A word from The Heritage Restaurant
The Heritage is one of the many classroom/laboratory facilities operated by the Secchia Institute for Culinary Education at GRCC. The restaurant is staffed by students in the Culinary Arts programs and is under the direct supervision of chef and table service professors.
During luncheon hours, your meal will be prepared and served by freshman students. The meals represent International Cuisine with
modern and classical touches. In the evening, The Heritage reopens to feature a relaxed atmosphere, more Continental Cuisine, and our sophomore students preparing much of your meal table-side. The food is wonderful.
The Secchia Institute for Culinary Education restaurants and kitchens are our classroom settings. We take pride in them. Our students prepare our meals daily with the finest seasonally available ingredients including home-styled baked breads, and taste-tempting desserts.

  • "Overall, liked it very much and received good suggestions from all of the waitstaff. Drawback: I dropped my fork, and it took someone more than 3 minutes to bring a new one (and she needed a reminder). Salad plates should have been cleared before entrees were brought to the table - it should not be the patron's job to juggle plates. Also, menu changes had been made since the beginning of the semester - but they didn't bother to print new menus! I would expect a small print run of menus on a weekly basis, especially if chef is getting a special on some products. Even so, we will certainly be back."

  • "Until there is some experienced person directing the students at Heritage Restaurant to assure coordination and hot food, the experience will be middling at best. Each student has a delegated task, but there is no coordination or communication between posts. We saw no supervision taking place in the dining room, helping the students improve their technique and timing. "

  • "This is a training ground for culinary students, and as expected the emphasis is on the food. Service is well-meaning, but not the kind of sycophantic pandering you get from a server gunning for a $30 tip. (Student servers are not allowed to take tips) So, great place to try out some unique fare at a reasonable price (I had the foie-gras creme brulee followed by the Wagyu filet-mignon), but not necessarily a place you want to take a date on a special occasion where you would want a little more atmosphere and 5-star service."

  • "I wasn't sure what to expect walking up to the restaurant but I was pleasantly surprised. It's like walking into a fine dining spot, great atmosphere and attention to detal. We waiting a bit for service, finally asking someone walking by for help, but other than that it was awesome. We shared a small plate of Duck, it was fabulous; then the entrees were good as well. The dessert alone would bring me back, divine!"

  • "We have been to The Heritage several times before. The experience was always positive. We consider this experience an exception to their fine reputation. The waiter seemed overwhelmed. He was seating a larger party (10) when we arrived. It took 20 min. to take our order and it ended being taken by another waiter. Our waiter came by to confirm the order we had given. Somehow, he had not noticed that we had received/eaten our appetizer and brought it out again. We had to inquire about receiving bread. Our water glasses ran empty a couple of times before being filled. It took 40 min. for our entrees to arrive. Although we had mentioned our time constraints (to get to a show), we had to go to the desk for our bill. Next time..."

  • "The Heritage at GRCC is a student-operated restaurant which serves up high-end cuisine for the same price as a steak house. The menu is available online so you can decide what you want beforehand. I enjoyed the way that the menu breaks things down for you (small/large plate). I had a few pieces of the complimentary bread with regular butter and also a flavored butter (with bacon) and a small plate and was satisfied. The dessert offerings are brought around on a cart at the end of the main course by one of the students. They will explain what each dessert contains and you will be able to see what it looks like (we eat with our eyes too). I brought my family of 5 and the cost of lunch was around $60."

  • "We love going to the Heritage restaurant. We got a few times a year. Since it's a teaching/learning restaurant the students really make a great effort to serve you well. I love finding out what the students will do after graduating. They are very nice and sometimes nervous, but all do a great job and put in the effort of great service. The food is outstanding. Chef Dunn does a great job with the kitchen students. We enjoy going out with our family and also taking friends and co-workers there."

The enthusiasm and the knowledge of the students is always impressive. The food selection is one of the best in Grand Rapids. The menu changes regularly so that there is always something new and exciting on the menu. I have yet to have the same thing twice! The food is always outstanding. From the presentation to the final bite, it is simply delicious. The prices are VERY reasonable, you can NOT beat the prices for the quality you get. My family raves about this place and I am always telling people about it. It is a great spot and it is a great experience. HIGHLY recommended."

  • "We had a fabulous evening at The Heritage! After ordering a local beer, Founders All Day IPA, we were served Potato/Asparagus shooters with tiny cheese biscuits to prepare our palates. After ordering, a server came with a loaded fresh bread cart and flavored/whipped butters. We had mock eel (yummy shiitake mushrooms!) and a fresh salad plate with grapefruit, avocados, and herbs. Next came a peach mango sorbet. Entrees: Rainbow Trout with red quinoa hash and Macadamia Nut Encrusted Black Sole with Forbidden Rice with roast veggies. Shared delicious layered buckwheat dessert cake. French press coffee was fabulous. Michael, our server, took care of all of our needs. Amazing restaurant. Best in GR! Pampered by students in an amazing program!"

  • "I brought my 88 year old mother and my daughter to the Heritage to celebrate a milestone birthday of mine. The food was amazing, each and everyone of us was entirely please. My mother remarked several times how her soup was still hot even when she got to the bottom of her bowl. She was so pleased with this. I thought the complimentary desserts for my birthday was very generous, each was delicious. We live in walking distance and I said to my husband when I got home that we have to make this our neighborhood restaurant. We will be back :-)"

  • "The food was very good and quite eclectic. The fresh bread was awesome too. The downside to our dining experience was the dis-organization of the wait staff. We were greeted right away and a drink order taken, but then it was a long time before we saw our server and there were long stretches throughout the dinner when we were waiting for him to check back on us."

I love to support these students while they practice their art and home their craft. That being said, they all do a fantastic job. The food is delicious, comparable to any gourmet restaurant at a fraction of the price. Service is efficient and friendly. The atmosphere is positive and you can tell all the employees/students truly care about their work. The Heritage is an easy walk from work for lunch. I feel it's a hidden gem... they deserve more recognition!"

  • "we began our culinary journey at 5:30 thursday evening with a beautiful view of grand rapids and Shrimp ala Sarah! little did we know that 3 1/2 hours later, we would be reluctantly putting on our coats to leave. needless to say our food, the education we earned along the journey that night and the service was top notch. we didn't want to leave! the platings were gorgeous, the wine pairing was spot on! james, our server, was both friendly and personable as well as knowledgeable. the whole dining staff attentive and quietly in the background doing their jobs with great attention to detail. my water glass was ever less than half full! looking forward to many, many meals in the future! great things are happening here at The Heritage!"

Sometimes they are very nervous and not yet perfect, but they are well-trained and try their very best at their early attempts to please and serve. There are always experienced staff around and the food is magnificent. It's a good deal for the diners and a good learning experience for those preparing and serving. There are always table-side-prepared items to order and we highly recommend them."

  • "Very nice, especially for a culinary school. The staff was energetic, friendly and capable without being obtrusive. The wine list is a bit limited, but mostly very good selections at reasonable prices. I had the Mock Eel which the table deemed delicious. One party member had the cauliflower soup, which we all felt was bland. For the main course I had Pan Roasted Quail. I felt it was done to perfection. The stuffing was a great match. I finished with the Opera Cake. It was uninspired, but the chocolate in the presentation was first rate. I was thinking probably Belgium. The rest of my party of 4 felt it was the best meal they had had in a long time."
