not too sweet, (as expected) and it was clear. Would consider getting again. Overall good place for friends, family, or date night. Be prepared to drop $70+ on two people."

  • "The entrees we had were very good. Salmon and the pasta dish with meatballs. Both appetizers were NOT good. The smoked salmon crostini. I'm not sure there was even any salmon on those 3 little toasts for $12. Yikes... And the homemade chips with blue cheese sauce was not good. The chips were cold, thick ad rather tasteless then add the blue cheese ( I think it was) sauce that tasted quite vinegar like. Generally.. Not consistent overall. Atmosphere is ok.... Pretty casual...art district "like" but it felt a little like they're trying to be a nicer place than it is...I would go back but wouldn't make a special trip down there just to eat at this resturant."

  • "Terrific cocktails, nice appetizers, and excellent dessert. Neither of us were thrilled with our entrees. Mine, a Seafood combination, was just okay. My wife ordered scallops, which seemed to have gotten cold. the sauces accompanying them weren't particularly tasty. We did see a number of items ordered by other guests that looked tasty. We will be back, but we probably won't go for the seafood again."

  • "We got reservations to the Jacobson for our anniversary at the suggestion of a friend. It's a little loud but that's about my only complaint, if you want to call it that. Our server was great and even took pictures for us. I had the pork and she had the burger. Both were very good. The side vegetables with my meal were very tasty! I recommend!"

  • "We had Saturday lunch. It was delicious. Highly recommend the Jacobsen burger! Very filling. Service fantastic!"

  • "The food was excellent! I really enjoyed everything I ate. The pork shoulder was out of this world. However, the seating is very close and it is a little loud in the restaurant. If you're looking for a quiet/romantic dinig experience, this isn't the place to go. However, we really enjoyed this place and will definitely go back."

  • "Our waiter Thomas was great, so much better than one before. We returned this time with groupon-type. My seafood entree of $32 was sparse. a few mussels, green beans, tiny pieces of new potatoes, 1 small piece of salmon, 1 scallop. Husband's steak was fare, but $30! steak and green beans. The dessert of Baby cake was great, left our teeth purple/blue for hours! Great cocktails, but otherwise, won't return except for a drink/appetizer. Not worth $100 bill."

  • "there is hope. From outward appearances, the place gives the appearance of a hidden gem, tucked away in the alley. Inside it was layed out nicely, plus an outdoor patio for warmer weather. The menu is varied with diverse tastes. Very good, but for portion size and overall quality, our groups concensus was the total experience was a little overpriced. The restaurant was full, and with lower ceilings it was noisy, making conversation difficult. It would be a good place to meet for a drink with friends, but if looking for a romantic experience, try the patio or off peak times."

  • "The food was very good. Our server, Teresa, was energetic and enthusiastic! We had a lovely, quiet corner booth."

  • "Food was great. Décor very nice. Drinks perfect. Service slow, till the manager stepped in to help. But our biggest dislike was the noise! Perhaps some like it that loud during Happy Hour, but this was after 7:30 and it was too loud to hear each other at the table. What's the point of shouting over our food? The loud music, with a louder beat, forced the crowd to shout even louder and it was entirely unpleasant. We ate as fast as we could and left for drinks and dessert at a quieter place. Sorry, this did not encourage us to return, even though we generally liked the place."

  • "I loved the appetizers- potato crisps with blue cheese, and the trio of spreads. I asked for a non-alcoholic cocktail, and the bartender made something very special for me. It was extraordinary. Our server, Theresa, was great. She was friendly, very professional, on the ball, and really knows the menu."

  • "Service was horrible, the waiter was instantly rude to us when we told him we had a Groupon to use. My husband and I tip well over the actual spent amount, not Groupon total. We still tipped the waiter our standard amount however he was not deserving at all. When asked for recommendations he barely acknowledged us and would walk away. Not a memorable dinner other than the horrible service."

  • "Myself and a date went on a Tuesday night. Had some delicious cocktails and shared some yummy small plates. The Mac and cheese with bacon is phenomenal and the pig wings and meatballs were perfect. My favorite cocktail was the Hemingway - it was like an old fashioned but with lot of oranges. I think the other was called the Jacobson fizz... Perfect summer drink! Gin, mint, lime, white sparkling wine, and cucumber. Can't wait to come back and enjoy it on their lovely patio when it's a bit warmer. The place is really cute and was nice and cozy for a third date. We both really enjoyed it and will be back."

  • "We found out about the Jacobson from Groupon. We thought we would give it a shot for our date night. We started with the Oyster mushrooms and loved them. My husband had the Jacobson burger and it was great! I had the steak, it was okay, but nothing to really make it stand out. We also had the flourless chocolate cake, which was good. Our drinks were tasty and definitely alcoholic! Our waiter was wonderful, very attentive, and helpful. When we went to check out, there was a small problem with the bill, but the manager quickly got it taken care of. Overall, we loved the ambiance and the staff, most of the food was really good, but for the price, it will not be a regular for us."

  • "We went for lunch at 11:00. Our server was excellent, as was the food. This is a beautiful restaurant! My only complaint is that it's difficult to find as the entrance is not on Central, but around back. They need to give everyone specific directions."

  • "They had wonderful signature cocktails. I tried the Leap of Faith, awesome. I will definitely go back. Both entrees were fabulous, excellent sauces and perfect portion size. The bourbon cherry crumble was to die for. Thank you chef, staff and our favorite bartender Danika for an extraordinary night. Can't wait for the patio to open!"

  • "We enjoyed our dinner at this restaurant, however it was very difficult to find and parking is a problem. Unfortunately it had snowed quite a bit and we had to walk a couple blocks to get there. Service was good, not enthusiastic. We would eat here again."

  • "I wish I would have listened to the online reviews that said the service at The Jacobson had been spotty lately. The food was exquisite but our waiter basically ignored us all night. We started with small plates and would have ordered an entree or another round of appetizers if he had been at all observant or even glanced in our direction. Such a disappointment!"

  • "We had dinner at the Jacobson before going to the Kaufman for a show and we had a nice time. We had made a reservation, we were seated right away, we had a very nice wait person, the ambience is fun. My husband had the scallops and he loved them, he also ordered a side of Brussels sprouts and they were a bit undercooked. I bake brussel sprouts all the time and these were undercooked. I had the orange chicken and it was ok. Our mixed drinks were just ok too. We also had the dessert served in the skillet with berries and that was ok. This what I think...I would go again, dress casually, sit at the bar or outside, and have a beer and a burger. This restaurant is a neighborhood gem, but not really a fine culinary experience."

  • "My husband and I were really impressed with the food and level of service last Friday night. It was first Fridays and the restaurant was hoppin. The waitress was super friendly and accommodating to us and our 5yr. Noticing how busy she was the manager stepped in to make sure we felt taken care throughout our whole meal. Will definitely be coming back."

  • "I had been to The Jacobon before and had a great meal and service. This time, the meal was great, but the service was poor. The server was extremely busy, and he did not make that a secret in his demeanor or in his actual service to us. He even filled our glasses in a rush, splashing water everywhere. After he explained something (for example, appetizers), he would rush off even though we were ready to order at that time. At the end of our meal, he apologized for the "spotty" service. At that point, his apology did not really help the situation. Too little. Too late."

  • "Very good service. Steak was under cooked and a little tough. Pork shoulder was over cooked and a little tough. Waiter advised that they had run out of Sweet Vermouth so they could not pour their "special Manhattan" because they'd served "200" that day (Monday, March 10th) because it was nice and people had been out all day on their patio drinking Manhattans all day.(hard news to swallow - pun intended.) We ordered Hemingways and were disappointed by the abundance of ice in our glasses and the short pours. We had eaten there with a group on a Saturday night on December 7th (a Saturday) and found the food and bar to be much better. We will try again but if we're disappointed again we will NOT return."

  • "I went for the first time last week. My Dad and I ate lunch here. It is really beautiful on the inside. Overall, it has a masculine look to it, lots of dark colors and beautiful wood. The waiter was really kind and funny. Our food was fresh and delicious. The brussels sprouts were the best I've ever had! I went because I had a groupon, but I will definitely go back and bring my husband at some point! The patio area also looked adorable. It was too cold for that but I will try that as well this spring."

  • "A spur of the moment invite led us to the J for lunch. All four of us had the Jacobson Burger. We ordered them to varying degrees of cooking i.e. 1 rare, 1 med rare and 2 med well. The buns and toppings really complimented the meat. Delicious! The service was excellent as always."

  • "Back gain to The Jacobson. What a true gem this place is... the service, atmosphere and overall vibe of this place is off the chart. My fiancée and I love the sharable approach with their menu. "Mingle" items as their appetizers are called are delicious. Tonight we started with the Crispy Salt & Pepper Shrimp, Jumbo Lump Crab & Shrimp Dip and a wonderful bottle of Rose Champagne from their wine list that our server recommended. We could not get enough of them! Next our Center Stage Items (entrees) I had the Pan seared Scallops and my date had the Seafood Medley.... Unbelievable! Everything always cooked to absolute perfection. The Jacobson is our new favorite place! looking forward to enjoying their amazing patio this Spring."

  • "Pork was dry but the sauce was great, just overcooked. Hamburger was completely bland. Green bean/roasted potatoes were wonderful. Chips and blue cheese were so-so, a little too runny. Had a Groupon asked to sub dessert for an app saying we would pay the difference and they knew we were first timers, automatically shut down. Server was great but overbearing, rushed us and was too attentive. We wanted to relax and enjoy our dinner and stated that. Overall it was overpriced bar food in a beautiful restaurant."

  • "We had drinks at the bar before being seated. The best part. The rest of the service wasn't the friendliest or attentive. Food was average and kind of overpriced. 3 meatballs were $9. We ordered 5 so somehow that came to $20. I was hoping for more/better but there are better places to go for food in KC."

  • "We really enjoyed the ambience and food on a Saturday evening before heading downtown for an event. Overall the food was delicious, matching the price. Unfortunately the service was way too slow. We made reservations for 6:15, expecting to be there for an hour leaving plenty of time to get to our event. Our drink and appetizer order was taken timely, but our main order was not taken until 7pm. By the time our food came we were scrambling to eat so we could make it to our show. 90 minutes at a restaurant that should cater to people eating prior to events was disappointing. I am definitely willing to chalk this visit up to a poor server and try the restaurant one more time. It's just too pricy of a place to receive poor service."

  • "I had an 8:15 reservation for 4, we arrived around 8:10 and we were apologetically told we'd have to wait a bit. Luckily 4 chairs were open at the bar, it was about 7 minutes before we were even acknowledged by one of the two bartenders, it was a bit frustrating they didn't say anything. We were finally greeted and decided to order beers to avoid any further wait on cocktails. About 8:35 we were seated and about 5 minutes later greeted by our frantic waitress who informed us they were 2 servers and a bartender down, she was an older gal but had great personality and even though was extremely busy took great care of us! Cocktails were AMAZING and the food was fabulous. I would highly recommend the seafood medley to anyone trying it out!"

  • "We ate at Jacobson prior to a performance at Kaufmann Center. It was close and the experience was excellent. Wonderful service, great menu with food prepared and presented perfectly. Manager stopped by to check with us. Everything was up to our highest expectations. One draw-back: Although we had an excellent parking spot by having early reservations, parking around the Jacobson is not easy."

  • "This was the first time to visit the Jacobson. I had a little trouble finding it but once there had an excellent meal at a leisurely pace. The pork was good as well as the pasta and meatballs. The charcuterie was not very exciting in its varieties but the oysters were great."
