Diner Reviews
  • "We've dined at The Italian Barrel several times over the past 4 years. Mostly our experience has been very pleasant until recently. After making reservations a few weeks in advance for a party of 6, my family had dinner here the first night of The French Quarter Festival. Although we were an early seating (5pm), the service was cold, slow, and to top in off "inadvertently" charged us almost 50% for a service fee that should have been an automatic 20%. Other complaints are that they held two bottle of wine while we ate. This would be fine accept that we were often left with empty glasses and had to ask if there was anything left at the end of the evening. I'm very disappointed since this has been a fav and a recommendation for years now."

  • "We visited this well reviewed restaurant on a Thursday night and had made 8:30 reservations via Open Table. It's a small place and the tables ahead of us ran pretty late. It was nearly 9:30 before we say down and then it took a long time to order and actually get any food. I realize you can't control how long a table sits, but it could have been managed better. Things like discussing the specials and ordering apps at the bar (which should have been comped given the long wait). Once we finally ordered, the food was great."

  • "Food and Service were EXCELLENT. Space was a bit cramped and noise a bit loud, but not terrible."

  • "the restaurant is tiny if you are planning to dine here, reservation are a must. Make them at least one or two weeks ahead"

  • "The Italian Barrel is an absolute Gem of New Orleans, when craving great wine and italian food (the Italian pinot grigio and cheese platter are out of this world) this is the place! The romantic ambience was totally endearing!"

  • "I like to take my boyfriend places he has not been in the city and this was both of our first times. The food was fantastic, very romantic, and the place itself was small and charming. We sat at a table but could easily have the same great meal at the bar. Can't wait to go back!!"

  • "Two of us had dinner at the bar. We had a fine bottle of Soave and shared three dishes: the mixed seafood salad, the pasta special and the Chilean sea bass. The special pasta was fresh pasta mixed with a blend of spinach, light cream sauce and baby fava beans—a superb dish. This was a notable meal with great taste and balance. The service was very attentive."

  • "We (2) shared appetizers of white anchovies and prosciutto & melon. We each had a pasta dish, wine and expresso. All was excellent."

  • "We had a lovely dining experience here one evening, and will definitely return on our next trip. The menu was quite encompassing. We chose a seafood fettucine and the baked ravioli. The server suggested the perfect wine for my husband's meal. Service was impeccable and elegant and tasteful. It was a great success for us!"

  • "With all the great restaurants in and around New Orleans, it would be hard to find a gem we'd never been to before. Italian Barrel is away from the main stream; on a small street at the end of the French Market. We made the reservation for a change in the normal cuisine; what a surprise. The place is small, with service outside and in. The service was friendly; made us feel at home. The real surprise was the food; authentic Italian and a very good menu to choose from. Good wine list mostly Italian and not too pricey. We will definitely be on our list whenever we are back to New Orleans."

  • "This place is incredible & definitely at the top of our all time restaurant favorites. Truly wonderful experience! Everything is authentic & so fresh! The chef/owner imports many items from Italy. Wine list is awesome. Our server LeAnn was so knowledgeable about every item in the menu, as well as, the wine list. We had the olive tasting & the arugula salad with the cherry mozzarella & balsamic. Tasted like the arugula was picked that morning. I had the fettucine crema & my husband had the ravioli with porcini mushrooms & truffle oil creme. Everything was so delicious we are going back tonight to hopefully have the lobster ravioli which is handmade. Can't wait!"

  • "Food good, but very pricey. There are other Italian restaurants with great food for a lot less money."

  • "Went here based on great reviews; inside seating was frenetic due to number of servers on staff going in and out to wait sidewalk seating. Outside tables 8' plastic affairs. Loud; lasagne sauce watery."

  • "Quaint Italian restaurant. Food consistently delicious. Wait staff knowledgable about food and wine."

  • "I was in town on business and booked The Italian Barrel through Open Table. Even though the place was small, the staff was extremely pleasant and I have to say it was one of the best meals that I have ever had, ever! The bruschetta was awesome and even the desert was unique and perfect. Everything was prepared just right with a great taste, the pasta , the shrimp, the cheeses, the wine..."

  • "When we walked in I was surprised how small this restaurant is - only a handful of tables. I wondered if some place this small could have quality food. No worry, the food was very good. Service was great. I'll be back."

  • "Local resident, frequent nola restaurants. This place stands out as a comfortable place for friendly, ambient dinner. Not extensive menu but can easily get vegetarian dish(roasted ravioli - perfectly seasoned) and my wife loved the fish (sea bass). Wine list short but hits the right buttons. If weather cooperates sidewalk dining is great. Waiter very knowledgeable about the menu. Definitely not a 'tourist' feeling location, frequented by locals as well as visitors. Comfortable & casual. Only downside is with Open Table (been with OT quite some time) - made the reservation through OT from link on IB site, when I made it OT had message 0 points would be earned. Odd. I mentioned it to the hostess at IB & she was confused by that as well."

  • "This restaurant is a wonderful gem deep in the French Quarter. The service was impeccable, knowledgable and friendly. My husband had the porcini ravioli in a truffle cream sauce which melted in your mouth without being overly heavy. I had the veal porcini with linguine and fresh cherry tomatoes. The veal was tender and seasoned perfectly while the fresh linguine and cherry tomatoes complimented the veal to a tee. I would definitely recommend this place but would love to keep it a secret in a city known for it's incredible cuisine."

  • "The food, wine, staff, ambiance ... all amazing. The ONLY thing that could have been better was the wait. We had reservations at 9:30pm. We arrived at 9:20, & there were 6 other people waiting for tables, and no place for any of us to sit or stand while waiting. Looking around at the tables, it seemed everyone was on their first course. Luckily, a couple got up from the bar and we were able to sit and drink while waiting, but we weren't seated for dinner until 10:30 -- an hour later than our reservation time. The flipside to that is that they don't rush anyone during your meal. Hope that the wait was just a result of Valentine's day traffic, and that next time we'll be seated promptly."

  • "We had an early reservation on a Monday and the small dining room filled quickly. The wine list was was curated well with all Italian choices and our server, Raini, was very knowledgeable. She helped guide us through the menu as well suggesting a delicious clam appetizer. The seafood and pastas couldn't be fresher! I would definitely dine here again."

  • "The food at Italian Barrel was excellent. I had the veal cutlet special, and it was incredible. Unfortunately, we were seated 45 minutes after our reservation due to a couple that refused to leave. However, the maitre de was very apologetic and actually took some drinks off the bill for us. Our server (Leanne) was excellent and highly knowledgeable about Italian Barrel's different options. The setting was intimate and lovely. Overall, the experience was well worth the wait."
