  • "I love finding local places in our travels and we have had some wins and some losers. Iron Horse in Ashland Va is an absolute gem, cool location awesome food and we loved it! Not cheap but worth it. The Key Lime Pie is to die for."

  • "My wife and I dined here for our 27th anniversary. The food was excellent as well as the service. I would recommend The Iron Horse to others and hope to return soon myself."

  • "We took a couple of out-of-town friends here for a visit. After listening all day to them trash Richmond with their obnoxious "Well, it isn't like Rome (or Malaga or ....) but...." drivel, the Ironhorse proved to be a relief. The food was fantastic. They can't get crab cakes where they live and the cakes worked their magic. The arrival of no less than four trains while we were dining reinforced the uniqueness of the setting and an attentive waiter completed the picture. It may be a long time before we have our friends back for another visit but we'll be going back to the Ironhorse frequently."

  • "Celebrated my wife's birthday here with our two adult children. Service was excellent - the food even better. It was the best dining experience we've had in a long time. We will dine here again, soon."
    Dined on 7/15/2014
  • "This is an excellent place for adults who enjoy good food and good company. There are a variety of menu choices and the restaurant changes this seasonally so there are always a few pleasant surprises. The food comes out at a nice pace, not rushed like some restaurants who want you in and out. The level of noise is appropriate with the options of restaurant dining and bar dining. It isn't loud and it isn't a sports bar. There were no crying children or rowdy children running around while unsupervised."

  • "We were looking for a place to have a nice lunch as a family when I found the listing for The Iron Horse. The food was excellent and the locale was charming. I would definitely recommend this restaurant to anyone visiting Ashland as a local gem."

  • "On Saturday, we came in early because we were seeing a show at Ashland Coffee and Tea. We wanted to get in early, but wanted more to eat than sandwiches. The hostess was very welcoming and our server was excellent and a true professional. The cocktails were perfect and our 2 glasses of red wine were delicious and well poured. The food portions were disappointing: I had one of the specials-the beef short ribs. The meat was delicious, but the quantity was ridiculously small. The 'ribs' consisted of 2 beef tips that looked like were stolen from another plate. I don't know if the wine list changes often, but the choices for champagne were pretty sparse (I was looking for Moet Imperial). For $96.00 (+ $20.00 gratuity), we were still hungry."

  • "Enjoyed our recent visit to Ironhorse. It was a return after too long an absence. Delicious scallop crepes with quinoia and perfectly seasoned Swiss chard. Chicken cordon bleu was classic. We will be returning sooner rather than later to this quaint Ashland gem situated along the train tracks."

  • "White tablecloths, cloth napkins, attentive servers, and excellent food and wine all combined to make a special dinner before we attended a fancy-dress ball at the nearby Arts Center. Two delicious soups: a chilled cream of pepper, and a hot pureed asparagus. Excellent pork loin entree suited this pork lover perfectly, and my husband's two crab cakes were perfect. The waitress helped the third member of our party choose a vegetarian entree, the generously sized black bean quesadilla. Alas, we were on our way to a dance and had no room for dessert, but another time we surely will try some."

  • "Situated in the heart of downtown Ashland, this place has great food, drink and wonderful atmosphere as folks bike along the street and the train makes its way through the center of town. "

  • "MY MEAL THE SHRIMP OVER LINQUINI WAS NOT THAT GOOD. IT WAS SERVED OVER SPAGHETTI NOT LINQUINI AND THERE WAS A HEAVY DARK GREEN CAPER SAUCE THAT OVER POWERED ALL OTHER FLAVORS. I GENERALLY LIKE CAPERS IN PASTA BUT SOMETHING WENT WRONG IN THIS DISH. I WAS EXPECTING THE CAPERS TO WORK AS AN ACCENT FLAVOR NOT THE MAIN FOCUS OF THE DISH. MY FRIEND ORDERED THE STEAK SPECIAL AND IT HAD GOOD FLAVOR BUT FOR $35 WE WERE EXPECTING A THICK CUT STEAK. IT WAS ONLY AN INCH THICK. OVERALL WE WERE DISAPPOINTED WITH THE FOOD, BUT THE WAITRESS WAS KIND AND DID BRING US A SAMPLE OF THE TOMATO PUREE SOUP WHICH WAS VERY NICE. THANK GOODNESS FOR A GENEROUS POUR OF WINE. IT KEPT ME SMILING."

  • "When staying in the area for a kings dominion trip, I found this place online and made a reservation not knowing to expect. After eating here we've decided that this is going to be our "must go to place" whenever we travel the ought the area. Food was amazing and the staff were very courteous and professional. It was a nice night and we are outside. Can't wait to visit this hidden gem again. "

  • "Great family meal. Place settings absent until our appetizers arrived. Made for a small distraction as we were handling small plates, napkins and silverware simultaneously. Also a couple of lags in our server's attentiveness, even though it didn't seem too busy."

  • "I have been a customer of the Ironhorse for 20 years. However Mother's Day brunch did not meet my expectations. "

  • "I've been going there for about two years, and I've never had a bad experience! It's probably one of my favorite places to go altogether, and the service is impeccable. The staff is also extremely friendly and they definitely treat you like royalty. Five stars!"

  • "Lived in Richmond year ago. Was in town for mother's day and went to Ironhorse. The menu was a nice change from the ordinary without being too electric for mom's taste. Everything was good from the service to the menu selection to the salad dressing to the dessert. The location near the railroad tracks and view of the trains provides a bit of nostalgia."

  • "We enjoyed the historic location on the railroad tracks (and even took the Ashland walking tour after lunch!). My husband thought his cheddar beefsteak sandwich was delicious and I felt the same way about my Rueben and potato salad. Service was exceptionally friendly and efficient. "

  • "Having used Open Table for years, we have always gone to great lengths to honor our part of the contract. We arrived on time at the Iron Horse, announced we were with Open Table and were listed as a "no show". Having a receipt and living only a few miles away and personally going back to the Iron Horse, this was resolved, but took effort and time which is not what one desires when having an evening out."

  • "This restaurant was recommended to my husband and I by staff at the hotel we were staying at. Our waitress was fantastic. Attentive, friendly and showed up at all the right times. The food choices were great. The menu was not large but varied. We couldn't decide and the appetizers looked so good we just chose four and went with that. We took home left-overs from appetizers! The muscles were melt in your mouth as were the oysters. The restaurant sits on the busiest rail line in the east. Yup we saw 5 pass while dining. But unless you were looking you wouldn't have know. The building didn't shake, nor was there noise. Excellent place to eat!"

  • "The dining room is always so smoky and you leave smelling like whatever is cooking in the kitchen. The menu is so limited and I personally don't feel the entrees are worth the value paid. On a positive note, I like their bar area/menu much better. Unless you're going for a special occassion, skip the dining room and eat in the bar."

  • "The energy here is always upbeat and the trains rumbling past contribute to a unique experience. There were a number of tables seated in a somewhat short time frame so the kitchen got a little busy all at once. The waitress treated us to an unexpected, but very appreciated demitasse of tomato basil soup. My steak was cooked to perfection and delicious. The sides were OK, but, the entree was the best. My sister said the rock fish was heavenly. We enjoyed a fabulous zinfandel and went home content, again remembering why we love to dine here."

  • "As always, our trip to the IronHorse on 3/15 was great. We love the ever changing menu, the chef specials, and the staff that cares for the patron. Highly recommend this great gem!"

  • "Our server was great, the location and interior were wonderful, the menu interesting, and presentation was top-notch, however, the smokiness from the cooking made the interior almost uninhabitable. I was so happy to leave!"

  • "We had been to the Ironhorse one other time for brunch and it was excellent. Dinner too was very good. This is one step below fine dining, but the food was very good and for a good price. They had a band playing in an adjoining room, but we were still able to hold a conversation with no problems. It was Saturday night and the place was bustling but contained. Excellent waitstaff who really want you to have a good experience. And we did."

  • "A great find with a terrific location. While some might be distracted by the trains that come zooming by, for me, it was a plus. Located beside a busy rail line, there will be trains right out of the front window while you dine. The menu changes seasonally, with inspired choices by the chef. From beef and pork to chicken and fish, there is something for every palate. There is also an excellent vegetarian choice features as well. For starters, the Shrimp and Crab "Tater Tots" are amazing. Don't let the name fool you; you want to try these! I had the Chicken Cordon Blue for my entrée, and it was some of the best I have ever had. Dessert is required, with an excellent crème brulee! Definitely a great experience!"

  • "My husband and I had our belated Valentine's dinner and it was wonderful. The waitress was very knowledgeable and very attentive. My New York Strip was one of the best I have ever had. My husband had the Chicken Cordon Bleu. His only complaint was that the ham in the middle shouldn't have been so salty. All in all a wonderful dining experience and the desserts were phenomenal. I had the ice cream with the carmalized banana and nuts and my husband had a chocolate torte which was very rich but awesome. Keep up the great service and food."
