Menu selection were better than I've ever seen. A neophyte in our group had a really tough time deciding which to eat... Arctic char with rice and delectable mango sauce was excellent! Very attentive service, but also allowed us lots of time to catch up with each other. Truly a gem of a lunch spot!

The Highwood Dining room was very disappointing. We expected more for the cost. The food was presented nicely but was not very flavorful. The caesar salad was prepared at the table but was very bland. The roast was tough and dry although the gravy was very good. They were out of the fish at 12:30 for lunch so had the pad thai instead which was okay. The mocktails were very good. The service was very good. For some reason, the menus were left on the table until we ordered dessert.

All in all the Highwood is a great experience. The students who run the restaurant are all trying their hardest. The food is good and service is great! Every other time I have been to the Highwood, the experience was absolutely wonderful. This time, the food didn't quite meet expectations. I found the striploin a bit tough and the potatoe choice was bizarre. The veg seemed a bit overdone. Everything else was excellent! The desserts are to die for, and wine selection was very good.

We dined here for lunch last Friday. There were 5 of us, 3 had the charcuterie (it was excellent), 1 had the special starter (it was avg, she wouldn't get it again) and one had the pumpkin soup (over seasoned). The mains were alright, I wasn't wowed with the lamb special, and it was a touch over seasoned as well, the baked potato offered with the Bento box was strange, rice or another grain would have been more welcome. The service was good, our server was obvs new as he lacked knowledge of the menu. He however was very friendly and very attentive.

Ordered shrimp appetizer; kitchen just served the last order to another guest. Guests at my table ordered three fish specials, the Arctic char, and was sorely disappointed as all three orders were served to others as well. Frustrating having to pick out new menu items. Bill: overcharged, waiter forgot to take off initial $6 shrimp appetizer.

We've eaten at Highwood a dozen or so times. This visit in Oct. was very disappointing: undercooked, tough sirloin roast--but the gravy and mashed potatoes were good. Very stingy with vegetables for almost all meals every time we've been. One would expect that especially a culinary school would encourage healthy, balanced meals, complete with full portions of vegetables, not just a parsnip or lettuce leaf here and there for presentation. Also, it would help if the menu gave more information about the dishes in addition (or in place of?) the esoteric invented names that don't reveal much. The students and staff, however, are extremely pleasant and helpful.

My wife and I dined at the Highwood on Wednesday, Sept. 17 (our anniversary). We did it last year for the first time, and had such a great meal that we decided to do it again. We were served by Vishna, who was absolutely charming and delightful. She recommended stuff to us, joked around, and was honestly one of the best servers we've ever had. The only downside to the night was the table of younger people (SAIT students, I'm guessing) who obviously had too much to drink. One of them was speaking very loudly, disturbing not only our table but many around us as well. When I heard him use an obscenity, I finally spoke to one of the instructors, who went and spoke with him. Little disappointed that it took so long for them to be dealt with.

Our first time at Highwood. We liked the ambience, the service and the food. It was a LONG evening (about 3.5 hours!), with big gaps between some courses, especially the wait for the appetizer. We luckily were in no hurry. Another time (and we definitely will go back) we may walk or take a cab, so that we can have leisurely drinks between and with courses. Some delicious food - we loved just about everything, and the student servers and staff supervisors were attentive and empathetic. We will certainly recommend it to others, with the timing proviso!

Our family visits The Highwood twice-a-year. The normal rating range is Very Good to Outstanding and this visit was within our overall expectations. What attracts us to the Highwood is the menu - a combination of a something-for-everyone and interesting daily special choices. A notable disappointment this visit was the Japanese Style Minestrone that did not go over well with the 3 of us who chose it. We loved the presentation - a bowl of finely shaved vegetables and tiny mushrooms, topped right at the table with a hot Japanese broth. The observation from all was that the "smell" of the soup was just not pleasant. Maybe next time, and there will absolutely be a next time, we'll go with the Soup of the Day. The margarita was excellent!

I am an avid fan of the Highwood but the menu for both lunch and dinner left something to be desired this semester. While the food was always good, some of the combinations were.....odd. And the menu did not do a good job of describing the meal received. But, as always, I look forward to the fall when I can enjoy the new menu experience. Keep up the good work.

The Highwood food is always wonderful, how they manage it in a teaching environment is beyond me. Our service was very pleasant and efficient, exactly what you need at lunch time. The daily mocktail drink is always an adventure created by the students; Tuesday's Apple Pie was surprisingly good, not too sweet as the name might imply, very refreshing.

Our family of four have been semi-annual 'regulars' at The Highwood Dining Room for many years. We love the food and the quietly elegant ambience. But remember, this is a live classroom and the students are not (yet) professional servers or bartenders. That aside, they try harder to please their patrons than at any other Calgary restaurant -- maybe any restaurant I've ever been to anywhere. You will find more 'professional' service elsewhere but you will not find friendlier servers (and teachers), better food, or better value for your dining dollar. The only hitch for newbies is that it's only open during the school year, it's only open for dinner from Mon-Thu, and you have to book weeks (perhaps months) in advance. But it's worth it.

Thought that the smoked duck appetizer was wonderful. Had very nice flavors that meshed with the cheese perfectly. The cornish chicken breast on top of the bed of cranberry dressing was over the top. Would definitely recommend it to anyone. Felt that the parsnip could have been a little more cooked for my taste; but overall the experience with all the dishes were spot on. The dessert choices were amazing and we savored every bite of chocolate souffle and icecream. Very decadent.
