Diner Reviews
  • "This was great! Fit the need and very comfortable."

  • "The server that provided our service for table 11 was great. Also she was there and with a smile At was a special day for us. THANKS"

  • "This restaurant was recommended to my husband and I by staff at the hotel we were staying at. Our waitress was fantastic. Attentive, friendly and showed up at all the right times. The food choices were great. The menu was not large but varied. We couldn't decide and the appetizers looked so good we just chose four and went with that. We took home left-overs from appetizers! The muscles were melt in your mouth as were the oysters. The restaurant sits on the busiest rail line in the east. Yup we saw 5 pass while dining. But unless you were looking you wouldn't have know. The building didn't shake, nor was there noise. Excellent place to eat!"

  • "Had their soup du jour and beet salad! Satisfying and delicious!"

  • "Our meal was outstanding. The waitress was very efficient, accommodating, and friendly. We will be back."

  • "The dining room is always so smoky and you leave smelling like whatever is cooking in the kitchen. The menu is so limited and I personally don't feel the entrees are worth the value paid. On a positive note, I like their bar area/menu much better. Unless you're going for a special occassion, skip the dining room and eat in the bar."

  • "The energy here is always upbeat and the trains rumbling past contribute to a unique experience. There were a number of tables seated in a somewhat short time frame so the kitchen got a little busy all at once. The waitress treated us to an unexpected, but very appreciated demitasse of tomato basil soup. My steak was cooked to perfection and delicious. The sides were OK, but, the entree was the best. My sister said the rock fish was heavenly. We enjoyed a fabulous zinfandel and went home content, again remembering why we love to dine here."

  • "Our server was great, the location and interior were wonderful, the menu interesting, and presentation was top-notch, however, the smokiness from the cooking made the interior almost uninhabitable. I was so happy to leave!"

  • "As always, our trip to the IronHorse on 3/15 was great. We love the ever changing menu, the chef specials, and the staff that cares for the patron. Highly recommend this great gem!"

  • "Great restaurant in the heart of Ashland. Very smoky from the kitchen, but food was good."
    Dined on 3/7/2014
  • "We had been to the Ironhorse one other time for brunch and it was excellent. Dinner too was very good. This is one step below fine dining, but the food was very good and for a good price. They had a band playing in an adjoining room, but we were still able to hold a conversation with no problems. It was Saturday night and the place was bustling but contained. Excellent waitstaff who really want you to have a good experience. And we did."

  • "Wonderful feel as soon as you walk in the door. Clean and cozy. Food was excellent Went there for my daughters birthday and it exceeded our expectations."

  • "A great find with a terrific location. While some might be distracted by the trains that come zooming by, for me, it was a plus. Located beside a busy rail line, there will be trains right out of the front window while you dine. The menu changes seasonally, with inspired choices by the chef. From beef and pork to chicken and fish, there is something for every palate. There is also an excellent vegetarian choice features as well. For starters, the Shrimp and Crab "Tater Tots" are amazing. Don't let the name fool you; you want to try these! I had the Chicken Cordon Blue for my entrée, and it was some of the best I have ever had. Dessert is required, with an excellent crème brulee! Definitely a great experience!"

  • "My husband and I had our belated Valentine's dinner and it was wonderful. The waitress was very knowledgeable and very attentive. My New York Strip was one of the best I have ever had. My husband had the Chicken Cordon Bleu. His only complaint was that the ham in the middle shouldn't have been so salty. All in all a wonderful dining experience and the desserts were phenomenal. I had the ice cream with the carmalized banana and nuts and my husband had a chocolate torte which was very rich but awesome. Keep up the great service and food."

  • "Very old town atmosphere. Very memorable view of a freight train passing by while dining...reminded me of the old west. Food and service was not bad considering the price. Good service, and great ambiance."

  • "What a hidden treasure in downtown Ashland Va. The staff was friendly and attentive. Food was outstanding and the cocktails were amazing. The scallops and beet salad I highly recommend. Stuffed pork loin with mushroom bread pudding was outstanding. They had a really good wine list reasonably priced to high end."

  • "We have been to the Ironhorse for the past 5 years for New Years and we always have a great time - good food, good drinks, good music and great servers. Recommend to anyone living in the Ashland area. Great local experience."

  • "We always eat here when traveling up the I-95 corridor..."
    Dined on 12/31/2013
  • "We really enjoyed the festive martinis and champagne cocktails. Great presentation. A little slow in coming but well worth the wait! Menu was limited but a very good variety. Some slightly overcooked veggies but not enough of a problem to ruin the meal. Very fun, relaxed atmosphere. Had no trouble getting a table last minute using Open Table. Will plan on going there again for our New Year's Eve dinner."
    Dined on 12/31/2013
  • "My husband and I frequented this restaurant as a treat when we lived in Ashland. The great locally sourced food items, superb staff, especially Jeffery and location make it a must. Now that we live 45 minutes away we see it as more of a treat than ever. Highly recommended and absolutely foodie endorsed!"

  • "We enjoyed our lunch at ironhorse and would definitely go back again."
    Dined on 12/20/2013
  • "Our waitress was excellent. If you enjoy trains--this is the place. Not named the "iron horse" for nothing. Several trains passed on the tracks no more than 25 yards from our table---all going a "safe" speed."

  • "Since we were a group of four 'old friends', it was the perfect place for us to get together and visit...Our lunch was delicious and the wines that were referred by our server Jack, were great. We all said that we will return to the Ironhorse because it is a perfect meeting place for us...I don't know why we haven't been there before now....two of my group couldn't get over the trains coming by and just loved them! We will definitely return! Our server Jack was excellent for four 'old' ladies!!!"

  • "Always a reliable choice against limited competition in town. Highlights - decent wine list with a nice-to-have clearance list for bargains, eclectic menu, correctly cooked food, interesting view, and good wait staff. Opportunities - they need menu anchors/speciailities like a steak filet, signature side & dessert. They would benefit by having a core menu for regulars and those who could become regulars (besides the bar side). Also, the puree soup is not appealing and has lost its novelty with me after the first try."

  • "If a small but delicious entrée menu is the thing for you then the Iron Horse is the place to be. The food was delicious, service was excellent and the atmosphere was wonderful. Will go again for sure !!"

  • "We try to have our reunion every Month and The Ironhorse is a wonderful choice"

  • "Orders filet the only meat on the menu, just so so, wife had catfish and grits. She loved it ! Just not my type eatery ."
    Dined on 11/15/2013
  • "Great place for a relaxed and delectable dining experience. Fried oysters were a little bland, but the Rainbow Trout, was really bursting with flavor. I would love to have the recipe for the sweet and sour kale that accompanied the entree. It was scrumptious! There's no kids menu, but the bar menu offered our 10 year old a choice of barbecued wings and fries, so she was happy. They really don't do anything special for birthdays, either. Overall, the food and our server were great. The server was very attentive and pleasant. We will definitely be back when the weather is warmer to enjoy the trains going by, while we dine outdoors."

  • "The Iron Horse Restaurant in Ashland, VA brings back childhood memories of a quaint, picturesque, friendly railroad town. I had a delicious lunch with a friend. The potato and garlic soup was divine. The first words from our waiter was 'welcome back.' Because I had made a reservation on Open Table, he knew that I had previously been to the restaurant. After our wonderful lunch, we went across the tracks to some shops (traffic stops for you when you are ready to cross the street). A delightful day!"
