Diner Reviews
  • "Recently had a business lunch there. The prix fixe is a good deal."

  • "A great find prior to going to a Garden event. Very attentive service."

  • "Took my team out to The Houndstooth for some post work dinner/drinks. Had us all set up and ready for when we arrived. Gracious enough to seat us though the whole group didn't arrive at once. The service was great. The food was fantastic - wings are a must try. Lamb stew was delicious. No complaints from anyone at the table. Only downside was that they had on a hockey game (Boston vs. Montreal) and refused to put on the Brooklyn/Miami game. We are still scratching our heads on that one."

  • "I visited the pub with my parents twice. On our first visit (on the day of our reservation), we had a nice meal. Our server was nice and helpful. When she brought us our bill, she had already included a 20% tip (without asking us). We assumed that it was the policy of the restaurant. When we visited the pub again, we had a much better server, who did not include any tip, but let us decide on the amount. Since our second server was way better than the one we had on our first visit, we really changed our mind about the dining experience that we had on the first night!"

  • "Pubs are pubs but this one has delicious calamari. My friends and I have tried a lot of restaurants on Long Island and the city and this place has the best. We had soup and a sandwich for lunch also. The carrot ginger soup was great, my roast beef sandwich was okay. We have been here a couple of times and it does not disappoint ."

  • "I had yelped a place for brunch near Madison square garden. We were going to a NCAA game early afternoon and I was sold by the fact that all brunch items come with a mimosa or a Bloody Mary. The brunch menu was not very extensive but it got the job done. The mimosa was great. Not too much pulp which was a win in my opinion. The good was unfortunately quite bland. I think this would be a great place for drinks but the food left much to be desired. Also they did not provide us with butter. We had to ask 2 different waiters multiple times. Kind of strange when the entire group ordered breakfast."

  • "We sat down, didn't get a waiter to our table for more than 10 minutes - this should have been a sign to leave but we were hungry and didn't want to search out another place in an area that is short on decent places. It wook over 30 minutes for a salad and turkey burger order to finally come, the turkey burger was overcooked. I can handle mediocre food at a pub, most are but no excuse for the european-like service times."

  • "First time there and did not quiet get the place!! The bar on the upper floor was packed and very, very loud. Went downstairs and it was like a PUB, wine list was poor food choices were not that great. OK place to grab a drink"

  • "I used to go to this place more often when I worked in midtown a couple of years back, but when I recent came for a happy hour gathering with some old co workers I was sadly disappointed. The service was horrible. Severs were rude and kept rushing our table. There wasn't even anyone around us and it still felt like they were pushing us out. We had to keep asking our server for additional basic items such as place settings or more water; the only thing she couldn't bring fast enough was the check. I figured I would go back for old time sake, but that will probably be the last time. The food was still decent, but not as good as I remember."

  • "Gave it a shot...food was poor. Beers are beers. In NYC, plenty of better options. Service was great however. Won't return."

  • "5 people very happy with their food choices. Chicken Pot Pie was fab, Seared Tuna excellent, even a plain burger was very good. Wait staff was very attentive & quick to respond to requests. We would definitely recommend it . The noise level was high right after work because of the bar sceen but if you're into that go for it!"

  • "Went before seeing a play, had the heirloom tomato salad, penne pasta, and fish and chips, all were amazing!!"
    Dined on 6/30/2013
  • "It took the server almost 15 minutes to come to our table and get our drink order after being seated. The sweet potato fries were good. The chicken on my sandwich was very tough."
    Dined on 4/6/2013
  • "Loved the energetic atmosphere but all 3 dinners were very mediocre. I have never had such dry chicken. the fish and chips were extremely greasy and the pulled pork was OK. They needed more staff help as well considering how busy the restaurant was. The drinks from the bar were very good."

  • "If you're looking for a restaurant in the Penn Station/MSG, Hammerstein area, you probably know it's slim pickings. In this tourist and commuter laden area, Houndstooth is a diamond in the rough. Mind you, it's no great shakes, but much, MUCH better than the nearby pubs and dives. The do offer a few non-fried entrees as well, thereby improving your pre-game options. The portions are large, the beer and cocktail list is lengthy, and the sweet potato fries are actually memorable. I recommend reserving in advance as this place is always crowded with commuters. I would also warn them if you have a game/concert to get to. Otherwise the service can be a little lax."

  • "beer list is very poor for a Pub and the food menu is lacking. Nothing special at all about this place."

  • "The bartender both at the main bar upstairs and downstairs almost appeared to not want to serve you. I waited with my friend and a couple by my side waited for at least 10 min before he served us. The Bus boys and he did not even look busy. They were chatting amongst themselves, and avoiding eye contact with the couple and my friend and I. So service at the bar was poor."

  • "I usually love the Houndstooth Pub. I made a reservation at 730pm friday, December 21st keeping in mind tourists n holiday parties. I was completely let down. Waitress served us our drinks n then after 15 minutes of waiting, we ordered our appetizer, only to find out they ran out. Then she apologized left, n when she came back a while later we ordered something else n we were told they ran out as well. What establishment does this on a Friday during the holidays. I definitely will keep that in mind if I ever decide to return."

  • "Seemed like a good place for a happy hour. Place was really bustling the evening we were there. Food was just average, but convenient and decent enough for a bite to eat prior to an evening show."

  • "We went there thinking we could watch the SEC championship game. When we made reservations we asked specifically for seats where we could see & hear the game. When we arrived we were offered a table that was in front of a TV will terrible color reception. We then were shown a table where half the seats faced away from the TV. Finally got a table that was as far away as possible from the TVs. The server was fine and clearly saw we were not going to be her big ticket food table. She came by often enough to keep the beer and drinks fresh. The place slowly filled up to where the noise was incredible. We would never have heard the TV from where we were and the noise made it uncomfortable to even stay. There was nothing special here."

  • "Food was unexceptional to poor. The lentil soup may have been the thinnest and most tasteless I ever had. Service was OK."

  • "A great place to hang out casually - next time I hope to see downstairs!"
    Dined on 8/31/2012
  • "Pretty straight-forward pub fare and ambiance, all fairly-priced. Unfortunately it's yet another high-decibel room and after an hour of straining to hear and be heard it becomes tiresome to carry on a conversation. But the service was excellent and the hostess extremely accommodating of our special requests regarding seating and privacy."
    Dined on 8/21/2012
  • "Food and service were very good, but I did notice that the fish and chips portion was smaller than on my previous visits. There were two pieces this time. Previous there were three pieces."
    Dined on 7/6/2012
  • "Food was good. Service wasn't. No one came around to re-fill our drinks. Couldn't find our waiter."
    Dined on 6/1/2012
  • "If you are in a rush and need to grab some sub-par food then this is the place for you. The lack of flavor was matched by it's lack of quality ingredients. The mashed potatoes were clearly from a box as the texture was a dead give away - grainy and uninspiring with little butter or seasoning to hold it together. The special of the day (a chicken dish) was slightly overcooked and overpowered by the sauce that it sat in."

  • "If you are 25 and want a beer and maybe a burger before you go to an event at the Garden, this place is for you. Otherwise, steer clear! Service was lousy; draft beer choices VERY limited-- its a pub after all-- and food mediocre at best. Burger was bland-- there's a first. Fried calamari was crispy but bland-- and then the bottom was swimming in grease. Fries were the best thing I ate. Even the dessert was so-so.. and was a warm dessert that was served nearly cold. Sat too long because of the poor service. Will not go back."
