Diner Reviews
  • "We went to The Ivy Inn Restaurant to celebrate our two birthdays and anniversary. We are new to the area, and several friends had highly recommended this restaurant as a "special occasion" restaurant. It truly was! We received excellent service, but it appeared that everyone in the restaurant was receiving the same type of service, so it wasn't just because ours was a special occasion. The menu offered us wonderful selections, and once we received our food, we were hooked. The choices we made were perfect. We can't wait for a return visit knowing that it probably won't be a "special occasion", but because we know we will get an excellent meal at a reasonable price."

  • "It's basically dining in a home. All small tables, so very intimate. Food was delicious, but pricey. I had the lamb, and would recommend. My GF got the fish, which was nice as well. Got the mushroom appetizer which was very refreshing. "

  • "This was great for a special occasion we recently had. The service was a little slow but other than that, it was really great food and in a great atmosphere. We would go back."

  • "The Ivy Inn is in the heart of the University of Virginia country. The food and service is excellent. The downstairs bar is a bit noisy but if you get a table upstairs it is much quieter."

  • "We went for a birthday celebration. I pained me to choose from the menu because there were so many great offerings. The portions were the perfect size. We had the wild mushroom soup with savory bread pudding, the mixed green salad, the Duet of Lamb, Filet of Beef Tenderloin and then Key Lime Pie and profiteroles. Every bite was fantastic. We are already planning our next visit so we can try more items from the menu."

  • "We have enjoyed going to Ivy Inn for birthdays, anniversaries, graduations, and other celebratory events. It's always a lovely time. The food is outstanding and the menu constantly changes to reflect what's in season. I appreciate the local meats and produce that are offered. I had the mussel appetizer which I'd order again and again because it is so scrumptious (sausage, savory tomato broth, little salty garlic chips, and toasted focaccia for dipping!). My husband had the appetizer with amFog mushrooms and we practically licked his plate clean. Absolutely divine. We've often commented that we could make a meal out of appetizers at this place because they're so delicious. We're never disappointed! YOU MUST GO!"

  • "Excellent as always. Service great. Only problem and not the fault of the Inn was a very loud group in the room we were in. One particularly nice thing they have is an extensive wine list with reasonable prices."

  • "Actually, most of the food was excellent too. The bison hanger steak, the salmon, the mushroom appetizer, and the grilled fig appetizer we're all fabulous. Just a bit disappointed with the bland bolognese sauce on the yummy gnocchi. The service was perfect. Thank you for the excellent wine recommendation. The Prisoner is a keeper."

  • "The last time we visited the food was excellent: five stars but the pastry was just good. This time the food was just good but the desserts were excellent."

  • "My husband and I had a fabulous evening at the Ivy Inn. Not only was the service attentive, but they printed up personalized the experience since we were celebrating our wedding. The food was delicious. Every aspect of this experience was wonderful, worth every penny!"

  • "We were in Charlottesville for a birthday weekend of touring and celebrating. Selected this restaurant based on reviews and trip advisor. We had a very lovely evening starting with a Happy Birthday menu, and a glass of complimentary champagne to two delicious cookies to end the evening. The food is excellent and our server, Alex, was attentive, informative and very pleasant. It is pricey esp the wines but is worth it for a special occasion."

  • "We'd be eating here often if we lived here. It's a warm, cozy, relaxing room in which to eat outstanding food. The service is friendly but not unctuous. My flounder was wonderfully moist and delicate, and my wife said she'd never had better trout."

  • "After a wine tasting trip on Sunday afternoon we went for an early dinner. Christian was our waiter and did an excellent job through out the meal. We had oysters on the half shell, salads, filet, pork chop and bison and it was all delicious! Kudos once again to the Ivy Inn for delivering a consistent, wonderful dining experience."

  • "The restaurant is in a old home that is greatly in need of repair. We were seated upstairs. The stairs up were covered with well worn carpet frayed and the steps tip to the right making it difficult for most to navigate. The room we were in was noisy. The food was good but far to expensive for what was presented. The restaurant is dimly lit so that one doesn't see the need for a decor upgrade! We live in Charlottesville where there are many good restaurants. The Ivy Inn will not be on our favorite list."

  • "Delicious food with exceptional service. It was my daughter's birthday dinner and the restaurant created a personalized menu for her to keep in additional to complimentary champagne! What a pleasant surprise. Both the lamb and fish dishes were perfectly cooked and savory. Never had such moist well done lamb before! Highly recommend this restaurant when you are in Charlottesville."

  • "We had received a gift certificate to the Ivy Inn as a wedding gift . Having never been there before weren't sure what to expect even though the website and reviews expressed favorable comments. The dining experience far exceeded our expectations ... Service was exceptional !! Food and wine .. extraordinary !! Dessert .. Decadent !! We will definitely go back !!!"

  • "Wonderful service, and the food was pretty good. We had the four cheese ravioli and the duck. The duck was assumedly good, as he ate every bite, but the ravioli tasted like anything but cheese. I did appreciate the extras from the chef, but would consider not doing duck liver as the amuse-bouche since that's a very specific taste that not everyone has acquired. The second extra from the chef was a wonderful lobster ravioli, and then with the check came a chocolate macaroon (although I've never had a macaroon that texture before?). I really appreciated the extra touches and our server was awesome. We had a great time and will definitely go again if we're in Charlottesville, but will definitely order something else."

  • "I took my wife to the Inn for Valentines Day and perhaps that was the problem. The $70.00 per person five course meal was a disappointment from beginning to the end. Their wine list was very limited, the food was very salty (my wife had the salmon and ate approximately 1/4 of it, before giving up as the salt was overwhelming. The service was very rushed, and when the bill came, our server never informed us that a rather large tip was already added. We will not go back."

  • "Our favorite place for special dinners out. They do personalized menus if you say it's your birthday or anniversary when you make the reservation. The Valentines Day dinner was a menu of special selections, 5 courses, generous portions, with a chocolate rose for each lady, pink fortune cookies, and a box of little valentine hearts for each couple. Service and food are always top notch and the setting is intimate and comfortable. The regular menu selections are varied and excellently prepared, and the staff goes out of their way to make diners feel special."

  • "My wife and I had reservations (Open Table) for New Year's Eve. Early dinner (~6:45 PM). Wait staff very attentive and helpful with menu and wine list. Dinner was 5 course pre fixe menu. The appetizer was an interpretation of the traditional southern ham biscuit. Probably a poor choice and quite fatty and gristle-rich. The remaining menu choices were very good and well prepared. Pleasant evening meal, although we could not determine why there had been no later reservation times as the room in which we were situated had two open tables for the two hours we were at the restaurant. In general, decent food and very good service, but nothing spectacular. We will try it again in the future."

  • "I had a reservation for 5pm, and arrived promptly at 5pm. I was seated right away. I took my daughter out to dinner. We were promptly served, and the waiter was great. He attended us without fail the entire meal, and when he got tied up, someone else came to take care of our needs. The food was excellent!! We had the fig toast which was outstanding, and I had the Rockfish and my daughter had the chicken breast. We then had the creme brulee and the lemon ice box cake. It was all wonderful, the service was wonderful, the location was wonderful. An awesome dinner!"

  • "We sat in small downstairs dining room with ceiling fan. Nice ambiance. The quail that me and my son had was the best dish ever. A 10 plus. And the shrimp and grits was out of sight. Even the pork chop that another guest had was fabulous, as were the lamb chops. The waiter, Christian, was extremely helpful, and prompt and friendly. It' s worth a trip,to Charlottesville just to go,there"

  • "While visiting Charlottesville, my wife and I were looking for a good local restaurant for a nice dinner. We tried the Ivy Inn, based on several reviews we read online. The restaurant is located in an old home, which both my wife and I found quite charming. The service was exceptional. The waiter was attentive, but not intrusive. The food was quite good, but not great. We enjoyed our meal, but will likely try another restaurant next time we are in town visiting."

  • "The service was excellent and not stuffy, which makes for an uncomfortable dining experience. My husband's steak was very good. I ordered the sweet potato bread pudding which I ended up not liking, although i love sweet potato and bread pudding. I also ordered the pumpkin ravioli - the pasta being a bit rubbery but the filling was good. The chocolate cake dessert was very good. I would go back for a special occasion."

  • "It was our first time there. We were greeted with a happy anniversary welcome and a menu that also acknowledged the occasion. After a complimentary glass of champagne we were served one of the best meals we've had in many years. The foie gras was the best I've ever had, perfectly prepared over an apple tart tatine and a fig jam. The rockfish (me) and trout (my wife) were also extraordinary. Finally, our dessert (a perfectly prepared comforting apple crisp) came out with Happy Anniversary written in chocolate on the plate. Great food, great service, great ambience. Completely recommend."

  • "My wife and I visited the Ivy Restaurant for our 35th wedding aniversary. We had never been there but read online reviews and it sounded great. We were not disappointed. They gave us menus with Happy 35th Aniversary on it and then the Chef and waiter signed it for us. The experience was relaxed, not rushed at all. But the salads and main entree were delivered in good time. The presentation was wonderful and the food was excellent. Both of us were very pleased with was we ordered. We normally do not get deserts but on this evening we decided to try 2 of them and they were both wonderful. What a great dining experience. The restaurant is an hour away but we will return again with friends."

  • "THE FOOD AND SERVICE WAS OUTSTANDING! I APPRECIATE THE FACT THAT THE MGMT PAID ATTENTION TO COMMENTS WHEN BOOKING. THE MENUS, SERVICE AND EVENING CONVEYED CARE AND ATTENTION TO DETAILS. THE PUMPKIN AGNOLOTTI WAS PREMO, THE ROCKFISH WAS SUPERB AND THE RACKLET OF LAMB WAS TO DIE FOR. DESSERTS WERE VERY GOOD OVERALL BUT THE CHOCOLATE TORTE WAS MARGINAL. GOOD PINOT NOIR FROM OREGON! THANKS!!!"

We enjoyed the duet of lamb, quail, agnolotti and ricotta gnocchi. The service was impeccable. Great desserts - don't miss the lemon meringue stack."
