A word from The Hungry Cat - Santa Monica Canyon
The Hungry Cat Santa Monica Canyon, our third location, sits on the PCH with amazing views of the Pacific Ocean. Chef/owner David Lentz & crew continue to focus on high quality fish paired with the best locally sourced ingredients, often from nearby farmer's markets. The 13 seat raw bar showcases Pacific and Atlantic oysters, Santa Barbara sea urchin, raw and marinated fish dishes, crab and lobster.

The market-inspired bar specializes in seasonal cocktails, craft brews and a wine list geared toward seafood.

The Hungry Cat Santa Monica Canyon is open daily serving dinner.

Diner Reviews
  • "The food was amazing here, but our service was a tad on the slow side."

  • "Overpriced, average food. Portions are very small too. A very crammed dining area."

  • "The Hollywood outpost is much warmer than this one in SM. The restaurant felt large and impersonal."

  • "The Hungry Cat is what it is...a seafood restaurant that is a step up on the food scale from the other PCH fare (Gladstones, Moonshadows, Dukes). I like that they often have live Santa Barbara uni (although I always seem to get the small one). The Hamachi appetizer is good, and so are most of the salads. You usually can't go wrong with the fish special. The lobster roll wasn't my favorite, but I'm pretty picky when it comes to lobster. I come here often and would recommend it."

  • "our third time back - food has been consistently excellent - oysters, caviar, local catch, fresh fresh fresh."
    Dined on 3/27/2014
  • "Inside it is a seafood place straight from central casting. The decor is maritime blues, the raw bar prominent and the menu the right, (quite short) length. The food was fine, well chosen shellfish and prawns and fine salads. The service equally good, efficient and not pushy. Tricky to reach from the beach, a tunnel under the road, and tricky to leave by cab - it is LA not Santa Monica so different cabs."

  • "WE had a terrific meal at this place. the service was good, the food was really different and good. The lemonade special from the bar was wonderful! all in all a great place to go."
    Dined on 3/19/2014
  • "patio is too noisy and vey unattractive. should have sat inside"

  • "On the busy PCH, and quite humble from the outside, The Hungry Cat is a surprisingly ambient and well run restaurant serving great seafood. Service is knowledgeable and casual. Would recommend to friends."
    Dined on 3/13/2014
  • "What I love most about this restaurant - despite great food and service - is that it hasn't succumbed to that horrible habit of playing music so loud that you have to scream to have a conversation. The noise level was pleasant and this restaurant's owners clearly understand that guests who are able to talk to each other will stay longer, have a great time and therefore order more."

  • "Watching Mike shuck oysters is a true pleasure. This is a man at the top of his game. Oysters are pristine and served beautifully. Just felt like discussing the oyster and cocktails in this review. All so good."

  • "Dining experience was delightful, except they did not have uni that day.... Which was the main reason we opted to dine here."
    Dined on 3/8/2014
  • "We walked out - we came for the Monday oyster special (@7:45 pm) - 2 of the 3 types of oysters offered - they were out of. . Only large oysters were left, not my taste. The one dinner special was sturgeon (yum) wrapped in bacon YUCK. Every other interesting fish dish was with pork. I wanted fish not pork. Scallops with pork, mussels with pork etc. I realize that the new trend is to put pork in everything from doughnuts to mussels.....so if you want a trendy pork palace this is your place."

  • "Service and food are both tops. Menu is interesting with a wide choice of both small plates and entrees. Seafood is the feature bit the do a great burger too, The cold platter of chilled raw and cooked seafood is amazing. They have Santa Barbara uni that is brought directly to them. Fresh as it can get, Oh, the prices are very fair for the quality they serve."

  • "loved the open kitchen, the oysters were amazing, the service impecable, very creative meal selections on the menu, very cool vibe, happy people"

  • "This was our third meal at The Hungry Cat-Santa Monica and this time we chose to sit at the Raw Bar, and what a treat! Fresh live sea urchin changed my attitude for "uni" . What I have had in sushi bars is always at least a day or two old and nothing like what we had here. it was sweet and slightly briny without the usual "tide pool iodine" flavor I had experienced in sushi. It was heaven! the oysters, caviar, crab, and shrimp were all superb! In the end, we realized we should have gotten one of the tiered platters, since we had almost everything they had on hand! the sommelier suggested a couple of wines that were reasonable and delicious paired with our seafood choices. We loved it all!"

  • "Had a wonderful meal at the Hungry Cat. The menu had lots of different seafood dishes with real alternative and unusual styles. I chose scallops with gorgonzola gnocchi, peas and kumquats and loads of other things that I cannot remember but the different flavours just popped out once I tasted everything. And the scallops were perfectly cooked - always difficult as many places over cook them. My husband was not feeling well so did not eat much of his food but the pea and ham hock soup that he ordered was delicious although quite rich. The ambience of the restaurant was great and the staff attentive and helpful. I would heartily recommend it."

  • "If you're looking for an eclectic, seafood-laden menu with bold offerings, this an excellent choice. But for a romantic dinner for two on a weekend night, not so much. The noise level here is so high you will have to shout to be heard across a small table. Weeknights may be less vibrant. I recommend trying one of those first and braving the weekend bar scene only if you think the food is worth it."

  • "Went here with my girlfriend for Valentines Day and we both did the special menu. Delicious! Steak was maybe a little tougher than I like, but the lobster, the pea soup, the dessert were all amazing."

  • "The hostess showed us to our table in a corner a bit away from the din of the fast-filling restaurant. The server was over immediately, took our wine and oysters order, and told us the specials for the day. The oysters were small, as she said they would be, but exquisitely fresh with little need for the delicious dips that accompanied them. The Muscadet went perfectly with the oysters, only to be supplemented with a bottle of Chablis that accompanied the shared salad and octopus middle course. For entree, the boys had a delicious halibut, with braised short rib baked in pasta, but the girl's black cod was even better. Everything was special, perfectly cooked, balanced on the plate, beautiful to look at, even better to eat."

  • "Service was terrific! Food interesting, but their bar is very limited and expensive."

  • "Tucked away just off PCH is a beautiful little place, vibrant with great seafood. Wonderful service. raw bar was outstanding, and the oysters were perfection. Try this place, don't mind the busy corner and the wait for valet parking (because of Giorgio's next door) and you will be happy you tried it."

  • "I went with high expectations, but the food just didn't deliver. Maybe my bar was high, after having just returned from several great NY dinners, but the seafood dishes were just okay, did not highlight the fish or shellfish."
    Dined on 1/24/2014
  • "Food was superb. Kitchen was slow from time of ordering to delivery. When we got there it wasn't that busy. It got full quickly thereafter. I could see the kitchen getting behind when it got crowded, but not earlier. Will return to try some of their other great dishes."

  • "We had a good experience at the Hungry Cat Hollywood, so thought we'd try the one in Santa Monica. Arrived on time for 7:45 reservation, seated immediately. Service was a little slow, but got a bottle of wine and oyster crackers soon enough and appetizers eventually. After a long delay, they brought out our appetizers again - oops. Sent them back. No explanation or apology for about 20 minutes. At 9:00 we asked to cancel the entrees and bring the check. A manager came to apologize, said he would comp the entrees and make them 'to go'. We paid the bill and waited until 9:20 and decided to leave without the still-missing entrees."

  • "Good but portions were on the large side went for Dine LA and two courses left me overfull, be carefull not to over order"
    Dined on 1/24/2014
  • "Food and wine were delicious but once our courses started coming out our server never came back to check on us or ask how our food tasted. Lucky for him, the food was all delicious. Monday 1/2 price oysters is such a great deal too!"

  • "We were surprised that we got a 4 top at this fantastic seafood joint on short notice. Our waiter made us feel like we were back East, rather than Santa monica with his thick New England accent. He described the oysters in detail that we started off with a dozen. Each one tasted like it was harvested that AM. We shared the tangy, lemony house salad. The lettuce leaves popped with flavor, while the tartness became mellowed with cheese. Every dish ordered was superb. The salmon special and uni appetizers were incredible as was the scallop gnocchi, lobster roll and chicken sandwich. We ended the meal with the phenomenal chocolate bread pudding. The Hungry Cat is tops for seafood entrees for foodies for sure!"

  • "Oysters were just okay. Expected more since it is a oyster bar/seafood restaurant. Food was really pricey. The scallop dinner was really good, but stay away from the bread pudding dessert. Had to send it back and I never send back food (especially dessert)."

  • "While the restaurant is hard to find for 'out of towner's trying to get across PCH at 6PM is difficult. The Black Cod was excellent, well prepared, fresh and tasty. On the other hand the lobster roll did not meet even the lowest expectations. I realize this is Santa Monica/Malibu but for someone from Montana $130.00 for dinner and a glass of wine seems a bit much."
    Dined on 12/23/2013
  • "Hungry Cat remains a great spot for some of the most inventive seafood in town. Chef/owner David Lentz does a fine job plating the freshest fish available with a stellar cast of supporting starches and vegetable. The Baramundi with harisa and yogurt dressing was killer and the black cod with long beans and black sticky race couldn't have been more satisfying. We also loved the Hamachi with pomegranate starter and the simple salad is anything but. On other occassions, the oyster bar is not to unusual ingredients to be missed."

  • "We ate here 2 years ago and thought it was good and wanted to try it again. This time it was even better. I would put this meal on my memorable list and as a foodaholic that is high praise."
    Dined on 12/20/2013
  • "All of the above... though not so much kid friendly nor romantic... but a great great meal with perfect service !"

  • "I had really looked forward to eating the seafood from this restaurant. Their raw bar snow crab legs were fresh. Although the food was perfect, the servers are not doing this restaurant any favors. They just had the attitude I am too good for this...Additionally, we did not order alcohol and once they had determined that we were not buying alcohol their service became poor quickly. We had to ask for everything, nothing we needed was anticipated by the servers. For example, they kept passing by our table, and it was obvious we were finished, but our plates were not cleared. After about the 4th pass, we had to request our bill. No offer of desert either. I wanted to order more, but servers never came by so this will cost the owner..."

  • "Parking is terrible just valet ($7) park and save yourself suffering. Seafood platters were good but the cooked items were very salty. The lobster roll was amazing! And the lemon dessert is good but big enough to share. Overall I though it was good but is on the pricy side ($300 for 2 after tip) would come back though went we want to splurge :)"

  • "We had a great time for my birthday this past wknd. The staff was very kind and the food was fantastic. This is a great place to go if you want great quality seafood."

  • "This was my first time going the Hungry Cat in this location, but I have really enjoyed the Hungry Cat in Santa Barbara and Hollywood. The Santa Monica restaurant is every bit as wonderful, with its selection of fresh fish, shellfish, oysters, and to my delight, uni was in season. I loved it and will be a regular at this location!"

  • "Dinner at the Hungry Cat was wonderful in every aspect. Starting with Manny the manager helping us get settled and choosing wines that our whole table liked to an amazing range of dishes, every one of which our group really, really liked. We had a great time and will definitely come back"

  • "Several dishes were good, tuna great. One fish dish not edible, too greasy. Early on Sunday evening restaurant empty, quiet and nice. Restaurant emailed every 12 hrs. to assure that we would be showing up, this was a nuisance/ Valet, hard to find then parked car in a very vulnerable spot and left door wide open, in way of traffic"
